Lg To Debut New Slim Slider At Gsma 2008
coolrajiv posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/mobile-pho...ma-2008/27861/0 GSMA 2008 is almost upon us, and LG has made it amply clear that its new KF510 mobile handset will make its debut at the event. The slim slider has LG's famous touch-sensitive navigation under its display and is loaded with a 3 megapixel (and possibly auto-focus) camera. It’s not just the intriguing design, but the colors too – such as Stardust Gray or Sunset Red – that will make the KF510 an eye-catcher. The phone is quite slim at 10.9mm, comes with an MP3 player, and is Bluetooth-enabled. The LG KF510 will officially launch in March this year. We’ll have to wait a few more days, however, before we get more information on this new slider. Stay tuned. -
Last month, Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications (RCom) made headlines when they were allocated GSM spectrum in 14 circles by the Department of Telecom (DoT). RCom, which had previously applied for a pan-India GSM license, was allocated 4.4MHz start-up spectrum in these 14 circles. Incidentally, RCom is the country's largest CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) services provider, having GSM (Global System for Mobile services) operations in six circles. Out of its nearly 40 million customers, 35.5 million are on CDMA, with the remaining on GSM services. Now, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Communications, Reliance Telecom Limited (RTL), has been granted in-principle approval by the Ministry of Communications and IT for providing CDMA mobile services under the existing Unified Access Service Licenses in Assam and the North East. This is in addition to existing GSM services provided by RTL. RCom reportedly informed the Bombay Stock Exchange earlier this week that in addition to existing GSM services provided by RTL in Assam and the North East, it will also offer CDMA services in these areas. Meanwhile, RCom, after being allocated GSM spectrum in 14 circles by DoT, had announced plans to place an order for nearly 80 to 100 million lines for GSM mobile services, which would qualify as the biggest telecom equipment order placed so far.

Apple Boosts iPhone, iPod Touch Capacity Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/mobile-pho...apacity/28001/0 I’m sure you’ve heard the news, but we thought we'd confirm it in case you had a shadow of a doubt. Yes, the Apple iPhone is now available with a whopping 16GB of internal space. It’s out already and available in official Apple stores in the US for Rs 19,670 ($499 before taxes). As usual the whole planet is waiting with bated breath for Steve Jobs to lower the price. Not that this is going to make much of a difference, I should think. With the latest Firmware (V1.1.3 ) things are looking up for the iPhone generation. All I can say about the whole situation is this – WHEN DO WE GET IT? If that’s not enough, Apple’s iPod Touch has also been souped up with 32GB of internal memory and will retail for Rs 19,670 ($499 before taxes). The 8GB version of the iPhone is currently priced at Rs 15,735 ($399) and the 8GB and 16GB iPod Touch models are available for Rs 11,800 ($299) and Rs 15,735 ($399) respectively.

Internet speed may be restored by Wednesday Engineers Zero In On Problem Site Located 8.5 Km Off Alexandria In Egypt Even six days after the undersea cables that carry internet traffic were damaged off the Egyptian coast, services in India continue to remain slower than normal. Telecom operators say this is a function of the complexities involved in setting the problem right. The cables that carry the traffic lies deep under the water. Not just that, the cable isn’t buried. It is simply bound to the seabed at some locations using ‘stings’. As the currents change, the cables drift between these stings. That makes it tough for engineers to pin point the location where the cable is damaged. Add to this the fact that the damage usually isn’t physical. It is electronic. ‘‘It’s like detecting leakage of water in a pipeline,’’ said a spokesperson for Flag Telecom, one of the affected companies. ‘‘You measure the quantity of water that gets in through point A. Then, you measure the quantity of water coming out at point B. Depending on how much water has been lost, you mathematically compute where the leakage is,’’ he explained. In the case of undersea cables, you measure the amount of data lost in transit. Using this technique, engineers have figured out that ground zero is within 8.5 kms off Alexandria in Egypt. Having done that, they sent out two large ships carrying a few miles worth of fresh fibre optic lines to make the repairs. ‘These ships will be able to pin point the exact location where the damage has occurred by Tuesday,’’ said the spokesperson. That done, the vessels will activate the high precision positioning system (DGPS), which allows the ship to hold the position so that it doesn’t drift while the repair work in underway. Cable engineers will hoist the damaged part, and replace it with a new stretch of cable. This process can take anywhere between 18-24 hours (on Wednesday), say experts. The repaired cable will then lowered back to the seabed on ropes. Until then, however, all major internet service providers in the city will be forced to divert data through the Pacific region, which means data has to pass via the US west coast and on to the east and finally to UK and Europe, causing a delay of for every single transaction.

