The 3G or third generation mobile network lets you really make the most of your mobile phone with a great range of advanced services. It enhances the services such as multimedia, high speed mobile broadband, internet access with the ability to view video footage on your mobile handset. With a 3G phone and access to the 3G network you can make video calls, watch live TV, access the high speed internet and download heavy files, as well as the usual voice call and messaging services. Frequently Asked questions What is the advantage of 3G over 2G? The significant difference between 2G and 3G networks is the faster data speeds offered by 3G. Other pros include enhanced audio and video streaming, video calling, video-conferencing support, etc. For voice use and text messaging, the differences between a 2G and 3G phone are minimal. My GSM operator did not get a 3G license. What is going on? With no private operator bagging pan-India 3G spectrum, in a circle where a company does not have 3G spectrum, it may strike a roaming pact to ensure that its customers have seamless access to these services. Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular have confirmed discussions on a tie-up. Others are in talks with State cos BSNL/MTNL. Will I have to change my SIM to migrate to 3G? No, you can access 3G services from your existing SIM. On what factors does 3G speed depend? The 3.6 Mbps to 21 Mbps speeds claimed by operators are based on ideal conditions. Practical speed depends on handset used, application, coverage, network traffic and number of users currently using that point of time. What will happen if I am out of 3G coverage area? You will continue to access 2G/2.5G services in areas where 3G coverage is absent. Please ensure that your network setting is on dual mode. Do I need to do any settings on my mobile handset for 3G? Yes. You will have to select 3G/UMTS Dual mode in your handset for network selection. Can I download and upload videos on my mobile? Yes, with 3G you can watch streaming videos and download videos on your mobile handset. You can also send user generated content i.e record video from your mobile and share them with your friends or upload on internet sites from your mobile. Is it necessary for both the parties to have a 3G phone & service to be to make & receive video calls? Yes, it is necessary for both the parties to have a 3G phone with dual camera which supports video calling & both the phones are connected on 3G network. How would I know if my handset is 3G compatible or not? When you are in a 3G network area and if your handset shows 3G on the top of the screen next to the network signal bars means that your phone is 3G compatible & you can use the services. I have taken GPRS pack will they work on 3G network? The operators have separate data packs for 2G and 3G. With the 3G packs you would get higher speeds which you would not be able to enjoy on 2G packs. Keep hearing about HSPA+? HSPA+ (also called Evolved HSPA) is a further evolution of the HSPA network that offers data speeds of up to 21 Mbps. It is sometimes called 3.5G and defined in 3GPP release 7. Edit : Will be adding more info shortly

With MNP finally being introduced tonight, I am starting this topic for the benefit of everyone on the forum, to get back feedbacks from people who have "already ported". You can post your feedbacks in this format (add some more if you like, but this should be bare minimum) - ---------------------------------- I have PORTED my existing (name of service provider) (GSM/CDMA) number XX123456XX to (name of new service provider) (GSM/CDMA) (e.g. I have PORTED my existing Reliance CDMA number 93584XXXXX to Idea GSM) Reasons for Porting - Grievances with existing Service provider - Benefits that I see of the new service provider - Porting Experience - (mention time taken to port from first sms etc.) Any other important comment - ------------------------------- Kindly participate en-mass and spread the joy of the wonderful new world of MNP.... EDIT- A sincere request - On the basis of feedback received from other senior members, I would request all to be as brief as possible and avoid posting unnecessary stuff and dont make this topic loose its prime motto..... Thanks all for your co-operation and understanding...
