Preface Samsung recently made the announcement that they sold 10 million Notes worldwide. While the device's 5.3-inch screen seemed a questionable choice at first, the Note has proved to be a genuine success for Samsung so much so that it is planning to launch a successor with bumped up specs later this month. Competitor LG attracted by success of Note launched LG Optimus Vu which was also well received. The Note deserves kudos as being the device to popularize this new size. Galaxy Note has been given the status of a hybrid device between a tablet and a smartphone. It has the specs under the hood that can match any top of the line smartphone, but its gigantic proportions is what makes the Note deeply intriguing in the first place. I'm opening this topic to review the Note (N-7000) which I bought last month, upgrading from Motorola Photon 4G. The Basics 1.4GHz dual core Exynos CPU, Mali-400MP GPU, 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera in the rear (with flash) and a 2 megapixel camera up-front. And the usual suspects are present - Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, accelerometer, digital compass, proximity, barometer and light sensor. 16GB internal memory which can be extended up to 32GB via microSD card. S-Pen makes debut with the Note. Hardware This review will mainly focus on the defining feature of Note i.e. form factor and the monstrous display. Aesthetically, Note is a prodigious version of the Galaxy SII. If the SGSII looks agreeable to you, then you will positively like the appearance of the Note. The Galaxy Note might have borrowed some features from the Samsung Galaxy S II, but the screen definitely isn't one of them - the latter's Super AMOLED Plus display has been switched for a new HD Super AMOLED screen. The biggest change is in the resolution, which has sky rocketed from 800 x 480 pixels on the earlier one to 1280 x 800 pixels here. Yes, that's the same resolution as 10.1'' tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab and comes just short of the resolution of my 15.6" HP pavilion 2103TU laptop (1366 x 768). This translates to 285 ppi pixel density. The only downgrade here is that the 'Plus' moniker has now been dropped from the end of Super Amoled which means they have shifted from the regular RGB to PenTile technology (i.e. with two sub-pixels in each pixel rather than three subpixels, which lowers the effective resolution). But with Note you will be hard pressed to spot evidence of the Pentile matrix causing jagged edges and pixalation. The screen is gorgeous and watching HD movies, browsing webpages and playing HD games is simply a joy. size comparison - Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Galaxy Note and Galaxy S3. Is this the best display? No, IMO the HTC One X deserves the top spot as the SC-LCD2's color balance, clarity and viewing angles is better and the Note's display looks washed out and the brightness is relatively low at times. Again this is all subject to individual's perception. In spite of its gigantic 5.3-inch display the Note is remarkably slim measuring just 9.65mm and weighs 178 grams which is thankfully evenly spread. Samsung has also kept the bezel to a bare minimum. This trim, lightweight form helps make the Note manageable in a single hand although a second set of digits will be indispensable when you are typing as our thumb won't be able to encompass every corner of its humongous display. Software Out of the box, we have TouchWiz interface running on top of Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread. An update to ICS is now availble which also brings in extra multimedia features and a range of new S Pen optimized apps. S Memo and S planner are two apps that should be mentioned. S-Memo is the special notes app, which will allow you to leverage the possibilities of the included S Pen. S Planner is a facelifted calendar app. Performance The Galaxy S2 has a 1.4GHz dual-core Exynos processor. In use the phone feels incredibly quick – whether you are browsing heavy web pages or swapping between applications it never feels slow. It can play full HD videos without breaking a sweat, though I found the Home screen lagging sometimes after closing an application and returning home and while applying graphic intensive live wallpapers. Benchmarking, though not fully reliable, is a good way of measuring the overall performance of a smartphone's internal hardware components. I personally prefer Antutu as it is a comprehensive Android benchmarking app that produces consistent results. Antutu measures an Android device's CPU performance, 2D and 3D graphics performance, memory speed and internal and external storage read/write speeds. It combines the results for each test and gives the device a final score. The Note scored an impressive 6185. In the more popular Quadrant Standard test, Note hit 3087. Under moderate use (which included 70 mins of voice calls, 2 hrs of watching HD movies, an hour of browsing/readers hub, numerous mails/texts. The auto-sync and auto brightness setting was turned on) the 2,500 mAh battery struggled to last a day and half. The Bad Pocketability is an issue due to its XXL size. Using the Note as your day-to-day, on-the-go phone doesn't seem to be the most practical or comfortable option. The phone suffers from occassional lag which is simply unacceptable considering its premium positioning. The battery life is just mediocre and particularly so when you are on 3G network. The S-Pen (stylus) is not very responsive. No dedicated camera key. Not exactly a defect but hot swappable microSD card would have been a welcome addition. After updating to ICS many of the users are facing low free RAM and battery drain issues. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thanks to my friends Saiesh and Gokulan for letting me play with their Tab, S3.

