VSM files start with the bytes 01 00 00 bc which appear to be nothing more than a magic number. Changing any of these first four bytes causes the file to not be recognized as a VSM file. Next are four bytes that give the length of the resource section in little-endian order so 46 0b 00 00 signifies that the length is 0x00000b46 or 2886 bytes long. The next four bytes are calculated by taking 0xffffffff - (the CRC-32 of the resource section). If the CRC-32 of the resource section is 0x5480b153 then take 0xffffffff - 0x5480b153 = 0xab7f4eac so the four bytes are ac 4e 7f ab. The Vendor ID takes the next two bytes. Remember that little-endian order is used, so 36 01 is used to represent the vendor id 310 for Wind Italy. The Vendor ID MAY be changed without affecting the file signature or the checksum. The next two bytes are always zero. There is a single byte value of unknown purpose followed by two bytes of zero followed by a byte that is zero when the unknown value is zero, and one when the unknown value is non-zero. There are eight bytes of zero before the resource section begins. This may be reserved for future use. The resource section may be empty, but most often it contains resources. Each resource starts with two bytes that specify the resource type, followed by a two byte resource length value, followed by the resource data. If the last byte of the resource falls on an even-numbered address offset (assuming the first byte in the file is considered offset zero) then there is a pad null byte between the two resources. The pad byte is not figured into the length of either resource, but is included in the value for the total resource section length found in the file header. The resouces may be listed in any order, however changing any byte in the resource section including resource order will cause the file signature to be invalid. Following the resource section there may or may not be a footer and signature. The footer is the byte sequence: 1F 2D C8 D7 33 00 00 00 80 00 00 00. I am not sure of the function of the first eight bytes, but I believe the 80 00 specifies that the signature is of length 0x0080 or 128 bytes. There are two null bytes followed by a 128 byte (1024 bit) signature. The following table lists the values to use to define a field type followed by a name for each. There are also some values for flags listed after the field for which they are used. Code: Below is a list of Vendor ID values in both hex and decimal. I have been using a Palm Treo 755p since last 1-2 years. All Treos have the issue of requiring you to reset the radio (switch off & on) before connecting internet otherwise one gets error 3000 as they are configured for sprint EVDO while in India we can only use 1X on reliance or tata. Though its only a minor irritant, but as the treo takes over 30-40 seconds to reset the phone/radio it had been troubling me a lot as i sometimes need to quickly use the net for small things and get restless while doing the reset. Plus if someone calls or i've to call someone in between i have to reset again before connecting to internet. There didn't seem to be any solution for the problem either on the forum or even anywhere else on the web. Somedays back my co. put our netconnect broadband modems on VPN plan i.e. we get connected to office network and all internet requests then go through the office - resulting in No facebook, youtube or exe downloads. So i started using my Treo tethered to my laptop when i wanted to access certain sites (though 1X speed s**ks once you're used to broadband+) While earlier i had used some app for tethering this time I just used windows to create a dialup connection through 'modem over bluetooth' and dialling #777 with login pass as my no. This results in the treo getting connected and a small laptop like icon appearing near the top right. I noticed that this thing never gives an error 3000 or any other issue even right after a call. So i explored the treo menu to create a manual connection which wouldn't have the problem and found the following to work flawlessly: Go to Preferences>Connections. Create a new 'connection' with the 'connect to' field set to 'modem' and 'Via' field set to 'wireless modem' (plus usual things: dialing - touchtone, volume-off, details>speed-230,400 bps, flow ctrl-auto) and give it any name say TEST Then go into Preferences>Networks and create new service with any name and select TEST in the drop down and enter usual login/pass (cell no or UTS@.. etc) and phone: #777 (plus usual settings like: details>advanced: IP Address Automatic and Query DNS) Now whenever I click connect for this service i do not get error 3000 while using the earlier connection/service (which uses HiSpeed Wireless in the drop down) gives this error. and both opera mini and email work fine. Unfortunately, I've found this only now when I am on the verge of changing my handset. Though i still love this handset - lets me edit MS Office documents, email works flawlessly, one of the rare handsets to have a perfect call recorder, and though it only has opera mini it works better than mini on other phones as i can use netbanking and online demat/trading accounts which i couldn't do with mini on nokia 6265. Still.. have just documented the above in case there are still any Treo 755p users left and need this info.
