  1. Using Rim With Linux

Dear arjuntandon, Okiez tell me few things about your setup first, what chip is being used in you usb-to-serial converter, well if you dont have the information than please send the follwing files as attachement it will help me to solve ur problem. Open a console and execute the following commands. dmesg > dmesg.log cat /proc/usb/devices > usbdev.log and send me the corresponding dmesg.log and usbdev.log, you can even find the information about what chipset being used in usb-2-serial converter from the windows hardware browser. Regarding the availabilty of drivers in linux, you have the drivers of most commonly used usb-to-serial chipset, so you dont need the drivers from any third party vendor. Knoppix have an utility to create symbolic link between actual device node and the opaque link modem. But if the actual device node does not have the corresponding device attached with it then that modem link would be broken. In your case can you tell me what kernel module is baking your /dev/ttyUSB0. Anyway just provide me the information about the chipset used in your usb-to-serial converter cable, then only I would be able to help you. Cheers ..................
  2. Amd64 ! . Is It Good.. ?

    Dear ss_rakesh, Check these links, http://www.bigbruin.com/techtip.php?file=008 http://www.serialata.org/index.asp Cheers ................
  3. Increase Your Bandwidth By 20%

Dear linuxguy, What do you mean by { packet schedulars reservable bandwidth to 0% effectively disabling it }, are you saying that XP's packet schedulars are so lame that they insist on reserving bandwidth for system updation:-), secondly QoS expands to tos marker in the actual packet that goes in/out the system, and according to the tos marker kernel's packet scheduler decides which packets to prioritize and which to not, and again theres more than one QoS packet scheduler . I hope you are aware of the PACKET QUEUEING AND THE DIFFERENT SCHEDULING ALGORITHM associated with it like INGRESS/EGRESS classifiers. So what I understand is that this tweak is talking about bandwidth management, now if one is having A/DSL,T1-T3,FO link than it do make sense to some extent, but using this tweak with a link that's saturation point is around 160Kbps and thats also time dependent is real gross. Another thing is that you can have control over your upload speed but download speed is not in ur control until unless you are the one who is having an immense control over the internets backbone network. So either you drop the packets when you are recieving the packets to simulate the cliiping effect on your downside bandwidth, or you are having some intelligent router with a real large buffer in built which can queue up your downside packets. But both of these points will be nullified here in the context of r-connect connection { Assuming this tweak was for the pplz using r-connect }. Anyway do you have any idea how much packets can be queued on the phones modem through which we are using r-connect, I wud be obliged if you can provide me some information regarding queue size of the phones modem. One more thing if system is reserving 20% of availabe bandwidth for maintaining the interactivity of latency critical applications for e.x general surfing, text/audio/video chatting, listening to audio/video streaming than there is nothing wrong with the default setting, but again you guyz are repeating that this 20% is reserved for system updating tools and that is weired and it void the sole purpose of QoS concept. My second query was that ok they are reserving the 20% for system updation but how they are marking the packets, what TOS value they are using and what happened to other data, assuming they are coming into that 20% window , does it get dropped and if it is than I think XP'S default network parameters is defined by some brain dead pplz. Dont tell me the 20% and 80% theory, I think I have posted enough and I make sense enough for the ones who knows how this network run and how we can manage it. But if you find something about this mysterious packet marker used by the so called QoS packet scheduler of the XP system then do inform me. I wud also like to know how and what these tos marker have the effects on the routers, that are present between microsoft's site and the peers trying to get updates from it. And again I will repeat, Please do the homework while spitting fire, I wear asbestos most of the time. Cheers .......................
  4. Increase Your Bandwidth By 20%

Dear linuxguy, There is nothing to shutup about and it's not about being arrogant it's all about speaking against some blind conclusion, what do you mean by { QoS is Windows' Quality of Service packet schedular }, umm I guess almost all of the modern OS is having this, it's nothing windows specific, even linux is having it :-). check your /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/net/sched/* Hmmppfff any decent book on TCP/IP suite or peer review of any TCP/IP stack implementation could have told you what is this QoS is in context of TCP/IP. Second why they are reserving and how this tweak can override it, I am curious about the marker they are using for packets identification thats destined for sites providing system updation. BTW have you done the testing, can you post the QoS packet scheduler statistics for both the case, or you just read it somewhere and now trying to justify it's usage . Again I will repeat { Do the homework before posting such a garbage tweak that try to justify it's usage using some technical mambo-jambo without giving any significant evidence }. Cheers ............
  5. Using Rim With Linux

Dear arjuntandon, Open a console in the knoppix and type these commands . su - just press enter here copy these scripts, as rconnect and rdisconnect in ur /sbin directory, chmod +755 /sbin/rconnect chmod +755 /sbin/rdisconnect rconnect youphonenumber yourphonenumber To disconnect just type rdisconnect If you still have some query then we will resolve it tomorrow :-). Cheers ......... rconnect.txt rdisconnect.txt
  6. R-connect Slow Down My Machine!

