  1. All About Linux

Mandriva Linux, (formerly Mandrake Linux) is one of the easiest to setup in your computer as it has a fully menu driven interface for installation. Check out their Hindi website ! Regarding the "heaviness of the setup", even though Linux distributions come in 3 or more CDs, only 1 CD is required for the real installation. The other CDs contain applications, games, etc. of which you may not use all. So just download the main CD (yes, 700 MB is tough) and download applications, etc. seperately as most of them are available with GPL/Open Source license for free download. Ubuntu Linux is gaining in popularity now, for its easiness and reliability since it is built on Debian Linux. Debian is one of the most reliable Linux distribution alongside Red Hat Linux. Well, these are from my researches on the net, and not from my *actual* experiences since I'm still living in the Windoze world (sic!). One of the main drawbacks in migrating from Windows to Linux is that one will miss his/her favourite applications/softwares, even though there are alternatives to some extent in Linux. So a person who migrates from Windows to Linux will always prefer to install both as a dual boot. And thats what I'm going to do too. I'll be *getting my hands dirty* with Fedora Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (since its used in our server, I'd like to gain more experience on it) after I buy a new HDD this month end.

  16. Virus Detected When Browsing The Forum

After much investigation, we were finally able to duplicate the virus detection that some members have reported (above) by early morning today. We were working hard to resolve the issue and so the site was inaccessible during day time today for a few hours time. We were able to temporarily fix the problem and we have re-opened the forum now. I request those members who have received the virus alerts earlier, to check whether the alerts are still popping up or not when browsing (try logging in and out) through RIMweb.com now. Please post your observations here, which will help us in finding more details about the issue. We are still monitoring and doing some tests, and I'll post more information on it as soon as I receive updates from our Server Administrator in the Data Center.

