  1. Yahoo Messenger @ R-World

ok in kerala there are airtel, bpl, escortel, bsnl and relianceexcept for bsnl and reliance all the others are supported by rediff in yahoo airtel and escortel are supported by yahoo. i think someone said bpl is also supporting yahoo. but they r not mentioned on the site ok even if dapo users are minimum they would be using the facility most. thats why they wont want to give it free. and ad revenue is not much of a revenue these days. these days every internet co. tries to get revenue from the service itself. btw hits from mobile wont count with advts. coz they r not getting much advts that way i have tried to clear what i have said earlier. i hope this clears the doubt.
  2. Prepaid pick-up.

i didnt hear anything like that. on the contrary everyone was eagerly waiting for the launch of the prepaid service. in fact i think most ppl were expecting much more from reliance prepaid.
  3. Effective R-Connect Speeds

well it would show like that coz the speed would increase a bit when ur downloading the same file again. must be due to server caching. but the best way to determine the speed is to run the test at various time of the day. also check this site. http://www.pcpitstop.com you can check your connection speed, do anti virus scan and test ur computer and so on. btw i used it to check the speed of connection when i was testing at RWW. i got just 5 kbps. i dont know how it would perform now.
  4. Yahoo Messenger @ R-World

i dont think just because tata is there reliance cannot be there. if that was the case then only 1 gsm mobile service provider would have been there. i think the only prob is that because of dapo users they r not able to reach a revenue sharing agreement. because dapo users have sms free. also the sms charge will be double when using such a service. as soon as they have worked out an agreement it will be available for us too.
  5. The battle lines are drawn

