  1. Cricket is not your property, COAI tells BCCI - The Hindu Business Line New Delhi , April 2, 2006 In a new twist to the row over sending cricket updates through SMS, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has questioned the authority of the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) as the governing body controlling the game of cricket in India. In a missive to the BCCI, the cellular operators said that cricket has been played in the country for over 100 years and BCCI is only a `society that organises cricket for profit-making. The COAI letter comes in the wake of a legal notice sent by the BCCI against cellular operators for offering cricket updates of the ongoing India-England series to their subscribers through SMS. The BCCI notice had also asked operators to refrain from similar activities in future without obtaining prior permission of the Board. Responding to the BCCI notice, cellular operators said, "Cricket has been played in India for over a century and it is shocking that BCCI can seek to claim property rights over the awareness of the game, and the scores and information on who is batting and who is out, or on so-called "live instant information" or "current events." These are matters that are within the public domain and you cannot claim a right over these. Such a property right has not been recognised by any statute in India." COAI further added "claims that it is the "central Body for governing and controlling the game of cricket in India" and is "responsible for organising all the international cricket matches to be played in India" were pompous, untrue and denied. BCCI is a mere society involved in the activity of organising cricket matches for profit. It holds no statutory backing or `central' or exclusive status. Cricket is just a game, and cannot be privatised by BCCI, to the exclusion of anybody." COAI said that BCCI had been licensing out television rights and audio rights, not as Intellectual Property Rights, but only as rights as the organiser of the event to permit or disallow entry into the stadium with heavy equipment, and to utilise space and infrastructure for the purpose of filming the match or recording the commentary.

  6. World phones to come calling in a month Surajeet Das Gupta / New Delhi February 24, 2006 Business Standard Mobile phone users will have something more to rejoice over. World phones, which can work on both CDMA as well as GSM networks, are about to debut in the country in the next four to six weeks. Tata Indicom is in the midst of finalising contracts with phone manufacturers like Motorola and Samsung to offer these phones to customers bundled with their service at over Rs 15,000. For those who are looking for a cheaper device — top executives in the company say— a phone for less than Rs 10,000 will be available in the market by the end of the year. Even Reliance Infocomm is testing World phones from at least two to three vendors and telecom industry experts say they will be in the market in the next three to four months. “We are definitely testing World phone and hope to introduce them in the market,” says a Reliance Infocomm spokesperson. The World phones will have slots for putting in two separate SIM cards( in CDMA these cards are known as RUIM or removable user identity module) — one of which can be used for a GSM card and the other for a CDMA card. Users can shift from one service to another with a press of a button. Initially, the World phone will make a lot of business sense to customers who travel abroad. Users of CDMA phones who travel to, say Europe, where only GSM services are available will no longer need to carry separate phones. Similarly GSM consumers can use the phone while roaming in markets like South Korea and even in large parts of the US where operators like Sprint and Verizon offer CDMA services. Tata Indicom is expected to launch the service initially for corporates and at the higher end of the market, but it will be followed quickly bya mass-based offering.
  7. Software For Ringtones & Wallpapers

I don't think anything else is possible other than ringtones/wallpapers. I believe Ashoksoft and Static have done some reasearch on this before.
  8. Kyocera Private Limited in Banglore will charge you Rs.6000 (including taxes) for replacing the phone board, if you are sending it to them. They would make sure several other parameters are checked to perfection so that the efficiency of the phone would be increased thereby minimising the chance of this problem happenning again. But paying for replacing the phone board with a new one won't cover you with warranty.
  9. Its just above Rs.500 (9.90 Euro) per month. You can use any download manager and even download directly from the URL, ie., you need not have to visit the rapidshare website to start downloading.. just copy and paste to your download manager. You can download upto 3 GB per day, and if you are unable to download for a few days, you can download upto 10 GB per day. Also, you will gain points which can be redeemed if people download from the contents you have uploaded. And yes, you can share the account with your trusted friends ! I've been using RapidShare Premium and its well worth it.
