i have a feeling it will begin '09... no reasons more than its being the next step forward... it would still be a level playing field... someone's loss would be someone else's profit and vice versa... but yes what the operators would stand to loose are some captive clients which are trapped for not being able to loose their numbers... apart from this i think the entire operator pack is out for your money... u choose not based on who's good but on the one skimming your the least without being unbearable... -
i also happened to stumble upon it by chance... i was cleaning the bookmarks folder and couldnt believe myself at what i saw... IMHO nothing compares to demenoid... and thanks to Arun for letting me in...

Pan-India mobile number portability by June ’09 Archana Khatri, Hindustan Times Want to change that service provider, but keep your old mobile number? That will soon be a reality for all the mobile phone users across the country by June 2009. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Friday recommended that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) should come out with the road map for MNP (mobile number portability) for implementation in rest of the country by June 2009. Communications and IT minister A Raja had announced the phase one of mobile number portability for the four metro cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai in November 2007. To start with, transferring one’s mobile number from one operator to another will be possible only within a city. If you will move out of the city, you will have to surrender the number and take a new one. The entire process of streamlining the system to make mobile number portability a reality will take about nine months from the date when the license for setting up a clearing-house is awarded by the DoT. The role of the clearing-house will be to provide end-to-end mobile number portability solution like managing call delivery and billing between two operators. For the mobile number portability to succeed, the networks of all the operators will have to be simultaneously upgraded Typically, four to six operators provide mobile services in most Indian cities. Industry experts say that more the number of operators, more complex the streaming of the process may be. “If the data is not appropriately recorded (in the central clearing house), incoming calls could be lost”, said telecom consultant Usha Rajeev with PricewaterhouseCoopers The telecom regulator has also recommended that in case of porting the prepaid mobile number, the phone user will have to exhaust the balance in his phone as no credit transfer will be allowed. In India, more than 80 per cent of the mobile phone connections fall in the prepaid category. Telecom regulator also recommends that the break perid while porting the number should not be more than two hours. -

no wonder everybody from videocon to at&t are chasing this sector for a share of the pie... -
they hold credit card and debit card transactions at these stores as cash sale which is used as a buffer to boost sales on dry and target sales days... so u could see them posting it even a month later... inside news as my wifey is a merchant with Big Bazaar @Wecaz... insure u replace your card if icici confirm its skimming as arun has rightly stated...
-

Today, Samsung announced the SGH-D780, which is claimed to be the successor of the D880. However, unlike the slider, this candybar doesn’t use the DuoS branding, although it is also a GSM with two SIM cards. That is rather strange, since this is just the second Samsung phone with this feature (not counting the P720, which was showcased, but not really announced) and it doesn’t make sense for Samsung to abandon the name. Just as with the D880, the two SIM cards in the D780 are autonomous and you can start or receive a call through any of them. D780 is a tri-band candybar with a 2.1-inch QVGA display and a 2-megapixel camera. It will be first available in Russia, staring in May and shortly afterwards in Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia. Samsung SGH-D780 Specifications source: Phone Arena

cannot be done as is... like petar says blocked ESN from a network cannot be activated on any other network

It is strange for something seeming so basic to be reported incorrectly... and the fact that it cannot/has not been fixed...
