Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/software/m...ght-1.0/15141/0 Microsoft has released to the Web (RTW) Silverlight 1.0, a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering a richer user experiences on the Web. In addition, Microsoft will work with Novell to deliver Silverlight support for Linux, called Moonlight, and based on the project started on mono-project.com. Silverlight reduces development and deployment costs and provides enhanced Web audio and video streaming and playback using Windows Media Technologies. Microsoft unveiled new Silverlight customer experiences on "Entertainment Tonight," HSN and World Wrestling Entertainment, and also launched the Silverlight Partner Initiative, a program designed to foster collaboration among solution providers, content delivery networks, tools vendors and design agencies. "Our expectations for compelling, immersive experiences on the Web are increasing daily," said Ray Ozzie, Microsoft's chief software architect. "With today's release of Silverlight 1.0, we're making it possible for developers and designers to deliver to individuals the kind of high-def experiences they crave by integrating data and services in rich and unique ways. Silverlight will further accelerate the growth in rich interactive applications by giving developers and designers new options for delivering great experiences that span the Web, PC, phone and other devices." The decision to work with Novell to offer Silverlight support for the Linux platform is in direct response to customer feedback. "Silverlight is a popular new way to build and deliver cross-browser, cross-platform experiences on the Web," said Miguel de Icaza, vice president of Developer Platforms and leader of the Mono project at Novell. "Novell is excited to work with Microsoft to extend Silverlight beyond Windows and Macintosh to Linux with Moonlight, so Linux users everywhere can enhance their rich media and interactive experiences on the Web." To foster greater involvement and collaboration within the interactive media industry, Microsoft is rolling out the Silverlight Partner Initiative. More than 35 companies have already signed up to support Silverlight. In addition to the release of Silverlight 1.0, Microsoft released Expression Encoder 1.0 (formerly Expression Media Encoder), a tool that makes it simple for professionals to encode, enhance and publish rich media content to Silverlight. The intuitive interface allows users to rapidly encode a wide array of file-based media content formats into a Silverlight experience. Expression Encoder also eases production of live events using sought-after features such as multisource switching and publishing of content to services including Silverlight Streaming by Windows Live. www.silverlight.net

Source - http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_ks20_announced_...07-news-303.php IFA 2007 is certainly off to a flying start in mobile phone aspect. LG KS20 was a pleasant surprise from the first day of the annual event held in Berlin. It is already clear that LG are focusing attention on touchscreen devices since only a few days after the KU990 announcement we now face another touch-based handset with a Prada phone inspired design. LG KS20 is a HSPA-enabled device meaning that it supports both HSDPA and HSUPA for achieving great speeds in downloading as well as uploading. LG has also thought of areas where 3G is not usable adding EDGE and GPRS to the network connectivity capabilities. The TFT touchscreen is as large as 2.8 inches with QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) resolution. The somewhat surprising news here is the presence of the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional OS in the device, having in mind that its “smart” predecessor KS10 was based on Symbian 9.1 S60UI. The LG KS20’s camera sports 2 megapixel resolution, autofocus, flash and video recording abilities – not bad for a stylish PocketPC. There is also a secondary camera used for video calls. Other multimedia features of the sleek handset are video and mp3 players as well as FM radio and TV out. The 90MB user memory is expandable through the microSD card slot. Wireless connectivity is also taken care of by including Bluetooth v2.0 and Wi-Fi in the compact device. LG KS20 measures 99.5 x 58 x 12.9 mm and weighs only 99 grams, which is a great achievement for all the functionality included. Unfortunately, there is still no word of the new LG family member’s price and availability.

Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1070827/asp/...ory_8241703.asp New Delhi, Aug. 26: British telecom firm Vodafone will launch its brand and services in India by October. In the offing are low-cost handsets for the mass and international services such as Vodafone Passport, Vodafone Simply and Vodafone live!, sources said. The telecom player is slated to offer handsets at Rs 666 at the lower end. This will fit in with the company’s plans to capture the mass market, the sources added. “Vodafone Simply — which is a basic no-frills mobile phone used to make voice calls — ill attract the rural mass looking for a wireless version of the plain vanilla landline phone,” said analysts. Vodafone Passport enables customers going abroad to talk at domestic rates. They pay a one-off connection fee and then shell out standard Indian rates. The company may also introduce a very competitive price plan for Indian customers. “Globally, Vodafone offers aggressive strategies such as Vodafone-Stop-the-Clock price plan, where customers can talk for up to one hour on evenings and weekends and only pay for the first 3 minutes,” said the sources. Such plans could be introduced in the price-sensitive Indian market with some modifications. Vodafone is also toying with the idea of launching customised handsets. “The exclusive handsets will be designed to meet the needs of Vodafone’s customers in terms of price, specification and user experience. It can be fully integrated with the company’s live services. This will help drive the use of services and increase the average revenue per user,” said the sources. Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin had earlier said, “We will bring in our expertise in a wide range of services while respecting the local fabric.” The company is also building brand awareness in six new circles — Orissa, Bihar, Assam, the Northeast, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu &Kashmir — where it holds unified access service licence through its wholly owned subsidiary, Vodafone Essar Spacetel. Vodafone Essar offers mobile services in 16 of the 23 telecom circles. However, Vodafone Essar Spacetel is yet to receive its share of GSM spectrum from the department of telecom for the six circles to roll out 2G services. Vodafone’s acquisition of a controlling stake in Hutch Essar in February this year brought in $801 million (Rs 3,285 crore) as foreign direct investment, making the world’s largest mobile company the top investor up to May this year. The UK-based company bought controlling stake in the country’s fourth largest cellular operator — Hutch Essar — for $10.9 billion in February this year.

Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1070901/asp/...ory_8259922.asp Read what Nokia is doing to their customers Calcutta cry of battery bias - Delay in replacement of faulty cellphone parts resented A STAFF REPORTER Nokia is yet to replace the faulty cellphone batteries of many city customers, more than 15 days after it issued an advisory on a batch of BL-5C batteries that might “overheat” during charging. “The company has been much more prompt in Delhi and Mumbai. People in Mumbai, I gather, got their batteries replaced in 48 hours,” alleged retired bureaucrat Manindra Nath Banerjee in a letter to Metro. He and his daughter filed online applications for battery replacement on August 15. “The newspapers said the defective BL-5C batteries would be replaced in 10 days. We have not received even a phone call from the company yet,” said the Jodhpur Park resident. Ishani Dutta Roy, a resident of Dum Dum, has the same tale to tell. Only, she had filed the online application a day earlier than the Banerjees. Nokia declined to provide a city-wise break-up of batteries replaced. An operations manager at a Nokia Care shop claimed that four Nokia Priority Dealers and Nokia Care shops in the city have replaced over defective 1,000 batteries. “We have enough BL-5C batteries with us. We have just started sending the new batteries by courier,” he said. According to him, the delays might have been caused because of “improper registrations”. There are complaints regarding that, too. Sodepur homemaker Dipannita Ganguly told Metro that she learnt at a Nokia shop in Dunlop on Thursday that she and her daughter had not received new batteries because their complaints had not been registered. “Both of us received SMS texts from Nokia saying that the new batteries would reach us by courier,” asserted Dipannita.

Source - Times of India epaper Trai twist to spectrum allocation Regulator’s First-Come-First-Serve Policy May Throw Up New & Unexpected Winners & Losers Shalini Singh | TNN New Delhi: The telecom industry is moving from silence to shock with the impact of Trai’s recommendations on licence reforms sinking in. By throwing up new and unexpected winners and losers, the policy is expected to tear apart an already divided industry, with no two companies able to find common ground. Companies who believed they had a winning proposition by backing the subscriber-linked policy for spectrum allocation, while opposing auctions, are suddenly finding themselves out of the race. The new winners who are way up in the queue are those who have recently been given fresh licences or have applied for them. The culprit is Trai’s first-comefirst-served policy for allocation of spectrum, which now places applicants ahead of operators. This ensures that existing operators will have to wait between six months to four years before they get additional spectrum. With the exception of Essar in Delhi and Mumbai and Bharti Airtel in Maharashtra and AP, who are eligible for the next tranche of spectrum, all others are doomed for an endless wait. This is significant as it validates the stance taken by CDMA operators, Reliance and HFCL that GSM operators were using spectrum inefficiently. As it turns out, CDMA operators will have to wait quite a while. Each operator faces a unique impact. Maxis Aircel has emerged the biggest gainer. It already holds 14 licenses and will be first in line for fresh spectrum under the first-comefirst-served rule. Vodafone Essar, however, suffers a setback in nearly 14 of its16 operating circles, but gains in six where it secured licenses in December 2006. Idea Cellular is offered a mixed bag. In 11 of its existing circles, it has a long wait for spectrum but gains through its 2 new licenses of December 2006 in Mumbai and Bihar. Spice is a significant gainer. It suffers a mild setback in its Punjab and Karnataka operations but faces a No 6 priority ranking in 20 service areas where it applied for fresh licences in August 2006. Following Spice are Swan and Cheetah, which together applied for 16 licences in March 2007. The last two in the list are HFCL at ninth place with 21 applications and Parvsnath, which filed 22 applications earlier this week. Tata Teleservices and Reliance's existing CDMA operations, like Bharti, will have to wait longer for new spectrum. If accepted by DoT, Trai’s latest recommendations will prove to be a lottery for companies by rewarding them merely for having got a toehold in the license race ahead of others. Each nationwide licence is likely to fetch government about Rs 1,600 crore for an initial tranche of 6.2 MHz of GSM and 3.75 MHz of CDMA spectrum. Experts place the market value of this spectrum at a much higher level than the benchmark established in 2001.Interestingly, the new M&A norms permit up to 20% cross-holding and consolidation of spectrum. This will make new applicants potential targets for horsetrading, as it is unlikely that too of these companies will set up nationwide networks considering the prohibitive investment cost. Fresh debate on the parameters for determining first-come-firstserved will also surface, as multiple companies may have either applied on the same day or received licenses on the same day. So should date of application, date of LoI or effective date of license be the criteria? With this, the battleground now shifts from Trai to DoT and if India’s telecom history is any benchmark, also very likely to the courts. -

