Some important FAQ's from the point of view of consumers for Mobile Number Portability Everyone waiting with excitement for MNP launch in their respective circles. I thought some FAQ on important issues at one place will help all. So drafted this. I know there is a separate MNP thread but some critical information gets lost in so many posts and also some questions are not answered there. Hope you all find this useful. Will update this if something more comes to attention. Thank You and enjoy MNP. When is MNP being launched in my circle. Mobile Number Portability has been launched across India on 20th January 2011. For Official Confirmation of this, See Here http://www.rimweb.in...post__p__216104 In What circumstances my request for MNP may be rejected? -A period of 90 days has not expired from the date of porting if you have ported your number earlier. -A period of 90 days has not expired from the date of activation of your current number even if it was not ported earlier. -There are some outstanding dues by way of pending bill or bills. -There is a pending request for change of ownership of number. -The mobile number to be ported is sub-judice. -Any court has passed an order prohibiting the porting of the concerned number. What exactly is meant by outstanding dues. Outstanding dues will mean the amount by way of actually generated bills as on the date of your request for MNP. Suppose if your Billing Date is 7th of each month and you make a request for MNP on 15th of that month, outstanding dues will mean the amount of your bill generated on 7th of that month. The subsequent amount of your usage and rent till the time of actual number porting will have to be paid by you to your existing operator later on as and when the final bill is generated. However this amount is not considered as outstanding. You are only supposed to pay it. If you don't, then even after MNP, your number can be de activated by the new operator based on complaint by your existing operator. I am a very old mobile subscriber and in the earlier days there was a lot of deposits to be paid for STD, ISD. I have such deposits with my existing operator. Can i adjust it against my outstanding so as not to wait for a refund. You cannot. However as per the TRAI Quality of Service norms, your existing operator is supposed to refund you all the deposit within a period of 60 days from the date of closure. I am a CDMA subscriber and want to switch to a GSM Service. My friend is having GSM Service and wants to switch to CDMA Service? Is it possible? Yes. You will be able to switch from CDMA>GSM as well as GSM>CDMA.But you will need a GSM Handset if switching from CDMA and CDMA handset if switching from GSM. I am swiching from CDMA to CDMA and have an official handset from my current operator. Will the same handset work with the new operator. If you are having an OMH (Open Market Handset) Sim CDMA handset, it will work with the new CDMA service provider. For other handsets it is a grey area. TRAI in its Mobile Number Portability Regulations has mentioned the following as one of the reasons for rejection of MNP request. "there are subsisting contractual obligations in respect of which an exit clause has been provided in the subscriber agreement but the subscriber has not complied with such exit clause:" There are lots of CDMA handsets sold at cheap rates by operators. You pay as less as Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 for them. However we all don't care to read the fineprint of terms and conditions. If the terms and conditions says that the handset is the property of the operator, then you will be stuck there as the operators will interpret the above TRAI clause as per their convenience and say that the customer needs to return the handset back to them. I am a postpaid subscriber but would like to be prepaid one with the new operator. Yes you can do that. You can also be a postpaid subscriber from prepaid. I am a prepaid subscriber and have a good amount of balance in my account. Will it be carried forward to new operator. No. You will lose your prepaid credit balance with the existing operator. I have a lot of add on packs like SMS, Onnet free talktime etc. Will it be carried forward to the new operator of my choice. Unfortunately No. You will have to select a fresh plan of your choice from the new operator. For how long my services be disrupted. Your services will be disrupted for not more than 2 hours on the day of actual porting. Even this will be mostly done between late evening to early morning hours to cause least inconvenience. Your phone will remain operational on all days while your MNP request is under process. I am interested in switching to a new operator of my liking. What do i need to do? -Send an SMS: PORT<space>Mobile Number (that is to be ported) to 1900. For ex. PORT 1234567890 -Your existing operator will immediately provide you with a 8 digit alpha-numeric porting code that you need to submit to the operator you wish to opt to along with relevant documents. -The unique porting code will be valid for 15 days for all service areas except Jammu & Kashmir, Asaam & North East Licensed areas where the validity of the Unique Porting Code allocated to a subscriber will be 30 days from the date of request OR till such time the number is ported out, whichever is