  1. As for signal intensity indoors.... in Poona, Airtel can be real bad indoors. Reliance on the other hand is good in that area. And so is Idea! Neither Reliance nor Idea have any problem indoors ...and u can usually carry on a good converstiaon even in most basements. Not so with Airtel. So I guess its not about whether GSM is better or CDMA ...both can be good depending on the network....
  2. Sound Card & Speakers

After my Mercury 2.1 conked out (bad quality overall ...but good sound) ...and after reading a lot of reviews I went and bought the Altec Lansing 121i (the only Altec model available which was cheaper than the ATP3 ...I didnt want to spend that much more). I was not satisfied with the sound at all ...and the dealer was ready to replace them with the ATP3, the next day. So thats what Im using currently. They are quite good. I would suggest not to go in for any Altec Lansing product less than ATP3. Or if you do, dont do it unless you have heard its sound output.
  3. Really??? My experience has been just the opposite! Both network and customer service has declined since ADA took over! As for the network in Poona... RIM is good for voice calls within city limits ...tho the network has declined in the past few months ...esp. since ADA took over! For SMS it sux in ALL ways. Outside city limits, on highways, hill stations, etc, coverage is BAD! U get absolutely no coverage in places like Panchgini, Mahabeleshwar, Narayangaon, on most highways, etc, etc. Not sure about other operators, but Idea has coverage at most of the places where RIM does not ...and is generally more reliable too.
  4. Well, both my Moto and Nokia GSM phones have 0 and 1 as 7th and 8th digit. But the box says Moto is manufactured in Singapore and Nokia in China...
  5. Also, operators should not be allowed to charge processing fee for top-ups (for pre-paid). Its preposterous to have to pay additional charges when you already have validity and have paid the "rental" (or fixed charges) once! Charging processing fees when you have validity means that you are in effect paying a much higher "rental"!
  6. Blackberry Launch

Its the same here in Poona. The network is just not what it used to be. At least that was the case till 3-4 months ago, when I was still using my RIM. Worst of all are the SMS problems and callers dont even get to hear a msg informing about the status of the phone, when a connection cant be made (for whatever reason).
  7. Invites Thread

Gids, have sent you a Demonoid invite in a pvt. msg.
  8. Phones Burst, Panic Spreads

As we all know, Tata does not make any phones! Would be of intrest to know what the actual make of the phone was! Also, was the Samsung that exploded have an original Samsung batt?
  9. I cant hold myself from laughing. Spice no sync. It really feels bad when we switch from 6700 to such stupid phone, That is because of stupid reliance policy not to allow phones from others on their network. I used airtel for 7 days buying prepaid connection and borrowing phone from frnd, it is really inferior as compared to reliance in terms of quality of sound. If reliance really start accepting any CDMA handsets on their network, I believe reliance could be nmber one in no time. The same is true here in Poona. Airtel is awful for voice calls ...call drops galore and frequently very poor voice quality. But for SMSing it rocks ...and RIM has always been problematic with SMS. But inspite of the problems with voice, Almost half my addr book has Airtel numbers ...the other half being Idea, a couple of hutch nuumbers and ZERO Reliance or Tata numbers! Nobody I know wants to touch a RIM at at any cost ...despite it being much better for voice, than Airtel! Blame it mainly on RCLs policies ...lame handsets, all kinds of problems with texting, and bad tariffs, etc... Though I got rid of my Airtel couple months ago and got an Idea SIM, Im seriously considering getting another connection for my 2nd phone as it used to help me save a packet due to 10p onnet calling tariffs...
  10. R World Rate

Whats strange in that??? It fits the current RCL's new paradigm - think better, think bigger (ARPUs)...
  11. Vodafone Gears Up For Launch

If this is true, then it sounds almost nightmarish!!! Imagine just one scenario: the handset goes kaput (and since quality might be suspect, its not unlikely)... so you wont be able to use the SIM on another handset, even if you have one! You would be totally at the mercy of the service center/operator ...and may not have a working phone number for days! A totally unacceptable model, at least for me ...no matter at what price.
  12. Call Duration For All Dialed Calls..

