TRAI favours steep cut in high-speed Internet rates By Our Special Correspondent NEW DELHI, APRIL 29. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today called for "slaughtering'' the prices of high-speed Internet in order to boost broad band usage. "The price of Internet of over 256 kbps should be brought down to about Rs. 400 a month from existing Rs. 1,600 by several fiscal and physical concessions,'' said the TRAI Chairman, Pradip Baijal, here today. The TRAI feels that the 33 per cent tax and 8 per cent service tax is too high and needs to `slaughtered.' Though the slashing of duties will result in an estimated revenue loss of about Rs. 200 crores annually, the usage will increase dramatically. Recently, business process outsourcing companies had submitted a charter to the TRAI detailing several bandwidth related problems. Mr. Baijal said the TRAI also wanted the Government to remove anti-dumping duty for recycled computers imported into India and permit 100 per cent depreciation in the first year of computers. All these measures will help increase the number of Internet users to four crores and broadband subscribers to two crores. While the number of phone users has increased rapidly, Internet usage has fallen well below growth projections made from time to time by analysts and the TRAI. The TRAI has also advocated the unbundling of the last-mile link, which means enabling the use of existing infrastructure of state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's (BSNL) copper network to reach consumers in the households. In other words, BSNL's wide reach to crores of households should be made available to Internet companies. The TRAI wants conditions to be created to allow Indian and foreign companies to host their websites within the country. This could be done by offering income-tax concession of at least 50 per cent for the first five years. Duties on inputs and finished product used in providing broadband and Internet services should be reduced to the level equivalent to mobile phones and Internet service providers (ISPs) should be exempt from payment of service tax for the next five years. "The exemption will reduce immediately the cost of purchasing such services by 8 per cent to the consumers, noted the TRAI note on the subject. While waiving the service tax, the TRAI wanted the Union Government to advise states to waive the eight per cent sales tax on items being used for broadband applications. The TRAI's recommendations were welcomed by the industry. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said, "The recommendations would remove bottlenecks in proliferation of broadband in India.'' The CII has been working extensively towards broadband penetration in India and is pleased that a lot of CII's recommendations, which were submitted to the TRAI have been incorporated in the final report. According to the CII, TRAI's goals of achieving 20 million subscribers by 2010 affirm CII's vision of broadband playing a key role in boosting the economy and increase the quality of life. Reliance IndiaMobile Intorduces Two Camera Phones
JAX replied to Arun's topic in Reliance Communications
Upfront payment = u pay the full cost of the phone when u get the phone. There is no installment. -
Stuffs like case,Keypad, display etc. may be reused. But importan stuffs like pcb, processor etc. need to be replaced. So old mobile wih network or some simila problems won't be of any use.So I don't think it will be as economical as mentioned above. Even if really cheap/second hand parts were used, then the mobile will be lacking features. I still belive this is just anothor rumor foating around. I have only heard of many who got a friend whose friend converted a cdma to gsm. But never seen someone who has converted a cdma to gsm
-
Converting CDMA mobile to GSM is one of the rumor going on for some time(Especially with Nokia 2280 due to the presense of R-UIM slot.). As someone said somewhere ( ) , just to make things simple, Let me put it this way...Consider an FM radio and AM radio. Both works on diferent technology and different frequency. So u can't convert one to another without large modifications. Even if u somehow made the FM radio to tune to AM frequencies, U still won't be able to recive AM stations as they r on different modulations. Similar is the cas with CDMA and GSM. Both are just entirely different technology which cannot be converted to each other. Have a nice time JAX

Flag Announces First major project with Reliance
JAX replied to neel's topic in Reliance Communications
I wonder when they will start their service... -
Its' R-UIM supported...NOT enabled. The Hardware of the 2280 available in India support R-UIM. but it's disabled by the software in the mobile. So unless the R-UIM slot is enabled by Flashing, the R-UIM slot is useless in the 2280.
-
R-UIMs are to CDMA what SIMs are to GSM. These are mainly used in Prepaid CDMA connections(not yet availble in India. To be launched soon by Reliance). It's common in China, Thailand, Kores etc. It's used similar to GSM SIMs. Your Close friend is right about availablilty of Phones with support for GSM & CDMA. Models like Samsung's SCH-A790 support both GSM and CDMA.U can easily roam between GSM and CDMA networks. Can u ask ur friend about the about the model No. of a few such phones? But Unfortunatly, Nokia 2280 is a CDMA ONLY phone. It cannot be used in GSM network. Here is a picture of a R-UIM from China's Unicom
-
Yes...Nokia 2280 is the first in India with R-UIM support
-
No, It's not possible to use normal GSM SIM cards on any CDMA mobile. Both works on different technology and are not compatable with each other. But u can use R-UIM(Removable - User Identification Module) on Nokia 2280. It's something similar to GSM network's SIM on CDMA netwrork. There is a R-UIM slot under the battery on 2280.

RConnect is like Dishnet's DishNETdial....it's just the Internet service offerend by Reliance. Just like they are having packages by number of hours, Reliance is providing unlimited access per month for Rs. 100. u will be charged the airtime usage @ 40ps for using RConnect. Since ur office is providing dial-up facility to wok from home, I think u can connect/dialup directly to it. U don't have to connect through RConnect.
-
I don't want my number to change or have more digits
-
Don't worry about the software...it's just a dialer and the driver for the phone. it's freely available @ reliance web site
-
A really needed feature
-
Mine is S/W : R23REL08 PRL:1 guess I need an update.

I am also getting similar speed....about 50 to 60 kbps...nowhere near their claim:(