Mobile Players Battle It Out Over Tariff Cut

Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1080103/jsp/...ory_8736730.jsp Mobile players battle it out over tariff cut Mumbai, Jan. 2: The mobile tariff war has erupted again. Airtel today slashed its local outgoing call rates for its 40 million pre-paid customers to a flat Rs 1 per minute. Within minutes, Reliance Communications pared its outgoing call rate for for its pre-paid subscribers to 99 paise a minute in a battle of oneupmanship. The Airtel rate cut comes into effect from tomorrow. All outgoing calls made by Airtel prepaid mobile customers to any Airtel mobile, another mobile network in the same circle or a local landline will cost Re 1 a minute. Currently, Airtel prepaid subscribers are charged Rs 1.20 per minute for outgoing calls. The benefit will be extended to post-paid customers by next week, said an Airtel spokesperson. At present, Airtel post-paid customers under the Rs 99 and Rs 150 tariff plans are also billed at Rs 1.20 per minute for outgoing calls. Reliance slashed outgoing local call rates for pre-paid subscribers from Rs 1.99 and Rs 1.79 under two different plans to a uniform 99 paise per minute. The company also announced the launch of special tariff vouchers of Rs 33 a month and Rs 49 a month, which would enable a subscriber to make local calls to Reliance numbers for 33 paise and other local calls for 49 paise per minute. Pre-paid users form bulk of the Indian mobile market and account for over 80 per cent of the subscriber base of both the companies. Bharti currently has a subscriber base of about 52 million, while Reliance has about 39 million subscribers. Unveiling the new tariff, S.P. Shukla, president, personal business, Reliance Communications, said, “We have always led the market in offering the best calling rates to our subscribers. Our new tariff structure is unique in the way that it appeals to all users. We will charge 99 paise to any phone within the circle; heavy users will get to pay as low as 33 paise a minute.” The Reliance call rates will come into effect in the next 48 hours. The Airtel tariff change, however, is not applicable to the Airtel 495 Lifetime pre-paid customers and other customers enjoying special benefits such as Happy Recharge. “This initiative marks our strategic intent to simplify tariff and differentiate ourselves in a market already cluttered with multiple tariff plans. Going forward, we will continue to explore innovative and affordable tariff options that are aimed to speed up growth, enhance customer value and significantly contribute towards increasing market and revenue share in the future,” said Sanjay Kapoor, president — mobile services, Airtel. -

Source - http://www.techtree.com/India/News/Airtel_...-86130-613.html Airtel Re 1 Offer for All Prepaid Airtel has extended its offer of Re 1 per minute for local calls to all prepaid lifetime customers. With this, all Airtel prepaid lifetime customers -- both new as well as existing ones -- will be charged Re 1 for every local call. Existing customers on other plans, whose tariff is more than Re 1 per minute will be automatically migrated to the revised tariff of Re 1 per minute. Earlier this month, Airtel had announced its Re 1 per minute offer only for its Rs 495 lifetime prepaid customers. But now, all prepaid lifetime customers can enjoy the Re 1 call rate. In addition, Airtel has introduced full talk time (less service tax) on all subsequent recharges for its lifetime customers. Recently, the company had launched super lifetime validity recharge at Rs 999, which had the USP of Re 1 for all local calls. Now, the same proposition will be made available for recharge at Rs 495, resulting in savings of Rs 504. Airtel believes that reducing entry-level costs and ongoing spends in the telecom sector will break all barriers, and further expand the market. Features of Airtel's revised lifetime offering are: Lifetime prepaid card for MRP of Rs 495; full talk time (less service tax) on all subsequent recharges; lifetime validity; local SMS and calls for Re 1; and STD SMS and calls for Rs 2 and Rs 2.65 respectively. Meanwhile, Airtel is making available to its customers two special discount packs. Whereby customers can get local call rates of 50p to any mobile for a monthly rental of Rs 48, else they can get call rates of 50p to any local number and STD calls at Re 1 for a monthly rental of Rs 90. -
Vodafone To Invest $6 Billion In India In 3 Years

