  4. Handset Launches - News Snippets

HTC Salsa - the Facebook phone - now available online in India at Rs. 20,399 Looks like HTC is continuing its trend of releasing phones in India soon after their global launches, with the HTC Salsa, one of the two famous Facebook phones from the company, now officially available for pre-order on the online retail site - Letsbuy.com. Customers can expect delivery in 4-7 working days, at the time of writing. Once called the Facebook phone, along with the yet missing QWERTY HTC ChaCha, the HTC Salsa offers one-touch options throughout the interface to post/update/check information on Facebook, all to allow for ‘instant sharing’ as HTC calls it. All this with the Facebook button, visible below the screen, in the image below... Priced a little too high at Rs. 20,399 (bundled with a 2GB microSD card), the HTC Salsa has a 800MHz processor (not the 600MHz config we were expecting), 512 MB of RAM, and should come with at least Android 2.3 Gingerbread onboard – when we’d last officially heard of the device, it was supposed to come with Android 2.4, or another name for the almost mythical and still unseen Android Ice Cream OS. Of course, HTC Sense UI is skinned over the OS. The Salsa has a 3.4-inch capacitive touch screen with 480 x 320 resolution, as well as a 5MP camera with auto-focus and flash. Prices will hopefully fall to Samsung Ace levels soon after the phone hits retail shelves. Other specs of the phone include a weight of 120 grams; 3G (HSDPA 7.2Mbps, HSUPA 384Kbps)/GPS (with A-GPS)/Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n)/GPRS (with EDGE)/Bluetooth (v3.0) connectivity; 512MB of storage expandable to 32GB via microSD card; a 1520 mAh battery rated to deliver up to 585 minutes of talktime, and 456 hours of standby time; a VGA front camera; g-sensor, digital compass, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor.
  5. iPad Alternatives

HTC Flyer Android 2.4 tablet now available online in India, for Rs. 37,499 The 32GB Wi-Fi+3G version of the 7-inch HTC Flyer is available on the online store, for Rs. 37,499. Other specs include a 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB microSD storage expansion, GPS, 5MP rear camera (capable of 720p HD recording), 1.3MP front-facing camera, and a 4000 mAH battery rated to deliver up to 1000 hours of standby time and 4 hours of video playback time. MSI to launch four new tablets in India by July The Android Gingerbread WindPad 100A, along with the Windows-based WindPad 110W, and the low-cost also Gingerbread-based Enjoy 10 and 7 tablets will be making their way into India by July. The WindPad 100A we saw was a slim device with a brushed metal back panel, bearing an impressive 1280x800 IPS but smudge-loving display onboard, and a wide range of ports, from USB to HDMI and 3.5mm audio. It also bears a 5MP rear camera, and a 2MP front camera, and is powered by the Honeycomb-loving Tegra 2 processor and a whole gigabyte of DDR2 RAM. 16/32GB options will apparently be available, while microSD expansion up to 32GB is also part of the deal. Both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+3G options will also be available. The WindPad 110W sports similar specifications, bearing Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz processor instead (1-core 2 threads), 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 32GB SSD, and a 4200 mAH battery. Both WindPad 100A and 110W will come with integrated stereo speakers and SRS PC Sound wrap around sound, while the 110W has a range of bundled apps onboard, such as the Smart Tracker control system, MSI Easy Face biometric software, MSI EasyViewer photo manager, and and Office Starter 2010. Expect them to be priced around the Rs. 30K range. The WindPad Enjoy 10 and Enjoy 7 however are low cost devices, expected to cost around Rs. 15K and Rs. 10K respectively, if their announced USD MSRPs of $299 and $199 are anything to go by. The Gingerbread tablets will offer lower-end specifications compared to their full-fledged brethren. The Enjoy 10 will have a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor powering it, a 10-inch 1024 x 768 screen, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, a 27.3WHr battery, and two (front and rear) 2MP cameras, supposedly capable of 720p HD recording. It is supposedly able to playback 1080p video. The Enjoy 7, has a 7-inch 800 x 480 pixels screen, and a 17.3WHr battery, and the rest of the specs remain the same. RIM starts accepting pre-orders for PlayBook in India Research In Motion's iPad-rival, the PlayBook is set to hit the Indian market as the BlackBerry makers start accepting pre-orders for the device. If reports are to be believed, PlayBook will be launched later this month at a price tag of nearly Rs. 32,000. The pricing apparently puts the device in direct competition with Apple's iPad 2 which is available in India at price beginning at Rs. 29,500.
  6. I too have ordered it but now thinking waste if it is such low quality. Do you think the Tradus Philips charger is better? I still have the INR 100 discount coupon so that comes to INR 105 net price.
  7. Android Reboot Problems And Proxy

