  3. Telcos want users to bear number portability cost 8 Aug 2009, 0049 hrs IST Economic Times In a move that could make it significantly costlier for mobile users to change their operator while retaining the number, GSM operators have demanded that subscribers be made to bear the cost of the network upgrade required to usher in number portability. State-owned telco BSNL has told telecom regulator Trai that upgrading networks to allow MNP would cost the company about Rs 1,200 crore, and only 2% of the elite customers were likely to use this facility. Going by BSNL's formula, back of the envelope calculations show that it will cost about Rs 6,000 per user to port their number. If an average of eight telcos shell out about Rs 1,200 crore each to upgrade their networks, the sector will have an additional burden of Rs 10,000 crore. And if only 2% of the country's 400 million-plus cellular subscribers were to avail MNP, then eight million users must share the cost of network upgradation, which works out to over Rs 6,000 per user. "Only those customers, for the benefit of whom the MNP is being implemented, should be made to bear the cost of the same and not the ordinary customers, who are not going to get any benefit from the implementation of MNP. All these customers, who will utilise the MNP, are big entrepreneurs, professionals, businessmen who will save huge switching costs, otherwise, they will have to invest on informing friends and business partners about new number, missing calls from uninformed people and updating company web pages, brochures and business cards etc. These customers can afford and must pay for availing this facility," BSNL said its statement to Trai. Other GSM players share the same stand although they have not provided specific numbers to Trai. Bharti Airtel is of the view that 'all operators who make the investment (for MNP) are entitled to recover their costs'. "We recommend that the investments being made by operators for the implementation of MNP needs to recovered only from the consumers, who want to port their numbers, and ordinary customers should not be penalised by increased tariffs and call charges from them," Bharti Airtel said in its communication to Trai. Idea Cellular has said that providing this facility to the consumer would involve a one-time capex and recurring opex and 'hence, service providers should be compensated for these costs'. MTNL, which offers fixed and mobile services in Delhi and Mumbai, has gone a step further and sought that it be compensated for implementing MNP. MTNL's logic is that its fixed line network has been built by multiple vendors and has a large mix of switches, both old and new, a bulk of which has to be replaced for routing of calls of those customers who retain their number, but change their operator. "Fixed line operator should also be compensated for the huge additional expenditure required for upgradation of its local, tandem and tax switches for the implementation of mobile number portability. MTNL should be compensated by giving suitable share from the porting charges,"MTNL added. But, the case for high porting fee has been strongly opposed by CDMA major Reliance Communications, which had also launched GSM services earlier this year. RCOM has said that since it costs less than Rs 50 for a pre-paid subscriber to take a new connection, the porting cost should be lower than this figure and has suggested that the fee be fixed at Rs 20. The ADAG group-promoted telco has also pointed out that countries, such as Hong Kong & Finland, where the porting charges were kept at a bare minimum had experienced the best results with MNP. "Having no exit barrier in India is also a main reason for very high churn rate in India and probably also a recipe for successful MNP implementation,"RCOM said. The telco also added that globally most regulators were of the view that costs incurred for implementing MNP were an 'inevitable consequence of a fully competitive mobile market' and were borne by the telcos.

  6. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 4:02 IST DNA India Humour has its grim side as radio station Big FM 92.7 would have learnt recently, with actor Sunny Deol crying foul over one of the station's shows, Son Sonny, that he claims "is cheap comedy and in very bad taste". At a press conference on Tuesday, Deol's lawyer Ashok Saraogi said, "All kinds of derogatory, defamatory, scandalous and libelous remarks have been made against my client, his father and brothers. My client was further shocked to notice that cheap comedy is sought to be made by utilizing the voice patterns and acting[styles] of my client and his father. Also the station is using Sunny's name which makes people think he is actually participating in the show. Sunny is deeply disturbed by this." Saraogi added that the radio station has been given a notice period of seven days to pay damages of Rs200 crore to the actor. "If we do not get a response from them, we will file a suit against them in the Bombay high court." If need be, he said, they would also initiate criminal proceedings under section 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code which attracts a punishment of up to two years' imprisonment. "I have nothing against mimicry but it should not be ugly. Everybody has a social responsibility," said Deol, adding that his family had been putting up with the show for long but it had caused him far too much hurt. "I would not want to get into the specifics of the show's content but you have to hear it yourself. It provokes me, makes me very upset," he said. In the legal notice issued to Anil Ambani, Tarun Katyal, Ashutosh Khanna, BigFM 92.7 and Reliance Big Entertainment on July 31, Saraogi said, "For the past several months, it has been noticed and experienced that wherever my client passes from, remarks are made against my client and people are not looking at him with the same respect." Owing to the damage caused to his image on the show that is becoming increasingly popular, the legal notice says, Sunny has also lost out on many film offers from different producers. The notice further states, "A film artiste and particularly, the artiste, who is holding an image of lead hero/macho man, cannot be portrayed as funny/comic figure before the people at large and that too, casually and/or regularly such that he becomes a laughing stock."