  10. Surf Reliance, talk Hutch Business Standard Sunil Jain | March 24, 2006 Anyone who's used a CDMA mobile, even the existing generation of them, knows they're far superior to anything the GSM lot have to offer including the EDGE-enabled ones -- the GSM lot say once they move to a 3G platform, the data experience will be the same, but since there are no 3G platforms available in the country, that's a claim you can't test at the moment. But since there are a lot more GSM phones, and providers in the world than there are CDMA ones, most would hesitate at the idea of using a CDMA phone, especially if you travel a lot. There's a solution to the problem now, fortunately. It's called the WorldMode Phone, a phone that allows you to use either CDMA or GSM platforms, so you can literally surf Reliance/Tata and talk Hutch/Airtel! While the first such phone I saw was some months ago when the Reliance Infocomm people got some CDMA bigwig to clear the air on the spectral efficiency of the two mobile platforms, I saw another a few weeks ago at a mobile phone exhibition in the capital where the Tatas were discussing the possibility of launching it in India soon. There were also CDMA phones that had chips in them -- so you could seamlessly change your CDMA mobile and simply change the chip much the same way you do today with GSM mobile handsets. This is the CDMA group's first genuine attempt to capture what you could call the High Call Worth Individual, the mobile phone equivalent of what bankers call High Net Worth Individuals. So far, very few well-heeled types have ever wanted to use CDMA phones since they could never travel with them. Indeed, the CDMA Group's website acknowledges precisely this when it says, "For CDMA2000 subscribers, WorldMode creates a world without boundaries. It means greater convenience for users who will no longer need to carry multiple handsets. It means one consolidated bill. It means increased productivity. It means a true sense of freedom … It means high-revenue subscribers." Lots more on the cards A host of WorldMode phones are already on the market from companies such as Motorola, LG and Samsung. Hitachi, Sanyo and Toshiba are in the process of coming out with their phones. And among the operators who are already offering such WorldMode phone services are China Unicom, Pelephone, Sprint Nextel, Telus Mobility, Verizon Wireless and VIVO. In India, the Tatas are looking at it, as is Reliance. WorldMode phones today operate in GSM/CDMA2000 mode in the 800/900/1800/1900 MHz bands. Chipsets with enhanced functionality, which will allow CDMA20000 subscribers to use data services on GSM/GPRS and WCDMA network and will operate in 800/900/1800/1900/ 21000 MHz, are on their way. This particular handset I used, the Samsung SCH-A790 was commercially launched in May 2004 with Sprint-Nextel and Verizon Wireless offering it in the US. The phone is a CDMA device that allows you to insert a GSM chip. I tried using this phone, a Verizon one, and was able to switch it to a GSM network in India and then use it. There was a problem switching from the Verizon network to the Reliance CDMA one in India - so I could surf the Net to get to feel the real speed - but I've been assured this is more a problem with the connectivity agreements between the companies and is a temporary phenomenon. Another few months, or less, it is said, the interface will be seamless. The phone, a flip one, weighs just 119 grams, offers camera capabilities from 1 to 5 megapixel, and has the usual other features in this genre. While the prices of such phones appear high right now, manufacturers say once the volumes go up, the prices will fall. You can expect the prices of such phones to be similar to other high-end phones, that is, anywhere between Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. More likely, the phones will come bundled with the service offer, as they do in most other countries, in which case, the pricing will be even more attractive. Verizon offers the Samsung A795 for $349.99 if you opt for a two-year plan, and $399.99 for a one-year plan. It offers a Motorola A840 WorldPhone for $499 for a one-year contract. LG's VX-8100 which is also offered by Verizon in the US has a 1.3 megapixel camera, can save up to 15 video clips of 15 seconds each, or 100 still pictures, has a self-timer and allows speed dialing for 99 numbers, has dual speakers, and the facility to store 200 voice memos. The phone operates on the BREW platform and that also allows operators to allow users to change their menus on the air, and do things like accessing their phone and calendar databases online as well. The Kyocera KX5, which is just 48 mm x 99mm x 22 mm slides out to reveal the keypad, weighs a mere 110 grams, has a 16 MB on-board storage which is then expandable up to 512 MB. It can support seven types of music formats from MP3 to AAC and MP4. The Kyocera KX2 weighs a bit more (115 grams) and is offered in India by Reliance Infocomm.

