That wud make ur work easier at the courts!!

Beware! Virus hits mobile phones December 10, 2004 16:18 IST Rediff.com If your cellphone bill exceeds your wildest dreams next time, beware! Your handset is being hacked into by a deadly virus, that is capable of controlling your cellphone and even destroying the data stored in the mobiles, a top official of a leading anti-virus and Internet content security firm warned on Friday. "The virus threat to mobile phones are real and could be more deadly than you could imagine," Niraj Kaushik, country manager (India) of Nasdaq-listed Trend Micro Inc, which just released a free trial of new protection for mobile devices, 'malware' (malicious software) that attack mobile phones, said in Chennai. Considering that the mobile phones are always "switched on and networked", the chances of virus attacks are much more than on computers, he said. Due to the rising popularity of data-centric mobile phones and personal digital assistants, these devices could become an attractive target for virus writers in the future, Kaushik warned. Already, three malware programmes that affect mobile phones were detected during November, but these were considered harmless. However, a fourth virus, which was detected in December first week, was found to be very destructive. "This virus allowed hackers to control your cellphone," Kaushik said. All the virus attacks were witnessed on multi-functional smart phones, that have latest features like Internet connectivity and in-built cameras.

Now, this scares me!! Maybe i must visit Rimweb once in a blue moon! j/k! E-mails a big threat to IQ! April 23, 2005 06:28 IST Rediff.com People who constantly write e-mails / text messages and attend phone calls suffer a greater loss of IQ and concentration than those who smoke marijuana, says a report in The Guardian quoting a recent study. And men are most at risk. Dr Glenn Wilson, a psychologist at King's College, London University, who conducted a survey for technology major Hewlett Packard, says: "It is obvious that full concentration is impossible when we have one eye on e-mails or text messages." "We found that mental performance, the capability of the brain, was also reduced. Workers cannot think as well when they are worrying about e-mail or voicemails. It effectively reduces their IQ," says Wilson. This 'infomania' distracts workers, lowers productivity, and causes a reduction in mental capability equal to a loss of ten IQ points as the brains suffer from information overload, says the study. The tests conducted on 1,000 volunteers showed that tapping away on a mobile phone or a computer keypad knocks ten points off your IQ, while you drop only four points on smoking marijuana. More than 60 per cent of those surveyed admitted to being e-mail and text addicts. Wilson also suggested that the 'modern culture of information could cause a permanent drop in intelligence.' "The impairment only lasts for as long as the distraction. But you have to ask whether our current obsession with constant communication is causing long-term damage to concentration and mental ability," says Wilson. Many companies have banned their employees from e-mailing as the information overload is believed to cost corporates millions in productivity loss annually. Despite this being the age of multi-tasking, the research reveals that the human brain finds it hard to manage lots of tasks at one time, thus reducing its efficiency. "This is a very real and widespread phenomenon. We found that this obsession with looking at messages, if unchecked, will damage a worker's performance by reducing their mental sharpness. Companies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working," says Wilson. How to deal with the problem "The most effective way to deal with the problem," says Wilson, "is to switch these things off. We have to learn to control technology rather than letting it control us." But the fact that people constantly break their concentration in order to answer and check these messages shows that they are obsessed with technology. Almost two out three people check their electronic messages out of office hours and when on holiday. Half of those surveyed said they replied to e-mails within an hour of receiving them.

