Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1071206/asp/...ory_8635272.asp Even before the spectrum tangle is resolved, Bharti Airtel and Reliance ADAG are getting ready for a new clash. The rivalry between the two telecom titans is set to break the spectrum barrier and hit television screens. Going by the plans of the two stalwarts, Bharti seems to have a headstart in the new race with the Sunil Mittal company ready to launch a Internet protocol television service in the National Capital Region in December. Reliance ADAG has already inked a $500-million deal with Microsoft to launch IPTV services in New Delhi and Mumbai, but the launch is scheduled not before March next year. “We will analyse operations in the region for a quarter and then take a call on the pan India rollout,” said Manoj Kohli, CEO of Bharti Airtel. Kohli declined to comment if Calcutta would have access to Airtel IPTV services before the Pujas next year. “It all depends on how our foray in the capital works out. It will work in all homes and offices where digital subscriber line (DSL) technology is being served,” Kohli added. Airtel IPTV will be based on the existing DSL network, a technology that transforms plain old telephone lines into a high-speed conduit for data, information, entertainment and more. Reliance plans to switch a substantial part of its 37-million customer base to the IPTV platform, while Airtel’s IPTV will be available in all homes and offices where DSL is already being served. DSL utilises more of the bandwidth on copper phone lines than what is used for telephone services. Therefore, on different frequencies, one can talk and surf the Internet simultaneously. According to reports, Airtel is investing Rs 150 crore in the first phase and has already set up high-tech infrastructure facilities in Gurgaon, Haryana. Airtel will face competition from other service providers such as BSNL and MTNL DTH service Airtel may launch its DTH services in Calcutta in April next year. “Like for all our services, east will be a focus area for DTH too. The service will have around 200 channels and we promise to introduce value additions which are hitherto not available on the DTH platform,” Kohli said. Airtel wants to have the largest combination of telephony and entertainment, he added. Airtel is awaiting the government’s decision on mobile television and has already put in its recommendations with the Trai committee. Reliance also plans to launch DTH services by the year-end or early next year through its wholly owned subsidiary Reliance BIG TV at a lower price than the existing players. Dish TV and Tata Sky, the current big DTH players, have combined investments of Rs 3,000 crore.

Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/smart-mobi...-market/22975/0 ASUS Launches 2 PDAs in The Indian Market Asus today unveiled its mobile communication product strategy for India. The formal initiative to enter the Indian market has been kick-started with the launch of two of its Windows Mobile 6 professional PDA phones for business professionals – The P526 and M530w. ASUS India has announced that India Digital Lifestyle Distributors Pvt Ltd (IDLDPL) will distribute PDA-phones to large format and mobile phone retailers across the country. The company is also in talks with various mobile telecom service providers to bundle Asus PDA phones with their new subscribers. ASUS plans to initially target the top five metros - Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai for the PDA phones. The company plans to establish a strong brand presence in these five metros followed by other cities and towns across India. “We see a huge potential going forward in the PDA Phone market in India.”, said Mr. Benson Lin, General Manager, ASUS Asia Pacific region. “India can expect to see a whole range of premium Asus PDA phones being launched in the next few months,” he added. The P526 is equipped with GPS capabilities and a host of messaging enhancements to allow users to experience Windows Live with improved stability and speed. It has a 2.6" TFT display that supports 65K colors and has a 240 x 320 pixel resolution. The media player supports MPEG4 (supporting 30 FPS QCIF video) MIDI/MP3/WMA/WAV/AAC/ AAC+/AMR and other music formats. The device is also has a 2 megapixel camera. The P526 is also equipped with 128 MB Flash and 64 MB SDRAM. It supports Micro-SD cards for external memory and supports USB v1.1/ Bluetooth 1.2. Apart from these features the device also has some very Asus specific apps like Remote Presenter to allow users to control PowerPoint presentations stored on a notebook or PC via a Bluetooth connection, ASUS Meeting Planner and ASUS Secret function that encrypts and protects sensitive documents. With the ASUS M530w smartphone the first thing you'll notice is the QWERTY keypad of course. The integrated 2 Mega Pixel Auto-Macro camera is equipped with a flash while the Windows Media Player application supports full screen movies and music broadcasts. It has a 2.4" TFT display with 65K colors and a 320 x 240 pixel resolution, built-in 256 MB of Flash memory and a 64 MB SDRAM and supports microSD cards for external memory. Source - http://informationweek.com/blog/main/archi...eo_says_3g.html AT&T CEO Says 3G iPhone Will Be Available Next Year The 3G iPhone has been naught but a rumor until AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson opened his mouth recently and spilled the beans. Oh, how Steve Jobs must be fuming right now. All Stephenson would commit to is "next year", but that's enough for many. Though the iPhone has been a good seller since its June 29 debut, there are many who have decided against purchasing it because it is limited to EDGE data networks and can't access faster 3G wireless data speeds. Looks like they won't have to wait too much longer before a 3G version of the iPhone becomes available. At a meeting in California, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson told reporters that a 3G version will be available next year. He also said that he couldn't say exactly when it will be available, or how much more it will cost than the current version of the iPhone, which sells for $399. Combining 3G data speeds with a device that can run third-party applications will likely make 2008 a banner year for the iPhone. The SDK for the iPhone will be released in February, and we'll probably have more details come MacWorld in January. Whether or not Jobs will use that event to launch the next version of the iPhone is unknown, but it isn't beyond reason. Some suggest that the reason the iPhone isn't widely available across Europe is because it isn't 3G. Spain's Telefonica, for example, has reportedly held off on releasing the iPhone until it is 3G enabled because it has only GPRS and HSPA networks running. GPRS is slower than EDGE, and makes for a poor experience. According to analysts, the number of people who put off buying an iPhone now to wait for a 3G one won't affect immediate iPhone sales too much. With nearly 1.5 million of them already sold, Jobs' original goal of selling 10 million of the converged devices by the end of 2008 is certainly looking like more of a reality.

Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1071129/asp/...ory_8604997.asp New Delhi, Nov. 28: Telecom operators, cable TV companies and Internet service providers can offer the Internet protocol television (IPTV) service to their subscribers under their existing licences and without paying extra fees. In its recommendations for IPTV, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) also proposed 74 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) across all broadcasting categories. The current policy allows 49 per cent FDI in cable services, 74 per cent in telecom and 100 per cent in Internet services. Many telecom companies, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, plan to offer IPTV in a big way. However, only MTNL has launched the IPTV service in Delhi and Mumbai. Uncertainties over getting the required licence have been holding back operators from deploying the service. Trai today said since IPTV was new, it could be offered by telecom operators holding unified access service licence, Internet service providers with a net worth more than Rs 100 crore and cable TV operators registered under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995. The content of TV channels will be regulated by the ministry of information and broadcasting and the broadcasting firms will be responsible for complying with the norms. Trai said that while telecom service providers would be allowed to arrange the infrastructure to provide IPTV, they would take the content only from broadcasters that are regulated under the cable TV act and conform to downlinking guidelines. Operators providing IPTV service will not be allowed to produce news content. They can show only those news channels that have permission from the ministry of information and broadcasting. Trai has also suggested an amendment to the cable TV act to permit a broadcaster to give signals to telecom operators. Under the current norms for the downlinking of television channels, broadcasters can provide satellite signals only to cable and DTH operators. IPTV is an interactive digital television service that is delivered over the Internet instead of the traditional cable network. There are some additional features such as video on demand that allows users to watch movies for a fee. They can pause, fast forward and rewind both live and recorded content. Being in a digital form, the picture quality is also much better than analog transmission.

Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1071129/asp/...ory_8606248.asp Calcutta, Nov. 28: Nokia is betting big on eastern India. The handset major, which reported a 40-45 per cent rise in business last year from the eastern region, expects the growth to continue in the next two years. “The east is no longer a story of higher growth on a smaller base. By next year, subscribers from the east will equal other regions. So we are very bullish about the eastern market,” said D. Shivakumar, vice-chairman and managing director of Nokia India. Nokia’s battery problems have not dented handset sales, Shivakumar said. During Diwali, sales rose 45 per cent compared with last year. The move towards standardising batteries, chargers and other accessories has begun, he said. Nokia’s combined market share in the CDMA and GSM segments is around 53 per cent. The company plans to operate mainly in the replacement market for CDMA phones. The replacement segment is about 10 per cent of the total CDMA market in the country. Nokia has pulled out of the CDMA segment in many countries but since the Indian CDMA market is on a growth curve, the handset major plans to maintain status quo in this segment for sometime. “The price of CDMA handsets at below $20 does not make it viable for us to target the segment separately. We have six handset models in this segment and plan to continue with the same,” Shivakumar added. Nokia, which has a 70 per cent market share in the GSM segment, does not believe in volumes and sub-Rs1,000 handsets. The lowest price of a Nokia model is Rs 1,499 compared with Vodafone’s magic box at Rs 1,199. “We do not believe in number games and will do what it takes to adhere to international safety standards and provide quality phones to customers,” he added.

The 5610 and 5310 Xpressmusic phones have a variety of features to users not including the obvious fact of having an apparently better music player than some of the previous models. Source - http://www.gsmarena.com/tmobile_sells_unlo...ne-news-366.php T-Mobile sells unlocked Apple iPhone It's finally a fact - Apple iPhone unlocked will be selling officially. We know it's hard to believe but T-Mobile has formally announced it today. And if you are just starting to think it's too good to be true here goes the sobering fact. The handset is going to cost 999 Euro. Yeah, you heard it just right - about $1500 a piece is what T-Mobile is going to charge for the precious unlocked iPhone. Furthermore, the handset won't be available for online or telephone orders and will only be sold in the telecom's official shops. In case you wondered how come T-Mobile is selling unlocked iPhones just 11 days after the official start of sales in Germany, a court ruling has outlawed the exclusive sales of phones on contract only. With the unlocked handsets costing an arm and a leg, we really wonder if the court decision is of much point really. The good news is mostly for the customers who bought the iPhone between the 19th of November and the day the first unlocked handsets are released. Their iPhones can be unlocked for free.

