Handset makers to hit both high- and low-end markets in India DIGITIMES - Wednesday 26 December 2007 With the increasing number of mobile phone users in India, handset makers including Cal-Comp Electronics and Inventec Appliances have both already entered into cooperation with local telecommunication vendors to supply entry-level CDMA and GSM handsets, while High Tech Computer (HTC) plants to launch an own-brand Windows Mobile-based high-end smartphone and is also expected to work with India-based Reliance. Although entry-level handsets still occupy the largest proportion of the India handset market, makers in Taiwan predict that smartphone shipments in 2007 will be around 2.8 million units, while in 2010, the number will increase to five million. The handset market in India totaled over 225 million users at the end of November this year and in March of 2008, India will possibly surpass the US and to become the second largest mobile phone market, according to market reports.

I had a bad experience at Nokia Authorized Service Center. They said that changing some component in the handset would fix my issue and charged Rs.400 for that. But the issue was not fixed and when I told them to check again, they checked and said nothing more can be done. So the 400 bucks was a waste, they could have atleast checked it before charging me. In my opinion, local repair shops would be good for minor repairs.

Source: Hindustan Times Get started with a browser Any web surfing experience can be awesome or awful depending on what browser your phone has. Hence, it would be good to download a decent browser to begin with. Opera Mini is one such browser that can be installed on any Java phone. It basically converts and compresses web pages to suit your phone screen. Often, the browsing experience on mid and lower mid-end phones can be quite uncomfortable and having Opera Mini browser can help. Opera Mini is fast and hence reduces your GPRS consumption. You can download Opera Mini free of cost from www.operamini.com and occupies as little as a 50-60 KB space on your handset. Instant messaging on the go Why waste money on SMS when you already have a GPRS connection? Just download a free Internet messenger on to your handset and keep chatting away with your friends to glory. Check out Nimbuzz (www.nimbuzz.com), a free messenger that integrates your Yahoo!, Google Talk, Skype and MSN messengers all in one. This chat messenger also allows you to make mobile to PC calls. Another option is MovaMessenger, yet another free messenger that even allows you to see avatars or picture profiles of your contacts. Here also you can chat with MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ and Google Talk contacts. MovaMessenger, however, is a bit more heavier and lazier than Nimbuzz, experts say. The application works on any GPRS enabled Java handset. The application is also expected to allow file transfers in a later version. MovaMessenger does not work on Windows mobile handsets. WidSets Stay updated about what's the latest on your favourite websites using WidSets. A WidSet is like an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed that alerts you and pushes information on to your website as soon as it is updated on the website. Go to www.widsets.com and there is an entire library of the WidSets available today. The library currently has WidSets for BBC News, Reuters, Accuweather and Wikipedia amongst others. To download the software, go to www.widsets.com. You will be prompted to download WidSets on your phone. After you have downloaded and installed the software then simply launch it. On launching it, you will see a number of balloon-like structures containing the names of different websites and publications. From these, just pick the one you are looking for. WidSets are free of cost. Unlike RSS feeds that list updates on one side of the webpage, each WidSet gives you information from a different site. Maps So what if you don’t have an expensive GPS (geographical positioning system)-enabled device? You can view a street map of your neighbourhood and maybe even try to spot your own house in there. Try downloading GMaps or Google Maps on your mobile phone and you can view street level maps of places from all over the world. However, in order to get directions and plot routes, you will have to have a GPS service on the handset. Until then, only viewing is possible. Some freeware If you are looking for some free entertainment, try out www.gamejump.com. In exchange for watching a couple of advertisements of two three seconds, you get to play a game that would otherwise cost you some money. The quality of the games is excellent. You can also download some free applications like calendars and e-mail clients among others. We suggest you get an unlimited GPRS connection for your cellphone and make the best of mobile on Internet. Happy surfing!

Reliance Communications slams legal notice to DoT New Delhi, December 27 - IndiaPR Wire Reliance Communications (RCOM), one of the leading CDMA mobile phone operators, Thursday gave legal notice to the department of telecommunications (DoT) to stop it from allocating more radio frequencies to existing operators. This follows the DoT decision to allocate radio spectrum in multiples of 1 MHz to the operators, based on the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) method of subscriber-linked criteria. For this, the DoT will soon file an affidavit in the telecom tribunal and also in the Delhi High Court. According to RCOM, the DoT should follow the method recommended by the Telecom Engineering Centre, which is more stringent than that of TRAI's. TEC recommended raising the subscriber base by up to 15 times against TRAI's six times. 'Rejecting the TEC norms and accepting TRAI norms is arbitrary and illegal and is also contrary to the earlier decision of the DoT to accept the TEC report,' the legal notice stated. The Anil Ambani-promoted company also reiterated its demand that excess spectrum held by the GSM players be returned at the earliest. 'Excess spectrum has been allocated to the existing private GSM operators and the government should immediately take action for getting the extra spectrum back from the existing private GSM operators,' it said. Reliance Communications has also sought surrendering of 50 MHz spectrum that is in possession of the GSM operators. It had earlier alleged that GSM operators were hoarding spectrum beyond their entitlement of 6.2 MHz. The telephony and internet major has also sought refarming of spectrum between 900 MHz and 1800 MHz and its equal distribution among all operators to create a level playing field. It has also stated that refarming of premium 900 MHz spectrum would result in capital expenditure savings of Rs 15,000 crore and annual operational expense savings of Rs 2,000 crore. 'The DoT should also charge extra fees for the excess spectrum from the date of issue of the spectrum to the date of return of the same,' it added. The company Thursday had also accused the DoT of 'succumbing to private GSM operators' pressure tactics.' Now that the government has finally decided to accept TRAI's recommendations, Communications and IT Minister A. Raja, in a written note to the DoT, has urged it to take a re-look at the fee to be paid to get the spectrum. 'Since it has been decided to accept TRAI's subscriber base for allocation of additional spectrum, a decision needs to be taken on spectrum charges,' the note from Raja said. Operators may be required to pay higher fees for obtaining spectrum beyond a certain limit, DoT officials said. According to TRAI's recommendations, spectrum charges in terms of percentage of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) may be increased. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also reiterated this earlier this month, saying the government should not lose earning revenues for the allocation of spectrum, a practice that is followed across the world.

