BlackBerry maker co-CEOs step down Source TORONTO – BlackBerry maker Research in Motion's co-CEOs, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, announced Sunday they would step down as co-CEOs of the once-iconic company that has struggled to compete in recent years. By Oliver Lang, AP Research In Motion's most famous device is the Blackberry smartphone. Enlarge By Oliver Lang, AP Research In Motion's most famous device is the Blackberry smartphone. The RIM founders will be replaced by Thorsten Heins, a chief operating officer who joined RIM four years ago from Siemens AG, RIM said. The Canadian company turned the e-mail smartphone into a ubiquitous device that many could not live without, but U.S. users have moved on to flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and various competing models that run Google's Android software. RIM has suffered a series of setbacks and has lost tens of billions in market value. RIM said last month that new phones deemed critical to the company's future would be delayed until late this year. And its PlayBook tablet, RIM's answer to the Apple iPad, failed to gain consumer support, forcing the company to deeply discount it to move the devices off store shelves. Many shareholders and analysts have said a change or sale of the company has been needed, but the sudden departure of the two founders wasn't expected despite their promises that they would examine the co-CEO and co-chairmen structure. Associated Press Research In Motion co-CEOs Jim Balsillie, left, and Mike Lazaridis. The company on Sunday said they are stepping down and will be replaced by Thorsten Heins, a chief operating officer who joined RIM four years ago. Balsillie and Lazaridis have long been celebrated as Canadian heroes, even appearing in the country's citizenship guide for new immigrants as models of success. They have headed Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM together for the past two decades. "There comes a time in the growth of every successful company when the founders recognize the need to pass the baton to new leadership. Jim and I went to the board and told them that we thought that time was now," Lazaridis said in a statement. Lazaridis will take on a new role as vice chairman of RIM's board and chairman of the board's new innovation committee. Balsillie remains a member of the board. "I agree this is the right time to pass the baton to new leadership, and I have complete confidence in Thorsten, the management team and the company," Balsillie said in the statement. "I remain a significant shareholder and a director and, of course, they will have my full support." A company that was worth more than $70 billion a few years ago now has a market value of $8.9 billion. Analysts have said RIM's future depends on its much-delayed new software platform as RIM has tried and failed to reinvigorate the BlackBerry. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs said in late 2010 that RIM would have a hard time catching up to Apple because RIM has been forced to move beyond its area of strength and into unfamiliar territory of trying to become a software platform company. Heins said Lazaridis and Balsillie took RIM in the right direction and said he's committed to the new software. "We are more confident than ever that was the right path. It is Mike and Jim's continued unwillingness to sacrifice long-term value for short-term gain which has made RIM the great company that it is today. I share that philosophy and am very excited about the company's future," Heins said. Barbara Stymiest, a former chief operating officer of the Royal Bank of Canada who has been a member of RIM's board since 2007, has been named the independent board chair. RIM also named a new board member, Prem Watsa, the chief executive of Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd.

Teacher left stunned after finding Rs 490 billion bank balance Source A teacher in India got the shock of his life when he checked his bank account online and found 490 billion rupees (9.8 billion dollars) Parijat Saha could not believe his eyes when a check at an ATM confirmed his billionaire status, on paper at least. The honest man rang the State Bank of India (SBI) to point out the error. Red-faced bank officials would not comment, but sources claim that the funds were "uncleared" and he could not have withdrawn the money if he had tried. Saha's monthly salary as a school teacher in the eastern state of West Bengal is 35,000 rupees (700 dollars). His account balance of 9.8 billion dolars is closer to India's annual education budget of 11.5 billion dollars. "On Sunday evening, when I was checking my savings account balance on the internet, I was expecting an amount of a little more than 10,000 rupees (200 dollars)," The BBC quoted Saha, who lives in the town of Balurghat in South Dinajpur district as saying. "I called up a friend in the bank and joked, maybe money is overflowing in your bank, that's why your system has remitted so much money into my account," he said. The government-run bank with the motto "Safe Banking with SBI", has not explained what happened. Subhashish Karmakar, chief manager of the bank's branch in Balurghat, declined to speak about the source of the funds or how the money got into Saha's account. "I have been specifically asked not to comment on this issue," Karmakar said. The bank's regional headquarters in Calcutta and national headquarters in Mumbai have been alerted and officials are trying to figure out what went wrong, sources in the bank revealed. Saha said that he has managed to withdraw the 200 dollars from his account that belonged to him. "Even though I got my money back, the account still holds the billions of dollars as uncleared amount. "I don't know how long I'll have to keep that astronomical figure in my account," he added.

