  3. New Rates For R-connect

Wht i think after reading that document that only if the user opts for Joy149 plan(New One) alongwith Freedom/Platinum Plans, then the monthly rental would be waived off for the first three months! Pretty simple. It has nothing to do with ur commitment of 650/1500 for R-Connect. I'm still to understand whether this waiver is for New Connections or would it be for Existing subscribers also!
  4. Look out for Reliance's new Initiative! I mean, let the dead die in peace yaar! Well whtever, Atleast fellow architects are getting quite some jobs, huh? Can't attend the funeral? Watch it online Joydeep Ray & Mitul Thakkar in Ahmedabad | November 25, 2004 09:44 IST Rediff.com Here's another Indian ritual that's moving online. Non-resident Gujaratis who can't make it to the funeral of a loved one back home will soon be able to watch the last rites on the Net. To be built in Vadodara, the high-tech crematorium, called the Moksha Dham, will be funded by the Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited, a Reliance group company. The other undertakers are the Vadodara Municipal Corporation and the Rotary Club, which will operate the outfit initially. To be operational be June 2005, the Moksha Dham will have equipment for the live webcast of cremations through a bandwidth connection provided by Reliance Infocomm. The relatives of the dead family member will also be able to send their condolence messages from their homes in the US, UK or Canada. A memorandum of understanding will be signed shortly between the VMC, the Rotary Club and IPCL, which has agreed to contribute Rs 1 crore (Rs 150 million) for the project. Architecture firm Karan Grover and Associates will design the crematorium, which will also house a prayer hall that can accommodate 1,000 people at a time. The facilities would be offered to non-resident Gujaratis and their family members locally for a nominal fee, which would be decided later, said a VMC official. Initially, there will be two high-capacity web cameras installed at the Moksha Dham. An exclusive webpage would be created through which those who have registered can connect to the Moksha Dham. Family and friends of the dead person can avail of chat facilities too. Perhaps it is in the fitness of things that this unique project is taking off in Gujarat. There are thousands of Gujaratis living abroad, who may face problems coming home to attend a funeral. For instance, flights may be booked solid, and it may be days after a bereavement in the family that people reach home. And sometimes there are circumstances where they may not be able to travel at all. "The aim behind this unique project is to enable family members, relatives and friends of the dead person to be with their relatives virtually during their time of grief," said Jagdish Thakkar, project coordinator, on behalf of Rotary Club, Jawaharnagar. Thakkar added: "The crematorium will be dedicated to the late Dhirubhai Ambani, the Reliance group founder. It will be a first of its kind facility in India and we are able to develop it because IPCL and Reliance Infocomm are offering us their unconditional financial and technical help," Thakkar told Business Standard. The Rotary Club will operate the facility for five years from the date of commissioning and the VMC will be offered to run the place after that period if the club wants to opt out. The Moksha Dham model is being planned for other cities in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad and Mehsana, which are NRI hubs.

650/month for 1GB download is good for homeusers! But damn, it says that "Will be available to all new customers." does that mean ppl who've never opted for a data plan will not get these new plans on their existing phones? Is there any way to let the user monitor his daily usage?
  9. Students Suspended For Sexually Explicit Mms

a pretty sad thing thts struck india now as well! Delhi school sex video now on Internet By: Shradha Sukumaran November 28, 2004 Mid-day.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Delhi schoolgirl video controversy has now blown into India’s own Paris Hilton-Rick Solomon story. The sexually-explicit footage was shot by the girl’s own classmate on his mobile phone and circulated in schools all over the city about two weeks ago. Now, the home video has surfaced on the net, in different porn sites. According to the link, nearly 29,000 surfers have already viewed the video, many of whom have posted their comments on the girl “in the white school uniform”. The clip shocked Delhi schools and parents, prompting a debate into allowing children to have camera-enabled phones. Both the girl and the boy were expelled from Delhi Public School, but the video has already passed through hundreds of students in the capital. With it now posted on the web, this Delhi schoolgirl is now infamous. Camera-enabled phones have already become controversial all over the world. Japan has taken note of phone-stalkers, the US is coming down on “up-skirt” pictures, UK has forbidden it in strip clubs and theatres, and countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have banned it. Although hoteliers in Mumbai are considering banning camera-enabled cell phones from the private areas of hotels such as swimming pools, saunas, spas and changing rooms due to privacy concerns, the phones itself are only catching on in India now. According to the Asian School of Cyberlaws in Pune, it is because of this that mobile phone videos posted on pornsites is a new phenomenon. In this case, as the girl is underage, the issue also enters the realm of child pornography. “This falls into the Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. Its sentence is five years of imprisonment for the first offence, or a fine of Rs 1 lakh and ten years of imprisonment for every subsequent offence, or a fine of Rs 2 lakh,” says Vicky Jaiswal, head of education and consultation at the Asian School, adding that this sentence is irrespective of whether it is a child pornographic act. This is the sentence for electronic pornography. However, Jaiswal points out that it is difficult to keep track or monitor these clips because there are almost four crore pornographic websites. “Often, the lady in the clip has no clue that her picture is on the net.”