OK ignore that link, it was just to show that the Indonesians, who btw call i5510 Gazzy, are able to reboot to recovery using - T+power, ADB (same as terminal emulator method) and a widget called switch pro. Titanium pro is paid but the apk is available in the forum softwares thread. You can upgrade to that. There is also another software called my backup pro, apk is in forum, which is a bit easier. I would suggest you can buy it for $4.99 as it also offers option to backup online.
  8. Samsung Plans To Buy Nokia

Whoa where did this come from? There is no convergence - Nokia uses Symbian and WP, Samsung uses Bada and Android. Manufacturing will be cheaper at Samsung already, unless Nokia has some high value innovations I doubt this will add value to Samsung. Plus it is tricky to place these two competing brands so that Nokia does not eat into Samsung's share and vice versa. Samsung might want to capitalize on Nokia's brand image especially in India by targeting Nokia towards price conscious market, and taking the high end market for itself. Similar to what HP did to Compaq. But then it will effectively devalue Nokia's brand image which is the only asset it has left.
  9. Android Reboot Problems And Proxy

Dr ji there is no direct clockwork recovery for i5510. I have searched but none. It needs to be ported http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/10/porting-clockwork-recovery-to-new.html and added to ROM manager. I have no idea of android build so this is tough. When in ROM manager you are going to recovery it is probably taking you to the stock recovery hence no option to nandroid. Gurus please correct me if wrong. By the way I have searched and T + power should work. http://www.kaskus.us/showpost.php?p=378241011&postcount=1035 (translate please) No need to unroot. If you do not plan to change ROM (there is no custom ROM for i5510 anyway I think) then not having nandroid is not a big deal. Please use titanium backup pro and keep a backup of all your apps and system data.

  12. Softwares For iPhone

Thanks for this thread Tarun, with more iphone users here this was required. On jailbreak, Apple says that it severely degrades the iphone user experience. http://www.cultofmac.com/apples-official-response-to-dmca-jailbreak-exemption-it-voids-your-warranty/52463 Is that true or just corporate BS? Because on Android, rooting enhances the experience with custom ROMs etc. Vinay ji or iphone users please comment.
  13. Sprint Samsung Epic 4G - The Beast Is Here!

Thanks for the comment Tarun, yes these are basic because they have been done manually with pngs. The better way to do it is creating animation on Flash and then exporting to pngs, but I do not know Flash. Would be willing to try if someone can give me Flash software and serial. For non reliance logo animations, go to XDA e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033274. Ankur, thanks will check if it can be made into bootanimation.zip.
  14. Sprint Samsung Epic 4G - The Beast Is Here!

Quite good Ankur, can you please export the .gif in Flash to .png files and keep the frame rate at 1s. Then please send me the files I will try to make it into a bootanimation.zip file.

