One of my friends ( not a CDMA user) is looking to buy a new GSM handset and he was kind of zeroing in on the ... iPhone .. I have put his purchasing plans on hold by telling him that the Android OS is the way to go (though I am not on Android as yet) He prefers to source his phones from the UAE or India ( US is not an option for the chap) so looking at these 2 regions as his probable purchase zones, could somebody suggest a really good GSM handset running on Android OS? Price can be at par with iPhone or even higher if the specs are really impressive. Thanks

Your Monthly Data Consumption On Mobile !
Anupe replied to Honest's topic in General Technical Discussion
100-200 MB on Reliance CDMA. Only used for push mail headers and twitter feeds. All downloads usually done on wifi and I dont stream anything on the mobile, hence low usage. I'm happy with Reliance data. I have unlimited 2G plan on Airtel as well, but have hardly used it yet as I dont have a phone to match the CDMA Epic -
Any idea how to set K-9 to idle mode for weekends like some email clients that have a sleep scheduler so that it doesnt ping the servers all night or on weekends? Have had a rough 2 days trying to get my Epic back to DI18(Eclair rom)after the latest froyo update played havoc with my phone. ( No GPS, frequent reboots and apps freeze, absence of rings tone and a few other issues). Finally managed to Odin back to DI18 and when I tried to update to DK28(Froyo rom) I got a failed checksum error from my downloaded file and Odin didnt proceed with the flash to DK28. What has been noticed is that there are some rogue versions of the DK28 tar file being floated around. If you download the DK28 file please do a checksum comparison and make sure it does not bear MD5 383f43ea5a4e6effd2b3fd72f311633a. This particular file version is corrupt and you will not be able to proceed with flashing to Froyo using the Odin method. The file to download is the one which has the MD5 babad9dcbcd357f726b832bb59f81f7f If you're not overly eager to see the pre-released Froyo upgrade , hold back till OTA is announced as this version is not perfect. Lags when switching between portrait and landscape modes has been noticed by many, so hold back if you dont want to be disappointed with the release. That said, the perks of the Froyo update is that you can move your apps (those that are supported, not all) to the SD card, thus freeing up valuable phone memory (I was able to move 90 MB from phone mem to SD card)

Congrats Arun! Good to see the UL 30VT finally safe and sound, in your hands! I'm sure you wont be disappointed with this purchase. I'm just praying somebody comes down from the US by Christmas time, for me to get my purchase going lol

Updated to Froyo this morning and a few things I would like to warn to potential updaters who have yet to make the jump from eclair for the upgrade. Please note that after upgrade, the gps is totally dead and so far I have be unable to tweak GPS Test settings either to see if it can be resolved from within there. If you have ADW Launcher loaded, it crashes the phone and a hard reboot is necessary, so as of now I have uninstalled ADW and things are fine. So far no resolution yet on the GPS problem, the gps toggle indicator in the notification bar is also not showing up in spite of the GPS being switched on, so I'm sure the function is totally broke presently. Will post updates as and when resolution for the problem is available. So for now, if you guys are dependent on GPS for certain routine activities, I would advise you to defer the update to Froyo till such time when a solution to thee GPS problem is arrived at.

Viber For iPhone, Soon to be on Android & Blackberry too
Anupe posted a topic in General Technical Discussion
This one is going to be one popular app. I hope its gets launched on Android platform very soon. It lets you make phone calls to other Viber users ANYWHERE in the world for free ( it uses your data plan for connectivity). There is no need to create a user name , etc.. it uses your existing phone number as your Identity As stated on their website: Viber is an iPhone application (Android and Blackberry versions coming soon!) that lets you make free phone calls to other iPhone users that have Viber installed. When you use Viber, your phone calls to any other Viber user are free, and the sound quality is much better than a regular call. You can call any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free. All Viber features are 100% FREE and do not require any additional "in application" purchase. Look up there page here and keep a close watch for the Android and Blackberry versions that will be releasing soon! VIBER link Some of the features of VIBER are: * NO HIDDEN COSTS: Once you and your friends install the free Viber application, you can use it to talk (and soon also text) as much as you want. Talk, talk, and talk some more and it's all free. Just makes sure all your friends get Viber! All you need is an Internet connection: 3G or Wi-Fi where available. * NO INTERNATIONAL CHARGES: It doesn't matter where you or your friends are, be it on the same network or in a totally different country. You can talk for as much as you want, for free. Just make sure your friends have Viber too. * COMPLETELY FREE AND WITH NO ADS: Viber and all Viber features are absolutely free and do not require any additional "in application" purchase. On top of that, Viber doesn't contain any annoying ads. * NO USERNAMES, PASSWORDS OR REGISTRATION: You know your friend's phone number, so why bother with yet another username and password? Viber uses your phone number as your "identity" and lets you make free Viber phone calls to any of your friends that have Viber – using THEIR phone number. * NO BUDDY LIST: Viber automatically highlights friends in your iPhone's address book that have Viber. That way you know who you can call for free! * CALL ANYONE WITH VIBER, NOT JUST YOUR FRIENDS: Want to dial a number and don't know if they have Viber? No problem, make the call with Viber and if they don't have Viber the call will be made using your regular phone - but don't forget to invite your friends to Viber so your next call is free . * YOU CAN ALWAYS RECEIVE A CALL ON VIBER: If your phone is ON then so is Viber. Always ready to make and receive phone calls. No need to log in, or "go online" to receive a call. * NO NEED TO ADD BUDDIES: Unlike applications like Skype, Windows Live Messenger or Fring where you need to "add buddies" and have them approve you, Viber behaves just like a phone. Just like you do not need to "add" someone in order to call them, you do not need to add your friends in order to call them on Viber. If you know their phone number, then you know their Viber number, and you're ready to go! * MISSED CALL NOTIFICATION: Even if you missed your Viber call because your iPhone was off, or there was no service, Viber will notify you of your missed calls as soon as service is restored. * SOUND QUALITY: Viber uses state of the art technology in order to make sure the sound quality you get is much better than GSM or a regular phone call -
Have tried Norton, McAfee et all, but I'd give my vote to Kaspersky. Value for money, pricing and allround good protection from their Internet Suite2010 which I am currently using. Price of software per PC works out to less than Rs 250 each.