Sony Ericsson Conceptualizes Phone With Full-sized Usb Port

Source - http://www.everythingusb.com/sony_ericsson...hone_13755.html Sony Ericsson Conceptualizes Phone with Full-sized USB port Yep, you heard it right. Pictures of a new concept phone from Sony Ericsson show a phone that features a type-A receptacle USB port. What does this mean for you? Well to start you can use transfer files to your phone without the use of your computer by simply plugging in your flash drive. Other than that, not much seems to be known at this time. After seeing this it makes me wonder why someone didn’t think of it sooner. Since this is only a concept design there is no telling what will happen… it might just be scrapped all together. Speculatively speaking, this could open up a lot of different options for accessories for phones and maybe if some of the manufacturers use their head for something besides keeping their ears apart could become very useful, very quickly. -

Govt Sees Six New Pan-india Mobile Players
coolrajiv posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1071119/asp/...ory_8565277.asp Govt sees six new pan-India mobile players New Delhi, Nov. 18: The department of telecom (DoT) expects at least six companies to pay the licence fee to offer cellular services on a pan-India basis. Forty-six companies have submitted 575 applications in response to the latest offer from the DoT to provide cellular services, of which only 20 companies want to operate across India. According to DoT officials, the department expects at least six of the 20 pan-India applicants to convert their letters of intent (LoI) into licences. Each of them will pay Rs 1,650 crore as the licence fee, jacking up the DoT’s revenues by around Rs 10,000 crore. Though the DoT is giving the letters of intent to all applicants, it expects only a few to convert the letters into actual licences, given the high initial fee being charged without any guarantee of spectrum. The companies that are expected to buy the pan-India licences include domestic and foreign players, such as AT&T, Spice, HFCL, DLF, Parsvnath and BPL Mumbai. “The process of issuing the letters is being looked into within the department and a decision will be taken soon,” the officials said. The six new entrants will invest at least Rs 60,000 crore in two years to start all-India operations, they said. Smaller players, who are seeking licences in a few circles, will also invest substantial sums. Officials said the new telecom licence holders would get spectrum only after existing mobile operators and firms with licences but no spectrum get their allotments. Operators have no objections to this policy, but some want the process to be over quickly. In a letter to the DoT, Modi group-promoted Spice Telecom said, “Our focus area is the issuance of LoI to us with respect to our application submitted in August 2006 for 20 telecom circles.” Shyam Telecom, Himachal Futuristic Communications Ltd and a few other applicants who will benefit from the first come, first served spectrum allocation policy want the government to speed up the exercise. -

Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/smart-mobi...w-8800s/22003/0 Nokia Gets Arty With the New 8800s Nokia’s 8800 series has always embodied class, elegance and a very artful feel and has always managed to make the very traditional, simplistic design look like something that’s more of a status symbol than a mobile phone. The latest additions to the series are the Nokia 8800 Arte (art) and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte. Both phones are essentially the same, except for the fact that the Sapphire Arte version has a genuine sapphire gemstone embedded in the center of the 5 way nav-pad. Aside from their traditional metal and glass bodies the surfaces now have an Anti-fingerprint coating (about time guys). Both these new models have taken the series to whole new level being equipped with a 3 megapixel, auto-focus cameras, 3G capabilities and having 1GB of internal memory. They also come with 2 inch, QVGA, 240x320 pixels resolution, OLED displays with up to 16 million colors. The Arte models also use the new standardized microUSB connectors for charging and data transfer. Nokia 8800 Arte Apart from the physical traits that clearly make these models in the series stand out, Nokia has also incorporated some fancy new technology into these Arte pieces. First off is the "turn-to-mute" feature wherein all you need to do if you want to silence an incoming call is simply flip the phone over on it’s back. Another new feature is a Tap for Time function. By lightly tapping the metal portion under the screen an analogue clock appears on the screen. Continuing a tradition of incorporating exclusive soundtracks in its premium handsets, Nokia has invited the internationally acclaimed master producers Kruder & Dorfmeister to add their standout musical style by creating a unique compilation for these new devices. Owners of the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte will be able to enjoy an exclusive videotrack and soundtrack composed by Kruder & Dorfmeister with visuals by Fritz Fitzke. Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte Each handset comes with an assortment of mobile accessories that includes the Nokia BH-803 Bluetooth headset with Active Noise Cancellation and touch sensitive volume adjustment. Each handset also comes with a leather pouch with a linen lining and a separate matching desk stand.