To keep it short, ms xp sp2 is some real brain dead blunder, look at the numbers of apps that it borkes for no apparent reason :-). BTW they still have the largest number of vulnerabilities in there system. Cheers ............
  7. Using Rim With Linux

Dear arnjuntandon, In the modem commands db of modem tab please enter ATZ;AT+CTA=30 and then try. Ummm well there is some prob with the kppp regarding the initialization of the modem, which is fixed in the kde's CVS trunk. Right now when you see the message initializing modem, just press cancel and re dial again, in 2 or 3 attempts you will be able to get in, if you want to try the dial script instead just tell me I will post that, btw what cable are you using serial or usb to serial converter? If it matters I have used knoppix so many times at my clients site and also used the r-connect, I am also having rd2130 and sch191 phones, both work flawlessly in it except some minor glitches. Cheers ..................
  8. Increase Your Bandwidth By 20%

Dear rahuldevnath, Thanx for enlightening me about the QoS :-) , but my question remains how the xp or it's any cousin is marking the packets thats related to system updatation as of high priority, well what me and so the traffic sniffer found is not like this. If you inisist I can post the traffic dump of a xp pro peer, that might help you answer the question, till then I will insist please do the homework before posting such a garbage tweak that try to justify it's usage using some technical mambo-jambo without giving any significant evidence. Cheers ................
  9. Using Rim With Linux

Dear arjuntandon, You can use the kppp from knoppix to use the r-connect, well if you dont select to save your configuration to some fixed disk then you have to create the account and do the modem setup each time your boot from the knoppix. If you find some problem regarding using kppp in knoppix I can forward you my kppprc for knoppix. Cheers ............
  10. Increase Your Bandwidth By 20%

Dear redshift, Some common sense question, how the packet scheduler is marking the priority of packets, ummm do they hardcoded the there site info in it, or microsoft now developed some another braindead protcol :-). Anyway it's really really fake tweak, guess you should do your home work before forwarding such a post, ummm autopsy of the traffic under the some nice packet sniffer wud been suffice. Cheers ................
  11. Should Computer Softwares Also Have Patents

Dear unwanted, I think you dont understand the core of innovation, and innovation dont require any patents. Guess the biggest innovation you :-), didnt required any patents for your innovator (No Pun Intended). BTW what safety you talking about, the "illusion" . Cheers .............
  12. Should Computer Softwares Also Have Patents

:-) Head with full of \tihs\, eventually will collapse with it's own intolerable stink. :-) GO GO ^^^NO PATENTS HERE I WANT^^^ Cheers ................
  13. Yahoo! Messenger Problem

Dear vishal, Can you tell us which verison of ymessenger are you using, guess a simple rpm -q will show you the version info, if you have used the rpm package of it. BTW why dont you upgrade your system, even the redhat 9.0 updates from the redhat ftp or it's mirrors will be sufficient, redhat also have some automatic updation tool. Anyway what about trying gaim/kopete :-), and forget about that "Segmentation Fault" thingy, we cant provide a solution for the close source thing :-). Besides, root@dacodecz:~# nm $(which ymessenger.bin) nm: /usr/bin/ymessenger.bin: no symbols No symbols, no more debuging blah blah .......... Cheers ...........
  14. Renaming & Deleting Menu Items

Dear vishal, Are you sure there is no "/etc/xdg/menus" directory in ur installation?. Ok for raw handling of this issue do, "find / -path /var -prune -o -path /proc -prune -o -path /tmp -prune -o -path /mnt -prune -o -depth -type f -name \*.menu -print -o -name \*.desktop -print -o -name \*.directory -print | tee files.log" Now check the files.log for the files having extension {menu, desktop, directory}, I bet you will find lots of them, anyway for starting your tweaking journey you can focus on the ones you found in your $HOME directory, besides you can start from these files, [[[[[[[ applications.menu applications-merged/*.menu preferences.menu start-here.menu /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Root.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Settings.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Other.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/theme-method.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Accessories.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Games.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/font-method.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Internet.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/System.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Multimedia.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Applications.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Development.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Graphics.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Office.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Advanced.directory /usr/share/gnome/vfolders/Accessibility.directory ]]]]]]]]]]] Go through these documents if your intention is to customized the entire menu structure of your system. http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/ http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/latest/ http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ Hope this will help you solve your problem :-) Cheers ..........
  15. Renaming & Deleting Menu Items

