Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/value-mobi...otoyuva/21913/0 Motorola’s latest addition to their FM radio, entry-level mobiles is the W180, that’s called the MOTOYUVA in India. This is a totally simplistic mobile with a singular feature that stands out i.e. the Stereo FM radio, much like the RADIOMOTO W209. The YUVA however, has adopted a more traditional candy bar design. The display has a 128 x 128 pixel resolution with 65K colors. Its internal memory has a capacity to store 500 numbers which roughly equals up to around 70KB of space. The YUVA has no other mentionable features except that it has a USB v1.1 port that serves as a charging port as well and it also employs Motorola’s CrystalTalk technology. The big question is why the USB port? Unfortunately we don't have that information yet. The MOTOYUVA is already available in stores and is priced at Rs. 1,900

Good to hear that MNP will now be implemented asap -
Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1071112/asp/...ory_8538250.asp New Delhi, Nov. 11 (PTI): Reliance ADAG chairman Anil Ambani has accused GSM operators of “hoarding” surplus spectrum and sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention to ensure that service providers such as Vodafone and Bharti Airtel surrender excess airwaves. In a scathing attack on GSM players, who are demanding extra spectrum and have moved telecom tribunal TDSAT on new spectrum norms, Ambani said even sector regulator Trai, fair trade practices watchdog MRTPC and also the telecom tribunal have issued notices to Bharti and Vodafone for “anti-consumer practices”. It is essential that the future of telecom industry is “not undermined by a few with … narrow personal interests”, Ambani said in a letter to Singh a few days before Diwali. The letter comes after GSM lobby Cellular Operators Association of India challenged the new policy of allowing dual technology for mobile telephony and new spectrum allocation norms as recommended by the Telecom Engineering Centre.

Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1071112/asp/...ory_8538249.asp Govt ready with 3G norms New Delhi, Nov. 11: The government is likely to announce the spectrum policy for third-generation (3G) mobile services this week. Guidelines for the policy have been finalised by the telecom ministry, which is favouring auctions to distribute the spectrum. Officials of the department of telecom (DoT) said, “Under the 3G policy, all telecom companies — existing operators, licence holders and new international players — will be allowed to bid for high-end 3G spectrum.” They said the DoT was planning a special purpose vehicle to conduct the auction and might invite an international agency to set it up. “In order to keep the entire process transparent and quick, the auction may take place online,” the officials said. Issues relating to the pricing of spectrum are likely to be based on the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. In its recommendations, submitted to the government in September 2006, the regulator had proposed a base price of Rs 1,400 crore for a national 3G licence. Besides this, the base price for Mumbai, Delhi and Category A telecom circles is Rs 80 crore; Chennai, Calcutta and Category B circles, Rs 40 crore; and all other cities, Rs 15 crore. 3G mobile services support faster downloads and more data transmission, enabling operators to provide high-end services and broadband. Existing mobile networks in the country are primarily for voice and SMS communication. They have limited data capabilities. Auctions will also open the Indian market to some global telecom players. Companies such as AT&T and Verizon, who are down the pecking order for 2G licences, can bid for 3G spectrum and increase their chances of entry into one of the world’s fastest growing telecom markets. Moreover, a 3G player has the technology for advanced voice, video and data applications, making it capable of providing voice and SMS services offered by 2G operators. However, spectrum for 3G services is yet to be vacated by defence. In fact, the telecom authorities have missed many deadlines for the vacation of 3G spectrum, the first in March 2006.

Nokia Launches 8 GB N81 and N95 in India Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/mobile-pho...n-india/21625/0 World's top mobile handset maker Nokia on Tuesday introduced two new models in the N-series range, aiming to strengthen its position in the $15 billion mobile entertainment market in India. The new phones, N81 and N95 (8GB), have been priced at Rs 26,249 and Rs 35,059 respectively. "Mobile entertainment is a key growth driver for the Value Added Services (VAS) segment. Currently, it accounts for 15 billion dollars of the $63 billion Indian VAS market and constitutes 37 per cent of the $28 billion non-SMS mobile data revenue," Nokia India Business Director (Multimedia) Vineet Taneja said here. N95 is equipped with Assisted-Global Positioning System that would help consumers to locate their destinations. Mobile music (ringtones, ringback tones and full track) market has been growing in the country. It has been a major contributor to the growth of the non-voice mobile services revenue, accounting for $227 million in 2006 and expected to reach $476 million this year, the company said -

