Bharti cuts ISD, STD rates January 20, 2005 19:22 IST Rediff.com Initiating a fresh round of price war, Bharti, offering telecom services under the AirTel brand, on Thursday reduced long distance mobile tariffs by upto Rs 1.75 per minute for ISD and 35 paise for STD calls. The company lowered the rates following Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's new levy regime, which reduced the access deficit charge paid by private operators to PSUs. The new rates will come into effect from February 1, the company said in a statement in New Delhi. More than one crore (10 million) Airtel customers would benefit from the cut. The tariffs announced are radically lower than the existing rates and hence would further drive penetration of mobile telephony in the country. ISD tariffs have been reduced by Rs 1.75/min and STD tariffs have been reduced by Rs 0.35/min on the current tariffs based on simple average ADC reduction of Rs 0.20/- for calls between 50- 200 kms and Rs 0.50 /min for calls >200 kms. Announcing the new tariffs, Manoj Kohli, president (mobility), Bharti Tele-Ventures, said, "Airtel has once again taken the lead in announcing reduction in mobile tariffs for its customers across the country. The benefits extended are in keeping with our commitment to pass on the benefits of reduction in ADC, directly to our customers. "The tariffs announced are simple, innovative and provide the best value for money to our customers. This we believe will fuel new acquisitions and also spur usage increase. What's more, Airtel customers will continue to enjoy special Airtel to Airtel STD Tariffs at Rs 2/- min." Bharti Tele-Ventures is one of India's leading private sector provider of tele-communications services with an aggregate of 10.63 million customers as of end of December '04, consisting of approximately 9.83 million mobile customers. The company today offers mobile services in 21 out of 23 circles in India. The company also provides fixed - line services and Internet access over DSL in 6 circles. The company also has a submarine cable landing station at Chennai, which connects the submarine cable connecting Chennai and Singapore.

Now, DoT hauls up Tata January 20, 2005 | 18:32 IST Rediff.com The Department of Telecom has issued a show cause notice to Tata Teleservices on their recently-launched Push-To-Talk services to verify the compliance with licence terms and conditions. DoT has sought explanation on a few issues, including compliance to the numbering plan and access charges. DoT has given a time of three days until Friday for the Tatas to explain. This is the second show-cause notice by DoT to Tata Teleservices within a week. DoT had also sent a notice on the company's fixed wireless phones 'Walky', which has been positioned as a mobile phone. Tata officials confirmed the receipt of the show cause notice but declined to comment. Tatas had launched the Push-to-Talk services in December 2004, offering customers the facility to make unlimited calls without any long distance or roaming charges within the network on a monthly rental of just Rs 99. The PTT service, which is the first by any mobile operator in the country, will offer instant connectivity across the country and Internet surfing at 3G speeds. According to the Tatas, upto four subscribers sitting anywhere in the country can talk to each other at a cost of Rs 99 each.

SMS in regional languages with Tegic's software January 20, 2005 17:26 IST Rediff.com US-based Tegic Communications will launch the Hindi version of its upgraded T9 text input software for instant mobile messages in the Indian market in April. "We will launch version 7.2 of T9 text input software in Hindi by end of the first quarter or early Q2 and more languages like English, Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi and Urdu will follow to enhance the features of T9, including speedy word completion and next word prediction", Ray Tsuchiyama, senior vice president, Tegic Communications, said in New Delhi. He said mobile handset manufacturers like LG, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens and Sony Ericcson were already using T9 software for Indian mobile users. However, a current user of T9 software-enabled handset cannot upgrade to 7.2 version in the existing handset. Tegic has started talking to the same vendors for selling its version 7.2 software, he said. "Version 7.2 offers enhanced multi-lingual support, making it easier for users to switch back and forth between languages while sending messages. It automatically predicts the word that the user is most likely to use", he said. Tegic Communications is a wholly-owned subsidiary of America Online Inc.

I quite agree with Chandramauli... whtever the case maybe, the overall bill doesn't change drastically! Remember that 25 bucks added extra on Joy Plans after reducing call rates? Anyways, doesn't make a difference if DAPO call rates rn't reduced, coz if STD is the only hitch, then use IndiaCard or Free Mins on Rewards!
