Bsnl Wasting Public Money- A Loss Of Whopping Rs 794 Crore
coolrajiv posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News_b...how/2852975.cms CAG pulls up BSNL for making idle investment of Rs 794 cr NEW DELHI: The Comptroller and Auditor General on Monday rapped state-owned telecom giant BSNL for excess procurement of cables and equipment for landline telephony despite falling subscriber base that led to a loss of whopping Rs 794 crore. "Procurement of cables, exchange equipment and other stores for landline telephony service without considering the declining trend in the subscriber base of landline telephony and the past consumption pattern of stores resulted in excess procurement," said the CAG report, tabled in Parliament. The number of people using mobile in the country has increased considerably over past few years. At the end of the last year, the total wireless subscriber base in India stood at 233.63 million. The report further pointed out that the company had failed to realise revenue worth Rs 35 crore from private telecom firms due to deficiencies in billing and collection charges for infrastructure facilities provided by the company. There were dues worth Rs 72 crore accumulated because of control weakness of the state-run company. Similarly, another state-run telecom service provider, MTNL, which provides services in Delhi and Mumbai, was also plagued by problem of procuring wireless-in-local loop equipment without assessing the requirement, resulting in an expenditure worth Rs 219 crore. -
iPhone v2.0, Good Stuff to Come After the news of the launch of the iPhone’s v2.0 firmware (June) with the official SDK, developers are seemingly thrilled and iPhone users obviously more so. With this latest deliverance from Apple, developers have been at the drawing board working frantically to make sure that the iPhone stays at the top by coming up with plenty of ways to enhance the OS with new apps. Here are a few features that should brighten up an iPhone user's day - Mass Email Delete It’s quite odd when you think about it that Apple, in its first try would not incorporate a feature like this their very first try. Then again they left a lot out. So with the latest firmware ready to be out in June, those of you iPhone users who use their device for emailing can rejoice, your cluttered up mail will be much easier to get rid off now than ever before, so instead of getting irked by the singular deletion feature you’ll able to pretty much wipe all your junk clean with a wave of your hand (quite literally as you can imagine thanks to multi-touch). Bonjour This system allows iPhone users to connect computers and other iPhones on a given network. Just like you would connect to other devices using Bluetooth by searching and connecting, Bonjour will be able to do the same on a network. Full-Screen Mode on Safari Another feature that should have made it in the first round and didn’t was a full-page web browser. The Safari browser, may be brilliant and all and occupy a good 90 percent of the iPhone's superb display, but hey, why have 90% when you can have it all right? Scalable Vector Graphics and New CSS Effects The iPhone, with the latest firmware, would also have SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). So files can be compressed and their original resolutions can be maintained. The new firmware will also support CSS effects, which works like Flash for animations, effects etc. PowerPoint Support The iPhone would also have support to view PowerPoint presentations with the next upgrade. Locally Stored Web-Apps Users will also be able to store web-apps on their handsets and use them offline. According to Apple the latest firmware version would also be able to support functional web client-side database API when the network isn’t running. Search The iPhone will also be getting a search option for looking up contacts and other information on the device. With these features in mind, which are seemingly just the tip of the iceberg, the anticipation for the iPhone to hit India is only getting more than just difficult to bear. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take too long or we’ll be seeing one only once a v3.0 is out. I don’t think India can wait that long Mr. Jobs.

As the world impatiently waits for Apple’s iPhone to become like any other mobile out there that can easily be used and thoroughly customized with free applications for business and play, Apple is slowly but surely heading in that direction thankfully. It’s already a known fact that there are plenty of developers out there that have been coming up with iPhone applications on a weekly (if not sooner) basis to help us, as users, achieve the absolution of finally having a totally open iPhone. No strings attached, no more jailbreaking and what not. Hopefully the day will come when one can simply walk into an Apple or any other store pick up an iPhone and walkout without having to pay anyone extra for making it compatible with your service provider. Just pay over the counter, put in your SIM card and you’re good to go. You won't have to worry about the firmware upgrading or downgrading etc. and most importantly the device Bricking in case you happen to install some third party software. The iPhone may one day be just like a Sony Ericsson or Nokia or Samsung handset. Version 1.1.3 already saw some exciting changes to the iPhone so there's a lot yet to be expected. Apple has recently previewed its iPhone 2.0 software, scheduled for release this June, and announced the immediate availability of a beta release of the software to select developers and enterprise customers. The iPhone 2.0 beta release includes both the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), the previous one was actually leaked, as well as new enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and the addition of Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to private corporate networks. "We’re excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. The iPhone SDK provides developers with a rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools to create applications for iPhone and iPod Touch. Starting today, anyone can download the beta iPhone SDK for free and run the iPhone Simulator on their Mac. As we’ve talked about before (link) the SDK will enable developers to come up with their own applications for various purposes to run on the iPhone's MAC OS. With the kind of technology that the iPhone already incorporates like its Multi-Touch user interface, built-in three-axis accelerometer and of course it’s rather large space capacity (now up to 16GB) it may not be too long before developers will make most of our initial expectations from the iPhone a reality. Apple has licensed Exchange ActiveSync from Microsoft and is building it right into the iPhone, so that iPhone will connect out-of-the-box to Microsoft Exchange Servers 2003 and 2007 for secure over-the-air push email, contacts, calendars and global address lists. Built-in Exchange ActiveSync support also enables security features such as remote wipe, password policies and auto-discovery. The addition of WPA2 Enterprise with 802.1x authentication enables enterprise customers to deploy iPhone and iPod touch with the latest standards for protection of Wi-Fi networks.