  16. I jus gave an interview last evening! And this was so timed, that it was quite amusing to read! Though the issue is quite ambiguous n can be discussed at length... Giving an interview? Try cell snooping! November 26, 2004 Rediff.com A senior HR person at a telecom service provider once told me an entertaining story. A three-person panel from the TSP interviewed someone for an exec post. The panel asked the interviewee to wait outside while it fixed on terms of employment, compensation and so on. Then they called him back in and hired him after a little to-and-fro on the terms. Months later, the hire confessed that he had gained a critical edge in negotiations. He covertly left a live cellphone on in the interview room and eavesdropped on the panel's deliberations on a second cellphone while waiting outside and ostensibly having a casual chat with a friend. It was a creative little 'snoop' and there is a delicious irony in hoisting a TSP with its own petard, so to speak. But many corporations as well as law enforcement agencies have started to leverage cell technologies into performing more complex surveillance tasks. Any cellphone network can locate a call to within the radius of the originating cell -- that is, a square km, at most, in an urban locale. But the Nextel-type network offers mobile locator services that track even switched-off phones continuously, to within a few feet. All it needs is an Global Positioning System-enabled instrument that broadcasts constantly. Truckers, public transport services, couriers, emergency rescue personnel, shipping agents and so on find detailed locational information absolutely invaluable. It adds hugely to operational efficiency. But corporations have also started using mobile locator services to track skiving employees and people with itchy feet. If the phone logs too many hours in bars, or the 'phone' visits the offices of a rival, the company knows it has a problem. With devices such as the Blackberry that offers Net/e-mail access, the employer might also choose to monitor mobile surfing activity in the same way that many offices monitor network e-mails. There are legal limitations about the manner in which such evidence may be obtained and used. But the fact that cellphone data can be easily accessed means that it will be, in a less-than-perfect world. An employer who is paying the bill has pretty much a free hand when it comes to snooping. Cellphone surveillance leads to less goofing off, it reduces industrial espionage, curtails sexual harassment and so on. In law enforcement cases, cellphone data can be backed up years at a time and used as evidence. In the past few years, there have been several high-profile cases where cellphone evidence has been crucial. Cronjegate was the beginning; the Delhi Police's case about match-fixing was built on cellphone records. The Kanchi Shankaracharya's arrest on conspiracy charges is also largely based on cellphone conversations. The quashed Tada case against lecturer S A R Geelani was completely based on cellphone calls, and so are several ongoing Mumbai mob cases. The statements of some politicians and members of the Gujarat administration about their actions and whereabouts during the riots have also been recently challenged through cellphone records by a newspaper doing a series of investigative reports. The police routinely reviews cellphone data when a certain type of case comes up. So do divorce lawyers if they can get hold of it. Cellphone records can prove dreadfully embarrassing even when it isn't actual evidence of criminality. It's been cited several times in divorce cases. Sooner, rather than later, the Bollywood rags one flips through at hair-dressing saloons will also start using cell records to track the activities of movie stars. Can you ask an employer about its cell-surveillance policy? Yes, but you won't get a straight answer. Can you ask if your cell is being monitored by the police? Raising the subject might lead to harassment. Can you access cell-data if you think your spouse is fooling around? Yes, if you're paying the bill. How long is such data available? Indefinitely. The snooper we referred to above is still working for the TSP. He wasn't sacked after the company got to know about his eavesdropping. That just highlights the moral ambiguities. How long will it take for codes and policies to evolve around this technological space?

