  1. That depends on your use... you are obviously only talking about text emails. You'll have to forget about sharing pics, graphics, videos, ebooks, etc, etc. Besides, if you use web based email, you will also expend considerable data for loading ads and other fancy graphics... Its beyond me... if your usage is so low, you dont really need 2 Mbps and you dont need to invest in the modem, etc. A dial up line should doing your job for you... lol! My guess is BSNL is trying to show more broad band users in its statistics... but users who have this kind of usage dont really need broad band in the first place!! Cheap tricks!
  2. Do Not Disturb Policy

Hmm... that DND facility was REALLY useful! With that facility you can stop recieving calls without switching off your phone. Really, really useful when you want to use your phone for music or texting, etc... while not being disturbed by pesky calls... I used to use it a lot in the earlier days of my stint with Reliance. But they suddenly withdrew that facility too! Anybody has any idea why they withdrew it... or does RCom just do things at whim...?? Does any other operator provide this facility?
  3. You gotta be joking! 150 MB would be insufficient even for email, methinks... Besides, Im sure its 150 MB upload + download.... you your ACTUAL usage would be even lower!
  4. A VERY dirty joke at that...
  5. Copyright Infringement Letter

Could you tell us what exactly you might have downloaded to trigger this letter? And thru what mode... I mean which P2P client? Why don't you try a filtering software like peerguardian? Its supposed to make things difficult for prying eyes... not sure how useful/important it will be in the Indian context though...
  6. Help Me In Writing A Cd

Instead of XP CD wizards, etc, why not just try WMP? WMP 11 (not sure about earlier versions) makes a WPL playlist by default. You can get it to make an M3U instead. You could choose fromt he playlist how you want the songs to be played. Overall, I dont like Winamp... but thats my personal feeling... You can rename/number the songs as Vishal said, but then with that method you wont be able to change the playing order later, if you wish to. However, I guess you would be still able to do it, if you make a playlist of those files later...
  7. Reliance Vs Bsnl Wll

But BSNL WLL is supposed to work only within city limits, right? Then were is the question of coverage? I had used it for a short while in Poona (for voice calls... it did not have data that time) couple years back... and the in-city coverage was GOOD!
  8. Hathway Launched 512kbps At Rs.550/-

Well, in the end, whatever connection you take, please do test the speed to see if you are getting what you are promised! People will usually fight tooth and nail if they get 11 oranges instead of a dozen! But v v few people seem to even test their conn speeds! Strange!! Also, you should check for packet loss... because if that is high, the speed reading you get wont be of much use! The Hathway connection I had suffered from an fantastic amount of packet loss!
  9. Hathway Launched 512kbps At Rs.550/-

I agree entirely... In fact I wouldnt want to touch their services even if they paid me for it! It was one of the sickest experiences I'v had. And they NEVER ever owned up either... they had the cheek to blame me and my comp for ALL the problems... saying that absolutely no other customer has any problems with their connections. They have not even refunded the money (had to pay 6 months advance that time, to get installation charge waiver) after disconnecting the service... Also, sometime back I had read about some horror stories in Banglore (if I remember correct) of hathway connections burning down comps and tvs (cable connections) to a cinder... due to voltage surges! BEWARE OF HATHWAY!
  10. What Can I Do For This

Dude, why make this complicated? Just buy a new Mobo and processor and RAM. New mobos have ethernet cards, graphics cards and all built in. As a very approx cost, you should be able to get something more current for 5 - 8 k. Maybe less... am not aware of the latest hardware prices... they keep changing rapidly anyway. As suggested by ss rakesh, you should definitely be able to use your monitor, speakers, etc. For a better looking comp, just change the cabinet! Monitor, keyboard is another issue though...
  11. Are you sure? At least in Mah circle they have STV for LT... at least its on their website.
  12. Hathway Launched 512kbps At Rs.550/-

Beware of Hathway... had a really horrible experience with them here in Poona. Dont know if its any better in Bombay ...worse it cant be... cus that is what it already is, here!
  13. What Can I Do For This

I'd agree. No point in installing XP on such a low spec PC. 98 with bit more RAM will be much faster... you'll only have to deal with the compatability issues with software ...and the security threat. As for the HDD, i suggest you 1st check if you have UDMA enabled first...
  14. What Can I Do For This

Normally, if you install faster RAM together with slower RAM, the faster RAM will work at the slower RAM's speed. But of course the new RAM has to be compatible with your motherboard (check your manual). Considering your low end specs, AVG WILL slow down your comp! When you are working on a low spec rig, every bit of RAM and CPU cycle matters. As I mentioned before, I cant recall till what limit 98 addresses RAM effectively... please check that up before you upgrade to 256 MB!!! Otherwise you can try what Honest suggested... dump 98 and install XP and then install 256 MB RAM. But then remember that 256 MB RAM isnt quite enough for XP. You will have a relatively slow XP system! As for DVD writers... just check the minimum system requirements on the DVD players box. I cant recall the specs. Even if the hardware specs are ok, I feel you may run into problems with 98 there too. Most DVD burning software may not work on your slow system... Nero for eg. ...the new version is amongst the worst resource hog. But I guess you should be able to find alternative software...
  15. Problem with these daily rentals is that its difficult to keep a v accurate track of your balance... Id rather have them deduct the whole amt once a month... or once a fortnight... rather than daily!
  16. What Can I Do For This

