GPS is not working and I even found prob with battery. battery drains faster than before. In fact I faced battery problem on various GB leaked ROMs.

anybody got OTA? besides GPS, an other problem faced?

@vinayak i doubt about mileage you have mentioned. you have used same mileage for petrol and diesel. besides, with recent prices, cabs are more economical in Mumbai when compare to petrol cars. i don't know about other cities, but should be true.

USB Print Server For Samsung All In One SCX-4521F
csmart replied to manujgupta's topic in General Technical Discussion
the simplest and most affordable way is to connect the printer to a PC and then share it. everybody on network can print by sharing. The only problem is that PC to which the printed is connected should remain on. I am using these since ages. There are many print servers. Once I used IOgear print server with HP printer. Many times PCs won't shut down and then stopped using it. -
Report: HP Puts WebOS On the Auction Block Source Hewlett-Packard is in the market to sell its WebOS operating system for "hundreds of millions of dollars," according to a report. Reuters reported late Monday that it had four sources confirming the report, but didn't say if they were at HP. Reuters did not name any potential suitors, although it did say that single source had told the wire that Oracle might be interested as a potential suitor. Many more companies saw the WebOS division as attractive, if only because of the division's patents. HP declined to comment. "We have no new comment with the Reuters report," an HP spokeswoman said. "We have said all along 'we are exploring ways to optimize the webOS software'. Nothing has changed." A sale would contradict an earlier report by The Guardian that the WebOS unit could be shut down instead of being sold off. HP acquired smartphone and PDA maker Palm and its Palm OS mobile operating system under the auspices of then-CEO Mark Hurd, who planned to integrate the renamed webOS across a slew of HP products to tie the computing giant's vast array of servers, PCs, mobile devices, printers, and other hardware products together to better offer total HP solutions to its business customers. On the consumer end of things, HP built its short-lived TouchPad tablet around webOS, releasing that device this past July during the term of Hurd's successor, Leo Apotheker, before announcing the end of its TouchPad line less than two months later due to poor sales. That device quickly became a bestseller after HP cut the price in a last-minute fire sale. Since then, HP has offered bundles to rid itself of TouchPad inventory, although ordering a new batch. Apotheker, ousted for bungling the TouchPad and other mistakes perceived to have led to disappointing quarterly performances during his tenure, said before his departure that in addition to ending the TouchPad, HP was considering putting its entire billion-dollar Personal Systems Group (PSG) on the block as well in its effort to transition towards a more services-and-software-oriented portfolio. Former eBay CEO and one-time California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman took over for Apotheker last month. Whitman has for all intents and purposes rescinded HP's offer to put the PC business on the block.

Panasonic Toughpad A1 and Toughpad B1 Android tablets revealed Source This week the folks at Panasonic have revealed one tablet and named a second, the first being the Toughpad A1, a 10.1-inch Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet with a processor from no less than Marvell, the most elusive chipmaker of all. Of course Marvell has appeared in mobile devices before, but the last time we spoke about them in regards to a mobile device was in the Vizio Tablet, then before that was aChinese smartphone and on the Chumby 8. Here we see Marvell sitting inside the tablet with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, this aside 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a microSD card slot for expansion up to 32GB more. The reason the two tablets being announced today are called Toughpad, or at least the reason why the A1 is called a Toughpad, is that it’s got a 4-foot MIL-STD-810G drop rating, operating temperatures between 14 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit, and resistance to dust and water ingress. We’ll see about that! In addition, the A1 tablet is a massive 2.13 pounds heavy, has a stylus pen, and has front and rear-facing cameras of unnamed size. There’s a “serviceable” battery inside, and you’ve got the option of getting the tablet with access to LTE or WiMAX connectivity. Take a peek at every other Android tablet getting smashed while the Toughpad takes all the beating a good hardcore tablet aught to: This device (the A1) also has software encryption, custom deployment and device management that they say is not found in any other consumer tablet, dual-factor authentication, and more business-oriented safeguards that’ll keep your boss satisfied with the amount of safe their information is in the guts. Panasonic’s A1 tablet will be working with a cloud-based storefront by the name of Business AppPortal and will have a handful of vertical market apps as well as virtualization and security solutions. There’s also the Panasonic Toughpad B1, the 7-inch version of what’s been listed here in the A1, no additional specifications about which have been listed as of yet. We can expect similar specifications, including another Marvell processor.