This has already been discussed in another thread. It seems no Nokia phone is implementing this basic functionality ...not even their GSM phones! Very convinent for our telcos... I don't think there is any application or handset option with which you can get this function.
  13. Not just RIM ...most operators are offering much cheaper on-net calls. It will be much more difficult to ascertain the operator after number portablity ...and will lead to some inconvinence. But I guess it will be more than offset by the convinence and advantages of being able to always maintian one number! But we will really need some other system where we can ascertain which operator we are calling... I hope the authorites realise this.
  14. Reliance Netconnect: Data Card Vs. Usb Modem

Reliance the Un-Reliable ...we all know that here ...nothing new in that. But whats strange is that why do people still give their precious monies to people who dont even give a bill? And this after knowing that they are dealing with one of the most un-reliable operators in the land!
  15. Unless CDMA operators make their texting capablities as slick as GSM operators and have comparable handsets and facilities, with more flexiblity ...like for eg. RIM allowing Tata handsets and vice versa, I wouldn't want to touch CDMA again.
  16. Its good they are replacing the batts but look what they did in my case - doggedly refused to replace my Nokia GSM handset (even after I made a considerable fuss) even though it was defective outta the box ...and they failed to repair it successfully even after 2 attempts! And I dont know how you can say it is Matsu****a that is solely responsible... we as customers only know the brand "Nokia" ...and I'd say its ONLY Nokia that is responsible ...though of course internally for them the entitity to blame may differ! But we as customers are NOT concerned with that! Anyway, its good they are replacing the batts ...but they should never have reached the market... so I wouldnt eulogise Nokia for that! Perhaps Motto and LG never released such stuff into the market ...so they never had to do the recall fiasco! Perhaps this might even be a Nokia stunt to gain cheap publicity ...and it seems to be having the desired effect on some people... Who knows whats the reality...
  17. Handset Buying Advice For Office/ General Usage

Too many expectation from Reliance and its junk hardware... Lol. You will have a tough time finding what you need... esp. the battery life issue ...since your usage is high. Better think about GSM! Loads of choices there. FYIW not all LG CDMA handsets have heating issues. And recently some models with "enhanced" battries were launched (cant recall the models) ...but I dont know if you will find them easily in the market ...as it seems RCL is just intrested in promoting Classics now...
  18. Share ur RIM Numbers...

Lol ...I never said anything about Idea Cellular! Look again - I'v typed "idea" not "Idea"! You could consider Tata ...they seem to have good SMS packs. Dont know about plans in Guj circle though. Im sure other operators also must have good SMS packs...
  19. Share ur RIM Numbers...

What can you do...? You can party that RCL is giving you a damn good reason to dump them and get a better plan and service elsewhere..... Howz that for an idea?
  20. Pc Or Laptop?

If portablity is not really required than a desktop is way better than a laptop for several reasons. The most important factor for me is that I can asseble the rig with the best known components ...and also maintain it myself. I dont know about chennai ...but I'v had a VERY, VERY bad experience with Hathway here in Poona. Im currently using BSNL and while it works it rocks (downtime is almost nil) ...but support is very bad.
  21. Ya, a friend just told me that dlinks can have in-built splitters. If you are not able to use your phone and net simultaneously there is certainly something wrong with your modem/splitter. Until you can get another modem it wont hurt to try using your connection with ONLY the modem connected (remove any phone instruments, etc).
  22. Apparently your phone instrument is connected in serial (not parallel) with the ADSL modem. And its VERY pecular that your net connection comes to a halt while you are making a voice call! An ADSL connection can and does carry voice and data signals simultaneously. So using your phone should make absolutely no difference to the net connection. Did you try using your connection after removing the phone instrument? In the absense of tech assistance from MTNL you could try getting a splitter from somewhere (preferably from MTNL itself) and see how your connection performs after connecting it correctly...
  23. Well, dial-up modems connect the way you have describled ...but havent heard that an ADSL modem has a line-out for a phone! What is the make of your modem? Im just wondering if your modem has the splitter circuitry built into itself... Since you say you dont have a splitter, it might be worthwhile to remove your phone instrument and connect the phone line ONLY to your modem ...and then see if there is any performance improvement.
  24. Splitter is a small box shaped thingy which seperates the frequencies in the tel line - one for the voice and other for the ADSL line. It is important that nothing is connected to the tel line before the splitter.
  25. Well, a LOT of Nokia users wont accept that a Nokia can have ANY problems! When I hear these people (friends/collegues, etc) I sometimes feel that Nokia is only giving us dimbulb Indians what we deserve...
