  1. Doubt About 3G

3G isn't only about browsing internet on your mobile and/or PC. Services like video calls (using which you can see each other and talk), mobile TV (where you can watch TV programs including Live programming) etc. will work over 3G data. The scope of these services will vary depending upon the applications available as anything is possible. Yes, you need a high end smart phone to utilize them. Voice calls won't have much difference in clarity but there could be lesser congestion as more spectrum is available for the operator.
  2. Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 21:35 CNBC-TV18 The Anil Ambani group will have a new identity. The group will drop the ADAG tag and will be known as just the RELIANCE group, reports CNBC-TV18’s Siddharth Zarabi. Clearly this is a re-branding that has happened. Almost five years after Reliance ADAG was born as a separate group. It comes several months after the rapprochement and the peace between the two groups. If you look at it the fact remains that the name of the company the group does not change. The master websites still carries The Anil Ambani Dhirubhai Group mention. But what is crucial to note here is that the branding for all the services and remember Reliance ADAG as a group now works in seven sectors with almost 27 businesses and most of these are consumer facing businesses. About 250 million people are being contacted by some Reliance business or the other almost on a daily basis. So Reliance Communications for instance the service will only be sold as Reliance, and similarly a product from Reliance Capital or Reliance Entertainment. If you look at the website which we have looked at extensively barring the master website everything else is RELIANCE and it says Reliance Capital or Reliance and it says Reliance Entertainment. Sanjay Behl, who is the head of brand and marketing at the group, explained that from hereon the ADAG group’s identity remains but it will not be the master brand in any manner. It will be RELIANCE. The difference with the other Reliance, the Reliance of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries – if you look at it is that while Reliance is written in lower case the ADAG RELIANCE at this stage is full caps. There are some changes, it is blue, there is now a triangle, the lines have been taken off. So clearly the larger sense that one gets from it is that some sort of commonality is being achieved between the two brands. Although when I asked Behl this could cause conflict, he made the point that Reliance Industries is a B2B business. It generally works with business consumers and not retail customers. Therefore there would be no confusion. But finally I think it is a big change that has happened. It is being done over the last several months it has been carried out. From here forth all the Reliance services will only be sold under the Reliance name the ADAG name will remain, the promoter remains but it will perhaps be a sub text in all the branding from hereon.
  3. Reliance Communications rings on likely approval for video call service IndiaInfoline Dec 31, 2010 Reliance Communications jumped 3.15% at Rs 142.55 at 9:42 IST on BSE on reports the company can restart providing video calls in the new year as part of its 3G services. The government has reportedly approved telecom operators' video calls facility after operators gave an undertaking that within the next six months, they would start providing real-time interception of video calls. According to reports, a tripartite agreement is being drafted between the security agencies, telecom industry associations and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that real-time monitoring of such calls will be available in the next six months failing which such calls will be barred. Video calls are interactive calls where the callers can view each another on mobile phones or computer displays. While the immediate beneficiaries will be Reliance Communications (RCom) and unlisted Tata Teleservices who have already launched 3G services, others like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Essar and Idea Cellular, all of whom plan to roll out such services shortly, will also gain.
  4. Anil Ambani Firms Stock Price Rise on Reconciliation Speculation Bloomberg - Business Week December 31, 2010, 2:11 AM EST Anil Ambani group companies rose in Mumbai after the billionaire’s decision to remove his name from corporate branding stoked speculation he may forge closer ties with brother Mukesh, investors such as Jayesh Shroff said. “It’s possible the market is reading the new branding as a reconciliation between the brothers,” said Shroff, who manages $1.4 billion in equities at SBI Funds Management Pvt. in Mumbai. Reliance Communications Ltd., Anil’s flagship company and India’s second-largest mobile phone provider, gained as much as 4.7 percent, the biggest intraday gain in a week, to 144.90 rupees and changed hands up 4.1 percent at 11:35 a.m. Gaurav Wahi, a spokesman for Reliance Communications, didn’t answer a call made to his mobile phone. Manoj Warrier, a spokesman for Reliance Industries, denied the company was planning to buy Anil Ambani-owned companies. Tony Jesudasan, a spokesman for the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, didn’t immediately respond to a text message and a call made to his mobile phone.
  5. Both Vodafone and AirTel has similar plans on prepaid but TATA Docomo has gone one notch up by offering it on prepaid and postpaid and also the first 300 MB on 3G
  6. Does that mean the first 300 MB can be done over 3G and after 300 MB it will be 2G speed?
  7. 3G Speed Difference

The speed result may vary depending on the test server but that is too much of a difference. Are you testing it directly from the mobile or through PC?
  8. WiFi network with Broadband USB Modem

It can't be configured as a wifi router, but if you have Windows 7 then you can turn your PC/latop into a wifi hotspot:

  17. No, the photograph is from the test done by Reliance employees at the India Telecom 2010 in New Delhi
  18. Does Google Really Worry About Our Privacy?

