  1. How Safe Is Your Mobile?

    Very intresting post... thanks!
  2. Antivirus - Need To Buy One

Quick Heal I believe is an Indian product. Prolly the only Indian AV. Its supposed to be average at detection. I wouldnt consider it if top notch security is desired.
  3. Antivirus - Need To Buy One

Dudes, its not quite right to evaluate an AV just because of its detection rate. Ok.. even as far as detection goes... Kaspersky is supposed to be the best when it comes to signature based detection. But NOD32 scores in Heuristics! I'd say its VERY important that the AV does not slow down your comp or eat up your RAM. Your comp is supposed to be around to do your work... and fast... its not there just for your AV to run! Give your $ to developers who understand this and make products that hardly notice (like the ones Iv already mentioned). Norton and McAffee, etc, in the commercial catageory and Avast in the free catageory are the worst offenders... As for those looking for other free AVs, have a look at ClamWin. Its open source too. But when I last checked, they did not have a memory resident module. So u'll have to manually check files...
  4. Go Swadeshi

The wiser friend speketh: I dont think its a local problem. Im sure many members here will testify that BSNL has its own philosophy of operating, etc. Anyway, I cant speak about other areas, as I dont have any direct experience... so no more comments there... And its absolutely true that they look upon you as a thief if you bring billing errors to their notice! As for public sector companies being the messiahs of the nation, I dont think any of their employees give 2 figs... In fact their desire to work only for bribes is legend! And I dont think there is anything wrong in a group of people making a decent profit... as long as it is "legitemately" done. And btw, I have been to WebWorlds several times for several reasons when I was using RIM. I am no fan of RCom, but I dont recall needing to go twice to a Webworld for the same issue. With BSNL, less said the better. In fact their working hours themselves make it extremely difficult to visit. On the other hand WebWorlds are at least open till 8 pm. I dont know whats the state of the Webwords now... it has very likely deteriorated... as my experiences were in the Mukesh era... That said, Im not just trying to glorify the pvt. sector. I'd say both are important and generate the necessary competition in the market. I guess we all just vent after our experiences. After my experience with Hathway, I too would not have had any qualms of screaming from the rooftops that BSNL is God's gift to us... :Contento:
  5. Antivirus - Need To Buy One

Gosh... NOD32 seems real pricy! As for POP3 mail scanning, you can do without it... just remember to scan any attachments before opening. Very likely your AV will do it automatically, in fact. Even then there will be some risk... which can be addressed by using clients like say Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express, Outlook, etc. Also, if you use Gmail with POP3, I believe your mail would get scanned by Gmail before even landing in your Inbox. As for the post above, you really cant compare AVG with the commercial mentioned above! AVG is ok if you want a decent free AV... but it is NOT comparable with the best commercial stuff!
  6. Go Swadeshi

Quite so! Its the same here. DataOne is pretty good! In fact thats the main reason why we have still kept the BSNL landline. Though DataOne works so well.. and there have been VERY few downtimes... if you do run into any problem, support from BSNL is horrrible...
  7. Well pvt telcos are offering new SIMs with more talk time than the cost of the kit! So the cost of the SIM is less than zero!!
  8. Antivirus - Need To Buy One

Dude, dont even tough garbage like Norton / McAffee! I cant belive people can actually want to pay for such stuff!!! If you want a paid AV think of - Kaspersky / Eset NOD32 / Avira / BitDefender / PC-cillin If you want the very best detection, the 1st 2 are best. NOD32 is lighter amongst the two. If you want the lowest performance hit, go for Dr. Web or F-prot. Dont know the prices... thats something you'd need to find out, to get the best value for money, and for your kind of need.
  9. Go Swadeshi

Very funny... most of the negatives you have attributed to the private telcos are more applicable to BSNL! The pvt telcos have much better plans! And though their call centres are pathetic... BSNL is the same... if not worse! And Im not gonna even start talking about the network. Most important - just pay a visit to a BSNL exchange to get something done... and I guarante a rapid change in your philosophy... And btw, patronising a sub-standard services is NOT patriotic!
  10. Looks BAD... like most Nokia phones do...
  11. R World Getting Charged 10 Times More Why

Gawd no!!! They aren't so narrow minded! They cheat in all ways... they are truly multi-dimensional!
  12. Help Needed To Choose A Bike...

Would recommend the CBZ or Hunk... esp. since you are looking for eliablity and smoothness. Your wont find that kind of smoothness and refinement in Pulsar or Apache. While the bike is good, be very wary of the service centre/mechanics. It is they who do the max damage to your bike. If you really want to know of my experiences with my new CBZ, you can read it in the Overdrive forums. Will help you to prevent your brand new bike from getting raped by #$!#$% so called mechanics. Just google for "raccoon overdrive cbz". Somehow either the overdrive site isnt workign right now, or they have deleted the post. You can still read it in Google's cache though.
  13. Icici Bank

Quite so! In fact, I belive if you dont avail of the cheque book facility, the min. balance needs to be Rs. 500 only. All public sector and co-operative banks have similar requirements. As for pvt. banks, I have an a/c with HDFC, and my bal is way above the min. Rs. 5,000 required (regular savings a/c), but would HATE it if it increased... dont like the idea of having to keep money tied up if I require it... in fact may consider closing the account in that scenario. Anyway, HDFC already has Savings Plus and Savings Max accounts (with more frills) where you need to keep Rs. 10,000 & Rs. 25,000 as AQB. So I hope they dont make any changes. I just hope other banks dont start copying #^$!#&*%$ ICICI !!!
  14. ...And these gimmicks are supposed to boost brand image??? ??? ???
  15. Completed 1 year with Idea this week... so they made me an offer - Rs. 199 recharge, 1 year validity and Rs. 100 talk time!! And this on my I-card active plan. Damn cool... works out to just Rs. 8.25 per month! And they have reduced STD charges on this plan to Rs. 1.3 too! Offers, tariffs, network, service... Idea rox!
  16. Icici Bank

Don't know about the financial status of ICICI (& dont really care, as I dont have an a/c with them), but asking for Rs. 10,000 min balance in a basic savings account is BAD news! I certainly hope other private banks don't follow this path...
  17. Idea Cellular Rocks!

Shucks! Now it seems Idea has given better offers to everyone here... except me! But then, I guess they give different offers in different circles...
  18. But Lets Rock's tariff for calling other mobiles at night is 30 paise... that makes it significantly cheaper...
  19. Good plan! Hope other operators offer something similar. If it is international SMS, then Rs. 2.5 per SMS would make it the cheapest plan for international SMS, as far as I know... half of what everyone else is charging.
  20. True. But many pvt. operators are much worse. For eg. was looking at a YOU Telecom leaflet v recently, and it had un- limited connections at a measly 96 kbps or whereabouts. Broadband is a joke in India...
  21. System Help

chandannasta, running such heavy AV products on 128 MB RAM will make your system VERY slow! Consider the most lightweight products - Dr. Web or F-Prot. They have an INCREDIBLY small RAM footprint. You wont even notice you have them running. But they aren't free like AVG/Avast. Eset NOD32 is also very good... but its somewhere in the middle wrt RAM footprint... not as light as the above mentioned AVs but much lighter than most popular AV products currently in the market.
  22. Prepaid Call Details

Great... but 50 bucks is too much! They should just provide this info on their site, save on courier and printing costs, and give the service cheaper!