Dear vishal, If you are using the gnome desktop then there is an utility named gconf-editor that you can use to change most of the settings, well if you feel like a geek today :-) then check "/etc/xdg" and all of its friends. Cheers ............
  16. R-connect Platinum Plan & Unbilled Amount

Dear ashokjp, Well they didnt told me about the credit limit when I purchased the connection, and how one can use the r-connect w/o any disruption when they are not selling it as separate plan. Tell me one more thing what is the chain between RS 1500 rental and RS 1000 credit limit. Cheers ........
  17. Dos Installation

Dear vishal, Well if you wanna install dos to separate drive than theres not too much of problem, just follow some partition restrictions what dos needs, and add an entry of it in your bootloader like lilo or grub in linux. But if you want to install the dos on the separate partition of the same drive, then remember dos can only exist on the primary partition, and your partition size cant be more than 2GB. You can even try emulator as dosemu/bochs/vmware to get into dos w/o putting it into separate drive/partition. But I guess you want to have the dos because some legacy apps you wanna run or you wanna poke with some hardware w/o fiddling with any abstraction layer, in that case emulator based solution will not be sufficient. BTW can you be more specific about your requirements, that way you can have more personalized solution. Cheers........
  18. R-connect Platinum Plan & Unbilled Amount

Dear narrotam, I would like to share my experiences with the same problem, I am also an user of R-Connect platinium plan, Though my unbilled amount is not high as yours, but still it's something that's confusing, like this month I used only 2 voice calls each of arnd 1:25 mins and thats also local call, but my unbilled amount is RS 9:sumffin. They even cut my outgoing calls within due date this month, my total bill was RS 1673, so I called there customer care and asked them to tell me the problem, they told me that since my usage is high so they cut my outgoing calls, I told them to verify my usage, my voice calls were of only RS 25, and because I am in there r-connect platinium plan, they were not supposed to cut it, well the reply I got from them was a classical example of idiotism, they told me since my usage is high there is no consideration, even though my voice usage was RS 25, and it doesnt matter what I am subscribed for, my credit limit is only RS 1000, now it's beyond my reasonability how I could have only RS 1000 credit limit when I am subscribed for RS 1500 rental plan, but my all query lead to the same stupid answer. Anyway to cut it short I will suggest ya to pay your bill, or give them some security deposit or ready to get your phone's outgoing call cut. I guess too much of mental masturbation leads them to act schizophrenic in there policy making decisions. Whenever I will have an option I will love to throwaway this reliance headache ASAP.
  19. Dear orhb, What phone are you using ? Well I dont think apart from pinging there is any persistent solution for dormancy problem. Being dormant is an inherent feature of CDMA 2000 / 1x RTT specification after the ideal time, here ideal times definition is imposed by the network operator. BTW why are you pinging www.ril.com anyway, ping ur gateway machine at the reliance end, this way you can improve the latency and reliability of your ping's request. Cheers ............
  20. Whats Ur Os ?

Dear Vishal, Can you check the file permissions of your <bin> file, in this reference I am talking about firefox binary, it must be somewhere in you /usr/lib/fierefox-xxx/ ....... and if it's permission is not set to 755 then do chmod on it. It wud be better if you can change into that directory and execute command chmod +755 *. If all fails would you please give a pointer, from where ya downloaded this script, or is it from pristine firefox source or binary tar balls / rpm archive. Cheers..............
  21. Cannot Make Calls Using 2130

Dear mailinator, Go back to the service center and ask them to verify the upgradation. Don't expect anything useable from the customer care, they all are trained to **** nothing else, from my experience I can say that they are worst kind of help you can ever have, so if you dont wanna loose your mental peace then dont contact them (until unless you have no option left), or some ******* like ritesh will definitely, try to make u insane .......... *Thumbs Down For Reliance Customer Care* :-(
  22. Whats Ur Os ?

Dear Vishal, Please see this man chmod.
  23. Whats Ur Os ?

Dear deepu, What extra goodies it gonna have :-), I hope it would be something more than changing the redhat/fedora copyright strings to PCQUEST in the license terms ;-). BTW if you wanna have extra goodies for fedora then please check the extras directory of there any ftp mirror. Here I am posting a one link, yum or apt rpm database is also having a great number of extra goodies. http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/extras/ Cheers ...........
  24. Users Of Freedom Plan - Read This

Dear orhb, I guess S.I unit system is very scientific, and we already had a pretty much discussion on it. 1GB == 1024MB (binary number system) 1GB == 1000MB (decimal number system) Cheers...........
  25. Hong Kong Offering 100mbps Speeds!