Source - http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Detai...px?NewsId=21176 CDMA fans rejoice! According to some reliable reports, it looks like RIM has taken the wraps off the BlackBerry 8130 which looks a lot like the BlackBerry Pearl 2. It has a 3.5 mm headset jack, 2 Mpx camera, and MicroSD support (which should be external) and it runs on the 1xEVDO network. It looks like this version will have the GPS as opposed to the WiFi option - but nothing has been confirmed yet. Verizon customers (and maybe Sprint too) are set to receive the device sometime in November, 3 months after the GSM Pearl 2s launch (makes perfect sense). We will have to wait for all the announced features, plan pricings and details before we can really jump for joy.

If they r waiting for EVDO buddy than i think we wont get Blackberry before 2009 or 2010 bcoz thats when 3G may finally happen.

Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1070831/asp/...ory_8258350.asp LG bets big on GSM segment OUR CORRESPONDENT New Delhi, Aug. 30: LG Electronics India is eyeing a 10 per cent share of the GSM market in India by 2008 as the company is losing its position in the CDMA segment. “We don’t think CDMA is a profitable business. The company is losing a lot of money and profits are going down because of low-cost models from China,” said Moon B. Shin, managing director of LG India and president of LG (Southwest Asia). The Korean firm plans to make India an export hub for West Asia and Africa. “We will increase our GSM market share from 1.4 per cent to 8-10 per cent by 2008,” Shin added. The company today launched two GSM mobile handsets under its black label series — LG Shine slider phone for Rs 15,999 and LG Shine bar phone for Rs 8,999.

The battery — BLD-3 — does not belong to the BL-5C series .. so will Nokia now issue another advisory abt this model number too? Its time people wake up now from their obsession with Nokia ... & its time Nokia also show that they really care for their customers .. just issuing advisory wont help we require genuine products not substandard products.. People want their Battery replacement to be done in a space of 2 days max & u know what Nokia will play it safe they will say that battery which exploded could be fake even if the battery was genuine .. & will say its an isolated case very typical answer. I would also suggest to all the people to buy battery or replace it only from Authorised Nokia dealer & never buy batteries from grey market.. just bcoz its available there cheaply.. Nokia should do its best to solve the battery problem asap via replacement in 2 days(if its among affected lot) & we as responsible citizens should also help them by buying only genuine stuff from Nokia authorised dealers only.

Another mobile battery explodes Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1070830/asp/...ory_8254424.asp Plugged in to charge, mobile explodes Aug. 29: A mobile phone blew up while being charged in a south Calcutta house, the “chocolate bomb-like explosion” leaving a pregnant homemaker speechless and quaking in fear. Kishori Saha’s Nokia 2100 was plugged in for 15 minutes at the Ganguly Bagan home when the battery exploded. The 25-year-old Kishori, who is five months pregnant, was not hurt but she was in such a state of shock that she had to be taken to hospital. The battery — BLD-3 — does not belong to the BL-5C series that were at the centre of a storm earlier this month when some cells of the series were recalled on suspicion of overheating. A Nokia spokesperson said the “Calcutta incident” was being investigated. “From initial findings, it seems that the consumer was using a phone which was last sold in 2004. Nokia takes consumer issues very seriously and promotes the use of genuine accessories in phones,” a company statement said. The mobile had been bought from a shop in Durgapur two-and-a-half years ago, Kishori’s husband Suman said but could not recall details. When the BL-5C advisory was issued, a Nokia spokesperson had told The Telegraph that handsets and batteries are widely sold in the grey market. Companies usually don’t accept responsibility if accessories are bought from the grey market and in the absence of vouchers. The battery identification number (26 characters in the case of BL-5C and 18 digits on the one that exploded) can help tell between the real and the fake but not if even that is forged. An option is to see whether the hologram on the battery changes colour when held against light. If the colour changes, it can be more or less assumed that the product is genuine. Till Wednesday night, the Nokia website (www.nokia.com) did not have information on the explosion or its possible causes. The Nokia helplines (08030303838 from BSNL landlines and 30303838 for other phones) were busy. Scientists who specialise in batteries said a short circuit between the anode and the cathode or the failure of a protection mechanism to prevent overcharging are two possibilities that may cause a battery to explode. But they cautioned that precise reasons could not be established without examining the battery. “When the charging schedule is not adhered to and overcharging happens, a protection mechanism is expected to work and safeguard the battery. But if the protection mechanism fails, an explosion can occur,” said N.G. Renganathan at the Central Electrochemical Research Institute in Tamil Nadu. Kishori’s husband Suman, a website designer, said he was in office when he heard about the explosion at 1pm. He rushed home to find that his wife had been taken to Baghajatin hospital by neighbours. She was discharged without being administered medicine. Neighbour Mithu Barui said she heard a “chocolate bomb-like” explosion. Kishori’s landlady Beena Saha said she put “some toothpaste” on her tenant’s cheeks because of a “burning sensation”. “I could feel that she was shaking and her teeth were chattering,” Beena said.
