Virgin Enters The Per Second War
Himanshu Singh replied to vvinayakpai's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Virgin cant compete with others. I think one should ask for their roaming rates and would they allow sms packs with per second tariff before opting for this tariff. -

Whats the current price for Duo folks?

Friends I activated caller tunes by sending sms to 51234. The tune got activated and Rs.15 were deducted from my account. I got this sms from Reliance----Dear customer you are subscribed to callertunes ar Rs.1/2days.------ I want to know is there any scheme where the rental is only Rs.15/month?(cos at Rs1/2days it comes down to Rs.15/month). The CCE was not very helpful when I called up to confirm. The obvious way is to wait and see how they charge me over next few days but I thought some of the members may have more information on this. Another thing is this.. They charged Rs.10 for tune download. And the sms which they sent me reads like this--song has been downloaded at a charge of Rs.10. Tune renewal on 18/12/2009---- So does it mean that every month they will charge Rs.10 for renewal??

Surprisingly I have not been charged for caller tune daily rentals for past 4 days.

Bharti Airtel Cuts Mobile Roaming Charges
Himanshu Singh replied to ravi_patent's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
MTNL can never join such tariff race dear.It does not operate outside delhi and bombay.it does not have any network outside these two metros. and BSNL may be a PSU but that does not mean it can simply piggy back on BSNL's infrastructure without paying for it. You may wonder local outgoing calls are still charged at Re.1/ min on the base tariff plan of MTNL And probably now its the only service provider which does not offer per sec billing. -
Tata Docomo Launches Per Second Roaming
Himanshu Singh replied to B R SHIVANANDA's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Its good that DoCoMO has launched per sec billing for roaming as well. But contrary to their claims, they are not the pioneers in this. Reliance made it simple by launching everything per sec at one go unlike docomo which first came with per sec billing for home circle and then while in roaming. Also DoCoMo would need time to go pan India while Reliance already is. Strangely I dont find Tata cdma competing with Reliance CDMA. HAVE TATA GIVEN UP ON CDMA AFTER 10 MINS CALL OFFER? -
Vodafone, Bharti Come Under Tax Scanner In Uttar Pradesh
Himanshu Singh posted a topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
New Delhi: Telecom firms Vodafone Essar Digilink Ltd and Bharti Airtel Ltd will be examined by special auditors for wrongfully availing of Cenvat (Central value-added tax) credit and non-payment of service tax in the Uttar Pradesh (UP) circle, an official said. “This is a special audit covering all aspects of audit with a focus on wrongful availment of Cenvat credit by the two companies,” Suchitra Sharma, commissioner, Central excise and service tax, Lucknow, said. Sharma also said that while the Central excise commissioner’s office undertakes routine audits of companies, this is a special one that will be done by an outside agency. Cenvat is an input tax on the purchase of raw materials and capital goods. Service providers in India are entitled to claim a set-off of various input levies (such as excise and countervailing duty) on the purchase of capital goods and inputs used in producing output services. This set-off, claimed from the government, is commonly known as Cenvat credit. Bharti Airtel said the notice was a routine one and that it was compliant with all rules. “At Bharti Airtel, we strictly follow all statutory, regulatory and fiscal guidelines. We have received a letter from the Lucknow office of the Central excise department on the utilization of Cenvat credit in Uttar Pradesh. This is a routine inquiry and the company will comply with all requirements as per law,” said a spokesperson. Vodafone Essar Ltd, which owns Vodafone Essar Digilink, declined to comment on the issue. A Vodafone executive, who didn’t want to be identified, said the company hadn’t received any notice. “The special audit in the case of Vodafone and Bharti will essentially look into the aspect of leakage of revenue that has been found in the books of accounts of these companies,” said a professional close to the development, who did not want to be identified. “A team of cost accountants will look into the books of these companies for five years. In a similar inquiry for the Delhi circle earlier this year, a recovery of Rs125 crore was made.” Sharma said the government has already completed its own audit and had hired professionals for a closer look at the accounts. The lack of clarity in the definition of capital goods under the Cenvat credit rules has been creating confusion, especially for telecom operators, according to Siddharth Mehta, senior manager (indirect tax) at audit and consulting firm KPMG. “Although I am not aware of this particular audit, telecom service providers have been facing problems in interpreting what qualifies for Cenvat credit and what does not— both under capital goods and inputs,” he said. “For instance, while some service providers consider facilities such as towers and shelters as capital goods, the rules do not consider them as capital goods on a strict interpretation.” Mehta also said the broad objective of the credit scheme under Cenvat in principle is that credit to service providers be available for all goods used in providing taxable services. “The way out now is implementation of the goods and services tax (GST), under which the credit regime is expected to be liberal and applicable to all business activity,” he added. The Union government wants to implement a uniform GST across the country by 1 April, a step that’s being resisted by some states. The department of telecommunications (DoT) already has audits running on the two firms along with other major incumbent operators Idea Cellular Ltd and Tata Teleservices Ltd after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India suggested this be done. All the reviews pertain to fiscal 2007 and 2008. The audits were called after brokerage firms pointed to some discrepancies in revenue reported by Reliance Communications Ltd (RCom). RCom has disputed the findings of the DoT-ordered special audit. At the end of September, Bharti Airtel, India’s largest telecom firm, had 7.2 million of its 110 million total mobile subscribers from the UP (east) operating area. Vodafone Essar had 8.2 million mobile subscribers from this operating area out of its total 82.8 million subscribers. -