5 - Removing bloatware Bloatware is the carrier bundled software that comes with stock ROMs. One of the uses of rooting is to be able to remove these apps. Install Titanium backup from the market (free). You can go to the backup/restore section and simply tap the file/app in question and hit uninstall. Before removing any system app be sure to check it will not impact. E.g. for Epic see this. Safe to remove apps are in XDA for most phones, check them first please. If you are not sure about uninstalling just hit freeze and the app will stop running but will still remain installed. 6 - Customizing bootanimations Android uses a sequence of .png files which are looped at certain frames per sec to create impression of animation. So anyone with animation knowledge can create custom bootanimation. Note custom bootanimations on Samsung Epic require custom kernel, because the stock ROM/kernel uses proprietary QMG file for boot animation. So if you are thinking of using a custom bootanimation ensure you are not on stock ROM. For Epic the bootanimation.zip is in /system/media and shutdown folder is in /system/media/video/shutdown. For some other phones the bootanimation.zip is in /data/local. Here are some good bootanimations for Epic. Here are some for Evo. Here and here are basic Reliance bootanimations. 7 - Tweaks Using Wifi proxy - here. Using Wifi adhoc - here. Battery saving - here. 3e - Video tutorials Installing custom kernels and overclocking Custom kernels cannot be flashed on stock ROM. Custom kernels offer overclocking i.e. higher frequency than the stock frequency. Because they are running at higher frequency the overclocked kernels are undervolted. So while this will increase speed, undervolting reduces life of electronics. For Epic do not push overclock beyond 1.3 GHz and most phones are good at 1.2 GHz. If you want to manually change frequency, do so at small intervals and monitor the performance. Use setcpu to control overclock. Generally it is best to keep simple setcpu profile e.g. conservative governor min 200 max 1200 and one screen off profile at 200. Too many profiles confuse things. Note that for Syndicate Frozen ROMs you must keep conservative governor and screen off at 200 minimum. Installing modem

Select Nand Backup (may vary depending on recovery.img) 4. Follow on screen directions to complete 5. Wait for it to complete. Congratulations, you now have a Nandroid backup! Restoring a backup 1. Boot into Recovery Mode 2. Select Backup/Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img) 3. Select Nand Restore (may vary depending on recovery.img) 4. Select your 'Device-ID' from the list (You will most likely only have one device listed) 5. Select the backup you want to restore (Latest should be last on list) 6. Follow on screen directions to complete 7. Wait for it to complete. Upgrading ROMs I am being limited to two media files per post so apologies for large number of posts. Mods if you could merge the posts keeping the videos, that would be great.

3a - Video tutorials We will use Samsung Epic as example as it is the most common phone here, but the process for all phones is similar. If you want videos for any other phone here, PM me and I will try to get them added. The required softwares URLs can be found by opening these videos in youtube and clicking on description. Rooting and installing recovery image Rooting, installing recovery image and installing custom ROM To go to the recovery mode some key combination is needed. Epic - volume down + camera + power. Fascinate - volume up + volume down + power. Evo - volume down + power. Incredible - volume down + power > bootloader, there use Volume Down to select "recovery" and press power to select. Hero - home + power. Full list here.

  23. Office E-Mail means MS Exchange/Lotus Notes E-Mail different from POP/IMAP. They are giving unlimited E-Mail/IM plus unlimited internet browsing - both WAP and without proxy possibly tethering? BESPlus 1175 seems to be good offering to me. But I must say the other plans are nonsense.
  24. Android Reboot Problems And Proxy

Dr ji, Reliance cannot be expected to give decent customer service anymore even to longstanding customers. Now coming to my earlier post I am confused by your issue about 551 recovery mode - because you said you are not able to go to recovery mode via ROM manager initially but later you were able to. If you are actually in the recovery mode there must be some sort of option for nandroid. There are various recovery images like clockworkmod (works with ROM manager) and Amon Ra (generally for Cyanogenmod ROMs) but both will offer nandroid option. PS there is nothing called nandroid mode. Nandroid is a backup facility provided through recovery mode. You will be able to enter recover mode only if you have a recovery image installed. I want to know did you install recovery image after rooting with Z4root. Hence I asked for the URL which you used to root.

Avishek, SGA is Samsung Galaxy Ace I guess. That method is common. The last link is from a Chinese website translated through Google. Might be that is why not opening. Let Kanaga Ji update if the first method works then no need for this.