Someone who reads this first and then gets this "MMS" shud save it in "favourites" and we could all review it.
  19. Reliance Info fined Rs 150 crore November 26, 2004 17:25 IST Rediff.com The department of telecom on Friday imposed a penalty of Rs 150 crore (Rs 1.5 billion) on Reliance Infocomm for violating licence conditions by routing international calls as local ones. The department has given Reliance seven days to respond to the notice as to why this penalty should not be imposed. When contacted, top officials of Reliance confirmed the receipt of the notice and said the company would seek extension of the time period. This is besides the payment of about Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) made by Reliance to Bharat Sanchar Nigam against a claim of over Rs 255 crore (Rs 2.55 billion) for avoiding payment of access deficit charge of Rs 4.25 per minute on incoming international calls. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam has also claimed Rs 309 crore (Rs 3.09 billion) under the same clause. DoT took the decision to impose the penalty after seeking legal opinion from the Law Ministry. Even as Reliance had submitted its reply to DoT's first show cause notice on October 20, the department, after internal examination of the reply and legal consultation, took the decision to impose the penalty. Meanwhile, Reliance had approached the Delhi High Court seeking to restrain BSNL from disconnecting the Points of Interconnection till the final outcome of the controversy of routing of calls. Though the Delhi High Court had agreed to Reliance's demand, BSNL challenged Delhi High Court's order and filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court saying the High Court does not have the jurisdiction to entertain such case as per the TRAI Act. The case is slated to be heard on December 3. As per the licensing conditions, DoT can slap up to Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) penalty for each circle for the first offence and even take the action of cancelling the licence in case the operator continues to violate them. DoT, however, is of the opinion that there was no loss to the exchequer. Financial losses have been caused only to BSNL and MTNL in terms of non-payment of access deficit charge to the tune of Rs 4.25 per minute on incoming international calls.

  21. Reliance "Ownership Issues"

Things are getting quite mucky with this... I was kept in the dark: Anil BS Bureau in New Delhi | November 26, 2004 11:12 IST Rediff.com Anil Ambani has written to his brother Mukesh, saying his powers as vice-chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries have been diluted by "keeping him completely in the dark". The four-page letter to Mukesh Ambani on October 25 came three weeks before the Reliance Industries chairman and managing director admitted to a TV channel that there were ownership issues in the company. Anil Ambani's letter also raised issues of corporate governance over the introduction and clearance of a supplementary agenda during the company's board meeting on July 27. The agenda sought to curtail Anil Ambani's powers by stating that he "will carry out orders and directions given by the board and his functions will be under the overall authority of the chairman and managing director". The letter says such "redefinition of powers of the managing directors is not in accordance with the law, and is in conflict with the provisions of the Companies Act, 1956, the memorandum and articles of association of our company, and the agreements approved by the shareholders for appointment of managing directors". When contacted, a Reliance Industries spokesperson said he had no comments to offer on the issue and was "in no position to help". The spokesperson suggested that the question be directed to K Sethuraman, senior vice-president and company secretary. But repeated phone calls to Sethuraman's office yielded no response. "He is out of his cabin and would call back, if required," his secretary said. That the tension between the brothers has been building for quite some time is evident from an e-mail sent by Anil Ambani to his brother on July 30, three days after the board meeting. "There appears to be more than meets the eye... (The) undue haste with which the draft minutes were prepared is causing me concern that there may be an ulterior motive and design," the e-mail says. In his letter, Anil Ambani asked his brother to keep the supplementary agenda (item no 17 of the draft minutes) in abeyance till a final decision was taken on "a mutually agreed basis". "However, if this is not acceptable to the chairman, my views may kindly be placed on record and taken into consideration by the board," the letter adds. Anil Ambani's letter says the supplementary agenda was introduced without the vice-chairman and managing director's knowledge even though some of the other directors on the Reliance Industries board, and several employees, were aware of the move. The agenda, Anil Ambani said, had a misleading title suggesting it was essentially concerned with the formation of a health, safety and environment committee. "The clubbing together of a very substantive proposal on redefinition of the powers of the MDs with this unrelated subject obscured its real purpose and prevented a proper appreciation of its consequences," he said. The letter also says the board did not discuss the issue of redefinition of the powers of the MDs, as "incorrectly stated in the minutes". The discussions, lasting barely two minutes, were only in relation to the composition of the health committee, it adds. Specifically, the proposed redefinition of the powers of the MDs "reflected a substantial variation of the equation as had existed in Reliance for the past two decades, and this clearly required intensive discussion in the board", the letter says. Anil Ambani also pointed out that contrary to claims, the directors did not unanimously approve the resolution. "The fact is there were no discussions, and there was no vote. The incorrectness of the minutes is evident from the fact that even I am supposed to have voted in favour of the proposed resolution. Clearly, I as VC & MD, would not vote for the prejudicial variation of my existing authorities and powers," he said. The letter has sharply criticised the "unseemly and unprecedented haste" shown in the preparation of the draft minutes, and in obtaining confirmation from other directors on the date of the board meeting, before even showing them to the vice-chairman of the company. Besides, the minutes were not sent to him till two days after the board meeting, Anil Ambani's letter says. Under the practice followed by Reliance Industries for over 10 years, draft minutes of board meetings are prepared 20-30 days after the meetings, circulated to the two managing directors for confirmation, and then sent to the other directors, the letter says. Anil Ambani said he had expressed his concern at the turn of events to a few directors on July 30. The letter adds that the episode is a "sad reflection... of how we are seeking to preserve and carry forward the legacy and past traditions of Dhirubhai Ambani". Anil Ambani's letter says almost 90 days after his e-mails to Mukesh he had received no acknowledgement from his brother. "Instead, it has been communicated to me on the CMD's behalf that the matter is final and cannot be altered," the letter says. 'Many long days ahead' Reliance Energy Chairman and Managing Director Anil Ambani said on Thursday he would "continue to maintain his silence on the issue till an appropriate time". "If there is a need and it arises, I shall speak at an appropriate time," he told the waiting media at the Reliance Centre in Mumbai. On the mass resignations from the Reliance Energy board, Anil Ambani said, "I have received the resignations and the (Reliance Energy) board will consider the resignations." Ambani refused to be drawn into any discussion on the "ownership issue", saying grimly, "This has been a long day and there will be many long hours and days."

