  1. 30 Jun 2009, 0205 hrs IST Times of India News Network The 95 dialling, which had been introduced for intra-state landline communication and then removed some four months ago, has returned, this time to mobile numbers. Some mobile phone companies, including Airtel and Idea Cellular, have started giving new mobile connections with the number. In technical terms, the first digit of a telephone number is called a level. With the ever-increasing population of mobile users, the existing levels have not been able to accommodate the growing demand, and the Department of Telecommunication had decided to introduce the 95 series for mobile service providers. Along with this, the 94, 93 and 92 series were allotted to specific service providers, including BSNL mobile, Reliance CDMA and Tata Indicom. With the new changes, these series will soon be allotted to other service providers too. Sources in Reliance Communications confirmed that the company has received an allotment of 95 series in some circles. The source refused to divulge more information about the allotment of 95 series. When contacted, an Airtel spokesperson confirmed that the company had been allotted a series starting with 95. The first four digits of the Airtel numbers will be 9516. The company has introduced the 95 series in post-paid as well in pre-paid connections in its Maharashtra region. Idea Cellular has also received an allotment of numbers starting with 9594, and customers have started using these new numbers in its Mumbai circle. Speaking to TOI, Chandra Prakash, chief general manager, BSNL, Maharashtra circle said, "With the instruction from DoT, BSNL has stopped the 95 dialling service. We are not aware that the DoT has started allotting mobile numbers starting with the 95 series and BSNL has not yet received an allotment from the concerned department." The Vodafone Essar official also confirmed that the company has received a 95 series allotment for its prepaid connections and it will available in the markets in a couple of days. The company has not yet finalised its plans about post-paid connections. As per DoT norms, the other series will also be vacated for other service providers, which is a part of the number-portability scheme.

  3. 3g doubts

Maybe they are focusing more on GSM now since they just launched GSM and want to compete with the other leaders in GSM? I do not think they will want to quit CDMA eventually.
  4. 3g doubts

    1) Reliance GSM and Reliance CDMA are "3G ready" 2) For 3G with mobility they will require to bid and win license for both GSM and CDMA separately. 3) You will feel like using broadband internet on your mobile. It will be a "giant leap" for mobile internet in India. Currently with 2G you will feel like using a dial up connection in the late 90s. Hopefully 3G will become a reality by 2010.

  6. Broadband+ : What Does Credit Limit Mean?

For data based plans Reliance has assigned a Credit Limit amount which is just higher than your monthly commitment. They have set a low Credit Limit amount so that you would know when you exceed your data limit usage and avoid huge bills for additional data usage. Many new users won't realize that they have exceeded their usage and would go on using until their see an inflated bill.

