cdma spectrum usage is 5-6 times more efficient than gsm.. That is a technological advantage for them and that doesn't mean that they should be allocated less spectrum. Also, if the 1900 band is with the defence and it stops gsm from rolling out 3g services till dec 2006, why should the cdma operators ( acc to the coai demands, though not met as of now) also be made to wait till that time, when they have been allocated spectrum for 3g in some other band.. COAI members should have thought of all this before opting for gsm.. Also, asking trai to make 1900 gsm exclusive is asking for too much. First they get the 900 band, then 1800 now they want the 1900 band which is ok as long as they share it with the cdma operators.. After all cdma operators need that band even for basic 2g services..

im using the sony dvd writer 710a.. all over its good, infact ive just begun using the dvd burning function full fledgedly.. the good part about the sony burner is that they bundle nero and you get frequent firmware upgrades. Lite-on otherwise is the same as sony from inside, dont know about the bundled software etc.. if ur budget is high, u could even look at plextor. Pioneer should be good also. LG supports dvd-ram writing functionality. BTW, does anyone know where to get DL discs at low costs? I cudnt find anyone selling them under 500-550.

TRAI spectrum policy "unbiased": Baijal TRAI has released its recomendations on the spectrum policy. Chairman Pradip Baijal says, it is an unbiased recommendation that should take care of both CDMA and GSA subscribers. 2005-05-13 17:01 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI, has released its recomendations on the spectrum policy. It has said that the 1900 mega hetrz band is not for release, but has recomended a 2 giga hertz spectrum for both CDMA and GSA. TRAI Chairman Pradip Baijal said, enough spectrum is still not available. The organisations' recomendation should take care of both CDMA and GSA subscribers, in the current limited conditions, he said. He stressed that this was an unbaised set of recommendations. Excerpts from an interview given to CNBC-TV18. The spectrum policy is perhaps leaning towards Reliance and against city players like Tata Tele Services, Bharti, Hutch and Idea. How would you react to that? Basically the CDMA operators wanted 1900 MW. We did not allot that to them. I do not see how there can be a protest that the policy is leaning towards CDMA operators. It is a very irresponsible comment, if any one has made it. Are there no changes expected? No. We have recommended how the spectrum should be allotted. There is some spectrum available to both GSM and CDMA. We have also said that some of the spectrum should be vacated. But it is our perception that even then, enough spectrum would not be available for meeting our demand of increasing subscriber coverage from the present 50 million to the proposed 200 million in 2007. Why was the 1900 MW not allotted to CDMA? Because it is not available. The present user has said, that they can not make it available. All policies are not written in isolation. All policies have to be written on what the legacy is. You have also pointed out that 2X15 Mz 900 and 1800 band will be opened up when defence vacates them. Who does this open up to and when? The existing band of 900 and 1800 is with GSM operators, so when the mode is available, more will be allotted. How much is available currently after this recommendation? The recommendation does not make the spectrum available. The spectrum is only made available by existing users. There is a limited amount of spectrum available at present, both in GSM and CDMA. But the main problem is, in all other countries in the world, the average allocation of 2 X 14 Mz is made for CDMA operators, and in India the allocation is 2 X 2.5 to 2 x 5. If you come to GSM, all over the world, it's 2 x 20 Mz that is made available to operators. In India, it is 2 x 5 , 2 x 10. For proper network planning, we must make more spectrum available, but that spectrum is not there. So therefore we have said that whatever is the spectrum at present, that should be allotted to the players as per the allocation guidelines, and then we will look for more spectrum in other spaces. On his reaction to the Secular Operators Association internal communique. This statement that you were reading is two days old and I would not like to comment on this statement because this has no relevance with our recommendation. Our recommendation thus takes care of the problems of both the CDMA and GSM operators. You think that the recommendations are not biased towards a particular set of players? Absolutely, and that is our job. If the recommendation is biased the people will go to court, people will go everywhere. You can not get away with buyers' recommendations.

