Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding

Govt dilly-dallies on 3G, TRAI eyes 4G New Delhi, Feb 8: While the government continues to dilly-dally on the auction of 3G spectrum, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has set its eyes on the next generation telephony. TRAI on Monday, Feb 8 initiated consultation for the fourth generation or 4G technology. “Yes. We are starting the process and would come out with a consultation paper to look into various issues relating to 4G telecom services,” TRAI Chairman JS Sarma said. Expressing anguish over the way the government is dealing with the 3G spectrum auction, Sarma added, “3G has been delayed badly ... I don’t want 4G or LTE (Long Term Evolution) to meet the same fate. Other countries are catching up with the 4G and that is why we are taking advance action,” 4G or LTE, which succeeds the 3G and 2G technology, is already being tested in various parts of the world by foreign players like the US-based Motorola and Ericsson. The fourth generation telephony offers download at faster speed known as ultra-broadband and high definition video on demand among other such services. It provides a wide range of data rates up to ultra-broadband (gigabit-speed) Internet access to mobile as well as stationary users. Sarma, who is keen on keeping the country technologically updated, said that TRAI does not want to see 4G delayed like 3G. -
Source An ordinary loaf which very few poor people in the country can afford can still be made available to them if it is wrapped in a single-sheet newspaper. Sounds strange? A senior human rights activist in Jharkhand has suggested just such an idea which, he believes, has the potential to reduce level of poverty in a developing country like India [ Images ]. The idea, suggested by 64-year-old Jawaharlal Sharma, is how to share the cost of making the loaf and thereby reducing its prices. This can be done if the bread is wrapped in a single-sheet newspaper that carries all the news, albeit in a brief form, and most importantly advertisements. Of course, to do this will be required a tie-up with a newspaper house which will pass on the revenue earned through advertisements to the loaf-makers. Sharma is so consumed with the idea that he wrote a letter to US President Barrack Obama [ Images ] seeking his help in implementing the idea after he failed to make any headway. "Yes, it is not only a possibility, but will be cost-effective and help reduce poverty to some extent," he said. Such a move would help reduce the prices of loaf drastically by 60 to 70 per cent, he claimed wondering how a poor man in the country whose daily earning is between Rs 25 to 30 can purchase a bread worth around Rs 15. He claimed he was driven to write to the US President after his efforts to convince newspaper houses and business houses in the country of the merit of his proposal failed to yield result, which he regretted. Apart from the poor masses, Sharma expressed confidence that the idea would be a grand success even among urbanites and particularly passengers of trains and long-distance buses. About a year back, he along with like-minded friends had launched a sample product of the loaf wrapped in a single-page newssheet named Day-Break, Sharma said.

Superb design and build, excellent display quality, Android 2.1 OS with Android Market, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, great interface design, excellent web browser, good connectivity features, voice to text converter Display has poor sunlight visibility and slightly over-saturated colors, interface is occasionally jittery, no DivX/XviD playback, inadequate loudspeaker volume, keys under display are a bit frustrating to use More Info

Source CES 2010 has witnessed launch of some cool gadgets and some weird ones as well. Samsung’s Transparent Laptop falls in the latter category. Well, it’s basically a (prototype of) giant 14-inch see-through AMOLED display laptop, which makes Samsung XPERIA Purenesslook totally worthless. Transparency factor is about 40% (when it is off). Resolution is 960 X 540, but the colors look pleasantly vibrant because of the 10-bit display. Our take here is that, What’s really the use of it? Surely, it seems like a concept laptop, but what’s the concept here? Right now, there seems to be no apparent utility / logic to this, perhaps things can be more clear when this thing is actually launched. If we go just by this prototype, won’t it give us a problem when used under bright sunlight? Since users are always resistant to accept a new (or weird rather) technology like this, a wise idea for manufacturer always is to allow the users to switch the concept technology on / off. We advise the same for Samsung here.