Handset Launches - News Snippets
csmart replied to digitalnirvana's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
HTC launches new handset with Beats Audio... Source HTC Rezound first impressions: Music to my ears HTC CEO Peter Chou shows off the HTC Rezound. (Credit: Sara Tew/CNET) To absolutely nobody's surprise (twice), HTC today announced the HTC Rezound for Verizon, the first U.S. smartphone to use HTC-owned Beats Audio. Originally known as the Vigor, the Rezound is HTC's stateside answer to Europe and Asia's HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio, which CNET got a chance to see in early October at CTIA. The Rezound, which features the same integration with the Beats headphones as the Sensation XL, will run on Verizon's ultrafast 4G LTE network. In addition, it's packing a 4.3-inch 720p HD display, which should make mincemeat out of qHD displays we've seen from phones like the Motorola Droid Bionic. There's a ton more besides with this Android 2.3 Gingerbread device, so let's jump in. Design The Rezound has rounded corners, and a face just barely set into the unit. HTC has long delivered on excellent phone craftsmanship, as the Amaze 4G and Sensation 4G phones have demonstrated. The Rezound has a matte back cover surrounding an island of ridges on its backing, to help with grip. The camera and LED flash are on the back cover, with the volume rocker on the right spine. The Micro-USB charging hub is on the left, and the 3.5mm headset jack is up top. It's not as flashy-looking a phone to my eyes as the all-white HTC Radar 4G, or even the purple HTC Rhyme, but HTC phones are solidly built and that interesting patterning on the back does give it a little extra character. I wish it had Gorilla Glass to better protect the goods. Taking a cue from the HTC Droid Incredible, the Rezound is designed inside and out.(Credit: Sara Tew/CNET) Features The features are where the Rezound can soar. Of course it's off to a good start with Verizon's 4G LTE network, which offers currently unbeatable speeds. The big deal is the set of Beats by Dr. Dre earbuds that come with each phone--I cover those in the following section. Another ballyhooed trait is the phone's 4.3-inch 720p HD touch display. While it certainly sounds impressive, we won't really be able to judge clarity, color, sharpness, and all the rest until we sit it side-by-side with our favorite screens--right now those belong to the Samsung Galaxy S II phones, the iPhone 4S(and iPhone 4), and the LG Marquee. It's also equipped with a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MDM9600 processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 16GB preinstalled microSD card. It'll carry HTC Sense 3.5, the absolute latest version of HTC's custom Android interface. Sense 3.5 will feature a customizable and interactive lock screen from which you can do things like check the weather, stocks, and social network updates. For multimedia, there's a rear-facing 8-megapixel camera with support for 1080p HD video capture and fun effects like slow-motion recording. There's a front-facing 2-megapixel camera as well. These are the top-notch specs we'd hope for in the Rezound, but of course camera quality isn't about megapixels alone. The Rezound has a low-light sensor to help improve night shots. We shall see. HTC Rezound hands-on (photos) 1-2 of 12 Scroll LeftScroll Right 75] HTC hasn't had a reputation for the ultimate cameras across the board, HTC said during the launch event in New York, despite the feature-packed HTC Amaze 4G and the T-Mobile MyTouch Slide 4G. Like those two, the Rezound's camera will have instant capture, panorama, and action burst modes. There will also be photo-editing tools, which is a definite plus, especially as more and more smartphones from competing brands include these. Other details include a 1,620mAh battery, Bluetooth 3.0, DLNA support, hot-spot support for up to 10 devices, and Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) capability for watching content on a compatible HDTV. Apps like HTC Watch, a movie app, are also onboard. (Credit: Verizon/HTC) Beats Audio Just how good is Beats by Dr. Dre? Good enough to warrant buying the phone? Our team got a demo of the Sensation XL's Beats headphones at CTIA and yes, with the one-two combination of the hardware (the headsets) with the onboard software, they made a big difference. When you plug in the headphones, the phone recognizes that you've got Beats. When you turn on the software algorithm, it really boosts the sound, specifically boosting the bass and creating louder, fuller, and heavier audio. It's like playing music through your car speakers, versus pumping up a bass line you can feel thrumming in your seat. One often-heard criticism is that the headphones aren't a one-size-fits-all solution for every musical genre. One common complaint is that the aggressive tones