earlier, irrespective of the number of requests the subscriber makes. - You need to submit the documents to operator of your choice within this time frame. -Your number will be ported to the new operator within a maximum time frame of 7 Working days. For Jammu & Kashmir it will be maximum 15 Working days. What Documents are required for porting the number to a new operator? -Duly Filled Customer Application Form of your new operator alongwith the UPC (Unique Porting Code) details. -Your Adress Proof and Identity Proof. -Copy of last bill paid to your current operator. I made a porting request to the new operator but now changed my mind and do not want to shift. What to do? You can cancel your porting request to the new operator within 24 hours of submitting the application but the porting fees of Rs 19 (If you had paid) will be non refundable. I will port from say Reliance to Tata Docomo. I understand that my number remains the same but if i surrender my number in Tata Docomo, what happens to the number? Once you surrender your ported number, it will again revert back to the Original Operator for issue to a new customer. I stay in Gujarat but now will be shifting to Mumbai Soon. So i guess it makes sense to port my number to a Mumbai Circle Telecom Operator. Currently you can only port your number to an operator within your telecom circle. Inter Circle portability is not allowed yet but is on the radar of the govt. and will happen ultimately. Can i use the same SIM Card of my current operator after i port to a new operator. No. Your Operator will issue a new Sim Card to you. You can continue to use your current operator's Sim card even after you give the portability request but only till the time of actual porting. Once porting is done, insert the new sim card. I am sick of those unwanted marketing calls and already registered with the Do Not Call Registry. I guess even after porting i will have peace of mind as my number remains the same. Picture is not completely clear yet but some operators are saying that you will need to re-register for Do Not Call Registry. If your new operator has an option in the CAF form for activation of DND, select it otherwise activate it after porting. Is there any charges for this? TRAI has mandated maximum of Rs. 19/- for MNP request to be paid to your new operator. However your new operator has the option to waive it off. I fulfill all the criteria for porting my number still my porting request was rejected by my current operator/i am facing technical glitches wherein my current operator has de-activated my number but new operator is not activating hence i cannot make or receive any calls/What to do if i have any complaints regarding my MNP porting process? You should first try lodging complaints with your current/new operator for resolution of your MNP porting related complaints. If still there is no resolution, you can always complain to Deptt. of Telecom OR TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India). Officially neither DOT or TRAI has announced any procedure/contact details for people wanting to complain regarding MNP Process/issues. However, you can lodge your complain on the following public e-mail of DOT & TRAI. Deptt. Of Telecom ddgpg-dot@nic.in TRAI ca@trai.gov.in What Precautions i should take so that my porting request is not rejected? During Generating The Port Out Code: Ensure that the SMS you are sending for generating the Porting Code is without any signature. Many people put default signatures in their SMS. Some of the Operators are intentionally blocking the Generation of Port Code and you may receive messages like, "Can not process Your Request, Please Try After Some Time". In such cases, lodge a complaint with the Customer Service of Your Operator and wait for resolution. While lodging the complaint, be firm and tell your Operator that unless your complaint is processed in a reasonable time frame, You will take the matter further by lodging Complaints to DOT and TRAI. Before Proceeding to New Operator With Port In Request Ensure that there is no pending request for Change of Ownership of your number with the current operator. Ensure that you have already paid of your last generated bill to your current operator if you are a post paid customer. Check that 90 days have passed from the date when your services was activated with the current operator. If you have converted your Postpaid to Prepaid with your current operator, ensure that 90 days have passed from the date of activation of Prepaid. (Though this is not uniform and debatable) Do not give Port In request to more than One Operator with the same UPC Code. If you have received any free handset with time commitment or are under some scheme with your current operator which mandates you to fulfill certain obligations, Clarify with your current operator what you need to do so that your contractual obligations are fulfilled and port out will not be rejected. While Going to New Operator For Port In Ensure that your Unique Porting Code and Mobile Number is Correctly Filled in the Necessary Forms. During The Porting Process If you are a Postpaid Customer and a fresh bill is generated while the porting process is going on, Pay it off immediately preferably in Cash at the Operators Outlets, So it reflects immediately in your account.