  12. R-ADAG brand identity likely next month only - Financial Express Friday, March 24, 2006 at 0000 hours IST MUMBAI, MARCH 23: In a bid to impart a fresh identity to the Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG) companies, the group will unveil its new logo and brand identity as early as April this year. R-ADAG has roped in UK-based strategic brand consulting and design company Landor Associates to design the company’s new look. Confirming the development, Sanjay Bhel, head branding and marketing, Reliance Communications, told FE, “The new brand identity will be unveiled as early as April this year. We have roped in the best consultants in the world.” However, he did not reveal the details of the brand logo and the new brand identity. Analysts believe that the decision to seek a fresh brand identity and possibly a new logo was based on R-ADAG’s desire to break away from the heavy industry tag of Reliance Industries and to reflect its intensely customer oriented businesses like telecommunications, finance and energy distribution. However, R-ADAG will continue to use the word ’Reliance’ and the Reliance logo either ’behind the visual’ or the graphical representation of the letter ‘R’ with flame in the background, as per the trademark management agreement (TMA) signed between RIL and R-ADAG companies. As per the TMA, both the groups will be allowed to use the logo for their existing businesses and any new business that they may start first. The groups are also allowed to use the logo and trademark for co-branding arrangements too. When asked whether RIL was also looking at a new brand identity, a source close to the company said, “We are not contemplating any such change. We are the original Reliance company and will continue to use the Reliance brand and logo as usual.” Televisionpoint.com reports: After the split of the Reliance Group of companies, an agreement has been signed by the camps for sharing of the Reliance logo and trademark. Both the groups are now allowed to use the logo for their existing businesses and any new business that they may start first. The groups are also allowed to use the logo and trademark for co-branding arrangements too. The ADAG group has also signed up agencies like Mudra, O&M, JWT, Leo Burnett, Lowe Contract, and Everest Brand Solutions for its Rs 120 crore account. Optimum Media Solutions (OMS), Mudra Group's specialist practice division will continues as the agency of record (AOR) for all the ADAG brand accounts. Effective March 15, 2006, Reliance corporate is handled by Mudra and O&M, Reliance Infocomm is split between Mudra, Leo Burnett, Contract and Everest Brand Solutions. JWT and Lowe look after the Reliance Capital business. Televisionpoint.com, had first reported that the Anil Ambani group companies demand a complete makeover. Creative as well as media agencies have been invited for a pitch and that the group is looking at overhauling its branding and communication strategies. Post the Reliance split, Anil had inherited the entire customer facing businesses of the Reliance Group.

As per the terms of the broad-ended contract, the ace cricketer will endorse the company's products and services through advertising campaigns and other such promotional programmes that may be evaluated for brand fitment during the term of the agreement. Dhoni's contract provides for his utilization for brand endorsements for Reliance Energy Ltd. also. Said an elated Dhoni, "It's a great feeling to be associated with India's youngest yet one of top three business houses that has impressed us all with its dynamism, aggression and, meteoric growth. I see in the company/group a potential global winner and am really excited to be its partner in the grand journey." 16. Lifetime validity offers galore

No tariff hikes in lifetime schemes: TRAI - Rediff.com March 22, 2006 15:22 IST Keeping the consumer's interest in mind, telecom regulator TRAI Wednesday ordered that telecom companies promising schemes of lifetime validity in mobile connectivity cannot increase tariffs in such schemes during the entire period. "Hike in tariff is prohibited for any tariff item specified in the lifetime tariff plans during the entire lifelong validity period. In the case of tariff plans other than plans with lifetime validity which have a component of upfront payment, service providers are not allowed to hike tariffs during the promised validity period of such plans", TRAI said in its order. TRAI had asked the operators who had offered such schemes on what would happen if there was a change in traffic patterns and Interconnect Usage Charge regime and how the consumers would be protected against a hike in tariff. The Cellular Operator Association of India had urged the regulator to allow operators to hike tariffs in an effort to meet any revision in IUC regime. The regulator has now struck down this request and has put to rest one of the most crucial issues in these plans. "With a view to protecting the interests of subscribers who make an upfront payment in lieu of certain promised features, including the validity, and also to bring more clarity to the concept of lifetime validity, the Authority considered it necessary to issue orders in this regard. The order said that in case of tariff plans offered or marketed as having lifetime or unlimited validity in lieu of an upfront payment, subscribers to such plans will continue to get service as long as the service provider is permitted to do so under the current licence or renewed licence. The service providers who offer such plans will inform the subscribers of the month and year of the expiry of current licence. And in case of tariff plans other than lifetime validity schemes, subscribers to them will also continue to get service during the entire promised validity period. The subscriber will have the right to choose any tariff plan at any point of time, TRAI said.
