Tough negotiator: HP wanted $1.2B for webOS and Palm’s assets (exclusive) Source $1.2 billion. That’s how much HP paid for Palm last year, and it’s also how much the company was trying to sell its Palm assets for over the latter half of 2011, VentureBeat has learned. As baffling as it may seem, HP was trying to rid itself of Palm without taking a loss on its purchase, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told us. When asked for confirmation about the pricing, an HP representative declined to comment. The company seemingly ignored that Palm’s value had fallen significantly since HP purchased the smartphone pioneer in April 2010, thanks to the spectacular failure of the HP Touchpad tablet. And the fact that HP didn’t make any progress with its new webOS phones, the Pre 3 and Veer, didn’t help either. It’s no wonder then that HP failed to find a suitor for Palm, after having discussions with Amazon, Samsung, Intel, and many others. HP eventually decided to open source webOS, allowing it to take advantage of the platform in the future without the need to allocate resources to keep it alive. HP CEO Meg Whitman said the company still plans to develop new webOS tablets in 2012. It’s possible that HP eventually lowered its asking price for Palm, but it likely would have had to fall below $500 million for any company to consider snapping it up. We’ve also heard that HP was asking for continued access to webOS for use in its printers, something that would have only scared away potential suitors. The $1.2 billion asking price shines some light on a story we heard from another source: At one point, HP’s team tried to pitch the sale to Facebook but was practically laughed out of the room. At first, I attributed that story to Facebook’s side being a bit obnoxious, but I can’t blame them if HP was indeed asking $1.2 billion. And yes, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was present at the meeting, although he apparently didn’t say much (I’m sure whatever he was thinking at the time would have been gold). At this point, it seems that HP is either a terrible negotiator or never really wanted to let go of webOS in the first place.

Italy fines Apple for misleading consumers Source: (AFP) ROME — Italy's anti-trust authority said Tuesday it was imposing a 900,000-euro ($1.2-million) fine on US tech giant Apple for misleading consumers on assistance services and guarantees for its products. "Sanctions of a total of 900,000 euros have been imposed on the Apple group after it was found responsible for bad commercial practices that harmed consumers," the agency said in a statement. Apple had given "unclear information on payments for additional assistance offered to consumers" and the company had not "fully implemented the two-year guarantee by the producer," it added. European antitrust officials earlier this month launched a probe to determine whether Apple and five international publishers struck illegal deals to fix the price of e-books in Europe. Apple has also come under pressure from a bitter global legal battle with South Korean electronics giant Samsung, which accuses the US giant of infringing four of its patents with the iPhone. Apple reported a record net profit of $6.62 billion (5.06 billion euros) in the third quarter of this year.

American cars require heavy maintenance. while eauropeans are expensive to service and parts, add about Rs 1 or 2 per km. Japanese are most reasonable in all terms.

@Nitin any specific reason for Chevy beat? if price is only criteria then no other option. otherwise, with about 1lakh more you can get swift and Liva with 1.25(ex-showroom) or so. you may get free service for three years, but then engine and is not that good and maintenance is high for chevy compare to others.

University of California Berkeley (UCB) recently evaluated two major online apps in order upgrade/migrate its current email an dother system. It evaluated Googel Apps and MS Office 365. Shockingly, Office 365 was found to be more secure than Google Apps. However university chose Google due to its simplicity, familiarity as many students and professors use Gmail. The article is good for knowledge. The simplicity, familiarity and low implementation time lead decision in Google;s favor. Here is the entire comparison between the two:

I am starting this topic to discuss the adverse effects of SMS/BBM. While going through the article on BBC, about how Volkswagen switches off BB server for its employees after work hours. It is not applicable for top management though. The article states that its affecting personal life and also overall efficiency of the employees. Now this is the main reason why I started this topic. Here I want to discuss whether it is really true or just an hype created by co to attract manpower. Whatever may be the case. But I have seen people who are stuck to their cell phone whether BB or any other 24x7. There are 3 categories, one by compulsion ie top management (including businessmen/self-employed) and working class, second one is status and third GenX. The businessmen and working class do it by compulsion and to some extent to feed their ego. They are always connected to the office in one or the other way. There also people who want to show off that how busy they are and always talking or doing something on the phone. These people get immense pleasure in showing how busy they are. They also try to make others feel inferior. GenX, teenagers are the worse. With BBM or Whatsapp or SMS, they cant get rid off phone. even they discuss everything in via text. For them voice is very uncool. each of them are now suffering from one or the other problem. businessmen loose their cool even before their SMS reaches the other side. The second category failed to connect and GenX simply lost their command over language and can't even write in simple English without using SMS lingo. They do not realise the long term hazards. The days are not far when people will start suffering from disease like "Finger cancer". Few years back, on Discovery channel had shown that egg was boiled when kepy between 2 cell phones for 45 minutes. Recently, a man was operated for cyst due to SMSing too much. I have seen teenagers, tecting while driving. They will wait for their car to stop at signal and start SMSing. They will chat with any dam person with whom otherwise they will rarely talk. Its good socialising but not good for health. This is increasing stress on all of them. I want to say we should encourage people to reduce the use and look at other ways to communicate and reduce stress. I have pasted the article below. If you read the article and the comments on the site, most agree that it has become nuisance than a facilitator. MODS: if you/anyone feel this is irrelevant, then you may close it.