I recently bought a Imobile phone, a Chinese handset with proper IMEI no. for someone known to me. The charm was to get TV playing on a phone worth Rs.2,900/- It was shocking to me that the description read the phone comes with One year On-Site Warranty. I did not believe they have service agents in every city. The moment I noticed an issue with the phone I mailed the seller who tried to give me solution through email for two days. On the third day when I said that I am still not satisfied with the resolution. The guy offered for a replacement as per the warranty and same afternoon the phone was picked up by Blue dart on seller's expense. I was more than impressed at the professional service quality offered by a seller who is giving only Chinese phones that too of such low value. What I intend to bring notice to here is the fact that the phones bought on this forum could also offer such on site pick up one year warranty if the issue is not solved online by the seller. After all most of the handsets dealt here are of value more than 5-10 times of the phone I mentioned above. I would like to strongly suggest this to the seller's on this forum. It would add to the credibility for new buyers who are skeptic knowing there isnt manufacturer's warranty on these products. I request other fellow members of this forum to come forward and show support for this. Link to the phone as requested : http://cgi.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200640280081

Received info about this product in mail. Looked exciting with great specs for the price, so called up shopyourworld and clarified a few things. This is what i was told on the phone, It has a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor. There is a SIM slot in which any GSM SIM can be used for 3G Data. ( I asked twice and was told they are sure about that, still confirm again) 1 Year manufacturer warranty they are talking about is shopyourworld warranty. Now to the product, it's Archos Arnova 7 G2 Tablet, just launched few days back, priced $ 215 in hong kong and available with shopyourworld in india for delivery at your doorstep including option of Cash on Delivery Basis. Archos Arnova 7 G2 Tablet at Rs 10,900 >> http://www.shopyourw...ecs-arnova.html Specs: 7” capacitive touchscreen, 800x480 resolution, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 8GB Memory + Micro SD Slot (SDHC compatible), Wi-Fi, HDMI Output, Webcam, GPS. Archos is a good international brand, not like chinese tablets. The only con i see is that Archos Appslib instead of Google Market for android apps. But i have read that fellas at xda already had some solution to install Android Market in earlier such tablets from archos.

True but it will not happen by magic. One has to start somewhere. Corruption is there in all walks of life and will continue to remain. That does not mean we do not support the steps being taken to weed out corruption. I do not care if marches and slogans and fasts work or not. I support them because they are trying to do something. Something is better than nothing. We all like to sit on the fence and criticize, if we cannot add anything then let us not detract from the people who are taking part in these activities, it does not matter they are successful or not, what matters is the spirit of trying to make things better. Quoting my employer's group motto. Today is another perfect day, to defy the world’s naysayers. Today, we will think bigger than our size. Today, we will refuse to accept limitations. Today, we will not be held back by the past. Today, we will focus on the future — and never, ever blink. Today, we will break down another barrier. Scoff at another convention. And use alternative thinking. To solve another previously unsolvable problem. Today, we will accomplish something astounding. And in the process, change someone’s life for the better. Today, we will set an example for the world. With boldness. With confidence. With relentless optimism. Good Morning. Today is another perfect day... to Rise.

I don't think there will be any 3G radio built in for either GSM or CDMA. You did not notice the question marks they have put everywhere? This looks like another of those standard chinese tablet and 3G if any will be through putting your 3G dongle (GSM or CDMA) in it's USB port. And they are mentioning in CPU, NEC EV2-Cortex A9-1GHz-Dual-Core,3D Hardware Acceleration. Ohh.. Give us a break!! Heard those fake specs before !! I have a simple test to identify a chinese tablet.. It's quite silly actually but have been failsafe till now.. The moment you see the following words, you know it..

