  1. Thanks mate! But, I don't really like the look of these querty phones. But will still look into their specs shortly, once I get some time. Any idea if they give the best quality pics in this price range?
  2. Samsung Corby Speed CDMA Launched

We are considering only the CDMA Corby. GSM Corby is capacitive, and I guess this fact has been better publicized. But then there are variants... dunno if all are capacitive. My question was if both GSM and CDMA versions have capacitive screens, do they suffer from same/similar issues discussed earlier? Ah...!? Well, today morning, I asked my friend to try using a pen or something to see if it works... yet to hear from him. By definition, a capacitive screen should work without pressure... just finger contact should be enough. Seems Samsung has done something amazing! Lol!! In this case, even though the screen may technically be capacitive, but for all practical purposes (except the fact that you can't use a stylus), it should be considered a resistive screen. I'd wonder why they have bothered to use capacitive screens at all. They could have plonked in a resistive ones and saved on cost. Btw, do GSM Corby screens also have the same issues? Anyway, for the wrong info, but my own experience and my friend's testimony pointed to a resistive screen. For your Information.. please I am using this phone (corby speed f339) since february end. i am using all sort of gadgets with it for touching the screen. i mean i use stylus of my cousins HTC Touch while playing games, i use ballpen's cover's tip for more precise actions, i use my nail tips, i use my keys some times. everything works fine. Gosh... more confusion! If all that stuff is working, then it has to be resistive!!

  4. The Docomo site does not mention that the benefit of the previous voucher will lapse. Can anybody else please confirm?
  5. Samsung Corby Speed CDMA Launched

Interesting... when I used my friend's phone, I kinda recall that it even felt like resistive, as li'l pressure was required. Hope that site is right... I tried for few mins. to search for the specs. online, but could not find. Unfortunately, it seems most sites, including manufactures just report these phones as touch screens, without mentioning the type.
  6. Samsung Corby Speed CDMA Launched

Dude, let me 1st mention that I'v handled this fone (friend's) for a v short while. Though It has a virtual querty keypad, it is small and one is prone to make mistakes on closely spaced keys on a totally flat surface. There is nothing like real separate well designed keys, with good tactile feedback, if you want to do fast and efficient texting. Otherwise its not like its really bad. This is the opinion of my friend too... who has been using it for about a month. Anyway, I suggest you also seek opinions of others here who have actually used to phone extensively for texting. Confirmed with my friend - screen is definitely resistive.
  7. Lets not forget the banning of text messages in J & K. These funny bans are happening too often... they don't to be too sure of anything themselves.
  8. Samsung Corby Speed CDMA Launched

Why on Earth would you want this phone when it will be used only for calling and minimal texting? Besides, its not great for texting. The basic phones around 1 - 2 k would be far more appropriate! Corby CDMA's screen is resistive. iPhone's is capacitive. So it is of course not at all comparable.
  9. Is this confirmed?? If they allow it along with the 49 STV, I would consider it as a replacement for my RGSM... which I'm really fed up of. First RCOM has to improve their network and voice quality of RGSM. Now a days I am getting call drop issues in CDMA too. There is no use in reducing the tariff and giving promo offers unless they are improved. Even in the absence of improvement, they should make the tariffs competitive, because if even the tariff is higher and the network worse than that of competitors (which is the current scenario!), then why would anybody want to stick to RGSM? RGSM must be the worst network around, as of now. So tariffs must also be significantly lower, to compensate.
  10. Seems most people are jumping to conclusions. There needs to be some evidence to support these allegations! I'm more inclined to suspect vested interests in the garb of security concerns.
  11. Vested interests everywhere. What was needed was regulation, tests, etc., esp. in areas of radiation, etc. Instead they just go for an all out ban! How lame can it get?? This decision should be taken to court...
  12. My plan is 256 kbps but for March, they had promised 512 kbps. I did get the double speed benefit until about last week... but approx. last 7 days it has come down below even 256 kbps!
  13. Wow, that would be way cool! I'd dump my horrid RGSM without batting an eyelid! Too bad they still don't operate in Poona/Maharasthra.
  14. This is very bad... the handsets are a very good competition for the biggies.
  15. Got the refund from them the other day. I tried Giftmate only because other users here said its very reliable.... and of course the previous cash back offer was tempting. I never had a problem with the nearly half dozen or so mobile recharges I made using Giftmate. But now your experience and my own is scaring me. Failed recharges are a big pain. Now maybe I'll stick to HDFC for mobile recharges and the Tata Sky portal for Tata sky. HDFC seems to have become more reliable and also never had issues with the T Sky portal recharges. Btw, does anybody know if you can recharge special tariff vouchers using Giftmate? For eg. Airtel has a Rs. 8 value voucher which reduces calling rates for a month. Normally shopkeepers are v reluctant to undertake such small recharges. If its possible thru Giftmate, it would be a boon.
  16. The 3.5" floppies were notorious for making your data vanish. Even the ones made by Sony were trash. But strangely those that came with drivers used to be quite reliable! The 5.5 inch ones that preceded the 3.5 ones were also pretty reliable. But those went out ages ago. Sad to see the good old floppies going extinct.
  17. In what way is it better than the Samsungs and LGs of the same price range?
  18. Too good to be true. Tempted to take Docomo too... Confirmations, reviews awaited...
  19. Gosh, seems Aircel has been infected with the Airtel bug. Airtel's swindling tactics seem highly infectious. Well, demand a refund and use up the balance before disposing the SIM.
  20. Sms From Reliance For Security

