Looks like someone voted in the topic which caused it to be shown up in the active list. The main page list uses a third party script to show up the topics and unfortunately there isn't an option to avoid votes from being treated as an update when I checked. I changed it now when I was looking for options. Yes, this format is better I think. Nah, the new home page is a portal script from Invision Power which will have tighter integration with the forum and lot more flexible with options. The script was purchased but needs to be customized and I haven't been able to get hold of a designer yet who knows the script inside out to customize it.

It must be due to the network in your area, probably congestion or less signal. I get 1500 kbps+ most of the time.

Is that including shipping to India?

Virgin Mobile Is Here For The Youth, Courtesy Tata
Arun posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
The Hindu Business Line Monday, November 19, 2007 (New Delhi) Britain's Virgin group will soon enter India's mobile phone market and make animated films, even as it awaits government nod to fly the domestic aviation space, its founder Sir Richard Branson said. The UK-based Virgin Group is to make an announcement about its telecommunication venture in India within the next two-and-a-half months and would also like to set up a domestic airline, its founder, Sir Richard Branson said on Monday. “I love coming to India and will be back in two-and-a-half months; so I will save that announcement for then and not jeopardise my trip,” he said, when asked whom the tie-up would be with. While Sir Richard refused to divulge details of the telecommunication venture, Virgin Mobiles is likely to tie up with Tata Teleservices. Speaking about his interest in the Indian mobile phone space, Branson said his group had already applied for relevant permission to enter the market. "Give me two-and-a-half months to talk about that," he said. "It will not be long before we enter the mobile phone business in India," he said, adding, "We have a partner now." The Indian mobile market is the second biggest in the world after China, with six to eight million subscribers being added to the network each month. The Virgin Group currently offers mobile services as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in six countries, including the US, the UK and South Africa. An MVNO does not have its own network and offers services through the network of other service provider. Virgin Mobile UK was the world's MVNO when it launched in 1999. -
Updated Reliance Netconnect+ Prepaid and PostPaid Plans
Arun replied to Arun's topic in Data services
I suppose there will be a difference in the browsing experience on EVDO limited to 150 kbps and on 1x with technical maximum of 144 kbps. The connectivity over EVDO will be more steady. -

Fundraiser for MEID Registration and EVDO Activation on Reliance CDMA
Arun posted a topic in The Lounge
As most of you are aware by now MEID Registration and EVDO Activation on Reliance CDMA is a reality now thanks to efforts from members like HetalDP, Sadikk, etc. This will allow foreign CDMA handsets to be activated legally and use on Reliance Mobile CDMA network with EVDO. We never know if Reliance may force A-Key authentication which can affect foreign CDMA Handsets configured by changing ESN in the past; and changing handsets or selling to someone is a hassle too - so MEID registration is the way to go for complete peace of mind and you get the oppurtunity to have EVDO as well. Without doubt this is a major achievement for everyone for which we have been waiting for several years. In order to cover the costs incurred till now for everyone involved in making it a dream come true and for future software development we need to help them financially even though they are not forcing for it. So we have decided to raise funds (instead of seeking random donation) by uniformly charging the following amounts for members who would like to take advantage of MEID registration and/or EVDO activation: MEID Registration + EVDO Activation = 1000 MEID Registration only = 500 EVDO Activation only (if your MEID is already registered) = 750 This will benefit everyone as both the developers and the members will be able to support each other instead of having just a few members to bear the costs involved. I request everyone to help raise the funds for something we have been eagerly waiting for. Here are some FAQs which I presume will be asked by some members: Does it really cost that much for MEID Registration/EVDO Activation process? No, it will not cost that much. The major part of the charge will be spent for covering the costs incurred till now and for future software development. How do I get my MEID registered and activate EVDO for my MDN? Go here and read the instructions in the first post. How do I make the payment for the fundraiser? We will try to give you as many options as possible like Bank A/C Transfer, Credit Card, PayPal, etc. Please mention your preferred mode of payment when you send the email and the details will be given in the reply. I have already sent the email earlier? You will be informed about the payment details in the reply email. How do I configure my new foreign handset after MEID is registered and for EVDO activation? New topics with configuration instructions will be coming up in the Technical/Programming forum in the coming days along with other related FAQs. What are the softwares being developed? Currently the process for configuring the handset after MEID/EVDO registration/activation has to be done manually which can be bit difficult for the technically challenged. A new software that can configure A-Key, MDN, PPP and HDR UID & password with EVDO settings which is dump compatible for CDMA Workshop 2.7 is being planned. The software is also expected to load Reliance NAM settings like Channel/MNC/MCC/SID/NID and have device specific support as well. This software is only planned and not easy to develop since it involves CDMA programming and can take time as well. Since we do not know if it would be possible for sure; for configuring the handsets new topics with instructions to do that will come up in the Technical/Programming forum or by email one-on-one. Will I get refund if the software development is unsuccessful? No, we are not commited to provide the software based on the funds raised as that is not the main purpose of the fundraiser. Recovering the money spent till now is the first priority. If we get enough funds then we will go ahead to develop the software to write HDR and other parameters in the handset. Manual configuration support will be provided anyway as indicated earlier. I have sent the details by email few days ago but I haven't received any response yet? I will keep an eye on the whole process though I am not directly involved in it. Sadikk will be posting the updates in this topic. Where do I find the Bank payment details? See the attachment in this post- 59 replies