hmm easiest option would bet to re-install quick settings app, enable your data and then uninstall the app again, wouldnt it?

The Most Awaited MNP Finally Introduced!
Anupe replied to SumitVerma's topic in Mobile Number Portability (MNP)
I had spoken to CC of Airtel to enquire about MNP for Kerala yesterday but they couldnt provide me with a date. I got it instead from Reliance, who actually called me back to give me the information. What was most hilarious though was that from this morning, I was inundated with a series of missed calls early in the day itself, and finally when I answered one of them, it turned out to be from Airtel CC, desperately trying to contact me to see if there was anyway I was "unhappy" with their service and if I had called them asking about MNP because I wanted to move away from their network. They were literally licking my boots, saying that they would do anything to ensure that I am a pleased customer and that I am valuable to them, blah blah... it was quite funny indeed, since I had called them just to get information about the MNP roll out date in our state! -

New wallpaper, new home screen shot. Optimized for EPIC, but should work well for other phones too. Including the WP alongside the SS

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but I discovered that you can back up all your contacts onto your SD card in vcard format. ( linked accounts included) To do this, Open your contacts application Make sure All contacts are visible, unless you only want to back up certain groups. Hit the menu button Hit the Import/Export button I'm presuming this will work for the HTC phones as well.

Regarding music, the surround sound aspect will be beneficial only if you have audio tracks that have been mastered in DTS format, which is not very often seen in the market. I've only seen 2 Indian titles mastered in DTS released in all these years, both Tamil OSTs and they sounded mind blowing, but then again, only those DTS cds actually benefit having a well calibrated surround sound system. For the usual audio cds that are prevalent in the market, a good system (or audiophile quality if that's how you want to go about it as well) is what will give you the best aural expereince, as the title would have been mastered in stereo, and no surround sound circuitry is going to upscale that to a discernible quality on any low or high end surround system.

Wirelessly Transfer Files to/from Your Android Phone and Windows PC
Anupe replied to Anupe's topic in Android
I have been having issues getting a consistent connection 'tween my phone and wifi after installing this app, so please check how it works for you and if you have similar issues like I did, I suggest you uninstall it, as removing the app had fixed my problem -
My Wifi issue in Post#124 has been resolved thanks to DK. The issue was being caused by the app called SwiFTP which I had installed a few days ago for sharing the phone with PC wirelessly. On uninstalling the rogue app, my wifi issues have been fixed! Yay! Caveat: Do not install SwiFTP. I had started a thread in the Android section with the title :"Wirelessly Transfer Files to/from Your Android Phone and Windows PC" Please do not install it or use that app, until further updates and the issues have been properly solved. I have sent a mail to the developer of the app as well, notifying him about the issue.

Anybody having issues with wifi staying connected? My wifi disconnects very often and then refuses to reconnect even though it detects the SSID. I have set the wifi sleep mode to Never so that the phone remains on even when phone screen goes off, but it doesnt resolve the issue. Any heads up on this issue?

Talking of the GPS apps.. are you guys using the default Maps or the Sygic version? I'm asking cuz I'm not a big GPS user and have yet to use even the default Maps app on my Epic as yet. Would like to have the app primed for functionality though, and would like a suggestion of whether to go with default app or Sygic.

^^^ I think Android update will be available simultaneously for both since they're both relatively new releases from Sammy stable.. Fascinate will be slimmer. If you are not someone who does a lot of texting ( even if you do, the Swype onboard keyboard actually rocks the socks off the physical keyboard when typing regular words) then go for Fascinate. If you type a lot of messages in ethnic lingo using english alphabets, then physical keyboard is more user friendly