Two young guys appear in court after being arrested for smoking dope. The judge says, "You seem like nice young men, and I'd like to give you a second chance instead of jail time. I want you to go out this weekend and try to convince others of the evils of drug use. I'll see you back in court Monday." On Monday, the judge asks the first guy, "How did you do over the weekend?" "Well, your honor, I persuaded 17 people to give up drugs forever." "Seventeen people? That's wonderful. How did you do it?" "I used a diagram, your honor. I drew two circles like this: O o. Then I told them that the big circle is your brain before drugs and the small circle is your brain after drugs." "That's admirable," says the judge. Then he turns to the second guy. "And how did you do?" "Well, your honor, I persuaded 156 people to give up drugs forever." "Wow!" says the judge. "156 people! How did you manage to do that?" "Well, I used a similar diagram," the guy says. "I drew two circles like this: o O. Then I pointed to the little circle and said, 'This is your a***hole before prison..................

Lot has been written about battery life of Droid RAZR MAXX over the internet and every one agree to the fact that it gives best possible battery life in compact most possible package. Last month I was on a day trip to Mumbai, I disconnected photon from charger at 530 AM and was to return by 530 evening, however flight got delayed and when landed at 700 PM in Ahmedabad, battery was showing 10%, phone remained in airplane mode for about 2 hours out of total usage of about 13.5 hours. What I did during the day time was made calls of about 15-20 minutes, used tapatalk for aobut an hour and replied few emails. Total screen ON time was 1 hour 10 minutes + EVDO data thats all. This really put me off and decided to either quit android if I do not get good battery life. HetalDP suggested me to look into RAZR MAXX. Hence this phone. I got my Droid RAZR MAXX few days back but could not post review because I had no LTE SIM require to enable data on it - after upgrading to ICS Pros 1. Excellent battery life 2. Very slim for 3300 mAh batter. 3. AMOLED display (I like AMOLED display, though LCD are more natural in color and looks more real. For those who love to watch movies on screen AMOLED is too artificial) Cons 1. Because I am coming from photon, I find it too slim to hold. :-) 2. Non user removable battery 3. Upgrade to ICS require LTE SIM From verizon else DATA do not work. 4. 5-6 hours charging time. 5. Not available for cheap. Real batter life screen shots USAGE PATTERN - 1 Week day usage, screen time about 2 hours 55 minutes hours, heavy data, moderate calling (40-50 minutes) - Battery after about 15 hours 50%, I recharged battery further. May last for max 24 hours USAGE PATTERN - 2 Removed charger on 19th morning at 6 AM, data continuous ON, WIFi OFF, BT ON Battery after 1 DAY 15 HOURS 10% USAGE OF BATTERY WHEN 10% left OVERALL experiance, pleasant because so far none of smart phone has given such good battery life.