  9. One of 5 mobile subscribers will port numbers when MNP is introduced: Survey Sify - Business Line 2009-07-30 10:12:04 One of five mobile phone subscribers would change their operator if number portability - which allows users to retain their number even if they changed their operator - is introduced in the market. The circles in which subscribers are more likely to shift are Mumbai and Delhi Metro, Uttar Pradesh East and West, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Rest of West Bengal (excluding Kolkata Metro). Circles in which subscribers show higher retention levels are Chennai Metro, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh East, Rest of Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai Metro), rest of Tamil Nadu (minus Chennai Metro), Bihar, and Jharkhand. Loyalty to operators is seen to be higher among lower socio-economic groups, older age groups, and among women. According to a survey by the Nielsen Co to gauge consumer attitudes and behaviour towards mobile operators in India, one in four Reliance and Tata Indicom subscribers would be keen to change their operator if number migration is introduced, followed by close to one in five (19 per cent) of BSNL subscribers. The survey covered 12,500 mobile subscribers as respondents across 50 centres in India. High spenders, post-paid subscribers and business subscribers show a greater tendency to switch if Mobile Number Portability is introduced. Pre-paid, low and medium spend users are not motivated to switch. Price, primary driver "When Mobile Number Portability was introduced in the US, price/promotions were by far the leading drivers of acquisition. Ultimately the operator who leveraged the propensity of subscribers to choose based on price/promotions was successful in riding the Mobile Number Portability wave. In India, Mobile Number Portability can be leveraged by operators through smart, targeted marketing and promotions to coincide with the introduction of the facility," said Shankari Panchapakesan, Executive Director, Telecom Practice, The Nielsen Company, and India.

  13. The Hindu Business Line New Delhi, July 23 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today indicated that the Government should redefine broadband services making it mandatory for operators to offer at least 2Mbps speed. According to existing norms, broadband is defined with speed of only 256 kbps. Speaking at a telecom seminar organised by Assocham, Dr J. S. Sarma, Chairman, TRAI, said that the target set for roll out of broadband by the Government can be achieved only if the definition of broadband is redefined and resources from USO fund are utilised. Dr Sarma said that while there are countries which offer speeds of over 20Mbps, India is still stuck at 256 kbps. Changing the definition of broadband will have major ramification for operators if they want to claim subsidy from the Government. If offering a minimum of 2Mbps speed is made mandatory, operators will have to ramp up their network. “We do not think it is feasible to move from 256 kbps to 2Mbps in one shot. If at all the definition has to be revised then they should move to 512kbps, otherwise it will be too costly for both operators and subscribers,” said a GSM player. However, the WiMax industry is backing the proposal. According to WiMax players, the technology will enable operators to offer more than 2Mbps of wireless broadband services.

You can change the skin from the bottom of any page by selecting IP.Board Lo-Fi from the drop down selector. I'm posting this reply through Opera Mini.
  17. The All New Rimweb!

No, not possible at all. Since it is new it will feel different and so it will take time to get adjusted to the new feel. However a skin which is more similar to the old version will be available soon so that you can have the old feel.

  21. The All New Rimweb!

Yes, external links in posts and signatures have been configured to open in a new window. Let internal links in posts and signatures open in existing window as it cannot be configured for signatures alone, maybe I will submit a feature request for that.
  22. The All New Rimweb!

Well I just understood what exactly you were trying to say as I noticed the words "external links" in this topic title. You did not mention the word "external links" when you asked me earlier. I thought you were saying that every hyperlinks in the forum were opening in a new window for you in the previous version including the links to posts, sub forums, etc. You seem to have referred a "hyperlink" as an "external link", however a "hyperlink" just refers to a link that is clickable and opens to the new document be it external or internal link. OK, I have now configured "external links" in posts to open in a new Window here is an external link for you to test: http://www.google.com I hope this is what you were asking for?
  23. Difference Between Cdma/wcdma/gsm

"W-CDMA (Wideband-CDMA) is a GSM technology and has nothing to do with CDMA which Reliance uses. Reliance CDMA2000 1x network operates on the 800 Mhz band.
  24. The All New Rimweb!

What do you mean by "goes to the last topic"? The link will take you to the "new post" based on your session. When you open it "once", that post will be marked as "read" for your account's session.
