  1. Banned Drugs In India

Now this is becoming an interesting discussion. Something tht is with all of us! I wasn't open to this either earlier. It was only after i read something that completely changed my perspective of looking at Health - Good Health - Optimal Health!I cant recollect the name of the book that i read. I'll get it for u'll. Its something that any1 could understand from. It does get a lil technical with medical terms in it. But what it was all abt is that its vital for us to not look at health only when we get sick. When we fall sick and go to the doctor, we are talking abt the Sickness Industry! And when we try n reach Optimal Health which will prevent us to go sick, gives rise to the new emerging Wellness Industry! Pretty interesting stuff! I'll get the name of the book soon. What say redshift! Wht exactly covers preventive and "social" medicine?

  8. Banned Drugs In India

Interesting Insight @ redshift! So wht shud a "lay man" do? is there any way for them to find out whts right n whts wrong?
  9. Google Desktop Search.

Its like a "search" utility for the PC? Something similar to what MS adds to its OS, right? As of now, Desktop searches thru only 4 types of File Types i.e. Word, Excel, PPT & Emails. So does that mean, it wudn't search other types like CDR, DWG?
  10. Banned Drugs In India

Irony is that we try to take care of our health only when we fall sick. Its time to get "well" much b4 in advance such that we can delay some obvious sicknesses!

  13. Trai Going To Announce Reduced Tariffs

BSNL wants cut in ADC but no cut in revenue Prachi Verma, New Delhi | November 29, 2004 ZDNET Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is in favour of reduction in access deficit charges (ADC), according to a company official. But there's a rider. The telecom PSU insists that the total revenue that it gets from ADC must not decrease. For instance, with the increase in the number of cellphone users over a period of time, the impact of ADC could be spread out. In such a scenario, even with lower ADC, the total revenue from it could remain steady. "We support the reduction in ADC but we want an assurance (from the government) that the total revenue will not change. The ADC revenue amount is currently estimated to be over Rs 5,000 crore," a senior BSNL official told. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman Pradip Baijal has already pointed out that in the next two to three weeks, a revised ADC would be announced. "The minister had also earlier indicated that the ADC would be reduced and we are working on it. As announced earlier, the ADC might come down to zero in the next two-and-a-half years," Mr Baijal told. Mr Baijal added that the ADC was bound to reduce with the rise in the number of minutes and average revenue per user (Arpu). The total number of telephone users is currently 80 million, out of which 45 million are mobile subscribers. The total number of telephone users till about a year ago was only 50 million. The five members of Trai would take a call on the ADC order soon, Mr Baijal said. Meanwhile, private telecom operators are pushing for elimination of ADC. They claim that customers would benefit once the the charge is removed. Trai had also proposed that a reduction in ADC would lead to lower charges on long-distance calls and would help in curbing the grey market. Private operators are opposed to paying the charges on domestic calls on the ground that BSNL was misusing the money collected. Trai imposed a levy in the form of ADC on national and international calls to subsidise rural telephony.
  14. Rad Bags Major Indian Order

RAD Bags Major Indian Order Telecomweb.com Israel's RAD Data Communications landed an order for thousands of fiber-optic modems in what is described as "one of the largest nationwide telecommunications projects that has ever been undertaken in India." The order, from an unidentified carrier, is for about $1.5 million worth of modems to build a massive cellular backhaul network. RAD said its FOM-E1 fiber-optic modems will be used to connect approximately 5,000 outdoor base transceiver stations and base station controllers. The E1, which converts an electrical signal into optical signal, has a range of as far as 100 kilometers. The order also covers several hundred of RAD's ASMi-52 SHDSL modems for backhaul over copper links. The unit delivers as much as 2.3 Mb/s over two-wire and 4.6 Mb/s over four-wire links. Delivery of the modems begins immediately, with the entire order scheduled to be delivered by April 2005. The win extends RAD's dominance of the Indian baseband and HDSL market, in which it holds a 70-percent market share. It won that share in good part by its partnership with MRO-TEK, a local company that is both RAD's exclusive distributor in India and its partner in a joint venture in Bangalore's "Electronics City," where RAD makes versions of its products tailored specifically to the requirements of the Indian market.

  21. The Rs 14.72 Lakh Cellphone!

The Rs 14.72 lakh cellphone! September 23, 2004 Rediff.com Vertu. It's not exactly a household name like Nokia, but handcrafted phones manufactured by Vertu, a unit of cellphone giant Nokia, are the world's most expensive cellphones. And how much does a Vertu Signature collection cellphone cost? A cool $32,000 (Rs 14.72 lakh)! For those who think that the phones come packed with some stunning features, here's a tip: it can only make voice calls, send SMS text messages or record appointments. It can neither shoot pictures nor do anything that your current mobile phone cannot. But despite the astronomical price tag, the Vertu range of mobile phones is quickly becoming a status symbol for the rich and the famous. Contrary to the perception that Asians are less given to buying super expensive gadgets, it is in Asia that the Vertu phones are selling like hot cakes; especially in Hong Kong, China, Indonesia and Singapore. Nokia's Vertu unit is London-based, but has offices in New York, Paris, Singapore and Hong Kong and exclusive dealers in 20 other countries. The flagship Vertu phone is a platinum-cased Signature model that costs $32,000. Its yellow gold version costs $18,500. The cheapest Vertu phone is the leather-clad Ascent model that cost only $4,700. The Vertu brochure says that the Signature Collection epitomises Vertu's vision of luxury personal communication: a compelling combination of stunningly clear sound quality, sensuous materials, impeccable craftsmanship and peerless personal service. The Vertu Signature model has a talk time of 3-6 hours and a stand by of 100-200 hours. It weighs 215 gms; and measures 42mm x 122mm x 15.5mm. It has a high-resolution dynamic display screen, an internal antenna with external whip, hands-free capability, internal vibration alert, optimal voice clarity, 'exclusively created ringing tunes generated using synthesis technology and played back on a high-fidelity speaker', precision-engineered key switches with jewelled bearings, alarm clock and a large user memory with 220 calendar notes, 100 text messages, up to 1,000 names in phonebook. Vertu Signature comprises more than 400 separate parts, many sourced from suppliers to the world's finest watchmakers, with over 180 being totally unique. This compares with 30 parts found on a standard mobile phone. It is this pioneering attention to detail that epitomises what is perhaps the very essence of luxury - the relentless pursuit of perfection, and a refusal to settle for less. -- Agencies