Dot Body Wants Pre-Launch Tests Of Mobiles For Radiation
savramesh posted a topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Source Mobile handset manufacturers, as well as importers in India, would soon have to get their handsets tested for radiation before any launch across the country, if the recommendations of Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical arm of the department of telecommunications, are accepted. A TEC committee set up to study issues related to implementation of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines has said the manufacturer/importer would have to provide two random samples of each model being sold in India to TEC for compliance monitoring before the launch. The test fee would have to borne by the companies. This exercise would be done to monitor the compliance of SAR limits for mobile phones, an internal note said. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) shows the amount of radio waves absorbed by the body while using a mobile phone. DoT has already approved self-certification of mobile handsets by the manufacturers/importers for SAR value, which would be published in the booklet of the handset or on the handset itself. TEC would also have the discretion of picking up two to 10 sample models from the market or from the factory of a manufacturer if there was any complaint or due to some other reason. A list of models would be maintained on the TEC website, along with the SAR values and ‘tested’ label. For compliance of radio frequency electromagnetic field emissions from mobile base transceiver station (BTS) antenna, TEC would check 10 per cent of new BTSs randomly. DoT has already approved self-certification for mobile operators to meet prescribed limits for human exposure to electromagnetic radiations for BTS. Like mobile phones, a similar list of BTSs would be maintained on the website. TEC would also set up laboratory for testing the SAR value, as well as the prescribed limit for radiations from BTS, to audit the self-certification furnished by the concerned parties. “Setting a lab for testing of handsets and BTSs would help in building up skills which would help in taking India out of perpetual dependence on foreign labs and telecom technologies,” it said. However, if there was any delay in testing of samples by TEC, there would be no impact on service providers and handset manufacturers, the committee said. -
Source The two got a new post-paid SIM card by producing fake documents for a number that originally belonged to an Idea customer The Pune police arrested two youths on Friday for procuring a SIM card on the basis of fake documents and making international calls from the mobile number, generating a bill of Rs 11.5 lakh in just two days. Suspects Asadullah Mohammed Hanif Khan (20) and Shamsad Alam Mukhtar Alam Munsari (20) are natives of Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh and currently residing at Ghorpadi gaon, primarily an Army area. The duo had obtained a SIM card of Idea Cellular. Hemant Sharad Bhalchandra, a senior executive with Idea, had lodged a complaint of cheating and forgery at Vishrambag police station in this case. According to the police, the suspects approached Idea franchise S R K Mobility in Vishranwadi on January 15 this year and placed a request for a new post-paid SIM card for a number that originally belonged to an Idea customer Smita Viju Nair. Notices to cell cos over 200 'illegal' towers in Shahdara NOIDA/NEW DELHI: With various local bodies in the capital and NCR set to go on an overdrive and initiate action against illegal cell towers from Monday, mobile users may be in for more harassment. On Sunday, it became evident that the authorities in Delhi, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad had already `identified' the rogue towers. "Showcause notices have also been sent out,'' said a zonal engineer at the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA). Meanwhile, large parts of Noida continued to face communication breakdown. The only shining light 18 Idea towers have been desealed. According to sources in Greater Noida authority, 150 towers in the rural Noida area have also come under the scanner. "Two leading cellular operators have taken the requisite steps to `legalize' their towers. But others are yet to approach us,'' said an officer. Meanwhile, the survey for identifying illegal towers in Ghaziabad has already thrown up some startling facts. "A leading public school located in Vijay Nagar in Ghaziabad has let operators install four towers on top of the school. This has been going on for the past two years. We have already issued showcause notices to the violators. We will take legal action after getting their response", said a senior police officer. In the capital, northeast Delhi saw some heated action over the weekend with notices being issued to cellular operators for 200 illegal towers in Shahdara North and Shahdara South zones. Delhi has over 2,500 cellular towers of which 1600 applications are still pending with the corporation. Another 900 are estimated to be illegal. After what seemed like bowing down to pressure from cellular operators, the MCD has decided to hold a meeting on Monday evening to be attended by MCD's political brass, senior MCD officials and cellular operators. "We will be meeting all the cellular operators on Monday. We will take a decision on the norms to erect cell towers,'' mayor Kunwar Sain told Times City. Sources said the mayor will also discuss whether a 72-hour breather will be allowed to cellular operators so they might apply to MCD. This application will be necessary to change the status of celltowers from `illegal' to `legal'. In a significant decision, MCD is contemplating a hike in one-time application fees too. "We plan to hike the application money from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3-5 lakh depending on the number of providers who will be using a single tower. We are also mulling the idea of asking the owner of the property on which towers will be erected to become a co-applicant and also pay us Rs 1 lakh,'' added the mayor. The new policy that will be decided on Monday will be placed before the MCD standing committee for approval on Tuesday. The Cellular Operators Association Of India (COAI), however, refused to comment on the developments in NCR saying they will respond only after studying the norms that are decided by Monday evening. -

MCD to finalise new mobile tower policy by Tuesday New Delhi, Feb 7 (PTI) The MCD today said it will finalise a new policy on mobile towers by Tuesday, under which service providers operating illegal towers are likely to be given 15 days to conform to revised norms to be brought in by the civic body. The policy is expected to get a proper shape after a committee headed by councillor Meera Agarwal, which is looking into ways to streamline the unregulated growth of cell towers in the city, submits its report to the MCD Standing Committee. A senior MCD official said after the finalisation of the new norms, those operating illegal towers will be asked to apply for regularisation and may be given a time of 15 days to one month for doing the needful. -

Samsung Unveils A Transparent Laptop
savramesh replied to savramesh's topic in General Technical Discussion
Samsung plans to retail its transparent laptop within a year Do you remember the whacky transparent AMOLED laptop showcased by Samsung in this year’s Consumer Electronics Show? Sure, it seemed to be quite a cool product for the people present there, but the problem was that it was only cool; not very useful. Apparently, Samsung has decided to take this idea forward to the market and are planning to release the transparent AMOLED laptop at the end of this year. If that was not strange enough, they plan to create a separate category of devices having transparent screens and will be releasing some in a year’s time. The laptop has a 14 inch AMOLED display. AMOLED screens are really catching up on the traditional screens. They are thinner and have much better color display while consuming lesser power. They are quite common in high end phones these days which boast of great video quality and high battery life. The AMOLED screen used in this device allows 40 percent of light to pass through the screen when it is turned off. After turning it on, you can see your desktop and applications and a great deal of what is happening behind your screen. The screen offers very sharp and bright images, but you may not want to see what’s taking place behind your screen. This concept is very useful, if you are a college kid with a rich dad and just want to show your new toy to your friends. And also if you are sitting at some place to ogle at girls through your screen while looking like an innocent working person. That apart, this device has no practical use, or at least we don't see one yet. It will let people see what you are doing on your laptop. What happened to privacy? Its usability in sunlight will almost be null because of the sharp light coming through. Imagine watching a movie where you are disturbed every second by the scene behind your laptop. As for now, we cannot think of any proper use of this notebook and we will have to wait and see if Samsung finds some before the release. Samsung is also working on an MP3 player with this same technology. Samsung’s IceTouch MP3 player ( YP-H1), will start retailing even before the notebook. It is a portable all in one media player which features Music and DVD playback along with FM tuner. The estimated price of this device is around $328. Samsung is also working on a transparent navigation system which will mount on the car’s windshield. This is the only proper use of this technology we have seen so far. This makes a lot of sense as it will help drivers to navigate with minimum disturbance. Samsung has surprised everyone by announcing the AMOLED laptop as a consumer product. Let us wait and see if Samsung can come up with some proper use of this novelty device