degrade more delicate symphonies and choral music. However, people who predominantly listen to rock, hip-hop, and other genres in that vein will notice a rounder sound. Of course, we'll do some more in-depth audio tests once we get a phone in hand for an appreciable length of time. The Beats in-ear headphones on their own range from $120 to $180 when you buy them through retail channels, so there's a definite advantage to buying an HTC Beats phone like the Rezound, which has in-ear buds bundled in. What I will say is that if you're simultaneously in the market for a new phone and some new earbuds, get ye to a Verizon store when these come out and try them for yourself. Pro tip: if you can manage it, take a microSD card filled with songs you like to see how the Beats-enhanced sound plays out. The Ice Cream Sandwich question Verizon has a problem on its hands. It's lining up a plethora of presumably fantastic phones, like the razor-thin Motorola Droid Razr and this here Rezound. But it's also going to start selling the formidable Samsung Galaxy Nexus sometime in mid-to-late November, with its enormous Ice Cream Sandwich update. Where does that leave the Rezound? The good news is, Rezound fans (and HTC devotees) should know that HTC is committed to bringing phones introduced within 18 months of an Android release up to speed, so yes, the Rezound will get Ice Cream Sandwich. HTC has already said during its launch announcement that Ice Cream Sandwich "will likely come early next year." The question I can't answer is exactly when, but look for it in January. Price and availability The HTC Rezound will cost $299.99 with a new, two-year Verizon service agreement and will be available beginning November 14 at Verizon, Best Buy, and Best Buy Mobile stores. You'll also need a $39.99 minimum Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan and a minimum $30-per-month data plan. This is a costly bundle that makes the Rezound one of Verizon's priciest phones, and that's even without the prestige of Android Ice Cream Sandwich--for now. LTE is expensive, there's premium hardware on hand if you count the prestige headphones, and it has the hottest specs on the market, so the price, while high, is not a surprise. I suspect holiday deals will kick in once the phone hits shelves. In sum The HTC Rezound did not disappoint. The screen quality, camera, and speed all promise to be top-of-the-line, and the phone also comes with a pair of celebrity-branded in-ear headphones that are worth quite a bit on their own. At $300 and data requirements, the Rezound may be one of Verizon's priciest phones, but it also promises to be one of its most powerful. It'll be a hot contender against Verizon's other forthcoming handset powerhouses: the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Motorola Droid Razr. -
iPohne users face Siri outage and Apple is unable to provide details. Source Siri goes down for iPhone 4S owners across the country Siri, Apple’s new voice assistant feature for the iPhone 4S, is apparently suffering from an outage, which has rendered it useless for many iPhone owners. The outage began at around 11 am PST today. Siri isn’t just a simple piece of voice control software. To function properly, Siri must communicate with one of Apple’s servers for additional information. For example, when you ask Siri what the weather is like in Nashville, Tenn., it plays an elaborate game of telephone with a main database that has the information, and then updates you with the answer. This is precisely the reason jailbreaking the iPhone 4 and the iPad to run Siri is so difficult. We’re contacting Apple for additional information and will update you with what we find out. In the meantime, feel free to let us know if you’re experiencing the Siri outage by leaving a comment below. Update: We called Apple’s customer service number to find out more information. Despite toggling off the Wi-Fi and restarting the phone as they suggested, I was unable to get Siri to connect (not that I’m surprised). The Apple Care supervisor I spoke with said it’s entirely possible that it’s a network outage. Update 2:40pm Pacific: Siri is still offline, according to our tests, and numerous other users are also reporting outages. So far, Apple has not issued an official statement, and it has not responded to our requests for comment. Update 4:04pm Pacific: Siri functionality has been restored for some iPhone 4S users — including myself. At this point we still don’t know what was causing the outage, or how widespread it was, and Apple still hasn’t responded to our requests for comment. Siri did respond, however. I asked her, “Siri, where you been all day?” Her response? A number of day spas and hair salons ( Screenshot). Thanks to Armen over at iSmashphone for tipping us off, and to VentureBeat’s Heather Kelly for the suggestion about asking Siri where she’s been.