  15. The Hindu Business Line Wednesday, Jun 24, 2009 The Department of Telecom has imposed a penalty on mobile operators, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Idea Cellular for not verifying the details of all their subscribers. The move comes after the DoT’s vigilance cell found subscribers on the operator’s network without proper documents. For example, in the case of Bharti Airtel, the vigilance officers found 2,373 subscribers, out of a sample of 22,668 users in Gujarat, with missing photo identity and address (PIA) proof and/or invalid customer acquisition forms (CAF). In the case of Vodafone Essar, 4,913 connections out of a sample of 43,771 were found to be without proper documents. Reliance Communications had 3,798 cases of unverified subscribers out of a sample of 19,445, according to the DoT report. The report is for October 2008-March 2009. The DoT has imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 per unverified subscribers. Operators have been ordered to pay up the fine within 21 days. While the Government had notified the verification norms more than a year ago, this is the first time that it has imposed a penalty for non-compliance. The operators have been seeking more time to complete the verification of all the 400 million subscribers. However, with security agencies expressing concern over the availability of SIM cards to unverified subscribers, DoT has swung into action. Too low to deter Security agencies have pointed out that the fine amount was too low to act as deterrent on the operators against giving connections to anyone without proper documents. The DoT has also asked the operators to shut down dealers not verifying the subscriber before giving out a connection. However, industry observers pointed out that since the operators are under pressure to sustain the growth in subscription, the verification system may not be fool-proof. The telecom industry claims that every measure is being taken to adhere to the verification norms. An industry body monitors the issue regularly. At the same time, operators have cautioned that strict verification laws could impact the mobile growth rate since more than 80 per cent of the user base is on the pre-paid platform.
  16. Published on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 20:09 , Updated at Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 21:28 Source : CNBC-TV18 Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group and AT&T may explore talks for a tie-up, sources told CNBC-TV18's Siddharth Zarabi. Both companies may look at an equity deal in Reliance Communications. When contacted, AT&T said it does not comment on rumour or speculation. ADAG too said it does not comment on speculation. Reliance Communications is among top three telecommunication companies in India and operates in both the GSM and CDMA space. In 2008, the company had explored merger talks with South Africa's MTN. AT&T is keen on foraying into India. It had earlier stated that it could acquire a license or a company. Here is a verbatim transcript of Siddharth Zarabi’s comments on CNBC-TV18: This could be a big move by Anil Ambani and AT&T. The latter has been looking at India for some time now. It exited India in 2004 at least from the telecom services business. Reliance Communications last year was talking to MTN. What we pick up from our sources is that some sort of initial and preliminary assessment of the possibilities of a deal is happening. For the record, both companies have said that they do not comment on market speculation or rumours. But our sources say this is something that is being considered at this point. In fact, there were reports earlier this week about Reliance Communications offering a small stake to China Mobile, which the latter has subsequently officially denied. At this point in time, there is no confirmation with regards to what kind of structure this proposed deal could have in the future. But clearly what we are picking up at this point from very reliable sources is that both companies are possibly going to tango in the near future.
  17. China Mobile denies any deal with India's Reliance Communications Jun. 23, 2009 China Knowledge China Mobile Ltd, the country's largest telecom operator, currently has no plans to invest in the Indian telecom market, said a spokeswoman for China Mobile, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The Business Standard on Monday reported that China Mobile and Reliance Communications had held preliminary talks for an alliance, with a possible 5% to 6% equity participation. Spokeswoman Rainie Lei denied the report, saying there were no talks between the Chinese carrier and India's Reliance Communications Ltd on forming a strategic partnership. Reliance Communicaitons is the second-largest mobile operator in India. The company is in need of cash to bid in the 3G wireless spectrum auction at the end of this year, said the paper.

