@doc_anurag: No, its working fine for me and I did not make any change. The only gripe is the "Error Code 67. Registration failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect." message which shows up after disconnecting a data session, which can be dismissed. @dkaile ah i c, I used MyBackup Pro v2.3.5 One issue that I have noticed is that the SMS delivery status shown in the SMS sent is incorrect. It is showing the status as "Unsuccessful" for every SMS even though it was delivered. Can anyone who updated to 2.1 check this after sending an SMS? It is showing like that on both the default Messages application and on Handcent SMS. For those who asked about Bluetooth, I was able to transfer files to and from (with a Nokia N82) using Bluetooth without any issue. For those who asked about the performance after upgrade, yes there is a lag seen when you run more applications at a time, otherwise you won't see much of a difference. Overall the upgrade to 2.1 is good.

Correct, I did not have to make any changes for the data I am stilling configuring applications and restoring call logs, SMS, contacts, etc. at the moment.

Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding
Arun posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Press Trust of India November 12, 2007 18:47 IST Steering India towards a new level of wireless telephony, the government on Monday announced immediate release of spectrum for 'third generation' (3G) mobile services and allowed users to switch operators while retaining the cell phone numbers. "The government has decided to release 3G spectrum in 2.1 ghz band with immediate effect," Communications Minister A Raja said. Number portability, which would allow users to change their service provider while keeping the numbers unchanged, will be introduced in the four metropolitan cities at the earliest. The department of telecommunications secretary D S Mathur said about 30 mhz spectrum can be released to accommodate three players in the first phase. Asked whether only existing 2G players will be allowed to offer 3G services, Raja said: "No, I want healthy competition, I want all the players to bid for it. As far as foreign players are concerned, they will be allowed subject to security clearances by Ministry of Home Affairs." "The 3G licences will be granted through a controlled, simultaneous ascending e-auction, by a specialised agency to ensure transparency in selection process," the minister said. 3G services will give users a better multimedia experience, with faster data transfer rates. At present, cellular operators offer only 2G services. Raja ruled out mergers among 3G operators during the first five years, and also said that trading and reselling of spectrum will not be allowed. Although he did not give any time frame for introduction of number portability, Raja said he will try to implement it in the four metros by this year-end. A meeting will be held with existing operators to see their cooperation. On 3G spectrum, he said besides the initial one-time charge, it has been decided that the successful bidder will pay additional spectrum charge of 0.5 per cent of the total adjusted gross revenue as recurring annual fee. This additional revenue share is proposed to be doubled to one per cent of AGR after 3 years from the date of spectrum assignment. DoT to introduce number portablility in metros Business Standard / New Delhi November 12, 2007 In a major bonanza for over 3.75 crore mobile customers in the country’s four metros, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) today announced the introduction of 'number portability' in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The facility will be available to mobile customers by the fourth quarter of 2008. Under this system, subscribers do not have to change their mobile numbers even if they shift from one operator to another operator. Communications Minister A Raja, who announced the decision, said while portability could not be implemented on a nationwide basis immediately, DoT has decided to initially implement it in the four metros (which constitutes 18.29% of the total mobile subscriber base in the country). Industry estimates that operators have to fork out around Rs 180-200 crore in order to make portabality operational (it was estimated that portability across India would cost the industry over Rs 823 crore) in the metros. The DoT announcement comes nearly twenty months after Telecom Regulatory Authority of India(Trai) had recommended a phase-wise introduction of number portability across the country. It had also mandated that number portability in a limited way should be rolled out by April 2007. Opposition from GSM players as well as state-owned telecom companies had delayed the process. Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) secretary general T V Ramachandran, while welcoming the move, is skeptical and says: "Why is portability being announced only for mobile and not for fixed line and that also only in cities where connectivity is not a problem unlike other cities? We are concerned at these half measures." Industry experts say that number portability is expected to increase the overall churn in the industry, especially for the top operators in each circle."The average churn in the industry is around 3-4% but with portability it would go up to 8-10% at least in the first few months. It is bound to impact incumbent operators who will lose some of their high paying customers" an analyst said. PTI adds: Raja, while announcing the policy for releasing 3G spectrum, said only three players are being permitted in the first phase of 3G services. Existing as well as new players would be allowed to offer 3G services. Foreign players can be allowed to offer 3G services subject to security clearance, Raja said. -