this is really amazing. luck people. Plane lands on its belly without landing gears. no one is hurt.. look at the video.. Video Plane from New Jersey carrying 231 onboard makes emergency landing Source Warsaw, Poland: A Boeing 767 from Newark, New Jersey, carrying 231 people onboard made a dramatic emergency landing in Warsaw on Tuesday after its landing gear failed to open. Sparks and small fires erupted when the Polish LOT airlines plane landed on its belly without its wheels, but nobody was injured, officials said. The pilots discovered a problem with the chassis ahead of landing and circled above the airport for about one hour before landing, said Przemyslaw Przybylski, a spokesman for the Warsaw airport. LOT spokesman Leszek Chorzewski said the plane landed with nearly empty fuel tanks after dumping fuel in preparation for the emergency landing. A fire brigade laid out special flame retardant foam for the plane to land on. On landing, sparks flew from the engine and small fires erupted under the plane but were immediately put out by firefighters. Passengers could be seen evacuating the plane. They were then taken to a medical center to be examined by doctors, Przybylski said. "There was no panic among the passengers. The cabin crew prepared them for the emergency landing well," LOT airlines president, Marcin Pirog, told reporters. Pirog said Captain Tadeusz Wrona and co-pilot Jerzy Szwartz carried out a "perfect emergency landing," which prevented anyone from being injured. "It is the first time a LOT plane had to land without the landing gear out," Pirog said, adding that such landings do not always end well. The airport has been closed until 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Flights which had been scheduled to land in Warsaw have been diverted to Lodz, Gdansk and Krakow. Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski congratulated and thanked the crew for their successful landing.

these deails i got in an email. i cannot vouch for its accuracy, though few points are valid. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT LIBYA Did you know this about Libya ? Some other facts (that mainstream media will never disclose) about "Gaddafi and Libya : Loans to Libyan citizens are given with NO interest. Students would get paid the average salary for the profession they are studying for. If you are unable to get employment the state would pay the full salary as if you were employed until you find employment. When you get married the couple gets an apartment or house for free from the Government. You could go to college anywhere in the world. The state pays 2,500 euros plus accommodation and car allowance. The cars are sold at factory cost. Libya does not owe money, (not a cent) to anyone. No creditors. Free education and health care for all citizens. 25% of the population with a university degree. No beggers on the streets and nobody is homeless (until the recent bombing). Bread costs only $0.15 per loaf. No wonder the US and other capitalist countries do not like Libya . Gaddafi would not consent to taking loans from IMF or World Bank at high interest rates. In other words Libya was INDEPENDENT! That is the real reason for the war in Libya ! He may be a dictator, but that is not the US problem. Also Gaddafi called on all Oil producing countries NOT to accept payment for oil in USD or Euros. He recommended that oil get paid for in GOLD and that would have bankrupted just about every Western Country as most of them do not have gold reserves to match the rate at which they print their useless currencies. Remember the last time someone had the "NERVE" to make a similar statement was when Saddam Hoosein advised all Opec countries not to accept payment for oil in US Dollars. Well, we all know what happened to him

what Monji said is correct. it is really worthless when you get even 5 SMS with similar kind of info. it kills its usability and purpose. other suggestion will be to have different "Sender" name for various locations. so in that case, in smart phone, SMSs will be group by location. but then also, cross linking with other location will be a problem.

