  2. Reliance Industries to opt for LTE over WiMax Financial Express - Aug 23, 2010 at 0317 hrs IST Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), which through Infotel Broadband is the only operator to have won spectrum for providing broadband wireless access (BWA) services in all the 22 circles, has decided to use the long-term evolution (LTE) technology as opposed to the other competing alternative, WiMAX. While the LTE technology is backed by the San Diego-based chip maker Qualcomm, WiMAX technology has the backing of the chipmaker Intel. RIL’s veering towards LTE technology would come as a big blow to the rival WiMAX platform since it is the largest BWA operator in the country and its choice of technology would certainly have a bearing on the choice other operators make. Bharti Airtel, which has won BWA spectrum in four circles is still to decide on technology. Sources said the main reason for RIL to throw its weight behind LTE technology is its old relations with Qualcomm. RIL had opted for Qualcomm’s CDMA technology when it had rolled out its mobile telephony in late 2002 through Reliance Infocomm. In fact, at that time, there was an understanding between the two that Qualcomm would pick up a minority stake in Infocomm, which later did not materialize. The other reason cited by officials close to the decision is that by choosing LTE, Mukesh Ambani-led RIL can use the CDMA network of younger brother Anil’s Reliance Communications (Rcomm). When contacted, an RIL spokesperson declined comment. Qualcomm, which has itself won spectrum in four circles—Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala—has since then offloaded 26% stake to Tulip Telecom and Global Holding Corporation Pvt Ltd. However, this also means that it would be sometime before RIL commences its BWA services since LTE is expected to be fully ready only by next year while WiMAX has been in place from the last five years. Though the government has already allocated spectrum for BWA and is still to do so for 3G services, operators are expected to roll out 3G services earlier than BWA because most of them are undecided on the choice of technology so far. Only the state-owned BSNL and MTNL have so far started deploying WiMAX for their BWA services. Broadband offers huge opportunities in the country as there are only meager 9 million subscribers to this service as on date, which means a penetration level of just 1%. In fact, shortly after acquiring 95% stake in Infotel after winning BWA spectrum, RIL said in an analyst presentation that the data.

  4. Government wants BlackBerry server installed in India Press Trust of India - August 22, 2010 The government has conveyed to the BlackBerry makers to install its server in India for tracking its messenger and enterprise mail service as the offer made by the company to provide data from its Canada-based server could be detrimental to national security. Officials of BlackBerry maker RIM (Research In Motion) had offered to provide information on a deferred basis after it faced the threat of a shutdown of the core features by August 31 if security agencies cannot gain access to heavily encrypted corporate email sent on a Blackberry handset. RIM had provided an option to the security agencies and officials of the Home Ministry that they could hand over the details of BlackBerry phones needed to be monitored and the firm in turn will decrypt the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Enterprise mail Service (BES) of the smart phones in question, sources in the Telecom Ministry said. RIM officials were ready to provide the information initially manually and later through a non-human interface using the “cloud computing environment” method under which a separate wall created in the server and code and pass-code is handed over to the overall coordinator, in this case India, the sources said. However, the proposal was rejected prima facie as security agencies claimed that handing over telephone numbers for monitoring was fraught with the danger of exposing the source to an outside company and thus can be detrimental to country’s security, the sources said. Even the automated system of extracting information from Canada-based server was not free of danger because the information could be hacked midway, the sources said. The sources said that RIM officials were conveyed in no uncertain terms that they should deploy their interception server in India with the Indian Service Provider having a definitive tracking system. Taking serious exception to BlackBerry’s inability to provide a solution to BES, the Home Ministry again wrote to the Telecom Ministry that if the RIM officials in collaboration with the service providers do not come up with a solution to BES, the service should be stopped immediately. The BES is a technology of the BlackBerry where by a close user group within a few individuals is created and no mails sent from their smart phones to each other can be intercepted, the sources said. Earlier the BlackBerry, which has over one million connections in India, had come up with a proposal of under which a mobile number that needed to be monitored would to be handed over to the RIM who in turn will provide the information within a maximum of 10 days. However, the security agencies insisted on real time information rather than a deferred one in the interest of national security. The BlackBerry makers are racing against time to meet the August 31 deadline set by the government earlier this month to provide a solution for intercepting the BBM and BES or see the prospect of the mobile phone’s popular services being shut down in the country. The government is firm that any proposal of RIM would be accepted only after security agencies are satisfied with the technology of interception.
  5. In Kerala I noticed coverage in newer towns like Quilon and Palakkad when I was traveling in train. They will have lot more cities covered by the year end when 3G (GSM) service starts. See: The coverage map here is well updated: http://www.reliancenetconnect.co.in/coverage%20maps.html
  6. Reliance Communications to use EVDO-3G combo for pan-India presence CIOL - Friday, August 20, 2010 Reliance Communication (RCOM) who has won 3G spectrum waves in 13 circles will use EVDO service of its CDMA network to facilitate pan-India 3G service to its customer. “3G users are initially going to be in metro circles and in all three metro circles we have won the bid. For services in other circles, we have mobile broadband plus in our CDMA network, which we will use for facilitating 3G experience to our client across country. At the same time we are looking at other opportunities in market,” said Mahesh Prasad, president, Reliance Communications in a brief interaction with CIOL at the sidelines of announcing collaboration with Nokia. RCOM has won 3G spectrum in 13 circles for Rs 8585.04 crore. The company has pan- India license for CDMA and GSM service. Prasad added that if spectrum is allocated to the company as per government on 1st September then RCOM will launch 3G services by the end of this year or early next year. “We need to upgrade our network which will take time. For this year we have already marked capex expansion of Rs 3000 crore,” said Prasad. He sees no repercussions of security concern in the launch of 3G services. “Security norms have to be met. We don’t see any reason that will delay launch of 3G services. Security norms are there for 2G services as well, which all operators have to meet,” noted Prasad. Recently Ministry of Home Affairs has raised concern of video call service being provided by BSNL and MTNL. MHA has also asked Department of Telecom to allow 3G service only if proper interception mechanism is in place. As per DoT sources, MHA has asked MTNL and BSNL to install video call decoder on their end as well as provide same for security agencies to which both the companies have agreed. These decoders will be installed for live monitoring by security agencies at the expense of telecom service provider. Prasad also said that RCOM will have no problem in complying with directions that will be given to the company by the government and will install decoder for security agencies if asked to do so. “We will do it. There are no issues. We will comply with whatever government says. Security need should be met,” said Prasad.