  18. TIMES NEWS NETWORK - THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2005 10:05:31 AM NEW DELHI: Days before the launch of Reliance Infocomm’s overseas service in the US, a top-level Infocomm executive had warned the management that the idea of disguising overseas calls coming into India as local ones, to avoid paying charges to state-owned BSNL and MTNL, would run afoul of regulators. The documents—e-mails written to Mukesh Ambani by Akhil Gupta, then CEO Corporate Development, Reliance Infocomm—suggest that the company chose to push the limits of the law. The government has got hold of these documents and investigating agencies are now ascertaining whether this translates into criminal intent. If so, proceedings against the company could go beyond the monetary penalty imposed on it, said highly placed sources. There are two key e-mails. The first mail from Gupta, one of Mukesh’s close aides, dates back to late March last year. He virtually acted as a whistle-blower when he said in the mail, “I have reservations regarding the 12 cents per minute to all phones and not just (Reliance phones). Here is the way I see the scenario unfolding.’’ He went on to list what could happen in case Infocomm went ahead with its project. “Within seven to ten days of our commercial launch, BSNL will know. It will clearly be established that we are violating in spirit if not the law and avoiding paying ADC (access deficit charge) to BSNL or government. I will be surprised if Trai (country’s telecom regulator)\other government agencies do not move to reverse this. If we have to reverse, how do we go back to consumers? We need to create a softer image of Rel Info in NRIs’ minds.’’ The communication proved to be prescient. In October 2004, the communications ministry began investigating Infocomm’s activities, and by November BSNL and MTNL slapped penalties, asking it to pay past dues and penalties, together worth about Rs 500 crore. Early this year, Infocomm paid up. Within seven to 10 days of our commercial launch, BSNL will know It will clearly be established that we are violating in spirit if not the law. I will be surprised if Trai/ other govt agencies don’t move to reverse this As you can see from my previous e-mail, I had opposed it and put my warning in writing...It’s very painful to see us spoiling our name Gupta clashed with Mukesh aide on re-routing calls Akhil Gupta, declined to comment when contacted by TOI. When Infocomm officials were reached for their comments, they said the matter was sub-judice and involved the legal interpretation of certain services that were offered by the company but that had since been withdrawn. Coming back to Gupta’s story, his views on re-routing calls clashed with those of another trusted Mukesh Ambani aide, Manoj Modi. Ultimately, Modi’s opinion to go ahead with rerouting appears to have prevailed. Gupta seemed to have sensed that he was in a minority. Therefore, his e-mail warning Mukesh to stay clear of these practices ended with a resignation offer, “I suggest that we hand over the sponsorship (or management) of the NRI scheme to MM\BDK (Manoj Modi\B D Khurana).’’ It adds, “I have three to four weeks before we go on vacation. I would assist the new sponsors during this time.’’ However, he was persuaded to stay on. The management of the Infocomm project was divided with Modi handling regulatory and legal issues in India and Gupta handling marketing in the US. But after the call rerouting scheme came under investigation, rumours started circulating that Gupta was, in fact, the mastermind behind the scheme to disguise foreign calls. This prompted a second email from Gupta in early December, again to Mukesh, laying the entire blame for the whole botched operation on Modi. “I have heard from several sources now that MM’s office is spreading rumours that (I) was responsible for deciding to modify the caller line identification and not pay ADC. As you can see from my previous e-mail, I had opposed it and put my warning in writing,’’ he said. “I do not know what the motivations might be in the current environment,’’ wrote Gupta. He asked for Mukesh’s intervention in the bitter war of recrimination. “Would you please help in stopping this unethical nonsense from spreading and set the record straight.’’ The mail concluded, “It is very painful to see us paying huge penalties, spoiling our name and the person responsible gets to blame someone else. What a shame.’’ Following differences with the Infocomm management, Gupta recently resigned from the company.
  19. Reliance terms reports on Infocomm call re-reouting 'miseleading' New Delhi, May 19, 2005 - Press Trust of India Reliance today cried foul over reports on Akhil Gupta, a close associate of Group Chairman Mukesh Ambani, blowing the whistle on rerouting of international calls as local ones by the group's telecom entity Infocomm saying it was an attempt to mislead. "The report contains misleading facts and information. The matter is subjudice and the company does not wish to make any comment," a Reliance spokesperson said in a statement. On the other hand, Gupta, whose objection to the controversial rerouting by Reliance Infocomm went unheeded before his silent exit from the group, remained non-committal. "The matter is sub-judice.... I have no comments to offer," Gupta told PTI on phone from Mumbai in an apparent reference to the matter pending before the Delhi High Court. Asked if he had sent an e-mail warning group Chairman Mukesh Ambani way back in March last year that rerouting would tantamount to violation of spirit, if not law, Gupta refused to comment on the issue. Gupta, perceived to be a close associate of Mukesh, had quit Reliance last month after working on various projects, including Refinery, oil and gas business, and was CEO, Corporate Development of Infocomm when he put in his papers. Gupta has now joined as Senior Managing Director of Blackstone, a US-based private equity fund and advisory firm.
  20. Reliance launches "zero rental" plans with lowest call rates Automatic STD connection to all new customers DAKC (Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City), Navi Mumbai, May 18, 2005 India's largest private telecom company Reliance Infocomm today introduced two Zero Rental plans-New Joy 299 ZR and New Joy 649 ZR. The biggest benefit in these plans is that subscribers get free intra-circle calls worth the entire monthly rental making them virtually zero-rental. CLIP and Plan charges of Rs25 each apply like they do to all Joy plans of Reliance. Under the new plans, intra-circle calls to all Reliance phones cost 50 paise per minute, while those to non-Reliance phones cost Rs.1.50 per minute under New Joy 299 ZR, and Re.1 per minute under New Joy 649 ZR. "Lowest calling rates along with the option of unlimited talk time packs make these by far the best zero rental plans in the market today," said Inder Bajaj, Head - Postpaid Business, Reliance Infocomm. The company has also announced that from now on all new subscribers will automatically get STD (Subscribers Trunk Dialing) facility immediately on address verification. "The automatic activation of NLD facility is aimed at customer convenience," he added. Please continue discussions here !