32 iPhone Terms Everyone MUST Know if you’re looking to hack your phone, you’ll need to learn a few terms.... 3G: The fast wireless network used by the new iPhone 3G. Speeds range from 700k per second to 1.5Mbit/sec, but availability is usually restricted to urban centers. A-GPS: Assisted GPS. When the data from a GPS satellite isn’t enough, as when someone is indoors or surrounded by large buildings, A-GPS cross-references local cell towers for coordinates in order to pinpoint a user’s location. Accelerometer: An instrument built into the iPhone which detects movement and compensates appropriately. For example, when you turn your iPhone onto its side and Safari moves accordingly, that’s the accelerometer in action. Ditto when your fire up PhoneSaber and start making lightsaber sounds by swinging your phone around. App Store: The official Apple repository of third-party software for the iPhone 3G. The App Store was launched along with the iPhone 3G and has extended the device from a phone and media player into a powerful mobile computing platform. Though many programs cost between $0.99 and $9.99, plenty of excellent free apps are also available on the App Store. ARM Processor: The brains of the iPhone. Also known as the Advanced RISC Machine processor, ARM was used in the Newton, as well as in the Game Boy Advance, mobile phones from Sony Ericsson, Nokia phones such as the N95, and most recently, the iPhone. Aspen Simulator: Utility included within the iPhone SDK that allows developers to emulate an iPhone from within their computer, so they can test their Web apps, native apps, and how their mobile layout will look and function without having to push the app to an iPhone. Baseband: The area of the iPhone’s firmware memory used by the radio chip. The baseband has usually been the toughest component to hack and modify. Bluetooth 2.0+EDR: Bluetooth is a wireless protocol which allows devices to talk to one another over short ranges. EDR refers to Enhanced Data Rate, meaning data will move faster between similarly enabled devices. Primarily used for peripherals, on the iPhone Bluetooth enables the use of wireless headsets. But the iPhone’s Bluetooth capabilities are crippled, since you can’t sync over Bluetooth, use the network to tether your phone to the computer, and Apple doesn’t yet support A2DP, a protocol that lets you use wireless Bluetooth stereo headphones. DFU: Device Firmware Upgrade. If you’re going to load custom firmware onto the iPhone, you’ll have to put the phone into DFU mode in order to “restore” your phone to your desired settings without iTunes taking control. DFU mode boots the iPhone up without the iPhone OS loading. To put the iPhone into DFU mode: 1. Open iTunes and connect the iPhone, 2. Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time for 10 seconds until the iPhone shuts down. If the Apple logo appears, you need to start over. 3. Release the Sleep/Wake button but continue holding the Home Button for approximately seven more seconds. iTunes will inform you that the iPhone is in Restore mode. The iPhone screen should be blank. From there, you can install your own firmware by clicking the Restore button while holding down the Option key, then browsing for your firmware file. This mode is helpful if you've jailbroken your iPhone and you need to virginize it for the latest Apple-approved firmware. Note: Once you are in DFU mode, you can't exit from this mode without a restore of the firmware. EDGE: The data network used by AT&T. EDGE is widespread, but at speeds 150kbit to 200kbit per second in ideal settings, it isn’t very fast. Geotagging: The practice of adding metadata to a geographic location. For instance, when you bookmark a page in the Google Maps app on your iPhone, you’re geotagging. Apps, including the Camera app, will also geotag photos taken on the iPhone, so they can be identified by location once uploaded to services like Flickr or SmugMug. GPRS: General Packet Service Radio. Not quite 3G or EDGE, GPRS offers decent but not zippy data transfer on a GSM data network. GPRS is the foundation which EDGE is built upon. It provides data rates from 56kbit up to 114kbit per second. GPS: Global Positioning System. Originally a creation of the military, GPS consists of a series of satellites in orbit able to pinpoint one’s position on the ground with high accuracy. GPS soon migrated to consumer devices such as in-car navigation. The price of GPS has plummeted recently, making it possible for your iPhone to tell you where you are and how to get to where you’re going. Jailbreak: Jailbreaking an iPhone means altering its OS via hacking to allow the running of third-party applications that haven’t been approved by Apple. Examples of such apps would include a VOIP program that runs over the 3G network, game emulators, or programs that allow you to examine and change the internal workings of the phone, like OpenSSH. Jailbreaking is accomplished using various tools including ZiPhone and Pwnage Tool. Infineon BGA736 (Tri-Band HSDPA LNA): The radio that allows the iPhone to access high-speed 3G networks....and drain your battery in half the time of the old iPhone. Installer: A program on jailbroken iPhones that installs third-party programs. Installer also catalogues the latest third-party phones for jailbroken phones. iPhone Dev Team: The creators of Pwnage Tool, a program that unlocks and jailbreaks first-gen iPhones, and jailbreaks, but does not