source link The battle lines are drawn Telecom and broadcasting companies are banding together to offer broadband services. But cable operators and ISPs are forming alliances too, reports Surajeet Das Gupta Published : February 25, 2004 India’s cable operators are in for a huge fight. Telecom companies plan on leaping into their turf by distributing television programmes to homes through telecom broadband networks. The bad news for cable operators is that the telecom companies are poised to strike an alliance with – surprise, surprise – broadcasting companies. They’ll still use cable operators, but will also join hands with the telecom companies to offer broadband services – something that’s a long-term threat to cable operators. But cable operators are not exactly sitting idle either – they’re in the process of tying up with internet service providers (ISPs). On the anvil are joint ventures with ISPs. Indeed, the battle lines are being drawn in what will be a fiercely fought war. On the one side will be telecom companies like Reliance Infocomm and Tata Telservices. On the other will be the cable operators. Both are furiously seeking allies. The jack in the box here is the coming regulation by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) of convergence of carriage, which is throwing up new possibilities. Star TV is already in dialogue with Reliance on coming aboard its proposed broadband offering: connectivity through the ethernet to homes. Star TV CEO Peter Mukherjea will not divulge details but he points out : “I think convergence will ensure that customers will get a better quality product, ensure transparency and eventually reduce tariffs.” A Reliance Infocomm spoksman declined to comment on all this. But Sony TV head Kunal Das Gupta says: “What the government through the TRAI is trying to do is to ensure more competiton in the last mile. That is good for everyone, especially customers.” But cable operators have an ally – ISP companies that offer high speed internet access to homes. Leading ISP companies are already looking at alliances and joint ventures with multi system operators (MSOs). That’s because ISP companies need to acquire customers quickly to offer always-on internet access. And cable operators, with their ability to tap into over 40 million homes, can offer them just that. The telecom companies can offer comprehensive broadband services (TV programmes, the internet and voice). So cable operators and MSOs will have to offer customers value added services, primarily broadband. But to do so and ensure quality (telecom companies are using the latest fibre and cable which promise high speeds and better picture quality), they have to upgrade the quality of their cable (from a coaxial cable to a CAT 5 cable). That’s why ISPs and cable operators are closing ranks. Says B Ramraj, managing director of Sify Ltd, the ISP company: “We are in dialogue with cable operators to form alliances to offer internet and TV channels together by upgrading the cable. That is the future.” The company has already tied up with some cable operators to offer internet services, with both sides sharing the revenue (at the moment Sify offers broadband through wireless and the last mile is connected through an ethernet by a CAT 5 cable which is laid alongside the cable operator’s coaxil cable). Why do the broadcasting companies want to partner the telecom companies? Executives at most broadcasting companies privately say that cable operators are under declaring the number of subscriber homes. So broadcasters are losing revenue and don’t have a clear understanding of who their customer is. That problem will get resolved if they tie up with telecom companies. “Out of 40 million cable homes, we get paid for only 5 to 10 million homes. So if a telecom company comes offering me complete transparency and has 15 million customers, I would offer it content at a lower rate because my recovery is 100 per cent,” says a top executive at a broadcasting company. But won’t the conditional access system (CAS) ensure that the number of subscribers can’t be under-declared? Not so, say many broadcasters. That’s because subscribers will not invest in a set top box if they are getting nothing extra in return. Says a senior broadcasting company executive: “They were already getting all the pay channels in any case. So why should they invest in CAS and pay more?” The only reason, he says, they will do so is if they’re offered new value added services (internet, video on demand, better quality pictures, video streaming, interactive TV, better customer services, among others). But to offer these services cable operators have to invest substantially, which they are not willing to do. Still, private telecom companies and broadcasting companies face one hitch in their effort to sideline the cable operator. They don’t have last mile access to over 40 milion homes – the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) do, thanks to their copper wire connections. And they can’t access BSNL’s and MTNL’s connections, though they’d like TRAI to ensure that they can. Says an ISP company executive: “There are only two alternatives – either the incumbent pushes broadband on its own or lets others have equal access to its infrastructure.” But why should BSNL or MTNL allow others to use its lines? Asks a senior executive at a state-owned company: “Why should I allow you access to my infrastructure in which I have invested money? Do you allow competitors to use your infrastructure?” Good point. For all the looming threat that the telecom companies pose, ISP companies are not having sleepless nights. They think that Indian customers still prefer separate service providers for voice, telephony and data. Secondly, the interests of cable operators and the ISPs are clearly merging. “Earlier we paid the cable operator a part of the revenue to ensure that he did not cut the CAT 5 cable line which we laid to the customer’s premise. But now they see broadband services as an integral part of their business model.” Cable operators, meanwhile, tend to downplay the broadband threat. “Cable has grown and will flourish like everywhere in the world. And broadband is still a new technology that’s in the experimental stage when it comes to offering TV programmes,” says the CEO of one of the country’s leading cable operators. But cable operators also sound a warning note: they will fight the telecom companies fiercely, if push comes to shove. Clearly, the mother of all battles lies on the horizon.
  6. Data cable and software

hi anoop what price did the rww guys say for nokia r-connect cable? try searching in bazee. you will find cables a lot cheaper. i am not sure if this topic should be in this forum, but if some other moderators find its not supposed to be in this forum then they will move it. there are 2 discussions which i found going on in the forum under r-connect. http://www.rimweb.com/forums/index.php?showforum=4 check the above link and i think that should explain your other doubts.
  7. Reliance to move beyond voice

i am not quite sure bout POS, but from what i know its a point of sale terminal. just like the ones they have for petrol cards. its used for entering information and regestering etc. most often it would be connected to the server through phone lines or some thing else. but i believe reliance is making it all wireless. thus it would be less prone to many problems, while giving round the clock service. it would essentially mean you might see sales ppl with POS terminals instead of registers, it would also mean that they can sell at any place, instead of waiting till getting to the office to update the records. the customers wont have to visit the showroom.
  8. Which mail u prefer?