  22. Clonning Illegal? Discussin It Illegal?

That topic could have been very 'creative' for many, but if those topics were not removed from the forum, then this forum simply would not have existed now as everyone knows it. Once the topic was declared as 'banned' in the forum, there is no more chance of getting the topic again from the forum as all the topics were removed. Moreover, all moderators were instructed not to encourage members to discuss about the topic anymore in the forum. If you were still able to get hold of them using your 'circuitous route', then just give a pat yourself Yes, some moderators did 'encourage' the topic when it was the hottest topic at RIMweb.com. I do regret that, but they can't be blamed for it now, as the topic was closed (banned rather) after my decision, which was prompted after I received alerts from higher authorities (as mentioned in the pinned topic at Technical Programming forum - for dacodecz if you have missed it).
  23. Incoming MMS on LG 6130

  24. Sify.com Wednesday, 23 June , 2004 The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) is set to allocate additional radio frequency to Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) based mobile operators only if the operators have a minimum subscriber base of four lakh in metro circles and between five lakh and seven lakh subscribers in non-metro areas. The policy is in line with the spectrum allocation plan followed in the case of GSM (Global System for Mobile) based cellular operators who are also given fresh radio frequency upon reaching a specified user base. CDMA-based operators are, however, not too happy with the move since the operators have not reached the prescribed subscriber limit in most circles. Reliance Infocomm would probably be the only operator to get fresh spectrum and that too, only in metro circles where it has got more than four lakh subscribers. At present, CDMA operators are given 2.5 Mhz of radio frequency. The CDMA operators have been demanding that their share should be increased to the levels of GSM-based cellular operators, which get an average of 6.2 Mhz per circle. As per the decision taken by the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) wing of the DoT, CDMA operators will be allocated radio frequency in two phases. The first phase would be released when the operators attain a subscriber base of four lakh in metros circles, seven lakh in Circle A States, 5 lakh in Circle B States, and four lakh in Circle C States. The second chunk would be released once the operators reach a subscriber base of eight lakh in metro circle, 14 lakh in Circle A States, 10 lakh in Circle B States, and eight lakh in Circle C States. DoT had set up a special committee under a Member (Technology) of the Telecom Commission for working out the details. The decision taken by the committee will be vetted by the full Telecom Commission. Meanwhile, the Association of Basic Telecom Operators has shot off a note to the Chairman, Telecom Commission, that the industry was not consulted before arriving at the spectrum allocation formula. It has also said that since the telecom regulator was also looking into spectrum related issues, the move by DoT would "amount to subverting the consultation process and making any recommendations infructuous." Tata Teleservices, the second largest CDMA operator in the country, has also written to DoT saying that the decision of the WPC was a matter of great concern.
  25. Reliance "Ownership Issues"

Reliance feud enters crucial phase Saturday, 14 May , 2005, 09:14 Bangalore: The talks for settling the Reliance family feud is expected to gather momentum with Anil Ambani slated to resume formal negotiations in this regard after May 21. Informed sources said the Ambani brothers, Mukesh and Anil, would convey their fresh perspectives on the division of Reliance group assets through K.V. Kamath, Chairman of ICICI Bank. Sources said the settlement process would move forward in the last week of the current month as the younger brother, Anil Ambani, was likely to resume talks only after May 21 for "personal reasons". This follows a significant thaw in the sibling rivalry, which reached a crescendo with the younger Ambani going public with allegations pertaining to corporate governance in Reliance Industries Ltd, the flagship group company, on April 27 even as the board met for the annual financial statement. It is learnt that a key figure in the UPA Government stepped in to warn about a possible intervention by the establishment if the feud continued to rage in the public domain. Meanwhile, Anil Ambani, through his trusted manpower, has been taking a close look at Reliance Infocomm, the group's telecom arm that was slated to go to him as per the asset division in the Kamath formula. According to the original plan, with valuation done by Nimesh Kampani, Chairman of JM Morgan Stanley, Mukesh Ambani was to retain Reliance Industries and IPCL, while Reliance Infocomm, Reliance Capital and Reliance Energy would be transferred to Anil Ambani. It is learnt that while Mukesh Amabani has had no major differences with the Kamath plan, the fact that two of the major companies that the younger Ambani inherits are cash guzzlers in the short-to-medium term queered the pitch for settlement. However, sources said, the fate of ownership of Reliance Infocomm business hung in balance as the two brothers re-start negotiations. Whether Anil Ambani will keep the business accompanied by a cash component or would push for alterations in the original Kamath formula is left to be seen.