Source - http://www.rediff.com/money/2008/jan/21voda.htm Vodafone to invest $6 billion in India in 3 years Setting an ambitious target of 100 million cellular subscribers, leading private GSM operator Vodafone-Essar today announced an investment of $6 billion (about Rs 24,000 crore) in the next three years. "We shall be investing $2 billion annually for the next three years on our Indian operations. We have set a target of reaching 100 million subscriber base from the current level of 40 million," UK-based telecom giant Vodafone's CEO Arun Sarin told reporters in New Delhi on Monday. Asked about the funding of investments, he said the investments would be made from the Vodafone's treasury. On the issue of ongoing controversy over spectrum allocation, Sarin said: "We hope the issue will be resolved at the earliest. We need more spectrum as the spectrum and the capital expenditure go hand in hand. "We have presented our views to the Indian government. We are very positive about the government," he said. Sarin also announced that the company would be launching a range of new services in India, but he declined to elaborate on these new offerings. -
BSNL to invest $500 mn for CDMA services NEW DELHI: Even as Reliance Communications and Tatas are moving to the GSM turf, they will soon face a new competitor on their home ground. State-owned BSNL is all set to launch full-fledged CDMA-based mobile services in all major cities in the country. “After our application for a full-fledged CDMA mobility licence is approved, we plan to roll out CDMA services in all major cities and towns. The initial investment will be about $500 million,” BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal told ET. This is also the first time that BSNL has put a figure to its CDMA rollout plans. In fact, the company has been working on the finer details of its CDMA project for several months now. On November 26 last year, minister for communications and IT, A Raja, had informed the Parliament that BSNL has applied for nationwide, full-fledged CDMA licence. “BSNL has submitted a report to the government recently seeking permission to provide fully mobile services using CDMA technology in addition to the GSM technology under the existing CMTS (cellular mobile telephony service) licence in 21 service areas,” Mr Raja had said. According to Mr Goyal, BSNL will be in a position to roll out CDMA services as soon as the approvals come through. “We already have the requisite start-up spectrum in place,” he said. BSNL is using the same clause in the modified UASL (unified access service licence) that allows service providers to offer services on both GSM and CDMA platforms, which Tatas and RCOM have availed of to make their GSM forays. More important, unlike private players, BSNL will not have to pay the Rs 1,651-crore entry fee, performance bank guarantee fee and also need not provide other financial guarantees for its CDMA foray since state-owned players are exempt from all these. BSNL is also in the process of hiving off its 40,000 towers into a separate company and lease it to other telcos. Several other service providers including the likes of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications, Spice and Idea Cellular have adopted this business model to reduce both their capex and opex as they expand their services to rural India. Importantly, as reported earlier by ET, 2008 is also likely to see the PSU go in for an initial public offer. This could well be the mother of all IPOs as BSNL, which has about 70 million customers, is learnt to be looking at divesting about 20 per cent stake within the next 12 months. Analysts estimate that the PSU to be valued at close to $100 billion, which puts a 20% stake dilution at $20 billion — the largest that the country has witnessed so far. For its CDMA rollout, BSNL will largely rely on its existing infrastructure. “We will use our existing infrastructure. We will roll out towers in places where it is required,” Mr Goyal added.

