The Trai chairman is understood to have written a letter to the Department of Telecommunications' (DoT) secretary, citing concerns on the non-availability of CDMA spectrum in certain circles. The DoT has approved starting 3G services under the 800 Mhz spectrum. A source said the dearth of spectrum in the 800 Mhz band, according to the internal Trai study — in circles such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Orissa — is likely to affect the expansion plans of existing CDMA operators like Reliance Communications (RCom), Tata Teleservices (TTSL) and state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL), which had sought CDMA spectrum for expansion. Moreover, it will also delay the 3G policy and rollout plans, that too at a time when global majors like Vodafone are expected to enter the fray. The 3G spectrum shortage is also likely to impact the high-speed wireless broadband rollout plans of CDMA players, with operators planning a nationwide rollout of Evolution Value Data Optimised (EVDO), which is a high-speed standard for wireless broadband, primarily supported by the 800 mhz band. CDMA players were expecting to get spectrum under the extended GSM (e-GSM) band — 880-890 Mhz band paired with 925-935 Mhz — but this seems unlikely as the GSM operators' body, the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), has laid its claim to it.

Mukesh calls MTN to disconnect Anil ; Anil Ambani's group charges Mukesh of sabotaging MTN deal 13 Jun, 2008, 2205 hrs IST - Press Trust of India The war between Ambani brothers erupted again on Friday night with younger Anil's group charging Mukesh-led Reliance Industries with attempting to "sabotage" its potential multi-billion dollar deal with South African telecom giant MTN. Mukesh Ambani group, however, declined to comment on allegations from the Anil's group that RIL had communicated to MTN about its claim to right of first refusal to buy controlling stake in RCOM and it was "legally and factually untenable, baseless and misconceived." An RIL spokesperson said "no comments" when asked about the issues raised by Anil Ambani group. Asserting that the new combined entity would have operating profits of Rs 50,000 crore, much higher than the Mukesh Ambani's group, RCOM official alleged that "RIL is seeking to disrupt the creation of one of the world's most valuable telecoms combinations." Claiming that RIL's communication to MTN was based on a 'unilateral' agreement of January 12, 2006 signed by RIL officials, ADAG said that the agreement for effecting the family settlement was held "unfair and unjust" by the Bombay High Court later that year. RCOM officials, however, exuded confidence that RIL's attempt would not delay the negotiations on the deal, that is believed to be in the region of over 70 billion dollars where Anil Ambani could be Chairman of the combined entity with single largest shareholding. Reuters India Wednesday, May 21, 2008 New Delhi Diversified Videocon group will start rolling out its telecom network from mid August and is aiming for 10 percent of the Indian telecom market in five years, its chairman said on Wednesday. "We are aiming for 50 million in five years. The Indian market will have crossed 500 million by then," Venugopal Dhoot told Reuters on the sidelines of a conference. "We have got spectrum in South India. We are rolling out from August 15, starting with Tamil Nadu" he said. The group, which controls Videocon Industries Ltd, would seek to share passive infrastructure wherever possible, Dhoot said, adding it was open to bringing in a foreign partner for the telecoms business. Videocon group expressed its intentions to capture 10 percent of the Indian telecom sector in five years as it is ready to roll out its telecom network from mid August. According to the estimates made by the company’s CEO, Venugopal Dhoot, the Indian mobile market will have 500 million subscribers within the next five years. The company also said that it is open to share passive infrastructure wherever it seems possible and ready for a foreign alliance for telecom business. Diversified Videocon group has been approached by Middle East telecom firms Emirates Telecommunications Corp of the UAE, and Qatar Telecom for tie-ups in India, the Indian firm's chairman said on Wednesday. I dunno what 'ODM' and 'OTAF' stands for, but all I can say is, using the 'ODM' code, you can find out the date and time on which the handset was activated/purchased. To check it out, send an SMS with: ODM MDN (eg.:ODM 2233333333) to 3737 This code is used by Service Centre technicians to check whether the handset is within warranty period or not. Any SMS sent to 3737 will not be charged. And the interesting thing is that you can find out the OTAF of any number by changing the MDN as required

One of my friend said he got an SMS from Reliance saying that EVDO is coming soon with 2 mpbs speed. I haven't seen that SMS though. Not sure whether they will launch it before the 3G license is auctioned, which is getting delayed further and further.