I am looking for good data/net card for my colleague. he is in marketing and always on the move. till date he was using his phone but then it is now hampering his work and also some "feel good factor" that I need to provide him this card. there should be good connectivity across country, mainly in Mumbai, Gujarat (Vapi/Valsad other industrial area), Maharashtra, Goa and Chhattisgarh not inclined any particular service provider. but somebody told me that RCOM has issue of virus. Monthly donwload/upload abt 5GB max and expens about Rs 800 or so. can be +/- 200. Speed should be at least 2Mbps. please suggest data card brand (huwaie/ZTE etc) and service provider also. I found RCOM has better plans and good coverage compare to others. but if somebody can comment on virus issue, then buy it. or anyone can suggest good deal.

Microsoft “kicked out” of CES keynote claims insider Source Microsoft’s decision that CES 2012 will see the company’s final keynote and booth at the January show may not have been as amicable as the press releases suggest, with suggestions that the company was “kicked out” of its keynote slot. According to GigaOm‘s insiders in Microsoft, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) that runs the tech show each year decided it no longer wanted the company to hold a keynote session, and in retaliation Microsoft yanked its booth plans. “Microsoft didn’t pull out of the keynote – they were kicked out. Big difference” the insider is quoted as saying, though with it being anonymous it’s difficult to say exactly how accurate this all is. The CEA has declined to comment on the rumors, though it did issue a statement about the Microsoft news yesterday: “In the fourteen years that we have invited Microsoft to deliver a keynote address at CES, the company has unveiled some great innovations, from operating systems to gaming platforms to mobile technologies. Both CEA and Microsoft have agreed that the time has come to end this great run, and so Microsoft will not have a keynote at the 2013 CES … Microsoft has also informed us that, although their plans for the 2013 CES are not yet finalized, they will not request the Central Hall exhibit space that they have used in past years” CEA The final keynote itself sounds more whimper than bang, with Microsoft confirming that it would be more of a recap of the gaming, mobile and PC news of the moment than a last-ditch attempt to make serious headlines. That means there “won’t be significant news, but more of a wrap up of the strong year the company has had in consumer.” Update: The plot thickens, with The Verge‘s sources claiming the split was less ferocious than this, and basically amounted to CEA looking for a longer commitment to future shows and keynotes than Microsoft wanted. “Microsoft simply didn’t feel it was getting a reasonable return on its investment with CES” it’s said.

One more suite against Android. This time British Telecom using google. Source: PC World BT Files Patent Suit Against Google British Telecommunications has filed a civil suit in a Delaware court alleging that some Google products and services including Android, and its search, music, map, and location-based advertising infringe on one or more of six of its patents. The British company entered a prayer on Thursday before the United States District Court for the District of Delaware for an injunction against Google, as well as unspecified damages, which could be tripled if proven that Google's alleged infringement of the patents was willful and deliberate. BT has also asked for a trial by jury. The BT patents said to have been infringed include service provision system for communication networks, navigation information system, storage and retrieval of location based information in a distributed network of data storage devices, telecommunications apparatus and method, and communications node for providing network based information services. Google Music and Android were cited by BT as examples of Google's violation of U.S. Patent No. 6,151,309 for service provision system for communication networks, also referred to in the suit as the Busuioc patent. This patent is "directed to systems and methods for accessing content in a mobile environment where network constraints vary across networks". Intellectual property analyst Florian Mueller wrote in his blog that with so many major patent holders asserting their rights, obligations to pay royalties may force Google to change its Android licensing model and pass royalties on to device makers. Android is at the center of a number of patent disputes involving large companies including Oracle and Apple. Google was not immediately available for comment on the suit.