rediff and yahoo comes under 2 catagories. if ur using free service then it woud be free webmail, if u have paid for it then its paid pop3. IMAP stands for internet mail access protocol. hotmail uses IMAP, there are some other sites which use IMAP, i think Netscape is one.
  9. Access Web Mail

no u cant check hotmail, you can check yahoo if u have pop3 access. but u have to pay for that.. and i doubt if anyone has paid for it... so u cant check those emails
  10. here is something i found on the web. now u have to file tax returns even if u r a college student, a vegitable vendor, or even if u r a begger, coz reliance is supposed to be used by even beggers. or so the sms goes. here is the link from where i got the news http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/519957.cms If there's a WLL, there's a taxman round the bend ARNAV PANDYA / ETIG TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2004 12:03:54 AM ] A large number of people, whose paths have never crossed with that of the income-tax sleuths until now, might suddenly find themselves in the tax net. The reason, the move to a unified licensing regime could bring many WLL subscribers under the ‘one by six’ scheme, which requires filing of returns. The introduction of unified licensing means that the subscribers to ‘limited mobility’ services — being offered by the likes of Reliance Infocomm and Tata Teleservices — would become full-fledged mobile subscribers, which would bring them under the purview of the ‘one by six’ scheme. Till now limited mobility services are legally equivalent to basic services, which is not covered under the ‘one by six’ scheme. The income tax department’s ‘one by six’ scheme requires any individual falling into any of the six specified categories to file a tax return, even if the tax to be paid is nil. These categories included owning a car, a club membership or making a foreign trip, as well as owning a mobile phone. The telephone has had connections with the taxman for quite some time. Earlier, a person who was having a landline connection in his name was also liable to file tax returns. This led to hardships for many who had a landline phone in the house in the name of a family member who scarcely had any taxable income. This was especially true for senior citizens and retired people, who suddenly had a lot of paperwork thrust on them. This led to many people surrendering their landlines just to escape the tax net. Subsequently the condition was withdrawn and clauses were changed, stipulating owners of mobile phones to file returns. Though, this meant even a college student with a mobile having to file a tax return. However, there was some relief in the fact that those with a WLL connection would not be falling under this head, and hence would not be required to file a return in the process. But, with leading telecom service providers like Reliance Infocomm and Tata Teleservices embracing the unified licensing regime, telecom analysts say that the WLL service, that they were offering, has now actually become a mobile service. A Reliance Infocomm spokesperson said it was a ‘unified access service provider’, and license conditions stipulate that those who do not want to be part of the unified licensing scheme can continue on WLL (i.e. without availing the roaming facility). However, tax experts say that mere possession of a mobile phone makes it compulsory to file a tax return. Lack of roaming does not provide an exemption. What exactly the service is called might be a technical point open for debate, but for the end user it can mean a difference between falling inside or outside the tax net. The differentiation is important as millions of customers could be impacted. For example, Reliance, at the end of January ’04, had 6.4m subscribers, with 5.7m being CDMA users. Several chartered accountants and tax experts say that prima facie the conversion will bring the erstwhile ‘limited mobility’ customer under the ‘one by six’ scheme. Significantly, this would affect many low-income individuals who went for the WLL mobile as the entry levels were low. These include the likes of vegetable vendors who have so far not been part of the mobile revolution.

here is some more info from http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/453106.cms if reliance isnt the market leader now, then it will be by the end of this month the article is a bit old, but still it should be useful. such informaton are given out after careful market research and all such stuff. and im guessing it is a conservative estimate Reliance Info to have 8 mn subscribers by Mar: Ambani PTI[ THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2004 05:32:10 PM ] MUMBAI: Reliance Infocomm will notch up a subscriber base of around seven to eight million by end of the current financial year, banking on its launch of CDMA pre-paid services, even as the telecom entity is expected to record net profit by March 31, 2004. "We are planning to launch our CDMA pre-paid cards soon and this will ramp up our subscriber base to around seven to eight million," Reliance Industries Vice Chairman and Managing Director Anil Ambani told reporters on Thursday. The company has been field-testing pre-paid cards for the last couple of months and was slated to launch the services by mid-January or early February. Reliance Infocomm is also planning to launch its broadband-based services in the country shortly, he said adding launching fixed services, apart from a host of new services, were also on the agenda. However, he did not disclose the date for launching of the pre-paid services. Ambani also said the company, which has already posted a cash break-even, is being projected to record a net profit by March 31, 2004 . He said there was no impact on the licence fees and the telecom business, like other businesses of the company, was "doing well".