Tata Communications Rolls Out World's Largest Commercial Wimax Network With Telsima
coolrajiv posted a topic in Other Broadband Discussion
Tata Communications announced that it will be deploying the worlds largest WiMAX network in India to serve its consumer and enterprise customer base. The large equipment contact was awarded to Telsima, a leading WiMAX equipment provider which is growing at a rapid pace. Some of the details of the deployment: * Over 5000 Enterprise and Retail customers already up in ten cities; Aggressive plans to capture 200,000 customers in retail segment alone in FY 2009 * Bangalore unwired for Retail customers; over 600 base station sectors deployed and radiating * Plans to roll out WiMAX in 110 cities for Enterprise and 15 Cities for Retail Segment by 2008 * Telsima WiMAX solutions selected for the largest deployment; 3000 base station sectors being deployed * Telsima WiMAX solutions selected based on advanced wireless technologies; Largest WiMAX STC/MRC network ever deployed This is a significant announcement for many reasons. Tata Communications is showing it will do whatever it takes to deliver broadband to meet demand. Telsima continues to show that it can not just compete but win against all the other WiMAX equipment suppliers. And finally it's nice to see a large contact from a Tier 1 provider outside of Sprint. Everyone knows the best market for WiMAX is in the emerging countries that lack broadband infrastructure. This should be the beginning of a nice trend for the WiMAX industry. -

Virgin Mobile Is Here For The Youth, Courtesy Tata
coolrajiv replied to Arun's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Virgin seduction: receive calls, get credit Richard Branson, the flamboyant British billionaire, today ignited a revolution in India’s mobile world with the offer of rock-bottom call rates and a unique cash back offer for receiving calls. Branson’s Virgin Mobile India, which stormed India’s telephony market under a franchisee agreement with Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTL), is introducing features such as SIM card-based CDMA services with the option of an easy upgrade of handsets. But possibly the best feature is that every Virgin subscriber will get 10 paise credit for every minute of incoming calls they receive from any network. There’s more: after the first two minutes of calls each day (which will be charged at Re 1 per minute), all Virgin Mobile outgoing calls on local networks for the rest of the day will be charged at 50 paise per minute. The offer easily beats the lowest call rates in the industry: 99 paise per minute from Reliance and Re 1 per minute from Airtel. Virgin Mobile customers will enjoy this rate without any commitment or extra charge. “We intend to take the Indian market by storm with our dramatically different services, cheaper calls and attractively priced handsets. It helps that so far, there is no mobile service in India aimed at young people,” Branson said at the launch. The other major CDMA player, Reliance Communications, refused to comment on Virgin Mobile’s competitive offerings. Promising personalised customer support, all Virgin Mobile customers will be called back by the same call centre agent to address their query. Branson said as part of their specialised Indian market offering, Virgin would have password-protected SMS folders for Indian youngsters to keep prying parents away. Virgin Mobile India will provide youth-oriented mobile services on the TTL network. Virgin will exclusively license the Virgin Mobile brand and technology expertise in the area of mobile value-added services and handsets to TTL. Branson said Virgin would be paid an annual royalty depending on the company’s financial performance. The company expects to break even in three years and add five million youth subscribers by then, he added. Virgin Mobile is the world’s first mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) and does not maintain its own network. Instead, it enters into contracts to use the existing networks of other providers, on which it offers services under the Virgin brand. The company chose the franchisee route in India since MVNO services are not yet permitted in the country. True to style, Branson unveiled his mobile brand with a 15-storey jump off a hotel building. The company will launch 15,000 handsets and 40,000 top-up outlets across 50 cities in the initial phase. “For the Tatas, the tieup with Virgin Mobile will bring a segmented approach to the customer base and greater teledensity. Over the next several months, we intend to build mobile segments targeted at working women, kids and senior citizens too,” said TTL managing director Anil Sardana. Asked why he opted to go with Tata Teleservices, Branson said he was impressed by Tata’s uncluttered CDMA network. “The Indian telecom market is growing like no other. Our product is good and we need only a small per cent of the market to do well,” he said. Asked if he would rope in a brand ambassador, Branson said: “I definitely need a younger ambassador. I’m getting too old to jump off buildings.” And what motivates the maverick billionaire? “We want to carry on challenging established companies across the world and shake them up. We're supporting people who can do that. The idea is not to sit on profits but reinvest them,” said Branson. -
The FM's budget speech has just concluded though as of the time of posting this article the speech has not yet been made available at http://indiabudget.nic.in/ Mr. Chidambaram mentioned "Wireless Data Cards" in the list of products on which Excise Duty has been slashed from 16% to nil. That's great news considering all the telecom operators who offer such products import them from the likes of Huawei, Sierra Wireless etc. The catch though is that I hope the term "Wireless Data Cards" includes the new USB dongles as well since data "cards" as such have become defunct as laptop makers have phased out the PCIMCIA slot into which these cards were inserted. Assuming that the entire duty cut benefit is passed on to consumers, a USB data dongle which typically costs around Rs. 3,000 will be cheaper by nearly Rs. 500.

Other features include a 5 megapixel camera with face detection, image stabilizer and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), Bluetooth with A2DP profile, integrated FM radio and a nifty music player that incorporates Bang & Olfusen’s ICEpower digital power amplification technology.
