RIL teams up with Samsung, plans 4G phones for Rs 5.5k Times News Network - Mar 6, 2013, 03.38 AM IST Mumbai: Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries (RIL) is said to have finalized Samsung as a partner to source the Korean conglomerate's long-term evolution (LTE) technology platform for its much-talked about bundled data & voice services over high speed 4G networks across the country. The game-changer deal that is set to shake up the Indian telecommunications market is not just restricted to Samsung's technology but goes far beyond as Samsung has agreed to offer entry-level 4G smartphones at a little over $100 (about Rs 5,500) for use with RIL's voice and high-speed internet services, said a source close to the deal. A 3G-enabled Samsung phone can be bought for around the same price today. The entry-level smartphones are likely to be sold with data packages starting at as low as Rs 100, said the source, adding that even high-end smartphones will be made available at minimum down-payments and the equated monthly installments (EMIs) will be incorporated in subsequent bills at a 0% interest rate. RIL is planning a soft launch in Mumbai and Delhi by mid-2013 and a formal launch is set to be announced later this year, most likely on December 28, the birth anniversary of Reliance founder, late Dhirubhai Ambani. Both RIL & Samsung declined to comment on the deal. However, sources in the know told TOI: "Samsung will not be just another vendor to RIL supplying handsets as it was when Reliance Infocomm was launched in 2002. They are seeking a much broader role. A possible joint venture could also be in the offering." Reliance itself is not averse to the joint venture model these days, unlike in the past. For Samsung, the JV with RIL will not only pave the way to capture the third biggest mobile market in the world but also allow it to use the India launch to showcase it in the US market as well where it wants to give Apple a tough fight, said sources. Samsung has already scored in the Indian market by taking the first-mover advantage by bagging the RIL deal over its rivals Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent, among others. RIL, which is known for pushing vendors to the wall when it comes to squeezing out margins, apparently hasn't been able to replicate it with Samsung this time as it did a decade ago. The reason: Samsung, which entered the mobile phone business in 1997, is now three times bigger than RIL in terms of sales and four times larger in terms of net profits and is seen to be giving a tough fight to Apple in many markets with its smartphones and tablets. "We went to the Korean giants before the Reliance Infocomm launch to manufacture handsets at $100, a price never heard of then in early 2000. They didn't entertain us then. We came back to our drawing boards, did an in-house research and went back to them showing how handsets can be manufactured within $100 and told them if they don't manufacture handsets for us at that price, we will do it on our own. In the process, they will miss out on a billion-dollar opportunity. That's when they gave in," admitted a Reliance insider on how companies like LG and Samsung had fallen in line to manufacture handsets for RIL during the Infocomm launch 2002.

I am starting this topic for understanding the NV item and generating new dump file when we change or sell our Phones. If you see the NV items received from your seller you can understand that basically we have to change 37 items in Phone’s actual NV adresses in order to use it on Reliance CDMA… These are 0714 (0x02CA) 0460 (0x01CC) 0461 (0x01CD) 4396 (0x112C) 0463 (0x01CF) 0464 (0x01D0) 0462 (0x01CE) 0495 (0x01EF) 0546 (0x0222) 1907 (0x0773) 0465 (0x01D1) 2825 (0x0B09) 0466 (0x01D2) 0465 (0x01D1) 2825 (0x0B09) 0466 (0x01D2) 0465 (0x01D1) 2825 (0x0B09) 0466 (0x01D2) 0465 (0x01D1) 2825 (0x0B09) 0466 (0x01D2) 0465 (0x01D1) 2825 (0x0B09) 0466 (0x01D2) 0465 (0x01D1) 2825 (0x0B09) 0466 (0x01D2) 0459 (0x01CB) 1194 (0x04AA) 0579 (0x0243) 1192 (0x04A8) 0580 (0x0244) 2953 (0x0B89) 0910 (0x038E) 0906 (0x038A) 8035 (0x1F63) You can see that many addresses are repeated in dump file. Please note that its just the location of addresses where we have to input the value. Input value will be same for all similar address. For example 0465 is repeated 6 times but value for all 0465 address will be same. Now for understading what these address refers to you can go through the following topic of XDA : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33230579 Don’t worry about the long list in above tutorial; what we need to understand is basically 4-5 items only. Most of the addresses in above 37 items have same value. I will group the address together which are having same value : ADDRESS VALUE 0465, 2825, 2953, 910, 906 net 579,1194 meid@hrpd.rcom.co.in (Replace meid with your Phones MEID) 466 HIGHLYSECRETWORDnet 580,1192 MIN REST ALL Leave it as it was in old dump file Now if you have any latest NV dump file then basically you have to edit only 579,1194,580 & 1192 as value of all other addresses will remain same in new dump file also. Please care that older NV dump file may have different values because previously we were using our MDN as Username and Password i.e. 0465, 2825, 2953, 910, 906 has to be changed to “net” in older Dump file. Similarly you will find HIGHLYSECRETWORD(your MDN) in address 0466. All these addresses are entered in HEX Format in Dump so to understand dump file and to edit it you need a ASCii to HEX Calculator. I used following online tool for this : http://www.asciitohex.com/ Just copy the ASCii value in text box of above calculator and click Convert. Then check the Hexadecimal Box for corresponding Hex Value. Now enter this value in dump file one by one. Replace the small alphabet to Capital while entering in Dump file. Also dont edit the first Hex value in address as it defines the location. e.g: After editing the Dump file you can upload it to your phone using following topic: http://www.rimweb.in/forums/topic/33225-tutorial-flashing-your-cdma-handset-after-meidesn-registration/?p=255120 Please note that above editing is for 1x only as I am not able to understand address 580 & 1192. If you put your MIN in these address you will get 1x but for EVDO I believe something else has to be entered. I have tried this method on 3-4 phones and was able to get 1x. (Tried on HTC EVO3D & Samsung Fascinate.) My purpose for writing this tutorial is purely to avoid bothering our gurus/sellers again and again for NV dump. I may not be correct in my understanding and request all Gurus to correct and shade some more light on it. I thanks Hetal & Dr. Muffaddal for their help and many tutorials and offcourse Parin who send me every now and then NV dump for various phones.

It is a network connection error, not dongle or service provider's policy. Best is try to avoid buying data SIM for dongle, instead go for normal voice+data mobile SIM. Cellcos are not bothered if you use mobile SIMs on datacards. I used to use Tata Docomo mobile simcard on Vodafone's unlocked dongle for months on normal 2G/3G mobile packages. The actual difference is the recharge denominations, when we try to recharge a data SIM, while entering the subscriber number it will be detected as datacard, while a normal mobile handset sim goes with mobile data packages. The whole list of recharge will differ. Nothing else.