Good news for Anil Ambani on spectrum allocation CNN-IBN Published on Mon, Dec 24, 2007 at 14:16 New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has refused to stay a recent telecom tribunal order allowing operators to offer services using both GSM and the rival CDMA technology. GSM operators such as Airtel and Vodaphone appealed for a stay on the policy, saying the policy has been tweaked to benefit reliance . However, the GSM operators lobby COAI failed to get any relief from Delhi High Court on spectrum allocation. The court refusal to stay the spectrum allocation policy is good news for operators like Reliance Communications. GSM players had argued in court that this policy has been tweaked to help Reliance, which becomes yet another victory for Anil Ambani owned, Reliance Communication. GSM mobile operators had earlier asked the government to seek afresh the views of regulator TRAI on spectrum allocation norms and suspend till such time, distribution of initial or additional frequency.

@Honest: That is right. Reliance BroadNet (wireline) service has been quite good at my place in Trivandrum. Even though the extra 44 kbps does sound like a marketting ploy, those speeds are achievable and constant. BTW, as per the Special Launch offer of VSNL WiMAX, it comes to Rs.500 + tax per month only for 256 kbps unlimited data transfer if you apply for 3 months, hope you had noticed that. -

That is how it will work by default because IMAP will have its own Inbox folders. I don't think it can be merged since IMAP works by contacting the server and will require those seperate folders to be present in Outlook.

I don't think its going to materialize anywhere in the near future... Freeze spectrum allocation till govt finds true value: Prime Minister's Offer. 22nd Dec, 2007 - Times News Network The prime minister’s office (PMO) is learnt to have told the department of telecommunications (DoT) that the entire exercise of issuing start-up GSM spectrum to new entrants should be frozen till the government establishes the “true economic value of such spectrum in a fair, transparent and equitable manner”. The PMO, it is learnt, has stressed that “the communications ministry needs to realise that radio spectrum is a finite and scarce national resource, which is why, all licences bundled with start-up spectrum, must be purely issued based on economic principles”. The PMO’s intervention could hurt the GSM ambitions of CDMA operators Reliance Communications, Tatas, HFCL and Shyam Telecom, who want to offer services based on GSM technology. The PMO is said to be unhappy with the Union communications ministry’s handling of the protracted spectrum row, which shows no signs of an early resolution, sources added. As of now a pan-India licence to offer 2G telecom services, which costs Rs 1,651 crore, comes bundled with 4.4 MHz of GSM spectrum. Service providers are only charged a separate fee for this initial spectrum, but are only mandated to pay a percentage of their annual revenues as spectrum fee. While this could not be independently confirmed, it is understood, that the PMO is favourably disposed to the auctioning of 2G spectrum for both new entrants and existing GSM operators (read: Idea, Vodafone and Spice) whose applications for new licences/spectrum are languishing at the DoT for months. This can imply that the licence fee of Rs 1651 crore will not guarantee spectrum as telcos will have to bid for radio frequencies. “The PMO is also aware that the telecom regulator TRAI, in its February 2003 recommendations, had suggested the bidding route for new licences that came bundled with spectrum, which effectively implies auctioning of 2G spectrum for new entrants, including CDMA players keen to enter the GSM club through the dual technology route,” a senior bureaucrat close to the developments told ET. When contacted, a top DoT official said that the department had not received any directive from the PMO. The official added that the department had already constituted an internal committee to determine the economic value of the 4.4 MHz of start-up spectrum, which would be charged to all new entrants, in addition to the licence fee of Rs 1,651 crore. “The committee will submit its report soon, possibly in the next one week,” the DoT source added. All existing operators who want additional spectrum will also be charged ‘the economic value’ for the quantum of extra frequency they get, a top DoT source had earlier told ET, while adding the prime minister was referring to this additional spectrum fee when he said that the government must not lose sight of the revenue potential from this scarce resource. While the PMO has not named any specific company, it has indicated to the DoT that no future allocation of spectrum should be done in a way that subverts the system or robs the government of a substantial revenue opportunity. “Ideally, the DoT would do well to establish auction mechanisms for each spectrum band as there are several tried and tested auctioning formulae,” said a top government official close to the PMO.