Joke Of The Day (New Bpl Norms: Rs 39 Enough For Medical Expenditure)
csmart replied to kshah's topic in The Lounge
Two entrepreneurs in Bangalore try living on $2 a day Source: ndtv.com Three weeks ago, two city-bred, upper-class aspiring entrepreneurs from Bangalore embarked on a mission: learn more about India, by subsisting for a month on what the average Indian does - just 100 rupees ($2.04) a day. So far, Tushar Vashisht and Mathew Cherian, both 26, have lost nine pounds and four pounds, respectively, and complained of dizziness and depression from a lack of food. Milk is a treat, traveling more than five kilometers (3.1 miles) a day can blow their budget and saving money is incredibly difficult. They say they miss dental floss, deodorant and toilet paper. "This has been a humbling experience," said Mr. Vashisht, a former investment banker with Deutsche Bank in San Francisco and Singapore, who says his banker lifestyle now seems "unreal." He said he plans to live on the average Indian's income one day a week for the rest of his life. Mr. Vashisht and Mr. Cherian, a computer science graduate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have been tracking their "lifestyle experiment" on a Facebook page and a blog that breaks down their spending into pie-charts and graphs, and tracks their grocery shopping and caloric intake. The two met when they were both working at the Unique Identification Authority of India, a government project that aims to assign a number to each Indian citizen, in part to make sure that subsidies reach the poor. Recently, they both quit their jobs there to start a company together, selling education and health care content to India's more than 600 million mobile phone users. The 100 rupees-a-day project is a way to help them better understand average Indians' choices, they said. To arrive at the 100 rupees-a-day figure, they took India's average per capita income, which works out to 4,500 rupees a month, and subtracted one-third of their budget for rent. Normally, they rent an apartment together in the Bangalore suburb of Bellandur, so they decided to move into a 10- by-6-foot room used by their landlord's household help, to replicate what they might be able to afford to rent on their combined budget of 3,000 rupees a month. That left them each 3,000 rupees a month, or 100 a day to spend on everything else, from food to Internet use to utilities. From their old lifestyle, they kept the clothes they were wearing, their laptop computers and a badminton set. Their insights into the life of the average India, so far: *A manual laborer in India's lower middle class requires 3,000 calories a day, but invariably receives less. If he wants to add calories, he has to load up on carbohydrates because "protein is ridiculously expensive," they observed. *Addiction can cost dearly. "You smoke, you drink, you lose," said Mr. Cherian. A beedi (hand-rolled cigarette) or gutka (mix of betel nut and tobacco available in sachets) or alcohol addiction can add 30 to 50 rupees in daily costs and decimate the food budget, they say. *Mr. Vashisht and Mr. Cherian could not afford to hire household help, which is a staple of every upper-middle-class Indian household. They found that cooking and cleaning, including hand-washing their clothing, could take them each three hours a day. *Life, including work, home, school and shopping, must be conducted within a five-kilometer radius to be economical, and even then the bicycle is the only really affordable means of transport. Any kind of economic shock, such as medical expenses, can be devastating. After three weeks, the two managed to save 350 rupees. For their final week, they plan to subsist on 32 rupees a day, the spending limit India's Planning Commission set in a controversial affidavit filed with the Supreme Court to define the poor. Urban dwellers who spend at least 32 rupees (less than a dollar) a day on food, education and health care would not be counted as poor, the affidavit said, and would therefore be ineligible for government subsidies. Using that poverty line, 37 percent of India's 1.2 billion are poor, but many say that line is unrealistically low. For their last week, the two men will be living in the suburbs of Kottayam, a city in Kerala state, after investing their savings in two 140-rupee train tickets. They plan to cook over a wood fire, wash their clothes outdoors and drink well water. After deducting the Planning Commission's estimated spending on rent, utilities and transport, they will have 17 rupees a day for food, about one-third what they have been spending over the past three weeks. The "budget that planners have envisioned is not - even by a long shot - enough to have a filling, balanced diet," said Mr. Cherian. "Widespread undernourishment will have serious consequences to the future of India," he predicted. -