Mar 24, 2010 PC World Sprint HTC EVO 4G After months of rumors, Sprint and HTC's Android 4G smartphone is finally here. The HTC EVO 4G (originally codenamed "Supersonic") sports a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen with multitouch and runs HTC's updated Sense user interface over Android 2.1 mobile OS. With such a large display, the EVO is ideal for watching video. Not only does it support a wide array of video codecs, it also has HDMI output and comes with a kickstand for hands-free video watching. The EVO 4G also ships with an 8-megapixel camera with "HD-capable" video capture. Unsurprisingly, its powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, also seen on the HTC-built Nexus One. Like the HTC Legend, Desire and HD2 Mini, the EVO 4G runs the revamped Sense interface. Launched at Mobile World Congress, the new Sense UI offers some useful new functions for easy navigation including a new feature called Leap. Essentially, Leap is an elegant way of handling multitasking; it's actually a bit reminiscent of Palm's webOS deck of cards visualization. Pinch anywhere on the homescreen, and you'll jump to seven thumbnail versions of your open pages. From there, you can go to any of those open applications or close out of one. Another new feature in a new widget called Friend Stream. It allows you to view your friends' status updates, shared links, and pictures all in one seamless view. Sprint says its 4G network delivers peak download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. While Sprint has been talking about its WiMAX service (via the Clearwire network) for a few years now, we haven't seen very many WiMAX-enabled devices outside of laptop cards and modems. At CES, Sprint announced the Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot that will work with WiMAX networks, where available. The EVO 4G is coming this summer to Sprint, but pricing has not yet been announced. Check back soon for a closer look and hands-on review of the HTC EVO 4G.

3G Auctions Go On and On, But What Were You Expecting? Wall Street Journal - May 13, 2010, 12:21 PM IST India’s bandwidth auction for third-generation mobile services have been dragging on for more than a month. The end may be near, experts say, as bids for single slots of coverage have crossed the $3 billion mark. To 3G-auction watchers, however, the lengthy bidding process hasn’t come as a surprise. Similar auctions in the United Kingdom at the start of the decade lasted more than a month and a half, and New Zealand’s lasted about 18 months, though the Kiwis were auctioning different sets and phases of licenses and bandwidth. Indian telecommunications service providers are hoping that the similarities end there. In the U.K., bidding was also aggressive, with one slot going for about $6 billion, and operators faced unexpectedly high debt that delayed the launch of commercial 3G services. The technology was called a failure, and some say that British carriers are still paying the price. “If the auction stops in the next one or two days, then it will not result in operators getting into a debt trap, though profits may be hit,” said Prashant Singhal, head of Ernst & Young India’s telecom practice. If bids go well above 150 billion rupees (US$3.33 billion), “it would be detrimental to the industry,” he added. All eyes are hence on the end game. Will it turn out to be a winner’s curse? 3G Auction update until May 12, 2010 -
If you are sure that the tower is half a kilometre away then you should be getting up to 2 mbps. Have you tried checking outdoors (hoping you have a laptop)?

IP.Board v3.1 is current on Beta 1 (released earlier this week). The time for final release will vary depending on the bugs discovered and the time to fix them in the beta releases (probably 4 beta releases and then a pre-final release which the usual development cycle).

Undersea Cable System Repair Hit Internet Service In India
Arun posted a topic in Other Broadband Discussion
Couple of members messaged me and said the forum pages were loading slow yesterday and both were using AirTel and I could see the high latency in the trace route. This is due to the repair activity for the recent undersea cable cut in the SEA-ME-WE4 network system. The cut actually happened on April 14th and was affecting internet traffic in the Middle East mostly. They have started repaid work from Sunday and may continue till April 30. During this time higher latency (slow browsing) will be affecting customers of ISPs like TATA Communications and AirTel. 25 Apr 2010, 1423 hrs IST Press Trust of India The disruption in the SEA-ME-WE 4 undersea submarine cable system, which links South East Asia and Europe, is likely to affect the high-speed Internet services in the country. The South East Asia-Middle East-West Europe 4 (SEA-ME-WE 4) project links the two regions via the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East. The project is run by a consortium of 16 international telecom companies, including Indian majors Bharti Airtel and Tata Communications. According to sources, the disruption in the undersea cable network near Italy is likely to hit the broadband connections in India. Maintenance of the undersea cables will be carried out for the next four days, which may cause some disruption in services. However, the companies have taken various steps to minimize the impact, sources said. Going by the project's official website, the undersea cable system has terminal stations in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria and France. -