  21. DNA India Monday, June 22, 2009 1:32 IST According to sources in the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), an alarming jump in 'dropped calls' by mobile subscribers has led two mobile service providers to gain Rs900 crore and Rs800 crore respectively. This undue gain has gone unnoticed by the public and authorities because consumers are unaware of the implications of dropped calls and the authorities find themselves powerless in the absence of rules to rein in the recalcitrant service providers. A 'dropped call' is one in which the caller or receiver suddenly go offline in the middle of a call. The causes for this phenomenon are failure at the transmission tower of the service provider or excessive congestion on the tower. People who travel from one place to another often experience dropped calls because the seamless transfer of the call from one tower to another is hampered because of congestion. Dropped calls can now be very accurately measured by scientific methods available all over the world and installed by some of the more conscientious mobile service providers in India. It is only by the use of this technology that TRAI has been able to gauge the extent of dropped calls which is as high as 9% to 11% for the two erring providers mentioned above. This undue gain of the cell operators at the cost of the average consumer has the making of a scam, which is worth delving deeper into. It is significant to note that call rates are in pulses of one minute in India and a call which is dropped either in the first minute itself (which is very common) or in the midst of a conversation, results in a fresh call being made, starting a fresh billing cycle. It has been worked out that in such circumstances, most subscribers will end up paying for an additional minute. There is thus no alternative for TRAI but to come down heavily on such mischief which heavily benefits the mobile service companies. The service providers must be mandated to install the device which tracks call drops and these must be reported to TRAI. Heavy penalties must be levied on companies whose call drop rate exceeds, say 2% (it is internationally accepted that in certain circumstances a call drop may occur for unknown reasons). Consumers must have a column in their bills mentioning the number of calls dropped in a billing cycle and in case this exceeds a certain norm, be entitled to a refund which is twice the call rate as per their respective plans. Lastly, any excess amount arising from such undue billing should be credited to a Consumer Welfare Fund under the TRAI. Another solution is that TRAI insists for call rates to be offered in seconds rather than in minutes. Call drops will still continue to irritate, but at least nobody will enrich himself at the expense of the consumer.
  22. www.ricmail.com is the website for registering and accessing email service provided by Reliance for its Reliance NetConnect and BroadNet customers. However when I access the website now (verified using proxy as well), it is showing that the domain has expired and needs to be renewed! "ricmail.com expired on 08/24/2008 and is pending renewal or deletion" It has been past 1 week and they haven't bothered to renew it?!?! However as per whois: Created: 2002-08-24 Expires: 2009-08-24 Updated: 2008-08-30 So it looks like they renewed it late (on 30th) and the renewal request is pending at the registrar as of now!
  23. Sorry, I meant to say Service Tax @ 10.30%. It may or may not be applicable for the type of work that he does. The types of work eligible for service tax are mentioned here: http://www.servicetax.gov.in/st-actmainpg.htm - His CA will be able to determine it. Edit: I guess it will be applicable as per this clause:
  24. Generally if you are doing freelance work through websites like rentacoder.com, etc. they won't ask you for such invoices. However if you are going to have local clients (direct dealing) which are bigger companies, etc. they may ask for invoice. If that is the case then you have to get a Current Account from bank as a Sole proprietorship. No registration is required for a sole proprietorship. You just have to file income tax return in your personal name. Sales tax may be applicable depending on they type of work that you do. You have to consult with a CA to find out if that is applicable for your work. In that case you have to do sales tax registration.
  25. Press Trust of India New Delhi May 29, 2009, 17:18 IST Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications is planning to launch a Rs 150-crore advertising campaign for its nation-wide GSM services and is believed to be on the verge of signing Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan as its brand ambassador. According to sources, Reliance Communications is planning a Rs 150-crore media campaign for its GSM services featuring its new brand ambassador, Hrithik Roshan. Sources said the company is in the final stages of signing an endorsement deal with Hrithik, who would be the official face for the company’s mobile, data and DTH businesses. When contacted, the company spokesperson declined to comment. The three-year deal with Hrithik is believed to be worth over Rs five crore annually and excludes the fees payable for appearances and events, sources said adding the overall deal could touch Rs 10 crore annually. The new campaign is expected to be on air in the first week of June. This is Reliance Communications' first advertising campaign for its GSM service, which was launched on commercial basis in January 2009 and has since then added over 13 million subscribers. The company is targeting 100 million subscriber base (GSM and CDMA) by the end of this fiscal. The Bollywood hunk, the brand new face of this leading Indian network, urges fans and subscribers of the service provider to never leave anything unsaid or undone... “Just pick up the phone, don’t wait... go for it!” is Hrithik’s powerful and heartfelt message in a new commercial. Proud to be associated with a brand “that has constantly redefined how India communicates” and because he truly “believes in everything that it stands for,” Hrithik added, “when was the last time you felt like making that one call just to say a Hi, or a Thank-you, or Sorry? But you held back? The more you thought about whether to act or not, the more you hesitated, and then the moment was gone. This is my chance to tell the world to leave behind hesitations. To make that call. To connect. To go for it.” Sanjay Behl, Group Head, Brand and Marketing, Reliance Communications said, “Today if over 350 million Indians connect on a mobile phone, it is because Reliance dreamed it to be possible. The addition of world class 3G ready GSM network to our already strong CDMA network is set to redefine the face of Indian telecommunications. Our omnipresent network ensures that you can act at the speed of thought. Wherever you maybe, whenever it may be.”