Apple iPhone 4S sales set record Source Apple sold more than 4 million iPhone 4S devices in the first three days after it was introduced, setting a record as customers lined up at stores from Sydney to San Francisco to be first with the new touch-screen handset. That's more than double the 1.7 million iPhones sold by the Cupertino company last year, during the introduction of the previous model. Demand for the new device extends Apple's lead as the top maker of smart phones as it fends off rivals including Samsung Electronics and HTC that rely on Google's Android software. Apple's U.S. wireless partners Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint Nextel reported high activation rates for the new iPhone, which has new voice-recognition software, a speedier processor and higher-quality camera. "Higher-than-expected sales may have been the result of availability at Verizon and Sprint in addition to AT&T, broader international distribution, positive reviews, timing of the iPhone 3GS hardware upgrade availability and possible Steve Jobs tribute-related demand," said Mike Abramsky, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, in a research note Monday. He had projected sales of about 3 million units for the premiere weekend. The iPhone 4S went on sale Friday in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom, in Apple's first hardware release since the death of former Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs on Oct. 5. The company also has introduced iCloud, for wirelessly synchronizing music, pictures and documents across Apple devices, and iOS 5 mobile software. Customers lined up outside stores in cities including Frankfurt, Tokyo, San Francisco and New York. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak was among the first to get a handset at the store in Los Gatos. Sales from last weekend won't be included in Apple's fourth-quarter results, due to be reported today. In the period, profit jumped 62 percent to $6.98 billion on sales of $29.6 billion, according to the average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. "Based on launch sales, we think 60 percent year-over-year growth for the December 2011 quarter will prove to be conservative," said Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray Cos., in a note to clients Monday. The launch figures aren't "a perfect apples-to-apples comparison" because the 4S model was effectively available for 2.5 days during its debut weekend, while the prior model was only "effectively available" for 1.25 days before the website crashed and inventory was sold out, said Munster. For the quarter now underway, Apple may sell more than 27 million iPhones, Abramsky estimated. He said sales for fiscal 2012 may reach 110 million, and he rates the stock "outperform." Apple said more than 25 million customers are already using iOS 5, the new mobile operating system, in the first five days of its release, according to a statement Monday. More than 20 million customers have signed up for iCloud, a service for storing and accessing content over the Internet. Samsung sues Samsung Electronics sued Apple in Japan and Australia to stop sales of the iPhone 4S, escalating a legal battle between the world's two biggest makers of smart phones and tablet computers. Samsung also sought injunctions against the sale of the iPad 2 and the previous generation iPhone 4 in Japan, the company said in a statement Monday. Samsung claimed Apple's products infringe its patents covering wireless communications and user-interface technologies. Legal conflicts between the rivals have spread globally since April when Apple claimed that Samsung's Galaxy devices "slavishly" copied the iPad and iPhone. An Australian court last week blocked sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, while Samsung filed motions in France and Italy seeking to ban sales of Apple's latest handset. "The legal battle is lasting longer and is more extensive than originally expected," James Song, an analyst at Daewoo Securities Co., said Monday. "This kind of legal saga isn't good for both companies given their business relationship. The parties will eventually seek to resolve the issue."

whatever we say.. people are mad for iPhone. Apple sold f***ing 4million iPhones in 3 days throughout the world. really, the world is full of iDiots.. more details in next post...

Reliance Jio - Pan India 4G / LTE network
csmart replied to Arun's topic in Reliance Jio 4G LTE (Prepaid & Postpaid)
Mukesh Ambani readies plans to roll out 4G data services, low cost tablets in 2012 Joji Thomas Philip & Himangshu Watts, ET Bureau | Oct 17, 2011, 01.40PM IST Source: TOI NEW DELHI: Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries plans to offer high-speed data services on attractively priced tablets by early next year and scale it up to a countrywide network by the middle of 2012. The company, which made a comeback to telecom last year, plans to offer fourth-generation or 4G-enabled data cards that can be plugged into computers and laptops, apart from providing tablets at a game-changing price of 3,000 or even lower to hook customers, two executives familiar with the development said. RIL has also initiated talks with media and entertainment companies, including Walt Disney's Indian venture UTV Software, to acquire content for its wireless broadband offerings. A deal with Walt Disney, which is close to being finalised, will enable the company to offer games, entertainment and applications for the younger customers. It plans to provide data connectivity with speeds of 50-100 Mbps, much faster than 3G services currently on offer, at cheaper prices. The strategy of enticing customers with low prices is similar to the move