There are US users who travel outside of US but who still prefer the ability to receive calls on their US number because they cannot afford to miss calls. Google might enable forwarding to international numbers to target such users. And there will certainly be takers for such an offer. Google has filed a patent for a system that would insert audio ads into your phone calls. The patent also describes a system for determining the caller's location in order to geographically target the ads. The ads would be played while the phone is ringing and you're waiting for a person to pick up, or at other times when you're not talking. It's not entirely clear whether Google will roll out this feature. Google provides the option to transcribe calls so that they can know what ads to play to you based on your previous conversations. If you want to forward your calls to India, there are many third party options for that. You just have to pay for the service. For eg, use localphone.com, pay 2.5 cents per minute and get your calls forwarded to your Indian number.

If google pays the terminating fees, what's illegal about it? Google could just pass the charges to the customer.

Go here and suggest "Forward calls to international phone numbers" http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/request.py?contact_type=suggest Dream On Google might allow forwarding calls to international number with charges applied for forwarding the calls.

The point of google voice is one phone number for all your phone connections, so no matter which phone you use (landline/mobile/voip) the receiver sees the GV number. You are asking for the opposite of that. And again, GV is officialy for US phones.

I had pointed this out clearly in an earlier post. Gizmo5 client has problems sending dtmf tones to google. So login to gizmocall.com using your gizmo username and password. Then try the verification process. Or if you are using google talk, try typing * before entering the verification code. for eg, if you verification code is 87, type *87 using keyboard.

Is it going through to all numbers? I can send to Reliance/Tata(cdma) and idea. SMS to airtel, vodafone and tata docomo not going through.

That is the step to choose your US google voice number. You can search for fancy numbers (like 408 0DKAILE, 218 234 5678) or/and numbers based on US area code. But most of the good numbers are already taken.

Remove the "1" from the beginning of the gizmo SIP number and try to activate using that. May not work but you can give it a try.

Go to http://phone.ipkall.com/ Register with your Gizmo Sip no and gizmo proxy(You can get the proxy info from my.gizmo.com). If ipkall approves your application, you get a free PSTN no which can be forwarded to gizmo or gtalk (via gtalk2voip). Then you can use the ipkall number to verify with google. Approval takes a couple of days.

May be it was a transparent proxy. Try googling for free US anonymous proxy.

Why don't you try adding this number to GV and try to verify instead of assuming it won't work? Google can call gizmo numbers, just choose gizmo from the drop down list when adding the phone.

Find a working public US proxy and change your browser network connection settings to use that proxy and access google voice page.
-
After you have created your gizmo5 account, login at https://my.gizmo5.com using your gizmo5 username and password. You get your SIP phone no there. Also, while you are on that page, turn off Voicemail. Otherwise all unattended calls on GV will go to gizmo5 voicemail.

I have so far used 4 gizmo5 numbers with my GV accounts. And they are free. Besides, google itself provides the option to select gizmo in the phone options. And here is the Grandcentral (former google voice) help page for using gizmo with google voice http://www.grandcentral.com/howitworks/gizmo

For all those of you who need a US phone number, download gizmo5 client and create an account. This gives you a free US phone number. Now add this phone number to your google voice account for verification. Now, go to https://www.gizmocall.com/ and login using your gizmo username and password.Click on verify phone in GV account Logging into gizmocall.com is important because the gizmo5 desktop client has problems sending dtmf tones back to google. But the web based client works fine. When google calls for verification, enter the code and you get verified. Now you can make and receive US calls using your google account and gizmo5.

You still need a US based IP address. Use a public US proxy. However, proxy is not need to get an invite.

My airtel validity was supposed to expire yesterday. But it has been extended to April 2012 without paying anything.

Its a US number, Why should google be approved by TRAI?
-
The USA numbers that you get from other providers are mostly SIP numbers, they cannot be reached from regular PSTN phones. Google provides a PSTN number. Also international SMS is free as of now, even though they don't officially support it. I have sent SMSes to Australia, New zealand and France and they are going through.

The invites are being sent out on first come first served basis. Those who registered 3 months back are getting their numbers now.