It has also appointed Prashant Gokarn as head of its 3G business. Gokarn would report to Syed Safawi, president and CEO of its wireless business, according to people close to the development. Prior to this, he was heading corporate strategy in RCom. Gokarn will also be a key member of RCom’s wireless management board. Jayaraju will report to Gokarn. The company also plans to set up a fully-integrated 3G innovation lab, with end-to-end wireless network infrastructure. 15. I think prepaid EVDO is not yet launched in BSNL Kerala, at least not in Trivandrum. BSNL CDMA coverage is fine and EVDO coverage is expanding. However EVDO Rev.A is still not fully launched; it is Rev.0 in Trivandrum as of now.
  16. There is one thing that prepaid users will miss though and that would be customer support. There isn't any customer support for Vodafone prepaid blackberry service.
  17. Choice Number

Yes, go for postpaid, get the number changed and then convert to prepaid
  18. BIRTHDAY WISHES!

Thanks a lot for your wishes ::Hitesh::, vijaymalhotra_2007, Greatest, aalok, Dr.Gagan, vikasmahajanz and Honest!
  19. It isn't a hardware limitation but EVDO needs additional parameters that can be done through Reliance's end only; they won't even allow the connection to be activated through their side. If you need to use EVDO with Reliance then you need to buy the handset from Reliance. If you have someone to do "it" for you then its fine, else find a deal in the Buy/Sell forum and buy handset from the seller.
  20. No, you will be able to use 1x only for data (max 144 kbps) and not EVDO/NetConnect Broadband+ All others features and upgrade (manually) will work. I would suggest you to go through the Buy-Sell forum and look for offers on it by other sellers as you can't get it activated through Reliance if you import it directly.
  21. Grey Wins $80 Million Account for 3G Introduction in India with Reliance Communications Mumbai - AdAge.com 08.12.10 @ 07:34 AM In India, where cellphones rather than computers are the gateway to the internet for consumers, the introduction of faster third-generation (3G) service is expected to lead to an explosion in mobile marketing and subscriber revenue. The 3G marketing blitz will be led by Reliance Communications, India's second-largest mobile phone operator. Reliance won licenses in an auction earlier this year against rivals Vodafone Essar and Bharti Airtel to offer 3G services in 13 key areas of India, including major cities such as Mumbai and Delhi, and plans to introduce the faster service in late 2010 or early 2011. In the biggest pitch so far this year in India, Reliance just awarded the new 3G advertising account, estimated at up to $80 million, to Grey Group. "The mobile advertising landscape, still in a nascent stage in India, is bound to change dramatically," said Sudhir Nair, VP of Grey's G2 direct and digital business for South Asia in Mumbai. "If the popularity of social networking and associated content is any indication of the internet space in India, 3G, with its additional bandwidth, will trigger a similar phenomenon in the mobile space." Reliance's first ads are likely to break by the end of September, a Grey executive said. Previously, local agency Cartwheel handled creative for RCom's basic GSM mobile services, while DDB Mudra oversaw ads for its Netconnect broadband wireless business. Industry sources said both incumbents took part, along with JWT and McCann Erickson. In a separate pitch, Reliance split its media business between OMD and MEC. Mr. Nair said he believes ad budgets in India will rise by as much as 25% following the arrival of 3G in India. "It could also serve to kick-start innovation with specialized content, adver-gaming, social networking, m-commerce, communities and a host of other initiatives finding quick relevance."
  22. Government gives BlackBerry August 31 deadline ibnlive.com Posted on Aug 12, 2010 at 17:58 The government has given Research in Motion and mobile service providers an August 31 deadline to come up with technical solutions to assuage India's security concerns over BlackBerry services. Earlier, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion skipped a crucial meeting with the government. Vodafone and Airtel were also absent at the meeting. The mobile service providers say that they were not invited to the meeting. The meeting, called to discuss India's security concerns over BlackBerry's encrypted messaging service, was supposed to last for 45 minutes, but ended in only 15 minutes. Officials from the Intelligence Bureau, National Technical Research Organisation, BSNL and Department of Telecommunications and the Home Ministry attended the meeting. Home Ministry officials said the meeting remained inconclusive. While RIM was not present at the meeting, RIM Vice President Robert E Crow met the Home Minister P Chidambaram to discuss the BlackBerry deadlock. The government will review the situation after August 31 and decide on restricting BlackBerry's messenger and enterprise email services. If a shutdown takes effect, BlackBerry users in India would only be able to use the devices for phone calls and Internet browsing. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone are the largest providers of BlackBerry services in India. India, recently a growing market for RIM, fears the BlackBerry could provide cover for subversive activities. In 2008, a Pakistani-based terrorist group used mobile and satellite phones to coordinate attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people. While national security is India's main concern, Middle Eastern countries are concerned that BlackBerry users may spread pornography or violate restrictions on contact between unrelated men and women.