this is what i found from business standard website check out the date. ur date is 7th feb here it is 18th feb. and the addition between that period(7th is the date of launch of rim prepaid) 1 lakh. so adding that to ur figure of 5.75 million makes it 5.86 million, and today its 1st so im sure reliance has gone past the mark of bharti. if there is any other opinion then let it be known and lets have an active discussion. RIM adds 1 lakh subscribers Our Corporate Bureau in Mumbai Published : February 18, 2004 Reliance Infocomm has cornered over one lakh subscriber in the pre-paid segment within a few days of the launch. The company entered the pre-paid market on February 9 with a range of handsets bundled with rechargable vouchers in various denominations. Speaking on the sidelines of the roadshows for IPCL IPO, Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries (RIL) said, “we have in excess of one lakh prepaid customers so far. We have far exceeded our expectations. We haven’t even launched ads in television.” Ambani pointed out that “We have been consistent in our figures of getting subscriber and we have a market share between 20-30 per cent.” He was of the opinion that the market is big enough to have at least 4-5 operators and “every operator can have a market share in the range between 20-25 per cent”. On the overall telecom market, Ambani said that India would see additions of at least 2-3 million a month . However, on the subscriber base in Reliance Infocomm he reiterated that they continue to hold a market share of 20-30 per cent. Reliance Infocomm entered the pre-paid segment where its customer get a free connection and recharge vouchers worth Rs 3240 valid for six months with an additional six month grace period. During this grace period the subscriber will be able to receive incoming calls and SMS without recharging the account.
  14. Reliance launches wearable phone

here is some more info bout the phone, i mean details of its use. and here is the link from where i got it http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/527593.cms Now, watch, click and speak KALPANA SHAH TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, MARCH 01, 2004 01:28:21 AM ] BANGALORE: This is the era of the Indian James Bond. A first-of-its-kind triple combo of wristwatch, camera and cellphone has been quietly launched in India first. The device will hit the US and Korean markets only in late March. Called Telson TWC 1150, this designer phone has been brought to India by Reliance Infocomm . It is being exclusively marketed in select Webworld stores and only in select cities. SP Shukla, head of wireless products and services, Reliance Infocomm, told The Economic Times that it was a lifestyle product that was meant to be exclusive and available only to discerning buyers who may want to make a statement by the very fact of ownership. Priced at Rs 23,900, this 98 gm device also packs in lots of features including a speakerphone, voice recording and voice recognition capabilities. No, you don’t need to take the watch off your wrist every time the phone rings. You have three options to listen in: one, use the instrument like a speakerphone as long as your wrist is at chest-level. Two, use an earpiece which is infrared-enabled and thus wireless. Three, wear an aesthetic metal ring on your finger (it comes complementary!) plug a thin wire to your wristwatch, bring your finger close to the ear to listen to the caller. Meanwhile, you can also use the plug-in high-resolution camera that is included in the handset kit. The high resolution display screen – 128 x 112 pixels – can even be used to display the photo of the caller once you’ve downloaded the picture. Name display is what those other, cheaper phones do! The gadget supports voice dial, voice memo, call recording and answering machine functionalities. According to Shukla, Reliance Infocomm expects to sell the device in thousands, not in lakhs. “Since India is now a big market for CDMA products, any new product that’s made for this technology cannot stay away from India. We also believe that the Indian market is ready to experiment and therefore we will introduce more interesting gadgets in the future,” he said. The three-in-one device runs on one battery and gives talktime in line with high-end handsets.
  15. Which mail u prefer?

