World's hottest selling smart phones are here Surajeet Das Gupta in New Delhi | September 20, 2004 Rediff.com If you are planning to impress your favourite clients this festive season, here's a nifty product. BlackBerry handhelds, which combine the functions of a mobile phone and a personal digital assistant, are about to hit Indian shores. BlackBerry, made by the Canada-based Research in Motion (RIM) Inc, is one of the hottest selling handheld devices across the globe. The company has tied up with telecom major Bharti to market the products and its services in the country. Bharti will bundle the BlackBerry sets with an Airtel connection and specialised services, primarily targeted at corporate clients in the country's five major metros. It's not a phone for bargain seekers. The phone could rip a hole in your pocket as it is likely to be priced from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. However, cheaper models will also be introduced later -- a new BlackBerry 7100 phone is about to hit the globe for an attractive $200. Though a Bharti spokesperson declined to comment on the tie up, sources in the know said the company was finalising the tariff for services like instant corporate mail. BlackBerry phones are known for various innovations, including a unique "push" technology by which office e-mails can be sent automatically to the device as it arrives while on the go. There is no need to retrieve the mail. Of course, you need a BlackBerry server at your office backend. Blackberry also offers 'SureType' technology, which allows users to quickly and accurately dial or type either using single-handed operation or two-handed thumb typing, without the limitations of traditional phone keypads. There are no dual keypads, peripherals or hardware transformations required, and there is no need to learn a new way to type. To help facilitate easy spelling and composition, SureType includes intuitive software with a word list of over 30,000 words and the ability to increase that list based on the frequency of use and the names in the handset's address book. RIM Inc is a strong player in the global mobile handheld device market. BlackBerry devices have increased their market share from 2.7 per cent last year to 8.2 per cent this year, trailing only market leader Nokia, Palm and HP. As many as six million handheld smart phone devices were sold in the quarter between June-August this year. Blackberry, of course, is expected to face competition in India from Compaq's Ipaq which is also due to make an entry soon. -- Business Standard

A guy from TATA indicom BroadBand visited me the other day. And on inquiring abt speeds he said "You would get speeds upto 512 kbps" .. I hate tht word "upto"! Coz its not "atleast"! He confirmed saying that u will get it in the range of 64 to 512 kbps. So i shove him off, and kept hooked on to the CableNet I have! all these ppl have misused the BroadBand term!
-
So true!! I dont wear a watch either! Infact it also saves so much trouble to figure out what could be the exact time! But if Reliance gives the wrong time, almost a crore ppl would work on the RIM time!
-
If u r buying the connection from a customer himself, then u got to carry his burden! Meaning, keep payin his installments till tht 3 yr period. U can negotiate with the seller and get him to reduce the initial money that u pay to get his connection. Secondly if u r taking his handset and then changing the plan, then i dont think its advisable to use a old handset(with the installment burden) If u r buying a used handset from RIM then theres no question of paying installments.

Music firms pin hopes on ring tone licensing Richa Singh in Mumbai | September 17, 2004 09:39 IST Rediff.com With personalised ring tone services increasingly catching the fancy of consumers, the Rs 600 crore (Rs 6 billion) music industry is set to rake in more moolah from licensing music to mobile phone companies. Says BPL Mobile general manager - marketing, Kunal Ramteke: "Music royalty from telecom firms contributes three to five per cent to the music industry's revenues. It is expected to grow to around 30 per cent in a year." Balu Nayar, general manager, value-added services, Hutchison Max Telecom, said: "Music companies are paid royalties of around 25 per cent per usage for the songs licensed to us for no additional cost inputs. Though it may not do much for their topline growth, it is really helping the bottomlines of the loss-making music industry." In 2003 the music industry collected Rs 20-25 crore (Rs 200-250 million) from mobile-based services like ring tones, ring back tones, sing tones, true tones and music dedications such as 'send a song' service. This year it is expected to double to Rs 40-45 crore (Rs 400-450 million), Nayar adds. Shridhar Subramanium, managing director, Sony Music, said: "Revenue from the telecom segment is small at present. But it is expected to grow to 20 per cent of overall sales by 2010. Majority of the revenues will still come from sales of music in physical formats such as cassettes and CDs." Says Vipul Pradhan, chief executive officer, Phonograph Performance, the copyright and licensing division of Indian Music Industry: "The revenue pie from licensing deals has undergone a change in the last year. Mobile-based services are a new category, which contributes 40 per cent to the licensing business. The balance comes from private FM radio (30 per cent), government radio (10 per cent), and public performance (20 per cent)." Earlier FM radio was putting in 40 per cent followed by public performance at 30 per cent. The remaining share was divided among government radio, at 20 per cent and music dedication at 10 per cent. IMI represents 60 per cent of the Indian music companies. Revenues from telecom-based services look poised to give the piracy-plagued music industry a shot in the arm. However, Vijay Lazarus, president of IMI, underplays the contribution of mobile providers. It is the music industry that is contributing to the mobile services, he counters. He pegs the licensing revenues from mobile and Internet to just one per cent of the total business. "Revenue from digitised services will grow in a big way when broadband starts reaching homes. So far the pick up has been slow," he said.