Allocation in the 450mhz band is bound to make the choice of handsets limited and costlier. COAI is certainly making sure that reliance doesn't get away with everything. How do both CDMA and GSM exist in the 1900 band is COAI says it causes inteference on GSM networks? Another problem is, the defence hasn't yet vacated the 1900mhz band.

Reliance announces Mobile Phase II Plan Tuesday, 16 November , 2004, 19:10 Kochi: Reliance Infocomm today announced the rollout of Reliance India Mobile Phase-II Plan worth Rs 250 crore in Kerala, expanding the network to 236 new towns. Speaking on the occasion, RIM Business Head for Kerala and Tamil Nadu Somasekhar Ganapathy said the network would then cover 337 towns in total and the expansion would be completed in 120 days. Ganapathy said the subscriber-base was growing steadily and crossed 4.8 lakh mark in Kerala. The coverage would be ensured at the pilgrim centre of Sabarimala this season itself, he added. Countering the reports that people were increasingly dumping RIM connections after its initial boom, the official in charge of the State Mahesh Thampi said the drop-out rate was `negligible.'

The policy that will determine the future of mobile services in India is set to be released on friday. It seems that the conrovertial 1900mhz band moght not be open for 3g services after all. TRAI is planning to open the IMT2000 band for 3g and cdma will be given the 450mhz band for their services(which they are protesting against). Also note, an extra carrier will enable them to provide ev-do which seems to be the only hurdle at the moment. Here is an article on the 450mhz band:

sometimes the red light starts blinking. Whats that for? It stops blinking when i reposition the phone on the dock.

by 144kbps i meant that reliance currently supports max 144kbps, don't know whether that data card supprts 115 or 144.. and i dont mean to say that eveyone needs those speeds that evdo provides, all im saying is that you limit your options.. in future , if one needs higher speeds, then those with the current aircards will need new ones.
-
I don't doubt the perfotmance of the device. But spending 14k for a card that supports max 144kbps knowing that ev-do is not far... I guess each to his own.
-
rd7230 i think???
-
I don't want to disappoint you, but once Reliance launches ev-do, your card won't be able to take advantage of it. This is where I feel Reliance goes wrong. When they themselves claim that they need only a month to launch ev-do after the spectrum policy is announced, why sell these cards? People like you who have spent 14k for the card will feel really dissapointed as ev-do promises average speeds of 500-600kbps (peak 2.4mbps) and you will be stuck with the same speed you get now. Also note that the spectrum policy will be announced anytime now. I know for a fact that they will launch the ev-do pcmcia cards once ev-do is launched as I have seen them. I guess they want to clear their stock. Thats why they've suddenly begun promoting the cards. This is the one that I saw:

incase you haven't heard, the reduction has been scrapped for the time being due to inteference by tdsat a few days back.. TDSAT quashes TRAI's order on bandwidth price New Delhi, April 28: In a setback to TRAI, the Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) today set aside the order on price reduction of international bandwidth which was challenged by VSNL. TRAI had lowered international bandwidth prices by up to 70 per cent projecting that the move would help tariff reduction of internet and broadband services besides boosting their penetration. Setting aside TRAI's order, TDSAT asked the regulator to have a re-look at the entire exercise and share the full facts and basis of calculation with VSNL in a transparent manner. VSNL, a major bandwidth provider, had challenged the order saying international bandwidth prices cannot be looked at in isolation and questioned TRAI's methodology on arriving at the price ceilings. According to VSNL, the price ceiling set by TRAI was below the basic cost of the company. When contacted, D P S Seth, member, TRAI, told newsmen, "We shall study the order once we receive it and take appropriate action." Meanwhile, the international bandwidth price order, which came into effect from April 1, 2005, has been scrapped retrospectively. (Agencies)

once evdo is launched (roughly a month after the spectrum policy is announced), we can expect avg speeds of 500-600kbps. Relaince is bound to launch an evdo pcmcia card then. They were using evdo aircards at supercomm. So it might be better to wait for sometime.