hi guys, i have edited the poll. coz i thought that there are many ppl who dont use any email client. most usually use yahoo or hotmail or rediffmail free version. anyway i think that some of the free pop3 mail clients are quite good. unless ofcourse u want to have the name of a brand as someone had earlier pointed out. but for normal web surfing needs its quite useful to have a stable and reliable free pop3 mail. so i use gawab for most of my email needs, like newsletter, applying for membership etc etc. for personal correspondence i give out my rediff or yahoo mail id. the benifit is i can use my yahoo rediff and hotmail without getting any spam at all. and i only get spammed on my pop3 mail. i use one pop3 account for more regular use. for those websites which im sure would not spam, thus i am able to save all the emails which sometimes turn out to be very useful. for other sites i give out one of my other email accounts that too at gawab. if i get too much spam, i just open another account.... why pay money when u can have it for free and even those paid service wont give u any guarantee or any data protection. if u lose any mail its still the same as free service. maybe u get extra storage, but whats that good for when ur downloading all the mails. the only benifit is u can get bigger attachments and send bigger attachments... r u sending mp3s??? oh i forgot to add something when i want to send some big files or recieve big files only then do i use my isp's email. it is fast too that way.....
  16. BIRTHDAY WISHES!

happy birthday vikas, i wish you all success in hacking the reliance phone...
  17. Rconnect SMTP, POP?

i dont think it would be that great to have such an email with @yahoo.com or @rediffmail.com, it would actually reduce the value. if you want to increase the value then you should think bout getting a domain name, that really gives value. and in the mean time check out mail.com, they have tons of domain names like teacher.com etc etc. you could get something which u can relate to yourself. but their web interface isnt something i like and they dont give pop3 and smtp. btw if arun is interested gawab.com gives free webbased email for domain names, with smtp and pop3. 4 mb space. and its free. if arun is interested then every member can get 4mb mail box @rimweb.com and they take care of the space and all works... think bout it.
  18. Rconnect SMTP, POP?

not necessarly there are many isps which provide pop3 and smtp servers. if you have any other isp account you can use that smtp address or else you can search for free email providers who provide pop3 and smtp. some will require that you use the smtp only with their email address, but if search hard enough then you will be able to find some which do not make such requests. freemailguide search for email service providers at this site. check the pop3 email providers and free email servers. or else try using imap
  19. greatest hoax! not really

hi chor, i congratulate you on your active imagination. but i think you posted in the wrong section. so your posts are being moved to the appropriate sections
  20. Drastic Upgradations Necessary !

    what do u mean?
  21. Drastic Upgradations Necessary !

u can try adding the commonly used words to the dictionary of t9. i dont know how much u can add... and it seems those get erased when u flash the phone or upgrade it
  22. Handset Purchase Monopoly !

the fact remains that reliance wont allow us to buy cdma phones from anyone else. we have to use the phone they supply. i confirmed it. reliance uses cdma 1x, and any phone which is combatable with it should work on reliance. and they dont have the right to change the technology to suit their needs. correct me if i am wrong, i only have that info 2nd hand. i agree they gave phones like that. on full payment. but they actually made a bundle on that, check other posts for verification. they r allowing us to upgrade to camera phones because from the LG point of view it is good. coz they are able to sell higher models. but if u try to exchange ur samsung phone for LG then they wont allow it. coz then LG would be losing it. what im trying to say is that reliance is not protecting the right of the consumers. they r protecting the profit of their suppliers. combatable phones will be available only when reliance allows such phones to be used on their network. consider that a statement rather than a question also they r not giving the handset free. u have to pay Rs.100 as financing charges. and if u drop the connection then u have to pay a fine. i am very much attracted by reliance, and i admire the co. but sometimes i find it necessary to speak up against their policies. if u read all my posts then u would see i have been favouring reliance. it is just that im not blinded by admiration for them, but i think there are things which require more than a casual glance.
  23. Drastic Upgradations Necessary !

what bout othere users those who have find each and every letter?
  24. Help on VoiceMail

i cant say anything authoritatively, coz i havent used airtel much. and im a DAPO user. but i havent had much complaint with my handset. though i too have missed a few calls even when i was in range. what is ur roaming charge. did you ask bout that? i am sure you will get great benifit from that. you should call up the customer help line and they will help you in activating the voice mail facility. i havent used the voice mail yet and i dont know if there is any difference between post paid and prepaid
  25. Access Web Mail

which mail r u trying to access? i think u have to give the correct pop3 address. and even then some of them might not work. i dont know why... maybe niket or vikas would know