Nissan started booking for Sunny Diesel. Expected delivery date is 8th Jan 2012.. Source: Nissan India Wed Site 2011 12 12 : NISSAN LAUNCHES SUNNY DIESEL IN INDIA The new variants offer one of the best in class fuel efficiency and power Mumbai/Chennai, December 12, 2011: Nissan Motor India Private Ltd. (NMIPL) today started booking of the diesel variant of its hugely successful mid-sized sedan, the Nissan Sunny, in India. Available in two variants, the XL and the XV, the India-built Sunny Diesel is amongst ‘best in class’ in terms of fuel efficiency and targets the fast growing demand for diesel cars in the Indian market. The petrol variant of the Sunny was launched last September, and received wide critical acclaim from auto experts who viewed it as the best entry-level petrol sedan in India. Now the Diesel variant is set to significantly boost Nissan’s presence in the crucial sedan sector and further support Nissan’s wider expansion within India. And customers have plenty of choice over the look of their new Sunny as the model is available in a palette of six colors – Bronze Grey, Blade Silver, Storm White, Sapphire Blue, Onyx Black and Brick Red. Sunny Diesel is competitively priced and will be available for Rs 7,98,000 (XL) and Rs 8,78,000 (XV), ex-showroom, New Delhi. Customers can now book the car at Nissan dealerships across the country. Departing from the industry norm, Nissan has adopted a uniform pan-India pricing strategy, whereby the ex-showroom price of the Sunny Diesel will remain the same across all states. The only variations will be in terms of VAT, Entry Tax, Octroi and other local taxes levied by states/cities. The Sunny Diesel, a result of significant inputs from the Indian market and powered by the Renault Nissan Alliance’s highly regarded K9K diesel engine, has a fuel efficiency of 21.64 kmpl (ARAI certified) and is ideal for both city driving as well as exploring the countryside. Built at the Nissan plant in Chennai, the diesel variant is powered by a modern 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder K9K engine delivering 86PS of power @ 3750 rpm and a maximum torque of 200 Nm @ 2000 rpm. The smooth five speed manual transmission helps to provide both fuel efficiency and a powerful, engaging drive. Mr. Kiminobu Tokuyama, Managing Director & CEO, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd, said, “We are delighted to introduce the diesel variant of Sunny for the Indian market. We are currently witnessing a significant and sustained increase in demand for diesel cars across India and we are confident Sunny’s blend of technology, performance and fuel economy will prove extremely popular with our growing customer base – it’s the right car at the right time for India.” Mr. G M Singh, Vice Chairman & MD, Hover Automotive India, Nissan’s Marketing & Sales partner said, “Sunny’s introduction is another major milestone in Nissan’s rapid expansion in India - one of the fastest growing markets in the world. The fact that we have already achieved over 3000 sales for the Petrol variant of Sunny reinforces our belief that innovative and exiting products appeal strongly to our Indian customers.” Aimed at India’s fast-growing group of young professionals, the Sunny Diesel mirrors the petrol variant’s sophisticated style and roomy interior. It is the second model after the Micra hatchback to use Nissan’s flexible ‘V’ platform. The ‘V’, or Versatile, platform implements Nissan’s advanced engineering to deliver a modern, light weight structure, that provides integral strength, ride refinement and dynamic on-road behavior. The Sunny Diesel carries high levels of active and passive safety features and technology designed to enhance both the driving and ownership experience. These include Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Engine Immobilizer and Airbags. Sunny Diesel – High on Style The front of Sunny Diesel is dominated by Nissan’s signature grille, which is flanked by jewel-shaped headlines with discreet but elegant chrome touches. Wide opening doors offer better passenger ingress and egress while muscular haunches, stylish curves and a neat rear spoiler adds a sporty touch to the silhouette. The diesel variant is 4425mm long with a 2600mm wheelbase that provides Sunny with its roomy interior. It offers rear-knee room that is on par with luxury sedans even allowing passengers to cross their legs in comfort. The large central armrest with cup holders adds a touch of luxury while the roomy 490 Liter trunk, illuminated with a boot lamp, provides loads of luggage space. Independent front MacPherson struts with coil springs delivers a smooth ride while the compact torsion beam rear axle further minimizes intrusion into the luggage area. Sub-frame mounted suspensions and anti-roll bars at both ends help reduce road noise and vibration. The long-travel suspension kits allow Sunny Diesel to respond immediately to even the most challenging of road surfaces.
