Excerpts From Cnbc-tv18's Exclusive Interview With Sp Shukla
Arun posted a topic in Reliance Communications
2007-06-01 13:41:41 - Moneycontrol.com Q: Start off by telling us the kind of slashes that have now been introduced by Rel Comm, both in the international and the interstate divisions? A: Yes, there has been some very good news once again for Reliance customers. Let’s talk about roaming first. Today, we have introduced two more new plans, which are coming on top of the leadership we took 10 days ago for our customers, by announcing special tariff plans. Further, consumer insight which has been coming, shows that a lot of our customers need incoming roaming free, so that they don’t have to worry about taking a call when they are roaming outside their home state or home circle. We have introduced two plans. The first one, for the customers who have heavy usage. They can just subscribe to our 990 plan and they will get a whopping 900 minutes. That means 15 hours of incoming talk-time free while they are roaming. These days nobody possibly needs more than 15 hours of free incoming while roaming. For smaller users, we have introduced 390 plan, so that they will get 200 minutes or three and a half hours of talking while traveling in a month. Three and a half hours of incoming talk while someone is traveling four or five days outside his/her home state is sufficient to meet the requirement of any customers. And put on top of it, the tariffs are Re 0.40, Re 0.50 and Re 1 for making outgoing calls; I believe that our customers have got a fantastic deal. Q: So, effectively for you as a company in percentage terms, how much have you slashed roaming rates both for incoming and outgoing? A: If you compare it with prescribed ceiling rates, our prescribed ceiling rates are at Rs 2.40 for outgoing calls and for any STD, we are offering rates as low as Re 1. Prescribed rate, which is the ceiling rate, is today at Rs 1.75 for incoming calls and now we are offering it free. Last week, we had announced 70% reduction on selected plans. In this plan, actually we have made incoming roaming calls free altogether for our customers up to a certain number of minutes on which the ceiling has been put very generously, so that no customer will feel the pinch. You can’t possibly talk more than 15 hours in a month while roaming. Q: Last time when we spoke, you had introduced the 777 plan. Can you update us in terms of what kind of subscriber additions you have had, particularly in that segment? A: In fact, this has been one of the greatest success stories. As you know we sold 1 million handsets within 7-8 days of our launch. In fact, I have heard that there were long queues in Bellary, Karnataka recently. There was such a rush that some of our stores had to really request people to stand in the queue before taking the handsets. The response has been fantastic. The success story of black and white has continued in 1234 plan, which we launched in the middle of May. Similar story has been repeated there as well. Almost 0.5 million handsets have been sold in a very small period; colour phones were also available at the price point of Rs 1,234. So, you can see the numbers are just piling up. Q: Will this show up in your monthly additions? What kind of additions can we expect from Rel Comm this time? A: Additions will be very good. Yes, it will show up in additions. Some of it will go as new subscribers, some as upgrades of our existing customers because any handset sale you do, part of it goes towards the existing base. So, the numbers are not very far, we are compiling them. You will hear them in a day or two. Q: Even as a ballpark, how much do you expect to see - 20% or 30%? A: There will be a fantastic growth on that. Q: The concern really is with the slashing of these rates and the kind of introduction you have across new handsets, what happens to your margins? Can you give us a sense of what you are seeing right now both in terms of ARPUs and minutes of usage at this point for these new programmes? A: That is a very insightful question. Actually, if you look at the roaming customers, what we are counting on and past assumptions we have, the usage of a customer goes up because of price elasticity equation. When you are thinking that you are paying Rs 3 or Rs 4 a minute, your calling pattern is different than when you think that you are paying Re 1 a minute or Rs 0.40 a minute. There is an absolute change in your calling pattern. As a result, our revenues have always reached the same level within a few weeks of any tariff cut. This has been our experience in the past that customer restores his revenue to the original level very quickly, once he realises that he can talk more for the same amount. So, we are confident that our ARPUs will be maintained. In fact, I am confident of getting customers from other operators where the customers are perhaps paying high charges; many of them may switch over to us. As a result, our mix may be getting even better. Q: Just one final question really, on how things have fared in terms of what you are doing with the tower side of your business and whether you have finalised any plans on that and unlocking that side? A: Yes, we have made various announcements recently. Our plans are going absolutely as per schedule. We will be putting up more than 20,000 towers in a very short while and orders have been placed, construction is at pace. The work is going on at high speed. -

1) Yes, if you want to opt for the data plan (i.e., with data limit per month), you need to get a Data Card connection. With a phone connection you can get the time based plan only. You need not pay any rent for the voice (phone) plan by opting for the default voice plan (Joy 149) as it is included with the data plan (freedom, freedom plus, platinum), so you can make calls/sms (free 100 sms is there) also if you wish. 2) I use the Huawei Data Card (~Rs.4000) and I get around 115 - 125 kbps average speed. It may vary depending upon the network congestion in different places. I've noticed that data cards get more speed than mobile phone. 3) Other than first time installation issues, you won't run into much technical issues. If it is a connectivity issue, that will be something to do with the network, so you have to wait until they rectify that. 4) Unlimited data transfer is in the Platinum plan at Rs.1500/month, so make sure you get a data card. No, NetConnect is recommended only if you are going to use internet on your laptop (i.e., if you move/travel) or if Broadband is not available in your area. At Rs.1000 per month, you should be able to get a 256 kbps broadband connection with unlimited data transfer. Reliance NetConnect Tariff Plans