Samsung Launches New Win Mobile 6 Phone
coolrajiv posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/smart-mobi...6-phone/21484/0 Samsung has launched another new mobile. Yes, one more. This time it’s a new Windows mobile though. The SPH-M4650 (a rather lengthy name to remember), is their latest release and features a 2.8 inch touchscreen display that doesn’t support multi-touch for some reason. It also seems to have a DMB TV Tuner. Among its other features is a 2 megapixel camera and it also has Bluetooth, but whether or not it will support A2DP is not yet confirmed but in all probability, considering it’s running on Window Mobile 6.0 it just might. There’s been no word on the official price or availability of the SPH-M4650 though it’s estimated to cost about Rs. 21,700 (500,000 won). -
Source - http://www.telegraphindia.com/1071101/asp/...ory_8498694.asp Spectrum shock for GSM Govt norms tougher than Trai New Delhi, Oct. 31: The Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) today proposed tough subscriber norms for extra spectrum to GSM operators. In Calcutta, for example, an operator wanting 6.2MHz spectrum will need to have 6 lakh subscribers. Initially, when a telecom firm gets a licence, it is given 4.4MHz of spectrum free. Similarly, the new rules recommend that for 8MHz, the telecom player in Calcutta must have 20 lakh subscribers; for 10MHz, 36 lakh subscribers; for 12.4MHz, 50 lakh; and for 15MHz, 65 lakh. This is substantially higher than what the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had prescribed. However, for rural and remote regions, the norms have been eased. The regions include Haryana, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The TEC is the technical arm of the department of telecom (DoT). Its brief was to evaluate the recommendations on extra spectrum by Trai. Sudipto Basu, a telecom analyst, said, “TEC’s recommendations prove that the government is serious about increasing mobile penetration in Tier II and Tier III cities.” GSM operators are livid at the TEC proposals. The Cellular Operators Association of India, the lobby of GSM companies, today said the “exercise appears to be aimed at destroying the performing sector”. “The excessive hike in subscriber numbers was being done with a single point agenda to choke and deprive the existing GSM operators of spectrum and to facilitate a priority entry of select players into GSM,” the COAI said. It also accused the TEC, the technical wing of the department of telecom, of being completely non-transparent. COAI director general T.V. Ramachandran said the general feeling in the industry was that “it (GSM operators) was being punished for going to TDSAT (the telecom tribunal) on this issue”. Last week, the GSM operators had moved the Telecom Disputes Settlement Tribunal (TDSAT) challenging the government’s move to offer GSM licences to CDMA operators. Spectrum norms of the TEC relates only to GSM operators. CDMA operators did not provide adequate data for calculations. The TEC, which submitted the report today, has also recommended the adaptation of innovative technology by companies for efficient use of spectrum. These include in-building signal boosters or Wi-Fi equipment inside basements. Telecom operators say the newer technology will not solve the problem of spectrum crunch. Rajat Mukarji, spokesperson for Idea Cellular, said, “We are already using signal boosters to provide better clarity of voice and less call drops inside buildings, however, Wi-Fi can be used only if all handsets are compatible to this technology.” The report has also suggested a higher number of base transceiver stations or towers in a geographical area, especially in central business districts of cities that have heavy call traffic.

Imap stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It is a method of accessing electronic mail or bulletin board messages that are kept on a (possibly shared) mail server. In other words, it permits a "client" email program to access remote message stores as if they were local. For example, email stored on an IMAP server can be manipulated from a desktop computer at home, a workstation at the office, and a notebook computer while traveling, without the need to transfer messages or files back and forth between these computers. With IMAP, all your mail is stored on the server and you merely use a client to access your mail. Due to this principle it’s quite easy to have one central storage and have multiple clients in the form of your PC/wireless device, accessing this one central store. It’s also possible to sync your calendar and other settings via IMAP. Another good thing is that IMAP, is a universally supported service and has been around for a long time. The final point of iMap is that it supports "push-mail" like functionality similar to a BlackBerry and is available for free.

Source - http://www.tech2.com/india/news/smart-mobi...ovember/20391/0 Samsung's G800 to Launch in November Samsung’s latest camera phone, the triband G800, has a 5 megapixel, auto-focus camera with a xenon flash and 3x optical zoom. The camera utilizes face detection for taking better snaps. All this is neatly concealed with a lens cover for protection and style. That’s impressive enough, but just in case you’re picky and such features don’t hold you in thrall, the G800 has plenty more to... well, tickle your tech-bone. Apart form the camera, the G800 has a 2.4 inch TFT LCD display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and 256k colors. It’s equipped with 160MB of internal memory. As if that’s not enough, the G800 can be fitted with a microSD card for more memory. Connectivity-wise, the G800 is GPRS, EDGE-enabled with HSDPA for fast transfer of data. Bluetooth with A2DP compatibility and USB v2.0 come bundled. It also has an FM radio and a document viewer. The phone will hit the European market next month but there’s no word on the official price. Estimates, however, hover around Rs 24,000 (approx. $600). Stay tuned!