It is a worry for people in countries like US because they are most concerned about privacy than anything else. I don't think that is the case in India as most people here would not mind the privacy part over the "freebies" offered by Google. After all the Indian government isn't going to use Google's data for profiling like CIA does as reported in the video.
  19. Yup, though baggage of a person coming from US
  20. Nope, it was ordered during the first week of November

  23. Just got the ASUS UL30VT-A1 13.3" laptop which I have imported from US as this specific model is not available in India. Importing it from US wasn't going to be easy, but thanks to a client of mine in US and kshah (& Sadikk) it reached here without having to pay any duty fee. The ASUS UnLimited (UL) Series boasts for its 12 hour battery life performance which is dubbed as "all-day computing". I have gone for this model specifically for that reason, so that I can stay online for at least for 8 hours when on the move and no access to a power outlet. It achieves the maximum battery life when the settings are changed to the minimum configuration like on-board graphics instead of the Nvidia GeForce G 210M 512 MB graphics card, power saving settings, etc. We can switch the graphics card (between on-board and dedicated) without having to restart the laptop while the "Turbo33" technology (where you can easily overclock the CPU for extra performance) will need restart. Turning them off will help with the battery life. With a 1.3 GHz processor (which is just 300 MHz more than my Droid Incredible!) I wasn't sure if the performance would be good enough. However the Core 2 Duo CULV Processor does extremely well in terms of performance along with the 4 GB DDR3 RAM. It is this processor that helps achieve the high battery life it claims, so one can't expect a Intel Core i series processor here. For the hardware parts, it includes a 500 GB (5400 rpm) hard drive, integrated bluetooth, 802.11n Wi-Fi, 3 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI port, VGA port, SD Card reader, RJ45 LAN port, chiclet style keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, Altec Lansing speakers, 0.3 megapixel webcam, etc. It isn't too heavy nor too light, but very compact at 1 inch thick. It comes pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I noticed there were a lot of pre-installed softwares including non Asus ones. I removed most of the non-Asus software and left some Asus softwares which are pretty cool like FastBoot, Fancy Start, etc. It also has a virtual OS that allows you to access web browser, instant messengers, etc. instantly (within 5 seconds after pressing the dedicated button) without having to boot into the operating system! It is powered by "Splashtop Instant-On Desktop from DeviceVM" and is called "Express Gate" by ASUS. I have checked the battery life for the first conditioning (full charge and discharge) and it did give around 12 hours battery life. With WiFi ON and normal usage I would expect at least 8 hours from what I see till now. Things I don't like in the laptop is the hard-to-press trackpad button which is stiffer than the soft trackpad button in my Dell Inspiron and the lack of hardware volume control keys on the outside which my old Dell Inspiron has. On the bright side it doesn't get uncomfortably hot as my Dell Inspiron does when using on "lap". This specific model was launched in January 2010 and was replaced with a newer model (ASUS UL30VT-X1K) by now. The pricing for this laptop was the sweet spot of the deal which I got from B&H store here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/671904-REG/ASUS_UL30VT_A1_UL30Vt_A1_13_3_Notebook_Computer.html - It was for $699 with a FREE 320 GB Leather External Hard Disk Drive which can work via USB or eSATA without external power. As you can see in the page above it is listed "Discontinued" now and they discontinued it a couple of days after I purchased it! I haven't seen that price tag of $699 elsewhere as most other stores like Amazon offer it for $750 - $850. Anyway this laptop would cost a LOT more if it was launched in India. Oh, and it also comes with a 2 year limited global/international warranty from ASUS! Thanks to Anupe for recommending me this laptop which has turned out to be a really good one for me, after all it had many good reviews on most websites.