Can CDMA players apply for GSM spectrum? 1 Jun, 2007 l 0209 hrs IST Times News Network While the controversy on the future of 3G spectrum is consuming the industry, Trai and the government alike, a new challenge relating to 2G spectrum is emerging in the forefront. According to sources in Trai, it is set to float a consultation paper any day specifically to address the question of whether a CDMA operator is eligible to apply for GSM spectrum. This issue specifically relates to Reliance Infocomm, a nationwide CDMA operator that also operates GSM in eight circles. At the heart of the controversy is a policy decision made by the government in 1999 allowing technology neutrality for mobile licences in India. Now Reliance, which has made its ambitions to enter the GSM mobile business clear, has applied for 2G spectrum in the GSM band rather than the CDMA band, in 16 circles where it wishes to operate GSM services. The association for GSM operators, COAI, is opposing this possibility of a crossover of technologies or allocation of 2G GSM spectrum for CDMA operators on grounds that GSM operators deserve priority, especially as spectrum is a scarce resource. COAI quotes a 1999 case of BPL mobile (now Hutch Essar), which was denied CDMA frequency from the government on grounds that it was earmarked for basic service applications. COAI says a DoT notification of April 2001 also supports their point. However, the fact that government-owned operator, MTNL actually uses a single licence to operate both CDMA and GSM — Garuda and Dolphin, makes the debate more complex. If MTNL can be allowed to operate simultaneous technologies using a single licence then why can't others, counters Reliance. To help resolve these complexities, the DoT has written to Trai seeking its intervention in this matter. Ironically, the second CDMA operator, Tata Teleservices, tends to side with COAI. Confirming its commitment to CDMA, the company believes technology neutrality cannot be interpreted to mean a combination of both technologies. An operator must choose one technology and grow with it or, if it wants to migrate to an alternative technology, it must forego spectrum in the first, it says . CDMA was once seen as the new kid on the block, a technology expected to challenge GSM's dominance. However, GSM has since evolved manifold and continues to have an edge over CDMA especially when it comes to roaming. 2G spectrum refers to the spectrum that is currently used by GSM and CDMA mobile operators to serve nearly 160 million subscribers across the country. 3G spectrum, on the other hand, is available in separate bands distinct from 2G and is considered more efficient, especially when it comes to non-voice applications. Several developed countries have multiple operators in this regime. eh, maybe its going to get delayed further !

BSNL, MTNL cut roaming charges Financial Express Friday, June 01, 2007 at 1259 hours IST NEW DELHI, JUNE 1: State-run telecom operators MTNL and BSNL have slashed national roaming charges to Re 1 for incoming calls and Re 0.40 for outgoing calls within any visiting network as part of a new post-paid plan to be launched on June 3. The monthly rental for the plan has been fixed at Rs 550. The subscribers will also get 300 minutes of free talktime for receiving calls. The call rates of Re 1 will apply after the free talktime is exhausted. However, outgoing calls to networks outside the visiting state will be charged at Re 1. Both the operators are expecting 20-25 per cent jump in their traffic from this scheme. Telecom Minister A Raja had earlier said his department was looking at the possibility of lowering the domestic roaming charges, as planned by his predecessor Dayanidhi Maran. Maran, had planned to abolish the domestic roaming charges on the occasion of his party (DMK) President M Karunanidhi's birthday on June 3.

Which software are you using for editing images ? What error do you get when running Windows Media Player ? I haven't tried PocketMusic Player but I think it is suited for Windows Mobile 2003 edition. I use Core Player (coreplayer.com) for playing music and videos, works great !

Yes, the dump file will contain more technical information about the error. It is the Mini042207-03.dmp file which you can find in the path as mentioned in your screenshot (C:\DOCUME~1\...). Zip and attach it, I will check if it gives any clue.

Using Zte Pcmia.fast But Torrents Fail To Pick Up Speed?
Arun replied to abishek2222's topic in Data services
I just tried using NetConnect and I am able to get about the same speed when I used uTorrent to download files, the same speed that I get normally on NetConnect. -
It is likely that the voice mail you received had expired by now as I think old voice mails will get removed at certain intervals. If it says there is no voice mail when you dial *600, then there is no chance to retrieve it now.

As of now Reliance is offerring only corporate connections (through a company) for UTStarcom PPC 6700. They expect it to make it available for other customers soon. If you get the RUIM based version (available in China), you "may be" able to use with a Reliance RUIM card, not sure. Or else you can check this topic if interested: http://www.rimweb.in/forums/index.php?showtopic=9131

They will supply you the ADSL modem and you need not configure anything else. The quality of service is top notch and I haven't seen much downtimes. These are the Data based plans available: Plan 299 Download speed up to 2 Mbps Plan charges - Rs. 299 Bundled usage - 1 GB Additional usage - 90p / MB Plan 550 Download speed up to 2 Mbps Plan charges - Rs. 550 Bundled usage - 2.5 GB Additional usage - 90p / MB

If you can attach the dump file (Mini042207-03.dmp) as a zip file, I could look into it. BTW, when you attach screenshot image files, please use jpeg or gif only.

CDMA Frequency is 800 MHz for Reliance Communications currently, they are looking to adopt 1900 Mhz if the Government clears the deck for them.

I think it was Samsung SCH-i730 that was discussed before. This one sounds great... the slide out QWERTY keyboards looks like that of UTStarcom 6700 and the features too, except that this one comes with Windows Mobile 6.0 !