  17. Trai issues norms on bills, services [ Tuesday, March 21, 2006 11:57:52 pm - TIMES NEWS NETWORK ] NEW DELHI: Unhappy with your phone bills, or the way your operator changes your service provisions without your consent? Well, there is some help on way. Telecom regulator Trai has issued a set of regulations that phone companies must adhere to and keep their customers in know of what's happening to their bills and services. To begin with, your phone company will not be able to unilaterally'restrict or cease service' without advance notice and giving you'reasonable time' to take preventive action against such a move. Trai did not define what would be reasonable time. Phone companies will have to give their customers detailed information on tariffs. Service providers will have to inform customers in writing, within a week of activation of service, the complete details of (their) tariff plans. Similarly, phone companies will have to state upfront the charge of value added/interactive services like download of film clips, ring tones, games and the like, before a customer commits to the use of service. Trai says, changes which ever need to be made in the provision of services, will have to be agreed upon by the customer in writing. On payments, it has said that a company will have to credit the cleared bill to your account within three working days. In case of pre-paid subscribers, the top-up credit will have to be applied within 15 minutes. TRAI has issued a regulation on 'Code of Practice for Metering and Billing Accuracy'. The move has come after TRAI undertook an audit of the billing systems put in place by the operators. "TRAI had been receiving complaints on billing-related matters. These complaints cover areas such as inability to verify the bills, not having clarity about the tariff scheme on which they are being billed, delay in refund, non-adjustment of credits in the bills, etc. The auditing of the billing systems of mobile operators revealed that while the billing systems being used by various operators are comparable to other systems being deployed by major international players, some of the process/ procedure being followed by the mobile operators leads to customer complaints and the attendant customer dissatisfaction," the order reads. As per the recommendations, TRAI has decided to appoint independent auditors to monitor billing systems put in place by service providers. A subscriber shall be provided with all tariff information by the service provider before being enrolled. In case of changes in charges or services, the operator shall have to get a written consent from the subscriber. Payments made by a postpaid customers shall be credited to his account within three working days of receipt of the cash or cheque. For prepaid customers, top-up credit shall be applied to a customer’s account within 15 minutes of its application. If the service provider unilaterally intends to cease service to the subscriber, a notice shall be provided in advance of such action so that he can have reasonable time to take preventive action to avoid restriction or cessation of service.
  18. There isn't any problem if you scan your PC with Antivirus software and at the same time use the PC for browsing, accessing files, etc. Even if the antivirus couldn't remove a virus because of that, it should atleast detect the virus.
  19. it is built into version 2.1.x of IPB, find the option in ACP. Since thats not the topic in discussion, you may contact me if you need any more help regarding that.
  20. Problem In R-connect Using Chetah Data Cable

Can you elaborate on what you meant by "web page expired" ? What is the exact error message that you get in the browser ? When that happens try pinging any website and check if that is working.
  21. You can see this button: below every page in the forum which on clicking will give you the RSS address of RIMweb.in Anyway, the address is: http://www.rimweb.in/forums/index.php?act=rssout&id=1 Once you add it to your news reader, it would alert you when there are new topics posted in the forum.
  22. You can go for the upgrade of the phone software because the SRCP message already indicates that the handset is 'almost dead'. The phone upgrade would most probably end before the process completes at 100%. Anyway, if the upgrade does go through and fixes the problem in phone mode for you, then you must be really lucky in that case. Please do let us know how it goes !
  23. RSS could be what you are looking for, but only new topics can be made available for RSS feeds, atleast in IPB. Just use an RSS News Reader for that.
  24. Even if you gave the right SPC lock code and proceeds, the phone upgrade won't complete as it would stop in the end part of the upgrade. There isn't any other way that I know as of now to overcome this, but to request for a replacement from Kyocera or Reliance.
  25. Happy Holi to all of U