An internal check conducted by Department of Telecom's (DoT) monitoring cell sometime back had found that most telecom operators were overstating their subscriber base, giving credence to allegations that big players were favoured with additional spectrum for free even when they didn't deserve it.The revelations come at a time when the CBI has raided the offices of DoT to unearth nexus between its officials and telecom operators in awarding of licences. Contrary to claims made by 14 telecom operators before the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and TRAI that their net customer base added up to around 38 crore till April 2009, DoT found that their actual subscriber base was not more than 30 crore. However, leading players denied that they had misrepresented facts. Three big players, Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance, have allegedly overstated subscribers by over a crore each. The government has been awarding additional spectrum solely on subscriber base claimed by these operators. Licences to Swan Telecom and Unitech had been awarded last year for nearly Rs 1,600 crore each.A start up spectrum of 4.4MHz comes with the licence with a subscriber base of upto 5 lakh. For the allotment of next step of spectrum such as 6.2MHz or 7.2MHz, the boost in subscriber base of an operator has to be by three to five times of the start up figure. For commanding a spectrum of 14.2 MHz, an operator has to have additional 65 lakh to a crore subscribers. Variations have largely been noticed in the monthly data provided by these opearators to DoT's vigilance and monitoring cell along with other agencies such as Intelligence Bureau, DRI, ED, etc. The nearly eight crore extra connections is more than the combined user bases of 50% of telecom operators in the country including Spice Telecon, Tata Teleservices, BPL, Shyam Telecom, MTNL and HFCL Infotel. In fact, like the big boys, the smaller players too have variations in their customer base. Most operators denied the charge. A Bharti Airtel spokesperson said, "As a responsible company, Bharti Airtel complies with all the regulatory guidelines prescribed by the Indian government. The company deploys world-class systems and processes to monitor subscriber information." A Vodafone spokesperson said the company observed highest standards of reporting. spokesperson of RCOM said since there were different parameters followed by Trai and DoT, there could be a possibility of variation in numbers. He, however, said the company had sent in its response to the authorities conducting audit. A senior BSNL official said since different circles reported data separately, there could be a possibility of mismatch. SOURCE ET

Regularities In Spectrum Allocation? Cbi Searches Dot Office
Himanshu Singh posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
The CBI on Thursday searched offices of the Department of Telecom in Facts on Indians mobile connections connection with alleged irregularities in allocation of 2G Facts on Indians mobile connections spectrum to some of the new players. CBI sources said a team of its sleuths were conducting searches at the Sanchar Bhawan here after registering a case in this connection last evening. The sources said that all records pertaining to the allocation of spectrum to new players in January 2008 will be taken to see if there were irregularities in the process. None of the DoT official was available for comments. In 2008, eight new players were given licences along with bundled 4.4 MHz spectrum to start mobile services. The telecom ministry had come under attack for doling out spectrum very cheap compared to its actual market value. CVC had recommended a CBI probe into the procedures followed for selecting companies for giving 2G spectrum. Eyebrows were raised when two of the new players -- Unitech Wireless Services and Swan Telecom -- sold part of their stake at huge premium within days of getting the licences. The government had given telecom licence along with start up spectrum at Rs 1,651 crore for pan-Indian services.(ET) -