YAY... What a nice surprise today morning... I even pinched myself to check I am NOT sleeping still... So here is the good news... Moto has released the BootLoader Unlocking tool for some of its devices (First devices being Photon Q, Razr Developer Edition(WTF), Zoom WiFi, Zoom VERIZON(YES, NO TYPO here) ) and I hope many more will follow in near future... This is the first time Moto kept its word (wrt Photon Q BL UnLocking)... Thanks to GOOGLE... Now I am eagerly waiting for International Razr/MAXX BL UnLocking(I doubt Verizon version will get one)... When the news of Google interested in buying MotorolaMobility came I expected three things from Google viz 1) Reducing the Blurness in UI 2) BL UnLocking 3) More C+G G+G Android phones for China and India.. Thanks Google for making my two dreams come TRUE... Link here and here ===================================================== Motorola Launches “Unlock My Device” Site – Bootloader Freedom Has Come At Last (Update) by: Tim-o-tato | posted 08.17.12 | Breaking, News Double check your calendars – is it April 1st? It’s not? Then there’s been a massive rip in the space time continuum as Motorola has officially published the new “Unlock My Device” page. On the site, Motorola device owners can finally unlock their device’s bootloaders and install 3rd party software. Naturally, there are about one million warnings and hoops to jump through, but it has finally come. To unlock your device, you will need the Android SDK and Motorola’s Drivers. Once you have those things set up on your computer, it’s merely a “follow the instrcutions” type of deal. Interestingly enough, when trying to find out which devices are supported by the Unlock Tool, it took us to an “Access Denied” page here. Fantastic news going into the weekend. We’ll keep checking to see if we can get any more information regarding which devices can now be unlocked using the tool. Update: Motorola has updated their list of supported devices. There is two phones and two tablets that are currently able to have their bootloaders unlocked. Photon Q RAZR developer edition XOOM – Verizon XOOM WiFi We will continue to wait for Motorola to expand on this list. Via: Motorola

Ek Tha Tiger (2012) - 1 star rating - I fail to understand how a film like this can rake in 150 crore business? Are we Indians so foolish? Even though Salman played the "KKI" card to the tee i.e. Khan, Kaif & Id, it is really surprising to note commercial success of such ventures. Really a pathetic state of affairs portraying a very frail picture of our mental aptitude. Even Agent Vinod was twice as good than this sad portrayal of a spy. Salman's previous hits like Dabangg and Wanted still had a proper 'masala' for us to enjoy. This film is a pure waste of time (and my 600 bucks). The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - 3.5 Star - Totally fictitious and still totally involving. Though not one of Nolan's best work, as many have commented, but still not to be missed.

I was able to get the plan changed on postpaid without having to wait for the next billing cycle. They cancelled the previous request and registered a new request for changing my existing plan to the new plan. I received the service request confirmation SMS after a couple of hours saying that it will be applicable from the next day itself:

Now it's revealed that both A100 & A90 has single core processors instead of the earlier news of Dual Core. Though i have a doubt that in case of A90, the second core might be disabled at kernel/rom level for better battery performance because MTK6575 is a Dual Core SOC AFAIK. A85 - Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core A100 - Qualcomm MSM7627A Single Core Adreno 200 GPU, Quadrant Score 2189 A90 - MTK6575 Single Core, PowerVR SGX 531 GPU, Quadrant Score 2543 2D 595 3D 1917 A85 theoretically should be more powerful from the other two but it's stuck officially on Android 2.2. Plus there have been many other complaints of hardware/software glitches. It was essentially a failed model. A90 has a better processor, faster PowerVR GPU and AMOLED screen as well as the ideal size of 4.3". This is a better buy for performance unless one desperately needs the 5" larger screen of A100. Yes the caveats about service support of indian brands by earlier posters is a valid concern but aren't we all taking that risk for imported handsets too because there is no warranty altogether? I know in this case the risk is minimal because the quality of most imported handsets from top brands is generally so good that minimal problems occur. For imported handsets we take the risk because we want latest and the best. For indian brands, you take the risk because you want the most possible crammed within the lowest price possible. Howsoever bad/worse their service support is, it's still there for one year.

When HTC and Samsung came out with burst camera in their quad core devices we were all excited by one of the camera feature "Burst shot mode" But now thanks to Spritefish we can now have the same experience on our Android devices and you don't need to have the One X or Galaxy S3 Fast Burst Camera has made its way onto the Play Store and it does exactly what we were looking for. Simply hold down the button and you can snap up to 30 photos in a single second if your device allows it. On low-end devices, 5-10 photos per second is possible. Hold shoot button for continuous burst, or tap for fast single shots Installed on EVO 3D and worked .
