Business Standard January 17, 2007 09:15 IST For millions of non-resident Indians, remitting money could soon be an SMS away. Led by Indian telecom companies like Bharti Airtel under the aegis of the GSM Association - the global body of GSM mobile operators - a unique experiment will be launched in February to make global money transfers through the mobile phone on a common platform a reality. Over 20 operators from the Philippines, Mexico, Russia, Europe, the US and the UK and big names like Vodafone have been roped in for the pilot project, with commercial launch expected in the next 12 months. The project, to be christened the "Emerging Markets Money Transfer Project," aims to find a low-cost means of transferring small denominations of money by leveraging mobile technology for the masses. The mobile-based system could revolutionise the way hundreds of trillions of dollars are transferred. It will allow, say, a textile worker in Dubai to transfer money to his parents in Ahmedabad through a monthly SMS instruction. The system will work like this. In Dubai, the worker uses the phone company's money transfer service to remit cash from his bank or credit card. All he needs to do is dial his parent's phone number in India and wait for a message to be flashed on his screen that the transfer is complete. His parents then just need to walk to the nearest phone store, (which is also a money transfer agent and is linked to a bank), and encash the amount. "This will solve the biggest challenge for non-resident workers - how to transfer small amounts of money back to India or their state of origin," said Ashok Juneja, director, Bharti Airtel, who is coordinating the project in India. Money transfer companies charge as much as $15-20 as commission for a transfer of $100 in India. Given that mobile phone companies already have large distribution networks in place, such transfers at low commission are possible. GSMA will be working on creating a common technology platform for ensuring inter-portability among operators to make mobile money transfer possible and easier. They will also leverage global volumes of such transfers to get more attractive transaction rates from global banks. Of course, many regulatory issues need to be tackled before the project can become a reality in India and in other developing countries. Admits Juneja, "There are some issues that need to be sorted out with the Reserve Bank of India." For instance, operators with their outlets have to become money transfer agents and cash in and cash out have to be allowed. The RBI is also concerned about ensuring adequate safeguards, including adherence to the know-your-customer (customer identification) norms.

Bangalore To Become First Wireless Broadband City Of India?
Arun replied to shashank's topic in The Lounge
WiMAX now in Bangalore 19/01/2007 - The Hindu Bangalore has joined the elite club of cities enjoying high-speed wireless Internet services, popularly called WiMAX. Aircel Business Solutions (ABS) on Thursday launched the WiMAX service in the city. Base stations (towers) have been set up at Electronics City, Airport Road, St. John's Road, Jayanagar, Rajajinagar and Koramangala, each covering a radius of 5 km to 6 km. More will come up shortly, said Ram Shinde, Business Head, ABS, part of Chennai-based Aircel. ABS would also create Wi-Fi (wireless internet) hotspots in the city where Internet services would be available through the use of pre-paid cards. Online registration would also be possible, Mr. Shinde said. Those opting for WiMAX would be able to access the Internet anywhere in the city, he said. Initially, WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) will be made available to big corporates and small and medium enterprises at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh. Individuals will have to wait three months for WiMAX because the modem required for the connection is not readily available, and has to be imported. Aircel is mass-producing the modems and will supply them free of cost in three months. Imported modems known as customer premises equipment (CPE) cost $ 400 (Rs. 18,000). The payment for WiMAX will be on a monthly basis, and there will be the option of using pre-paid cards. It will eventually cover Mangalore, Mysore and Belgaum. Mr. Shinde said the charges would be on a par with those offered by BSNL. In the near future, 26 more cities including Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi, Cochin and Ahmedabad will get WiMAX. WiMAX is more efficient in preventing virus attacks. Connections would be given within 48 hours after applications were submitted, Mr. Shinde said. The connectivity would be upgraded so as to enable access to Internet through mobile phones while on the move even at the speed of 60 kmph. ------------- Not sure whether they are really going to supply the modems free of cost else its costly for the end user to implement -

Techtree.com January 16, 2007 Reportedly, the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has imposed a hefty fine of Rs 50 lakhs to be paid jointly by Airtel and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) for their failure to stop unnerving and unsolicited calls and SMSes by telemarketing and banking companies to mobile users. The State Consumer Commission, headed by Justice J D Kapoor, also imposed a joint penalty of Rs 25 lakhs on ICICI Bank and the American Express Bank for causing immense nuisance by making unsolicited communications such as SMSes and telemarketing calls at odd hours to cellular users. The order has been passed on a complaint filed by Delhi-based Nivedita Sharma against Airtel, ICICI, and American Express Bank alleging that she had been receiving unsolicited calls and SMSes on her mobile phone. Sharma had alleged that even after lodging a complaint with Airtel, she used to receive 15 to 20 such calls in a day that caused disturbance to her. The Commission, in its earlier interim order, has issued a general direction to all mobile service providers, telemarketing companies, and banks to ensure no mobile user was disturbed without consent. According to the Commission, it is very sad and disheartening that these communications create nuisance and disturbance to the day-to-day work of the consumers as these calls are made at odd hours, and when the person is in a business meeting or some other important work, or in emergency. It not only harasses but also unduly interferes with the right to privacy of a person, causing unnecessary financial loss to the subscriber when they attend to such calls even when they are on national or international roaming. In a statement, Justice Kapoor, said that these damages are being imposed because of 'care-a-fig for' attitude of cellular operators and telemarketers, and their having continued to indulge in making unsolicited commercial communications such as SMSes, telemarketing calls, etc at odd hours. And thereby causing immense nuisance in spite of the fact they were issued notice by the Supreme Court in a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) in 2003, and inspite of orders passed by this Commission from time to time for not indulging in such practices. Justice Kapoor added that these acts also pose a grave threat, and jeopardize the safety and security of the consumer by sharing his confidential information such as name, address, mobile number, financial standing with others. Justice Kapoor also took the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to task for not starting a national 'do-not-call' registry despite being aware of consumers' problems in view of the above-mentioned PIL. Justice Kapoor hinted that it appears that the cellular service providers, financial institutions, banks, and other companies who sell their products through tele-marketing are in league with the TRAI, and that theirs is an 'unholy trinity'.