4 GB????? No way you should install so much RAM (or anywhere close!) on a Win 98 machine! Win 98 is not good at handling RAM beyond some limit... It will actually slow down your system instead of making it faster! I cant recall what the limit is... see if someone here can remember... or try to find it online. Ahere are a LOT of tweaks you can do to make your system run faster... cant get into all that right now... But one of the most important things is to make sure that your system loads absolutely nothing thats not absolutely required, at startup. One of the most significant problems you will face on a 98 system is security. I believe 98 is no longer supported by MS. Also, I dont think any current firewall will run on your system without severely slowing down your system. You will prolly have to go for a really older version... which is bound to have holes... Also, you have a very limited choice for anti viruses. I suggest Dr. Web or F-Prot... as far as I can remember, they can run on 98. They have an AMAZINGLY small footprint, and wont slow down your comp...
  17. What Can I Do For This

From what I can tell at a glance, with your kind of RAM, I dont think its feasable to run the latest versions of IM clients ...Yahoo is the worst resource hog. But there are alternative multi-network IM clients which can very easily work on your system... or even lower specs for that matter... like Miranda. However I'm not sure if you will be able to use the chat room functionality with these clients. Also your virtual memory seems to be ridiculously high for the physical RAM you have. I'd suggest you stop letting Win manage it... set it to a fixed limit. And preferably defragment it after that. There are many other things you can do to speed up your system. But Id also seriously suggest trying to get more RAM... if you can get compatible modules...
  18. Thanks KumaarShah... but somehow I just cant share your enthusiasm... at least not when u compare the tafiffs here... then of course there is the factor of pattern of use - I hardly make STD calls, and I seldom go into roaming. So those cards are not of much use... and i dont like the idea of having another a/c to keep tabs on... RCOM has a knack of making balances vanish after all... As for changing SIMs, unfortunately the RD2030 dosent have a RUIM slot. Thats another pain. Not to mention the poor batt life of most CDMA handsets... As of now I think I'll just buy new GSM SIMs to make out going calls ot non local Idea nos. Makes a lot more sense as you get more talktime value than the cost of the new SIM itself (as mentioned above)! As Im only going to use this for outgoing calls, number changes dont really matter...
  19. Motorola V9m Having Network Problems

Had this problem pretty frequently for the last few months I was with Reliance. It was almost definitely a network problem...
  20. Hey, thanks so much for the fast and detailed reply! Actually, right now I'm on Idea's I-card plan. So while I pay 10p for Idea-Idea calls (in happy hrs), calls to other mobiles are relatively more expensive @ Re. 1. So I was thinking of activating my old RD2030, which is still going great guns... but only if it gives 50p calling rates with no rentals. Now question is you are in Madras... so are these STVs valid for LT even in Maharashtra circle? Couple of shops told me you cant use STVs on LT in Reliance... I dont know why you say "I think there is no one to match RCOM in LT and prepaid for once. Atleast currently" because both Idea and Vodaphone have STVs that you can use on lifetime connections to reduce the rate to around 50p. In fact someone I know got a 6 month STV offer for his LT Idea connection where monthly charge works out to around 25 - 30 bucks or so... (cant recall exact amount). Btw, I just got an irresistible offer - an Idea Friendz SIM for Rs. 180 with Rs. 250 talk time & 9 months validity!!! This is way cool... and you can load an STV to use it to make calls at 50p also (plan would change to Airtel One) and way better than any offer from RCom. Even other GSM ops are giving new SIMs with more talk time than the cost of the SIM!!! At this rate it might make more sense for me to keep getting new SIMs when they expire... esp. since I have a spare GSM handset for the job!!
  21. Hey dudes... sorry been outta touch with Reliance for sometime... Can someone tell me conclusively tell me if you can use STVs to reduce the calling rate (to 50p or whatever) in this lifetime voucher? If yes which STVs? As usual I'm getting conflicting answers from everywhere. If yes, I can consider reviving my old warhorse RD 2030 which has been lying dormant since I fled from RCom...
  22. Cdma Vs Gsm

This is strange... we have been told that CDMA phones emit less radiation. In fact Tata has advertised this fact in the past! Im sure many here know what Im talking about, so wont elaborate... Furthermore, about CDMA phones heating up, FWIW, my old RD2030 used to get just slightly warm even after a 1 hr conversation! In fact GSM phones too warm up slightly when used for speaking that long ...so In my personal experience, the heat difference was hardly even noticable. So I guess it might have more to do with the quality/design of the individual phone, rather than the technology used... As for batt life, yes, in my experience it seems that GSM phones have an edge here.
  23. Long-term Cell Users Risk Brain Tumour

I always thought that wired landlines have the best voice clarity?!?! At least thats been my experience. Have seldom used FWPs though. But in my experience the line is clearest when Im calling another BSNL lanline from my BSNL landline. A wired landline would also be the sefest bet wrt radiation, i reckon...
  24. Color Classic @ 999

Right, we should just stop cribbing and die silenty with brain tumours, and all... besides it will be a good method to control our burgeoning population too...
  25. Now You Can Block Calls For Rs 99!

So if you need to block out just one number you need to pay Rs. 99 ...expensive!!! In fact thats approximately equal to the monthly rental for many plans!! This facility BADLY needs to be implemented properly in handsets itself! Dunno why most call manufacturers are sleeping on this basic requirement!
