1 - Android basics ROM: it is the firmwire similar to Windows on PC, in Android world we have the ''stock ROM'' which is the ROM that comes built in, we have ''custom ROMS'' which are built by developers bringing lot of customizations, and ''cooked ROMS'' which are custom ROMS on which we add apps and settings as we want. Kernel: it is the interface between hardware and software, used to modify hardware drivers as wifi, battery, CPU overclocking and undervolting. Radio: it changes the baseband of the phone, though not recommended to be changed because they could brick your phone. Rooting: it is a process that allows users to attain privileged control (known as "root access" or superuser su) which allows installing specific apps, custom ROMs, kernels etc. Recovery Mode (recovery.img): it is a special piece of software that gives you access to administrative functions, such as installing the base system (ROM), making backups, and performing a 'factory reset'. Android SDK: it is a free app for windows that is essential to use ADB and fastboot. ADB: it is a DOS command that can be used within android sdk when the phone is in normal USB mode, mainly used to copy/pasting system files. Fastboot: it is an ADB command that takes the phone into fastboot mode, can be used to unlock bootloaders. Refer this for details. 2 - Setting up Android SDK and using ADB Refer to this topic for details, guide videos and commands. Though most of the common activities do not need ADB use, it is good to have this setup. ********************************************************************************************************************************************* Gurus, fellow members - comments are now welcome. Starting here the collection of iPhone (3G/3GS/4) applications, games and navigation. With more and more iPhone CDMA coming on the Forum with Reliance, I feel it better to have a different topic of iOS applications. Also requesting Mods/Admins to club all iPhone related topics to one place like done for Android/WM/Symbian. Use this topic for all type of apps for iOS (iTunes Free or Cr**ked otherwise) Installation Instructions:- For the apps free over iTunes, you just need to sync your iPhone with iTunes. But for cr**ked apps/games, your iPhone need to be Jail Broken (in my opinion) For that, instruction in the attached file are tested and working on iPhone 3G/3GS, may also work for iPhone4 (though not tested by me yet) Installing Unsigned Apps.pdf Starting with my favorite app on any platform-Offline India Maps (already posted in Android Navigation topic by me) For iPhone 4 - 3D Maps, Latest Version v11 Sygic India Maps- Official iTunes Link Download from here. I still haven't got enough time to check these on my iPhone4, as I don't have it with me right now. The inherent KEEDA of taking PANGA with new phones had hospitalized my newly bought iPhone 4 and will be back in a day or two. You can also give these a try on iPhone 3G/3GS and check if working or not. For iPhone 3G/3GS - v8.2.5 This version has now been removed from iTunes. This is the same thing as we all are using on our Androids/WM/Symbian with a 1027 cities database. Download from here. I will be posting some more apps as soon as I get back my iPhone4 and test these apps on that. There will be AN APP A DAY. Members may request there requirements over here. Enjoy

Samsung is rumoured to be looking into a bid for Nokia's handset arm, according to online sources. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that 'market speculation' is linking the Korean firm with the ailing phone manufacturer, just a week after Microsoft was rumoured to be doing the same thing. However, both Nokia and Samsung have kept quiet on the subject, according to the WSJ, with Samsung stating: "It seems like a market rumor and we don't comment on rumors The Finnish handset maker is currently mired in dire financial straits. After a brutal second half of 2010 that saw them surrender 25 percent of their market share, Nokia’s outlook continues to look bleak. They now deem it “no longer appropriate” to provide annual targets for 2011. In other words, the future looks so bad, they would just rather not talk about it. Back in February, when Nokia shocked the mobile world with their announcement to adopt Windows Phone as their “primary smartphone platform,” they promised not to immediately abandon Symbian, the OS that has powered their phones for years. “Symbian becomes a franchise platform, leveraging previous investments to harvest additional value. This strategy recognizes the opportunity to retain and transition the installed base of 200 million Symbian owners. Nokia expects to sell approximately 150 million more Symbian devices in the years to come.” However, it is difficult to imagine mobile phone vendors pushing devices that they (and the public) know will eventually be phased out. And without any Nokia Windows Phones for sale at the moment, Nokia may find themselves in a precarious position before the fruits of their new deal are ever released. Nokia chief Stephen Elop vehemently denied earlier rumors that Microsoft was in talks to buy Nokia. Both Samsung and Nokia chose to not “comment on rumors” but did not deny the possibility of such a deal

3b - Video tutorials Making a nandroid backup, installing a custom ROM and restoring the nandroid backup This is an utility, accessible through Recovery Mode, that allows you to backup the device and restore to the exact condition at backup. Generally you would do a nandroid before changing or upgrading ROMs. Making a backup 1. Boot into Recovery Mode 2. Select Backup/Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img) 3. Select Nand Backup (may vary depending on recovery.img) 4. Follow on screen directions to complete 5. Wait for it to complete. Congratulations, you now have a Nandroid backup! Restoring a backup 1. Boot into Recovery Mode 2. Select Backup/Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img) 3. Select Nand Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img) 4. Select your 'Device-ID' from the list (You will most likely only have one device listed) 5. Select the backup you want to restore (Latest should be last on list) 6. Follow on screen directions to complete 7. Wait for it to complete. Upgrading ROMs I am being limited to two media files per post so apologies for large number of posts. Mods if you could merge the posts keeping the videos, that would be great.

3e - Video tutorials Installing custom kernels and overclocking Custom kernels cannot be flashed on stock ROM. Custom kernels offer overclocking i.e. higher frequency than the stock frequency. Because they are running at higher frequency the overclocked kernels are undervolted. So while this will increase speed, undervolting reduces life of electronics. For Epic do not push overclock beyond 1.3 GHz and most phones are good at 1.2 GHz. If you want to manually change frequency, do so at small intervals and monitor the performance. Use setcpu to control overclock. Generally it is best to keep simple setcpu profile e.g. conservative governor min 200 max 1200 and one screen off profile at 200. Too many profiles confuse things. Note that for Syndicate Frozen ROMs you must keep conservative governor and screen off at 200 minimum. Installing modem