^^^ fro FTP, you may have to open a port. By default, FTP port is 21 but it is very risky to open this port. you throw open your gates for hackers and all malware attacks. better to use different port. these settings can be done on the router itself. -
Steve Wozniak says he loves android phone over his iPhone 4S. he is the guy who was 1st in Q for 4S. Why the Smartphone Wars Will End in a Stalemate Source Speaking toThe Daily Beast, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak just laid out the difference, clear as day: "The people I recommend the iPhone 4S for are the ones who are already in the Mac world, because it's so compatible, and people who are just scared of computers altogether and don't want to use them. The iPhone is the least frightening thing. For that kind of person who is scared of complexity, well, here's a phone that is simple to use and does what you need it to do." Did Woz just call you a simpleton? Right on, Woz. The iPhone is pretty to look at and very uncluttered. Every operation is stripped down to the simplest possible version of it; there's no confusion. For a lot of consumers, that's exactly the right solution. But that design philosophy leaves you in the cold if you actually know what you want to do with a smartphone. The iPhone 4S is Wozniak's main phone, but he needs a nice Android to fill out Apple's missing features. "I wish it did all the things my Android does, I really do," he says. For example, Woz is falling out of love withApple's Siri voice assistantbecause it just isn't as helpful as the voice control on his . Coming from someone as enmeshed in the Apple story as Wozniak, that's harsh criticism. In fact, he says Siri was a better assistant before Apple bought the company behind it. A report from the other side I'm looking at the rivalry from the other side. Having used an Android phone for a couple of years, I was recently brought into the Apple fold when my wife asked for an iPod Touch for Christmas. What honey bunny wants, honey bunny gets (especially at a tremendous 37% Black Friday discount). So there we go, and I have no desire to use her shiny new toy. I'm so used to having fine-grained control over everything a smartphone-style gadget does that I'm lost on the iPod. Nothing happens when I'm doing the long clicks that usually bring up some kind of menu in Android apps. I miss the "back" and "menu" buttons. This geek wants to do stuff that the iPod won't let me, even in cross-platform apps I've been happy with before. This thing is actuallyharderto use, not easier -- if you're used to being in control. But the missus loves this simple model, and our cell-phone minutes last longer now that she has FaceTime in her hands. Not that Skype, Fring, or Google Talk couldn't have done the same thing, but all her friends were already caught in the Apple ecosystem, so it's FaceTime or nothing in this social circle. That's how Steve Jobs wanted his ecosystem to work, and it has clearly reached a critical mass. Shutting down iTunes, FaceTime, and all the other iStuff now would be like ripping the spine out of a living, breathing thing. Apple ain't going away anytime soon. So I live in a house divided. The iPod Touch and iPhone aren't what I want, but they're perfect for my better half. That story plays out in millions of households every day, which is why both systems are likely to keep on trucking whilelesser competitors rise and fall below them. The smartphone war is not a zero-sum game -- you can and will have more than one winner. Fool analysts have compileda short list of three surefire winners regardless of which platform proves more popular. This special report is completely free for a limited time, soget yours now.

This is amazing ultrabook from Lenovo. it cna used as tablet as well. Source CES 2012: Lenovo's Yoga Ultrabook is aptly named At last year's Consumer Electronics Show virtually every name brand computer company offered a tablet. That's pretty much the story at this year's event. But now much of the focus is on the ultrabook computers that started hitting stores less than four months ago. Chip giant Intel, the ultraforce behind ultrabooks, says more than 75 ultrabook designs are in the pipeline for 2012, on top of the 15 models already in the market. Among those that stood out to me among the 25 to 30 ultrabooks shown at CES — and models are here from Acer, Asus, HP, LG, Toshiba and Samsung — is the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga. On the one hand Yoga is a 3.1-pound Windows 8 ultrabook with a high-definition 13.3-inch display. But it has a 360-degree dual hinge "flip and fold" design that lets you convert the machine into a tablet, and is the reason for its apt name. Yoga has four different usage modes: You can rest it flat like any notebook. You can carry it in your hand like any tablet. You can prop it up as a stand. Or you can fold it so that it is in a tent position, useful, say, if you're reading or watching a video. In tablet mode Yoga felt a little odd to me because of the exposed keyboard on the bottom. You need not worry though about making something go haywire on the screen should you press those keys accidentally, since they're deactivated in that mode, and I suspect you would get used to it fairly quickly. Yoga is expected out during the second half of the year at a starting price of $1,199.