in 2003, when it took mobile telephony to the masses with its 'Monsoon Hungama' handsets at 501, helping it win 1 million customers in just 10 days. Reliance Infocom, the telecom arm of the undivided Reliance Group, began its services on December 28, 2002, the birthday of the group's founder Dhirubhai Ambani. The company, now known as Reliance Communications, is owned Anil Ambani, the younger brother of Mukesh. RIL has acquired Infotel, a company that won pan-India spectrum for broadband wireless access last year and plans full-scale commercial operations by mid-2012. By then, it expects to have its networks ready across 700 cities, one of the executives said. Neither wanted to be identified. The company will also gradually offer much higher speeds for data transfer on its network. It has considered a soft launch as early as December, one source said. Reliance is working overtime to make a success out of its latest venture, which it hopes will boost investor confidence that has been battered by harsh criticism from the Comptroller and Auditor General. The company's other initiatives, such as retail, continue to be small blips in its balance sheet while its gas production has declined because of reservoir complexity. The company's spokesman declined comment on specifics of its broadband plans saying Reliance would not comment on speculation. But in an update on its telecoms business, Reliance said on Friday that its telecom unit was "in the process of setting up a world-class broadband wireless network using state-of-the-art technologies and finalising the arrangement with leading global technology players, service providers, infrastructure providers, application developers, device manufacturers and others to help usher the 4G revolution into India". The company is learnt to be in the final phase of talks with three vendors - Alcatel Lucent, Ericsson and China's Huawei - for its broadband gear after finishing trials with equipment provided by all the three. It is not clear if RIL will go with a single vendor or split the contracts between the three, said executives with gearmakers aware of the ongoing talks. -

Source Father of "C" Programming Language Dies at 70 Longtime colleague Rob Pike reports that the "father of the C programming language" died over the weekend at age 70. Zoom Over on Google+, Google engineer and publisher Rob Pike announced that longtime colleague Dennis Ritchie, father of the "C" programming language, has died at age 70. According to Pike, Ritchie passed away at his home on Saturday, October 8, following a long illness. "I trust there are people here who will appreciate the reach of his contributions and mourn his passing appropriately," Pike said. "He was a quiet and mostly private man, but he was also my friend, colleague, and collaborator, and the world has lost a truly great mind." Bell Labs president Jeong Kim backed up the report with an official statement he released to employees on Thursday. "Dennis was well loved by his colleagues at Bell Labs, and will be greatly missed," Kim said. "He was truly an inspiration to all of us, not just for his many accomplishments, but because of who he was as a friend, an inventor, and a humble and gracious man." Born in Bronxville, New York in September 1941, Ritchie graduated from Harvard with degrees in mathematics and physics before signing on with Bell Labs in 1968. He teamed up with engineer Ken Thompson to create Unix in 1971, and then created the C programming language in 1973. Since then, several variants have emerged including C++, C# and Objective-C. Outside of developing C, Ritchie also co-authored "The C Programming Language," a definitive book commonly referred to as K&R (after the authors, Brian Kernighan and Ritchie). He also received the Turing Award in 1983 (along with Kenneth Thompson) thanks to his influential contributions to the development of Unix, and was elected into the National Academy of Engineering in 1988 for developing C and co-developing Unix. Adding to his list of achievements, President Clinton presented Ritchie (and Thompson) with the National Medal of Technology of 1998 for creating C and Unix. "The quality of life and economic strength that all Americans enjoy is due to the vision and dedication of innovators like those we honor here today with the National Medal of Technology," Commerce Secretary William M. Daley said during the award ceremony. "These Medalists have earned our highest honor for their work in creating life-saving practices and products, plants that increase crop yields, and the basis for modern computer operating systems and software." Ritchie was transferred to Lucent Technologies in the late 1990s as part of AT&T's restructuring. He retired in 2007 as head of System Software Research Department, but continued to maintain close ties as a consultant for Bell Labs. "This summer we were fortunate to celebrate with him as he accepted the 2011 Japan Prize for co-inventing the UNIX operating system and the C programming language at a ceremony in Murray Hill, NJ, which was viewed by Bell Labs colleagues around the world," Kim said on Thursday. "For many it was the first time they got to meet him and hear from him." "I know I speak for all of Bell Labs when I say that he made us so proud of him that day," Kim added.