Source - http://www.techtree.com/India/News/Mobile_...-83911-615.html Mobile Handset Users Unsatisfied A study on the India Mobile Handset Usage and Satisfaction 2007 by International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that the overall satisfaction score of mobile handset users has declined for the first time in 3 years. Three companies that managed to remain above the industry average (in order of user satisfaction) are Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia. Motorola has also emerged as the most improved brand on satisfaction consistently over the last 3 years. Meanwhile, mobile handset users opine that mobile phones have become easier to use. Also, phones now have better voice clarity and longer battery life. Therefore, the satisfaction on these 3 parameters has increased as compared to 2006 and 2005. However, there are 2 parameters on which satisfaction has come down significantly: internal memory and entertainment. The IDC study pointed out that 3 main entertainment features -- integrated digital camera, music player, and stereo FM radio -- typically drive users to upgrade their handsets. These features have been available in mid- and high-end handsets; but now, there's a demand for these features in even the more affordable handsets. According to Shailendra Gupta, senior manager (Consumer Research) of IDC India, the average price paid for the current handset by the typical Indian mobile user is Rs.3,700. And the "incremental spend" for the next handset is roughly Rs.3,200, which means that the user is willing to spend Rs.6,900 for their next handset. Significantly, this price point has declined in the past 3 years. The study indicates that typically, a mobile handset is used for 56 minutes a day for voice communication -- an increase of 5 minutes over the 51 minutes per day a year ago. In addition, SMS usage has continued to increase in last 3 years. Today, the average SMS user sends 8 SMSes a day. This overall increase in SMS usage can be attributed to tariff charges and widespread usage of SMS by TV shows' public opinion polls -- which has been increasing year-on-year.

Source - http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News_b...how/2440929.cms Reliance bags marketing & distribution deal for Apple NEW DELHI: Reliance Retail has clinched an exclusive marketing and distribution deal with the $19.3-billion iconic maker of iPods and Mac computers, Apple, for standalone iStores. This is Reliance Retail’s first exclusive alliance with an international brand. The partnership was sealed on Monday. The first store, to be called iStore by Reliance Digital, will come up by October-end in Bangalore. This is the first time Apple is tying up with a big corporate house for distribution anywhere in the world. The iStores would be standalone stores selling Apple products ranging from Macintosh computers to iPods and later, once it’s launched in India, the latest cult offering from Apple, the iPhone. The standalone store, which will be opened just ahead of Diwali, will be spread over 2,000 sq ft and is currently under construction. Globally, Apple stores are not mere retail stores, they feature a theatre for presentations and workshops, a studio for training with Apple products, and a Genius Bar for technical support and repairs, and also offer free workshops to the public. The Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Retail will open 10 iStores by the end of the calendar year. Apple would invest in market development, said sources. Confirming the deal, a company executive said the partnership will benefit both. While it would give Apple immediate presence and scale, it would give Reliance Digital mileage as the ‘stores would be co-branded’. Reliance Digital, the consumer electronics chain of the retail venture, so far has only one store which opened earlier this year in the NCR. Apple currently has few resellers in India but no company-owned store. The company sells its products worldwide through its online stores, retail stores, direct sales force, third-party wholesalers, resellers and value-added resellers. Apple had 185 stores open as of June 30, 2007. In the Asia-Pacific, Apple has stores in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and India. Apple’s portable music player, iPod, is also sold at department stores, member-only warehouse stores, large retail chains, and specialty retail stores, apart from Apple stores. While Reliance faces trouble on the mass fresh produce retail front, it is banking on the tie-up with Apple to cater to the upwardly-mobile consumer segment. Reliance Retail has had to slow down its food and groceries stores rollout plans after facing protests from small traders in states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa in the last one month. The company sacked 1,000 employees in UP after the state government shut 10 Reliance Fresh stores. It later laid off 400 franchisees for its planned retail operations in West Bengal and has also shelved a rollout in Orissa because of protests from small traders. Reliance Retail unveiled its first stores — fruits and vegetable stores called Reliance Fresh — in November last year.