Motorola CEO confirms that carriers want Android differentiation. He said, in order to sale more, carriers wants different UI from different manufacturers. In other words, fragmentation should be there. It is clear that both manufacturers and carriers earn by having fragmented OS. Source

Lenovo Racer-A hands-on with Stephen Miller Source Here at CES 2012 during Showstoppers, we’ve been fortunate enough to get a personal interview with no less than Lenovo’s own Stephen Miller speaking all about the 1st IA platform smartphone based on the Intel Medfield chip, the Lenovo Racer-A SmartPhone. This device is part of the Idea Smart Phone K series and has a 4.5-inch 720p multi-touch display with fabulous viewing angles. This device is capable of playing back 1080p, 30 frames per second video – it’s also got a 720p wireless display, full 3D media center, and an 8M AF camera on the back. The processor is the real hero here as it is, believe it or not, a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Medfield SoC. This device will run Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread out of the box, WCDMA and HSPA+ connectivity, and LPDDR2 1GB + 32GB eMMC on the inside to keep you running quick and at the top of your game. The battery is 1890 mAh strong and will last the whole live-long day with the smartphone running a completely custom user interface over Android. This device is both light and relatively thin (or thick depending on who you’re talking to), and as you’ll notice – it’s got three Android capacitive buttons below the display. This smartphone has five home screens and its user interface is very similar to what we’ve seen with the Lenovo Android dual-core tablets of 2011, but the launcher is Lenovo’s newest for smartphones specifically. Playing video at full resolution, you’ll be able to scrub or jump to any moment without lag. You can connect straight to your Lenovo Smart TV via Wi-fi, streaming video over your home network. The camera is a dual-LED flash having 8 megapixels on the back with a 5 megapixel camera on the front – HD for both sides! The gallery application that comes with the device is unique in that it’s got a sort of 3D view to it, viewing images, zooming in and out with great ease and without a hitch. The ports on this device are thus: a microUSB port on the bottom right of the device, a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top, and that’s it. There’s also a speaker grille at the top along with the power/lock button, and the back of the device is removable along with the battery. Dual-Hyperthreading is being used on this device, taking all the bits of a process and making them work as effectively as possible, and the battery does not get eaten up while you process. The Intel Medfield chip makes all of this possible. This device is made to be an everywhere device, booting up in a matter of seconds and with details that make it great for education, business, and the home. Inside the device you’ll also find a compass, gyroscope, and GPS. This device is upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich, mind you, plans in the works for an eventual upgrade inside 2012 – though the interface will likely remain quite similar to what it is right this minute. This device will be released inside the second half of 2012 in the China market. We’ll have a much closer look at this device later this year when its much closer to release time – seeya then! -
congrats for the new car..

Toshiba’s New Excite X10 Tablet Is World’s Thinnest 10-Inch (For Now) Source So much excitement. This is my first CES and while MG may be correct to think that some of my fellow tech bloggers find this trip a tad tedious, I’m pink with barely controlled glee just from being here. But I’ve been excited about CES for a few weeks now, ever since I went to meet with Toshiba and get a sneak peek at their latest tablet. The Excite X10 is now the world’s thinnest 10-inch tablet, measuring in at just .3 inches thick and weighing just 1.2 lbs. But don’t forget that the iPad 3 is presumably just around the corner (along with quite a few Android slates this week), so anything can change. A brushed magnesium alloy finish graces its backside, with Corning Gorilla glass up front to prevent any scratching. It’s really a beauty. Under the hood you’ll find a TI OMAP 4420 1.2GHz dual-core processor along with 1GB of RAM. As far as the OS goes, however, Toshiba was a bit iffy. The tablet will either ship in mid Q1 with Android 3.2 Honeycomb, or a bit later with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather wait a bit longer for Ice Cream Sandwich. The 10-inch screen boasts a resolution of 1280×800, and is built with a special direct bonding technology that allows for such a thin profile. A 2-megapixel front-facing shooter is present and accounted for if you’re into video chat, and a 5-megapixel shooter can be found on the backside of the tab. Android tablets have been quite the flop in the past year (with the exception of the Kindle Fire, sort of), but I have a good feeling about 2012 Android slates if this is the type of stuff we’re going to see. Pricing is still unclear for this guy, but with its premium status I’d assume it’ll face off against the iPad more so than the Kindle Fire. (Note on images: Regza is the tablet’s Asian name, and won’t appear on U.S. units)
