Updated : Mtnl Launches 3g Services In Delhi !
Himanshu Singh replied to Honest's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Tariffs will not fall. I am sure they are going to go up. These are promotional tariff, which by nature are always less expensive (that is why they are promotional in the first place). MTNL has not paid any price for the 3G spectrum it got. It will have to match the price which is quoted by the successful bidders for 3G spectrum in Delhi, and then I am sure they will have to increase their tariff. MTNL must focus on 2G before it starts its 'adventure'. Even the promotional tariff are so high that its out of reach of a lot of prospective subscribers. I have this odd feeling that 3G is going to fall flat in India. -

Updated : Airtel, Rcom Most Congested Networks: Trai
Himanshu Singh replied to Honest's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Only five telecom operators out of 11 have met the 90 percent quality of service benchmark set by the sector's watchdog, a survey released on Friday said. nterestingly, the country's largest private operator Airtel is among the firms that failed to meet the benchmark of 90 percent that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has set for quality of service. "Virgin Mobile topped user satisfaction in 2008 while players like Airtel, BPL, Idea, state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) and Spice fell short of the benchmark set by telecom watchdog TRAI," said the survey conducted by CyberMedia group's flagship communications industry monthly Voice&Data in association with JuxtConsult, an online research firm. A sample of 1,318 mobile users in India was quizzed on various factors to determine overall user satisfaction. State-owned operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Vodafone jostled for the second spot with scores of 91.96 percent and 91.97 percent respectively, the survey said. The two other players to cross the TRAI benchmark of 90 percent are Reliance Communications and Tata Indicom. Last year's top scorer Aircel slipped from 92.23 percent to 85.44 percent, according to the results released in Voice&Data's January issue. "A side-effect of the scorching pace of growth of the mobile phones in India is the rapid drop in quality of service. Five major players - Airtel, BPL, Idea, MTNL and Spice - have yet to touch their previous best score achieved in 2005. This is a cause for major concern," CyberMedia's chief editor Prasanto K. Roy said. The survey conducted during October-November 2008, recorded user satisfaction on five broad parameters - pre-sales and sales, network availability, value-added service (VAS), customer care, and billing. Expectedly, all service providers exceeded the 90 percent user satisfaction benchmark on the pre-sales and sales parameter with Virgin Mobile topping the list followed by MTNL. Users participating in the survey found BPL and MTNL's network performance most satisfactory with high scores of 98.2 percent and 97 percent respectively with Airtel and Idea just making the cut above the 90 percent mark. On the VAS parameter, BSNL topped the charts with only Idea and Aircel performing below the TRAI benchmark, the survey said. However, in the customer care parameter, none of the 11 players, including the topper Virgin Mobile, could muster enough support from users to get past the 90 percent benchmark. In terms of billing integrity, the four toppers were Virgin, Vodafone, BSNL and Reliance, the survey said. The average waiting time to speak to a customer care representative of Airtel and BSNL was 4.8 minutes. Idea and Spice customer have to wait an average of five minutes with a Vodafone customer having to wait for 5.2 minutes. However, mobile services in metro circles improved in 2008 with all the operators, except Aircel, showing higher customer satisfaction and crossing the benchmark set by TRAI, the survey said. -

Ending the long wait over next generation telecom services, MTNL on Friday said it will commercially launch its 3G services in the national capital within 10 days. "We will launch 3G operations in Delhi in next 10 days," MTNL CMD R S P Sinha told reporters here. In Mumbai the 3G services would be launched in the first week of February, he added. However, as of now the company has not entered into any tie-up with content providers. Currently, our IPTV providers would give us content, going forward we may tie up with other firms. At present, it has 15,000 IPTV subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai. ET -

Why Should I Stick To Reliance/cdma?
Himanshu Singh replied to vkat's topic in Reliance Communications
There will always be nay sayers. But i am more than sure downside can no longer be unlimited or even limited for reliance. because reliance is starting with almost nil subscriber base in this platform, it will be able to poach many subscribers from the already congested networks of remaining operators and mind you in a place like delhi, from where i am ,people are just waiting for respite from call drops network congestion across all operators. reliance sure does know how to run business. it stands second in terms of over all subscriber base despite having cdma handicap if you may wish. imagine the possibilities it has with additional gsm spectrum. -
idea is offering life time validity for Rs.99 only but this is not applicable for gang customers. besides it is also offering call reducing stv with three, six and nine months validity.

I think fooling Reliance is going to take more than getting 4,5 only God knows how many more SIM cards.. Its one company which can bear even this kind of freebies..It does not matter to them if one person uses 2 SIM or 2 persons use them.. what does matter is that they are able to create the demand for their services even if its because of freebies.. I am sure 1 year from now they would be a force to reckon with.. I suspect Airtel will be cooling its heels at a distant number 2 position.. Remember its Anil's baby and not his adopted child(Like CDMA).. So he will go that extra mile to be number 1 now because he has to prove himself afresh now in a new venture.. RGSM is not something which was bequeathed to him. -

Fewer operators would also mean that there is consolidation rather than competition. Especially considering the fact that both TATA and RELIANCE are companies that have invested heavily in the CDMA business and are now made to invest in the GSM segment due to a shift in the market conditions. It cannot be ruled out that the tariffs might not be at the lowest and it may lead to consolidation rather than competition among the two operators. Too much competition is not very good.