yeah India has won .. they deserved to win this match .. Kudos to the Men in Blue .. they let their work do the talking after what happ at Sydney .. this test match win i would rate as the best for an Indian team in Test cricket history.. Well played India I would also emphasis that we always talk abt Gavaskar, Kapil dev & Sachin tendulkar as the best Indian cricketers they r truly great but in my view the best Indian cricketer(greatest) is the unsung hero called Anil Kumble .. he is the ultimate match winner for India .. time & again he has delivered for India .. It was a complete Team effort .. our young pace attack outshone the reputed Aussie pace attack.. On a bouncy Perth track which was Aussie's backyard .. Team India thoroughly outplayed them .. but for the umpire's blunders the score at the end of this match would have been 2-1 in India's favor .. never mine it doesn't matter to me .. in my view Team India has already won the series

The company which is India's No.1 CDMA operator has received GSM spectrum last week. It had received a pan india GSM license earlier. EDGE will enable the company to offer high speed data services in conjunction with voice services. Anil Ambani the chairman of R-com is looking at negotiating a 100 million-line GSM tender at highly competitive rates. He is exploring the possibility of average costs per digital exchange line(or per connection) that will be 50 percent lower than what his rivals paid. If successful , R-com will get an advantage in pricing vis-a-vis mobile tariffs. Rcom is believed to have called the shortlisted foreign GSM equipment vendors for final negotiations which are expected to start by Wednesday. R-com would target 6 million new GSM subscribers every month. It aims to have 20 percent of new subscribers in its network. Trai moots more fines for unwanted calls The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Wednesday proposed to impose a fine of up to Rs 20,000 on service providers for non-compliance of its directive regarding unsolicited tele-marketing calls and messages. The regulator issued a short consultation to amend Telecom Unsolicited Commercial Communications Regulations, 2007, to increase the effectiveness of these regulations by providing some financial sanctions to erring service providers. After the amendment, if any telecom service provider does not comply with provisions of the Regulations, it would be fined up to Rs 5,000 for the first instance and not more than Rs 20,000 for every subsequent instance, Trai said in a statement. It also proposed to revise the tariff to be levied from the registered telemarketer to Rs 500 for the first unsolicited call and Rs 1,000 for the second or any subsequent unsolicited call. Trai, in October 2007, had set up the National Do Not Call registry, under which users can register if they do not want to receive any telemarketing call or message. Despite registration, some users are still receiving such calls. Till date, 7.5 million phone users have registered and 12,183 telemarketers have got themselves registered. Telemarketing calls have engaged the attention of Parliament, Supreme Court, high courts, the Reserve Bank of India [Get Quote], etc, Trai said, adding that there have also been a number of consumer complaints about telemarketing calls. "Financial sanctions as an effective deterrent to non-compliance of the Telecom UCC Regulations, 2007 have become a necessity," it said, asking for stakeholders comments by January 23.

Source - http://infotech.indiatimes.com/articleshow/2699506.cms Spectrum on seniority basis: DoT NEW DELHI: The government said spectrum to new telecom players, who were last week awarded Letters of Intent, would be distributed on the basis of who was the first to deposit licence fee -- even if the difference is a fraction of a second. “We cannot change the policy. We have given the LoIs to the eligible candidates in a very transparent manner. First, we have to scrutinise the LoIs and in the next stage, signing of license (will take place) and then comes distribution of spectrum,” Telecom Minister A Raja said on the sidelines of a BSNL conference. On the day of distribution of LoIs, the applicants had swarmed Sanchar Bhawan to pay the fees, seeking licence and then spectrum to start mobile services. There are nine companies, including Unitech, Datacom, Shyam Telelink and Swan Communications, in the race to get spectrum first, an exercise which has been ridden with controversies. Some of the applicants have suggested that spectrum to all the nine companies should be alloted simultaneously to avoid any legal battle. Asked when the spectrum can actually be allotted to the waiting players, the minister said the availability has to be assessed and then a decision shall be taken. On the fate of applicants who applied after September 25 and have not been considered in the first round of LoI distribution, he declined to give any definite time frame. “They (applications received after September 25, 2007) may be considered after allotting spectrum to first batch or earlier,” Raja said. Asked about Bycell whose application has been rejected, he said after complete scrutiny LoIs has been given. If anyone has any grievance they are at liberty to go to court.