  23. SC to hear Reliance-BSNL case on Dec 3 November 25, 2004 14:29 IST Rediff.com The Supreme Court on Thursday fixed December 3 as the next date of hearing on a petition filed by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd challenging a Delhi high court interim order restraining the PSU from disconnecting the Points of Interconnection with Reliance over the issue of passing international calls as local ones. When the matter was mentioned, a bench headed by Justice N Santosh Hegde directed the listing for hearing on December 3. BSNL has said the Delhi high court does not have the jurisdiction to entertain the petition filed by Reliance as the TRAI Act has categorically ousted the jurisdiction of the courts to entertain such matters. The Delhi high court had asked BSNL to maintain status quo on the issue of interconnection agreement with Reliance until the court decided on the issue. The HC had directed Reliance to deposit Rs 40 crore (Rs 400 million) with BSNL. Different field units of BSNL have imposed a total amount of Rs 255 crore (Rs 2.55 billion) on Reliance for passing international calls as local ones, thereby causing revenue losses to the PSU.
  24. Reliance "Ownership Issues"

'No govt role in Ambani issue' November 25, 2004 14:13 IST Rediff.com Union Company Affairs Minister P C Gupta said on Thursday that the government has no role to play in the "ownership differences" in Reliance Industries Ltd as the management of the company is in perfect order. "There can be problems between partners and there are ways to solve it. There is no role for the Centre in this (ownership issue)," Gupta said responding to queries of newspersons in Mumbai on the sidelines of National Accounting Convention. The minister said the government role would come only if there are problems with the management. On a query on disclosure of holdings by promoters, he said, "Promoters do disclose their holdings and it must have been done in this case (RIL) also." Promotors are free to invest directly or through investment companies, he added. 6 Reliance Energy directors resign November 25, 2004 14:55 IST Last Updated: November 25, 2004 15:13 IST Rediff.com Six directors of Reliance Energy Ltd resigned on Thursday as differences between the Ambani brothers showed no signs of abating. Those who resigned from the Board of Directors of Reliance Energy, handled by Anil Ambani, the younger of the two, are Satish Seth, executive chairman, S C Gupta, J P Chalsani, K M Mankad, J Ramachandran, an independent director, and Amitabh Jhunjhunwala. No reasons were given for their resignation. Since it is a listed company, the resignation has been intimated to the Bombay Stock Exchange, company officials said. Mankad, Gupta and Chalasani are whole-time directors in charge of finance, operations and business development respectively. Jhunjhunwala represents the Reliance Industries Ltd on the board. The resignations come in the midst of reports of serious differences between the brothers. Three days ago Mukesh had issued a statement that there were no "ownership issues" which he said had been settled during the lifetime of their late father Dhirubhai Ambani. He followed it up with an e-mail message to 80,000 employees of the group that he -- the chairman and managing director -- was the final authority in all matters concerning Reliance. Anil was expected to make a public statement but has so far chosen not to do it.