unlock, the iPhone 3G. iPhone Dev Team Elite: The original iPhone Dev Team split up and formed into two groups, but has since reunited with the jokingly termed “iPhone Dev Team Elite.” into one cohesive hacking partnership. This group is best known for the AnySIM unlocking program. Multi-Touch: Interface system that allows users to interact with a device through touch, while recognizing more than one touch point at a time. When you ”pinch” or expand a webpage or picture on your iPhone, you’re using multi-touch. Push: A feature announced for the iPhone that will allow mail and other data to be “pushed” onto the phone from external servers, similar to how mail works on a BlackBerry. MobileMe is another component of this push initiative, as is the ability to use the function with third-party apps. Apple doesn’t allow apps to work in the background, so “pushing” IM messages, for example, to the phone works around that issue. Quad Band GSM: The ability to access multiple frequency bands on your phone, which enables roaming capability in more countries with varying GSM networks. The iPhone is a quad-band device, meaning it can be used practically anywhere in the world where a GSM network is available. Restore/Recovery mode: If you iPhone won't communicate with iTunes and has gone completely insane, Restore mode could be your savior. Restore mode loads the bare minimum iPhone OS, perfect for a reinstall of the firmware. To place your iPhone in Restore mode: 1. Turn off the iPhone. 2. Hold the Home button as you connect the iPhone to your computer. 3. Continue holding the Home button until you see the iTunes/Dock Cable logo instructing you to connect your iPhone to iTunes. SDK: Software Development Kit. The set of tools supplied by Apple that allow developers to access the inner workings of the iPhone and create third-party applications. SIM Card: The identification card for the iPhone. Without a SIM, the iPhone cannot access the cellular network. Locked iPhones are programmed to only recognize SIM cards from a designated carrier, but an unlocked iPhone will allow any SIM card that works on a GSM network to be used as that phone’s “hall pass” to access the network. SpringBoard: The SpringBoard is the application within the iPhone that manages changes on the iPhone’s home screen. For instance, when you press down on icons to make them “jiggly” and move them around, that’s the SpringBoard in action. The SpringBoard also allows users to make Web Clips for their favorite sites and Web applications, which appear on the iPhone home screen as a button. Summerboard: Summerboard is a third-party application for jailbroken iPhones which allows users to load modified themes onto the device. Given Apple’s strict adherence to their own user interface guidelines, it’s unlikely this feature will ever appear on unmodified iPhones. Unlock: Unlocking your phone refers to changing its internal software so it can be used with with any GSM carrier. Once a phone is unlocked, it can be used anywhere in the world by popping a local SIM into the phone. Unlocking your phone will void the warranty, so proceed at your own risk. Visual Voicemail: An interface for your voicemail that allows you to pick and choose which mail to listen to, similar to how you answer your email, instead of having to listen to your voicemail in sequence, as most voicemail systems require. Web App: A program that runs remotely on a website. Before announcing third-party apps on the iPhone, Steve Jobs stated that Web apps would be the way iPhone users could extend the functionality of the device. Though there are many excellent Web apps available (like the Amazon interface for the iPhone), using a Web app depends on being connected to the internet and so has limited functionality. Web Clip: An icon on the iPhone home screen that takes the user to a designated webpage. When bookmarking a site in Mobile Safari, users have the option of creating a Web Clip. Zibri: Creator of ZiPhone, a potent unlocking tool for first-gen iPhones. Zibri is hard at work on a 3G unlock, though a peek at his blog indicates continued drama between himself and the iPhone Dev Team. ZiPhone: Another unlocking solution for the iPhone. The developer, Zibri, is currently working on unlocking the iPhone 3G.

If you have been pretty satisfied with Vodafone service otherwise in those 11 years, i think you should try adopting a different strategy for that weaker signal... Contact Vodafone, lodge a complaint, request a booster in your premise. You may have to contact higher ups like Nodal, Directly to Senior Level for this thing to materialise in case Customer Care ignores. Many people in the past have been successful in getting Vodafone boosters in their office if majority of the office area was with less/broken coverage. You being a Doctor & customer of 11 years have a strong case. Give it a Try. Secondly for Tariffs, If your signal problem do get sorted out, then put in a port out request, negotiate strongly with Retention, Keep all the proof of your interaction (Voda of late has been notorious for promising something & not giving lateron) and get a better plan. Again people have got very good retention plans from Vodafone. See This Topic MNP Retention Offer You Received. What i am trying to say is that with this Telco behemoths of today, play strategically first (above steps) and if that fails, then only emotionally (showing them the boot). May yield better results.
