  9. Source - Times of India epaper TIMES NEWS NETWORK Kolkata: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has decided to revitalise its beleaguered CDMA service in cities. The state-owned telecom operator will pump Rs 900 crore into the CDMA network with the first tranche of Rs 20.37 crore allotted to Calcutta Telephones (CalTel). Incidentally, BSNL was the first operator to introduce CDMA in the country under the Tarang brand. The service was rolled out in Kolkata in 2001, years before Reliance Infocomm and Tata Teleservices. However, it failed to consolidate and lost the first mover advantage. Instead, it shifted focus entirely on GSM service CellOne. “Till now, BSNL was offering CDMA services only in rural areas. Now, we will focus on class A cities and Kolkata will be the first to get the service by December,” Cal-Tel chief general manager S K Chakravarty said on Monday. The Rs 900-crore CDMA investment will be made in two phases: Rs 300 crore in the first to be completed by December, followed by Rs 600 crore next year. “The CDMA service will be bundled with a fixed wireless terminals for home use, a mobile connection and high speed internet service. The pricing is being worked out,” he said. Once the CDMA infrastructure is in place, Cal-Tel will also launch Evolution-Data Optimised (EV-DO) service. EV-DO is a high-speed broadband connection for CDMA users under 3rd generation (3G) telecom standard. On Monday, CalTel it launched a high-speed wireless internet service for GSM subscribers that will CellOne subscribers to access the net on a laptop at 1 paise per kilobyte. Two other services — Tricon and Universal Personal Number — were also unveiled. Under Tricon, the company is bundling landline, cellular connection and internet service at rates that will allow 30% savings on the current tariff. UPN will offer an universal number which will allow subscribers to receive or make calls from any BSNL landlines or cellphones at reduced rates.
  10. Source - Times of India epaper AT&T joins mobile licence rush DoT In A Tizzy Over 400 Applications; May Delink Licence From Spectrum Shalini Singh | TNN New Delhi: Amid the rush for licences to offer telecom services, global giant AT&T entered the game, as it knocked on the government’s door for providing mobile, fixed-phone and broadband connections in India. AT&T, which has teamed up with Mahindra Telecommunications Pvt Ltd, was among the 150 applicants who approached the department of telecommunications (DoT) on Monday, the last date for submitting applications for Universal Access Services Licences (UASL). DoT now has to deal with over 400 applications and the sheer number of fresh aspirants may become unmanageable. The US giant, through AT&T India, has become the first major global telecom player to apply for pan-India licences. The company has announced its intent of acquiring a significant footprint in India, a market which it exited after partnering the Birlas during initial years telecom sector liberalisation. In October 2006, AT&T became the first global telecom operator to secure national and international long distance licences in India, to begin commercial services in early 2007. It owns the largest voice and wireless data network in the US, with nearly 64 million subscribers. AT&T’s entry into India could make the market more exciting with Vodafone having just acquired Hutchison’s stake to give competition to Bharti Airtel, Reliance, BSNL and Idea. Other applicants include Moser Baer and BPTP Properties, Prithvi Solutions, Next Gen Telecom, Avinija Properties Ltd, Meta Telecommunications Ltd and Sterlite Industries. With this, over eight real estate firms, apart from several other aspirants from unrelated industries, are now wooing the telecom sector. The flood of applications is in anticipations of bagging expensive and scarce spectrum at a bargain price of Rs 1,600 crore an entry fee borrowed from as far ago as 2001. However, a senior DoT official, clearing the air on the prevailing first-come-firstserved policy for allocating licences said, the government reserves the right to modify the methodology for allocation of spectrum based on its availability. This could come as a rude shock to the bounty hunters queuing up in the hope that pan-India licenses along with spectrum will turn them into billionaires overnight. This is the first authoritative statement from DoT, which could start moving this sector towards sanity. The source also said that awarding a license did not guarantee spectrum. This is evident from the fact that of 20-22 operators who were given licenses last year, none have been given any spectrum yet, he said. While the conclusion of the senior officials comments would point towards auctions not just in 3G but also in 2G as an obvious outcome, it remains a matter for telecom minister, A Raja to decide on his return to Delhi on Tuesday. Interestingly, It is learnt that Raja has called a selective meeting of all existing operators on 3rd October and spectrum is expected to feature in the discussions. Clarifying doubts on the issue of Trai’s stiffening of subscriber-linked criteria, the DoT official said that there was no disagreement between DoT and Trai. DIALLING DOT: AT&T has become the first major global telecom player to apply for pan-India licences

The HTC Touch Dual will be available in Europe later on this month with either a 16 or 20-key keypad depending on country and operator choice. Besides that, today HTC also announced an additional color variant called Arctic Silver of the original HTC Touch. The new color styling will be available from October. Product pictures of this variety, unfortunately are still not availavble. Also a free, full-screen virtual keypad will be available for download from the HTC website as an add-on to HTC Touch users. The HTC P6500 is the next in line with a series of heart-winning features. The device has quad-band GSM/EDGE, but most importantly HSDPA, as well as stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) and Wi-Fi support. The HTC S730 will become market available as early as this month. 22. Well i am also getting network & able to talk clearly but thats when i am in Metro underground station in Calcutta I have used mobiles and pagers in calcutta since the start of services. I clearly remember that for quite some time no service was available in Metro underground stations. In fact many of the love-birds used to switch off their cells for those special times and then tell their boss that they were traveling in the metro. Then with much fan-fare, the GSM operators announced that they have installed the repeaters and other hardware to provide mobile facility in calcutta metro. Delhi metro been more than 20 years younger than the Calcutta version must have started with such hardware right from the beginning. So I guess its all with the provision of hardware. well well i am getting clear signal in Metro underground stations in calcutta since May 2006
  23. Source - http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_juno_born_as_d...50-news-316.php Information about the latest Dopod C750 leaked on two Chinese websites with a handful of good pictures. Dopod continues to rely on HTC as the OEM of its handsets, so eyes are on the C750 as the prime suspect for being the first working example of the rumored HTC Juno platform. Comparison is inevitable, as both the Juno and the C750 are Windows Mobile smartphones with a QWERTY keyboard in the slider form factor. Dopod C750 - possibly HTC Juno The Dopod C750 will offer quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and a stunning 2.6" TFT display with a VGA resolution (480 x 640 pixels), but it's by no means a high-end feature-packed mobile. It's equipped with a mainstream 2 megapixel camera (auto focus is yet unconfirmed) with no flash and there is no Wi-Fi or GPS. There is stereo Bluetooth however, along with a miniUSB port and a microSD memory card slot. The Dopod C750 runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard and, besides the regular features, will also offer business card scanning, stock trading software, and data encryption. Unfortunately, the processor powering the device is still OMAP850 201MHz, raising doubts about the smooth running of the OS with that power-hungry VGA screen. The Dopod C750 should be available in November.