Firstly, how does one know that these kind of SMSs actually originate from RCom or some prankster?
  21. Hitesh, got the parcel yesterday. Very well packed and all... Just got the time to install the sound accelerator and got it to work. Seems to be working fine. Will test it now... hoping to find some improvement over the on-board sound system. Haven't had the time to check out the HDD yet. One issue for that is that there are no more power points in the case. So will have to find some workaround for that. Does anybody here by any chance know if there is any way to have one more power point from the existing ones? Anyways, thanks a zillion dude. The current system should serve my current needs for some more time.
  22. Reliance GSM Network in Pune/Vishranthwadi

They finally sent someone to my residence today. He checked out the signal intensity on my handset and made a few calls to his dept. Said there are issues and they would attempt to rectify. I emphasized quite strongly that the issue is not specific to me nor my area but the situation is similar in most/all parts of the city. He said it may be over a year till we find significant improvements. But he did say they will try to optimize/tune stuff so as to see some difference in my area in about 5 - 6 days. He did not say it explicitly at all (for obvious reasons), but he kinda implied that the equipment that RCom uses isn't upto the mark, etc. Now assuming what he is saying is true (about noticable improvement), and it would take over a year to see some real improvements, is that how long users are ready to wait? Of course, one can never tell for sure. It could well be like MNP. They keep telling you its coming, but like the horizon, it never comes. Meanwhile, you get an awesome lesson in waiting... or maybe, in learning not to wait. Btw, I know RCom is new, but so is Docomo. And from what I hear from several users, it seems to be in a much better state than RGSM. Anybody has any idea about how Aircel is in Poona?
  23. This is so frustrating - after using Giftmate for recharging my mobiles, I attempted to recharge my DTH account (Tata Sky) using Giftmate. Giftmate shows the transaction as successful, but the DTH account has not been credited. Result - no tv for 3 days. Finally, I got fed up of waiting and recharged again using HDFC. Still waiting for refund from Giftmate. They haven't even replied yet. When I first called, they said refund is likely to be given in 24 hours. Bad show.
  24. Reliance GSM Network in Pune/Vishranthwadi

What I'm saying is that even if its not considered a DND violation as of now, the rules should be amended to include it. One interesting thing I have observed - Airtel was not displaying anything till sometime back... at least not in most cells. Once in a while it would work only in some cells. Then suddenly they woke up to this brilliant idea of misusing it for ads. And after that all their cells seem to display only ads in place of the location. I'm terribly sure because I obviously don't have connections of all operators, but it seems Airtel was the 1st to start this obnoxious trend... and then others followed. Luckily Idea seems to have resisted. In fact the more I have been associated with Idea, the more reasons I find that it is relatively the best operator in most ways, except when it comes to tariffs! One of the guys from the tech dept. also said that voice clarity issues are likely due to interference from other cell sites. But whatever it is, it gotta be fixed!
  25. Reliance GSM Network in Pune/Vishranthwadi

Today RCom called me several times. The callers were mostly from the tech. dept. (at least not call center employess.... thank gawd for small mercies!!) And each time, I have to explain the issue afresh. Don't know if they just like to discuss things or if they are really going to do something about the pathetic network. Worst is none of the callers seem to be aware that the network problem (or at least they pretended not to) is a city wide problem (heck, it might be country wide... but I'm not even getting there). They keep suggesting that there might be issues with my SIM card or handset or at best the BTS which serves the area of my residence. One of the females who called today asked me to explain and then kept me on hold while she looked up the BTS to which my phone was connected to at that moment (I was at home). The building on which she said my phone is latched to is barely 2-3 mins walking distance away. And yet the situation is so bad. She said that she will look into that particular BTS. I again reminded her that network issues exist throughout the city and I know several others facing similar issues. She didn't seem to buy that readily, but said would look into it. What is really bad is that almost all telcos now seem to misuse the "cell info display" on our phones for ads. I really feel this should considered a DND violation. I have observed that RCom and Airtel shamelessly use this exclusively for advertising. Idea seems to have resisted this temptation and usually displays the location... but sometimes coupled with ads. Don't know about others. I seriously feel we should try to complain about this abuse to TRAI, DoT, etc. Due to this misuse, its impossible for us customers to make out which BTS we are connected to... and also the area display can be quite useful when in unchartered territories. Instead we are made to look at very irritating ads.