TRAI slashes bandwidth prices April 21, 2005 14:31 IST Last Updated: April 21, 2005 14:52 IST Rediff.com Close on the heels of reducing the tariff for international bandwidth, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Thursday slashed tariff for domestic bandwidth (domestic leased circuit) between 3 to 70 per cent, a move which would boost broadband penetration in the country. The telecom regulator has reduced ceiling tariff for 64 kbps, 128 kbps, 256 kbps by 54 per cent to Rs 0.44 lakh, Rs 0.79 lakh and Rs 1.36 lakh compared to the existing market rate of Rs 0.96 lakh, Rs 1.72 lakh and Rs 2.97 lakh respectively, TRAI said in a release. The revised ceiling tariff for E1 (speed of 2 mbps) has been cut 3 per cent to Rs 8.50 lakh from the market rate of Rs 8.80 lakh. Tariff for DS-3 (45 mbps) has been reduced 67 per cent at Rs 62 lakh compared to the existing market rate of Rs 185 lakh while for STM-1 (155 mbps) category, the tariff has been cut 70 per cent at Rs 165 lakh from the existing market rate of Rs 554 lakh, it said. The ceiling tariff prescribed by the order will take effect from May 1, 2005. TRAI will review the situation with regard to developments in the DLC segment after a year. Domestic leased circuit is the medium of carriage of data and voice services within the country. The service is provided by basic service operators, unified access service licensees, national long distance operators and infrastructure service providers category II. The key users of the service in the country are Internet Service Providers, IT and IT-enabled Service Enterprises like BPO units and telecom service providers. The tariffs fixed are in the nature of ceiling tariffs and operators are at liberty to offer rates that are lower than the ceiling fixed by TRAI. This may lead to reduction in broadband prices by service providers. While the telecom regulator has cut domestic bandwidth prices, VSNL had earlier challenged its order to reduce international bandwidth prices in telecom tribunal TDSAT. TRAI said the competition was not fully effective in the provision of DLCs despite more players in the market. Further, rapid technological advances have sharply reduced the unit cost of long haul bandwidth but the reduction witnessed in the leased line tariffs is not commensurate with reduction witnessed in the cost of providing the services. The reduction in the tariff for leased circuits seen in the market was largely restricted to selective routes and in selective capacities, it said, adding a competitively priced DLC service was fundamental to increase broadband penetration in the country.

Damn kewl !

I understand ur point linuxguy. But the issue is that these ppl dont have huge networks all over the city. Their Overheads are less and hence they provide good connections at cheap rates. Secondly all the biggies (read RIM, MTNL, TATA) affect them largely. My ISP comes to me every 6-8 months n reduces my tariff himself!

Wireless Net access set to mushroom Joji Thomas Philip in New Delhi | April 04, 2005 09:05 IST Rediff.com Here is a tip for those planning to buy a laptop: shell out Rs 2,000-3,000 more but go in for a Wi-fi enabled one. Hotspot numbers in India are set to jump 10 times to touch 3,500 by December, following the government's decision to delicense the 2.4 Gigahertz and the 5.1 Ghz bands, on which the platform works. Hotspots are locations where one can access the Internet without the help of cables. At present there are around 350-odd hotspots in the country. Industry analysts expect most airports, hotels, cafes, restaurants, major railway stations and hospitals will opt for wireless connectivity. Internet service provider Dishnet has already started work on a Rs 250 crore (Rs 2.5 billion) project to set up 6,000 hotspots across 180 cities, of which over 2,000 will be operational by December. According to Paramjit Singh Puri, head (India and Asia Pacific), Pronto Networks, which has bagged the contract for setting up Dishnet's Wi-fi centres, the first commercial launch of about 200 hotspots is scheduled for June. Chennai-based Microsense, which currently operates around 200 hotspots, has also announced plans to set up an additional 1,000 centres over the next six months. Bharti Tele-Ventures and Tata Teleservices executives said they were also in the process of adding Wi-fi platforms to their network. However, service providers are also gearing up for launching WiMax, a technology that offers wireless connectivity over a 2-10 km radius. Operators like Tata, Reliance, Bharti, MTNL and BSNL have started testing over Motorola's Canopy-based WiMax platform. The first deployment is expected by October. "Currently, unbundling prevents internet service providers from entering the broadband market. Delicensing brings in new meaning to corporate connectivity, and many companies will now become WiFi-enabled. With standalone players entering this sector, competition will drive numbers," said Amitab Singhal, president, Internet Service Providers Association of India. Even public sector companies have joined the bandwagon. "From about 25 hotspots at present, we have set a target of 200 in Delhi and Mumbai by December," said an MTNL executive. "We have just completed a successful pilot project. We will soon float tenders for setting up 300 hotspots, covering the metros and major cities," said a BSNL executive. Unlike in the past, customers will no longer have to change the settings on their laptops according to the location. "We are offering countrywide inter-service roaming along with a slew of value-added services such a voice protocol network, nationwide support, post-paid and pre-paid packages," said Deepak Talwar, director, Micronesia Pvt Ltd. The setting up of hotspots and WiFi networks will also change the future of how business is conducted. With WiFi on handsets, there is bound to be a steep demand for smart handheld devises that are used in department stores, hospitals, shopping complexes and other business sectors. To top it, WiFi tariffs in the country, which were earlier among the highest in the world, have witnessed a 100 per cent fall over the last 12 months. For instance, Microsense's pre-paid 100-hour card now comes at Rs 990.