MTS Launches Android Phone MTS Pulse
Arun replied to rajanmehta's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
MTS plans 'monsoon hungama 2' DNA India March 15, 2011 It was eight years ago that Mukesh Ambani, a man known for taking big risks, announced a unique scheme that gave away mobile phones costing a few thousand rupees for just Rs500. While the financially unsuccessful scheme put a quick end to Indian operators’ attempts to ape Western markets by bundling handsets free with each connection, Russian operator MTS on Tuesday announced it wants to have a second go. “We are a long way since Reliance introduced Monsoon Hungama,” says Vsevolod Rozanov, president and CEO of Sistema Shyam, the company that owns the MTS brand in India. Unlike Reliance, which offered the phones for a down-payment of Rs500, MTS will offer a Rs16,000, high-end HTC handset for free, and hope to recover it from the customer’s bill for the next 12 months. In return for taking the handset for free, the customer has to commit to a minimum bill-size of Rs1,500, including SMS, calls and Data. Unlike ‘Hungama’, there will be no separate handset rentals or charges, making the handset ‘free’ for heavy users. Most analysts, however, were sceptical of the scheme, primarily because of the difficultly of keeping the customer paying through the 12 months. “If you play really safe and target the scheme only at very well off customers, such customers are anyway used to having very clear cut preferences, favorite models etc.. They may not want to pick from one or two or three models offered under a scheme,” pointed out a Delhi-based telecom analyst. If on the other hand, the company tries to target the mid or mass market - the segment that really needs the scheme - it will come up against issues of credit-worthiness etc., the analyst, who preferred to remain anonymous, added. Such schemes only work in markets like the US which have strong credit-tracking infrastructure that discourages customers from dishonoring their subscription contracts. Others, however, were willing to wait and see. “It is certainly an interesting move,” said Deepak Kumar of IDC. “Whether the company pushes ahead with the scheme or not would depend on the initial success or failure,” he added. Indeed, MTS says it has an open mind about whether the scheme will work or not. “There is a reason why we are starting at the high-end.. If it works here, we will progressively address the mid-range market as well,” said Leonid Musatov, chief marketing officer for India. The sweet-spot for smart phones in India is around Rs10,000 and the company would launch other models, including those from Motorola, Micromax and Samsung, if the first scheme takes off. Musatov also said MTS would be interested in bidding for extra spectrum to strengthen its data-oriented service in India, particularly in the Wimax-LTE band. The company currently has just 5 MHz of spectrum, out of which it used 2.5 MHz for voice and the rest for data. In comparison, some GSM operators have as much as 50 MHz of spectrum between their voice, 3G and broadband licenses. Reliance Industries has 20 MHz of spectrum. Musatov, whose firm has been pushing for the easing of merger and acquisition rules in telecom, said MTS is not interested in acquiring GSM spectrum or operators, but is interested in wireless broadband as it has decided to focus on data for its growth. -

It was locked when you purchased it but you have got it unlocked for GSM by someone, right? BIS should work fine if it was unlocked. Have you checked by inserting the SIM in another BlackBerry device to verify if BIS is working? The Vodafone store should help you out to check that.
-
If GSM is unlocked any provider BIS should work
-
I have seen it happen on the default BlackBerry browser as well. BlackBerry does compression and data filtering through their BIS/BES servers which is like a proxy. So the test result might be showing the speed between the testing server and the BIS/BES server. dslreports.com mobile speed test shows the following reason for incompatibility with BlackBerry:

Times of India January 24, 2011, 12.52 PM IST After announcing that it would launch 3G services in January 2011, Airtel on Monday said it was launching 3G in Karnataka to begin with. The company said it was now targeting a rollout of 3G services across the rest of its 13 3G licence circles by March, thereby acknowledging it was running behind on the rollout. Rival Vodafone too is unlikely to launch its 3G services before middle of February. Announcing this, Sanjay Kapoor, CEO - Bharti airtel Ltd (India & South Asia) said, "It is indeed the start of a new era when 3G services in India roll out on Airtel's network. World over 'Data traffic' on the back of high speed internet and use of social networking has already exceeded the 'Voice traffic'. India is ushering in the domain -- though later than most of the world -- but no doubt we will catch up at a much faster speed." Airtel's 3G services, delivered on high speed HSPA network, will bring in a new era of enriching services in entertainment, utility, commerce and health -- all now on the customer's mobile phone. The Airtel internet on 3G will let users enjoy multimedia services, high speed mobile broadband and internet access with the ability to view videos on mobile phone, make video calls, watch live TV, access high speed internet and enjoy live streaming. With the mobile industry across the world expecting to connect 2.4 billion people to the internet over the next five years, the launch of its 3G services is seen as a key milestone in Bharti Airtel's vision to play a leading role in delivering the power of the mobile internet to an increasing number of people in India. The company will offer time-based plans for light users of data, where usage and billing will be charged by hour, while offering flexi-shield plans for heavy users of data (where usage and billing will be capped), it said.