There is a shoutbox plugin available for IPB, but it has been known to be vulnerable to exploits in the recent past. It isn't available to the new IPB version yet, so have to wait and see if it is released.

Yes, it was being worked upon, unfortunately we had to scrap the plan recently due to some unavoidable problems. There is no other new plan as of now. If there is any news on it later, it would be announced.
-
That would be Rs.18 If you are using it daily like that, your per month usage charges would run more than Rs.500 If you opt for the Freedom @ Night NetConnect plan at Rs.400 per month, you can use internet without per hour usage charges between 10 PM to 6 AM. If you are using the default voice plan for your FWP, you can save the voice plan rental as well if you opt for the Freedom @ Night plan, as it is included.

He can change to a voice plan with low rental during that time and he would be charged lesser according to that voice plan on a pro-rated basis. Once he is back, he can switch to the Data Plan. So it isn't a temporary disconnection (which isn't possible) but helps in lesser rental for that period.

could be even later than that in India !

A tough competitor to Blackberry and other Smartphones indeed. But I read that only Apple can add software to the phone, which is a serious shortcoming. Apple said no comments about developing software., so it isn't sure whether custom software can be developed. Another thumbs down is that it is not 3G ! It costs around Rs.27,000 (US$ 600) in the US, so if it is released in India, that should cost around Rs.40,000 if it is launched now. If this product is any success into the well saturated mobile market, the credit would go to the hype and marketing of Apple, not because it is superior to any other.

Was the driver installation successful ? Did it detect the modem and was the driver and dialer installation process complete without any error ?

Have you checked with Customer Care on whether your Data Connection is activated or not ?

What Do You Think About Our Present Indian Cricket Team ?
Arun replied to Kunal Hemrajani's topic in The Lounge
Depends on the players form at that time. In the present situation, almost everyone is out of form that India won't even see the semis at 2007 World Cup. Changing the players or coach won't do any difference as its the player's form that keep changing and one cannot predict that. -
Anil Ambani to pursue Hutch deal: Reliance Comunications Board Reliance Communications to start due diligence from tomorrow Business Standard - Mumbai - January 10, 2007 Reliance Communications has reaffirmed its interest in acquiring Hutch-Essar, and approved raising of $1 billion through issuance of Foreign Currency Convertible Bonds (FCCBs). The company is also looking at various models of raising long-term resources like external commercial borrowings (ECBs) for funding the acquisition. The company's board, which met here today, approved issuance of FCCBs of upto $1 billion in global markets. The FCCBS would be issued in one or more tranches and at a premium to the present market price, the company informed Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today. It has also authorised the company chairman Anil Ambani "to take all necessary steps for this purpose" (acquisition), including raising of resources. However, the company also cautioned that there is "no certainty either on the completion or timing" of the buyout. When contacted a Reliance spokesperson declined to comment, stating that the company had sent the mandatory statement to the stock exchanges. Hong Kong-based billionaire Li Ka-Shing had put his 67% stake in Indian GSM operator Hutch-Essar for sale, which he holds through Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd (HTIL). The remaining 33% is held by Indian business conglomerate, Essar Group. Reliance Communications, which had earlier sought regulatory approval for $1.2 billion global depository receipts (GDR), has also received commitments of another $2 billion from four global private equity majors. The global majors — Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co (KKR), Blackstone Group, Carlyle Group and Apax Partners – had sought 10-12% stake in Hutch-Essar, if RCL wins the bid. The company was also in discussions with American billionaire and financier George Soros, who manages over $21 billion of funds, and the New York-based Warburg Pincus for raising equity for the acquisition. It is also believed to have received financial commitments of $15 billion from global bankers. The enterprise value of Hutch-Essar was hovering around $17.5 billion. PTI adds: Reliance Communications would start the process of 'confirmatory due diligence' on Hutch-Essar tomorrow. The Anil Ambani Group firm would start examining the books of India's fourth-largest mobile player tomorrow along with its advisor KPMG and investment bankers JP Morgan, ABN Amro and HSBC, sources close to the developments said.
