  2. Source Mountain View, California -- Search engine behemoth Google as of late, has been moving forward in full swing, unveiling location-sensitive mobile features week after week. Today it added another to its arsenal: The Mountain View, Calif., company has just announced the integration of “Click-To-Call” feature in AdWords that allows users and advertisers to find each other via mobile ads, through a clickable local phone number to paid search ads seen on Android, iPhone, WebOS and other smart-phones with full Internet browsers, said Surojit Chatterjee, a product manager in Google's Mobile Ads Team, in a blog post. The feature allows a phone user to initiate a call to the advertiser instantly, just like the same way as the person would click through to the company's Web site. The phone number is displayed as an additional line of text in the mobile paid-search ad more likely at the bottom or top of the search query page. This suggests that when you see a business phone number on a mobile ad for a particular establishment, you can simply tap on the phone number and make the call. The feature is pretty handy in situations where you are searching for a place, like a restaurant, and want to call ahead to make a reservation. To make this even more effective is the fact that mobile web search is location-enabled. So much so that the numbers provided are also based on the phone number listing of a particular establishment nearest to your current location. That pretty much saves you the trouble of calling a phone number only to find out that the business establishment is miles away from you. For an advertiser, the cost of a click-to-call is the same as the cost of a click to visit its Web site. Advertisers can verify the response rates via calls through their ads in the same way they can track clicks. Advertisers will be able to see how many calls originate from the ads in the campaign summary in their AdWords account. Mobile phones working on Google's Android or Apple's operating system support the ad service. Advertisers interested in Google's new click to call feature should read this post over at the Inside AdWords blog. This is not the first time Google is offering click-to-call services. This new click-to-call mobile ads is released barely a week after Google unveiled optimized search suggestions based on location and three weeks after “Near me now,” a feature that shows nearby places once your location is determined. Google is among a handful of Internet players contending for leadership in the potentially significant mobile advertising market steadily keeps improving its local search features over the past year in recognition that mobile devices are becoming an increasingly powerful gateway to its properties. To capture the market, it recently purchased AdMob, a mobile display-ad technology provider. Also, earlier this month, Apple bought mobile ad company Quattro. Microsoft and Yahoo are also working to secure footholds in the market. Below is a video demonstrating how click to call phone numbers are used in mobile ads:

  12. Source Hopes to capture 7-10% share of the multimedia segment. It is a playground not for the weak-hearted. The market leader is none other than Nokia. Then there are street fighters like Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson. Motorola may be a little low at the moment but enjoys tremendous brand equity. Into this space has stepped an all-Indian brand called Karbonn. In the nine months since its launch in April, it has sold 1.5 million mobiles. This might be small in the Indian market for mobile phones which is estimated at 100 million per annum, but it is not insignificant. In the lucrative multimedia segment of the market, the brand hopes to capture 7 to 10 per cent share before it completes one year. Karbonn Mobiles is a joint venture between Delhi-based Jaina Group and Bangalore-based UTL Group. Jaina Group started out as a distributor of mobile handsets around 15 years ago. Though it now has its own brand in the market place, it is also the distributor of HTC in not just India but the whole of South Asia, and of Motorola and LG in India. Unfazed by the presence of big handset makers, Karbonn Mobiles believes it has a good chance in the market with a wide range of products at attractive price points. “The kind of distribution set-up we have in place and the wide range of devices, with attractive features at competitive prices, will equip us to make a mark for ourselves in the Indian mobile phone market. This coupled with strong marketing and branding initiatives will turn out to be the key drivers for us to gain a significant pie of the market share,” Jaina Group Executive Director Shashin Devsare says. Sector experts say that India is perhaps the most competitive market for mobile handsets in the world. Consumers want more and more features at as low price points as possible. Karbonn Mobiles knows this. The company offers customers the same features and quality that they get in global brands at an affordable price range of Rs 1,700 to Rs 6,500. This actually is the sweet spot in which the bulk of handset sales happen. While the multimedia phones of Karbonn address the urban markets which have begun to saturate, handsets equipped with dual SIM card and battery are clearly targeted at the rural markets. Though rural markets are billed as the next frontier for mobile telephony, the network remains patchy — a pale shadow of what you find in the cities. Consumers therefore prefer phones with more than one SIM card for better connectivity. “There’s a huge market in the rural areas and even the replacement mobile market is on our radar,” Devsare says. For building brand awareness, Karbonn Mobiles has earmarked an investment of Rs 100 crore for the current financial year. The company sponsored the last India-Sri Lanka cricket series, which gave the brand much-needed visibility. “We have invested heavily in cricket to create brand awareness for Karbonn. It has been one of the key platforms for our branding initiatives since it cuts across all segments in India and establishes an instant connect with the masses,” adds Devsare. Currently, the campaign for Karbonn Mobiles, which highlights the dual SIM card and battery options, is running extensively on all national and regional TV channels. Besides, the promotion will soon move to radio and outdoor media. Brand-building and compelling products are necessary building blocks of the business, but they can come to naught if the retail strategy is faulty. Mobile handsets are sold through over a million multi-brand outlets in the country. Apart from the brand pull, the retailer’s hard sell helps the customer’s decision. And a retailer will push that company’s brand which offers it the best profit margins. To make sure that the Karbonn brand does not lag behind others, the company is offering extremely competitive margins to dealers, Devsare says, though he declines to disclose the numbers. But he adds that the company runs various incentive schemes and contests regularly to encourage the dealer community. That apart, Karbonn Mobiles intends to have five to ten exclusive Karbonn stores in all the major states of the country by the end of this financial year. About 25 models are currently being offered by the company, including touchscreen, dual SIM, and multimedia in both GSM and CDMA spaces. Going forward, the company plans to launch three to four models every month across different segments and price points. The company is currently sourcing handsets from original design manufacturers based out of China, Taiwan and South Korea.

  14. Source Mozilla is looking to take the mobile world with storm with the release of Firefox Mobile "Fennec" for Maemo. However, another interesting news from Phandroid confirms that a Firefox Mobile version for Android is under works and will be made available for downloads soon. This news comes shortly after the release of Firefox Mobile "Fennec" RC3 for Maemo, which suggests that a final release of the Maemo version is just around the corner. Firefox Mobile for Android will be made available as a beta release somewhere in February 2010. Unlike other browsers, Firefox Mobile has support for extensions. However, it still has to challenge the mighty Opera Mini and the impressive Skyfire before it goes on to become one of the best browsers for smartphones.

In November, the firms had added 17.65 million users. Mobile subscribers grew at a monthly average of nearly 15 million in 2009 to be 51 percent higher from 346.89 million at end-2008. Wireless tele-density, or mobile connections per every 100 people, was at 44.73 at the end of December, the regulator said. Fixed-line subscriber base declined to 37.06 million in December from 37.16 million in November. Including fixed-line phones, India had 562.21 million phones at the end of December, or a tele-density of 47.89.

  24. Source Nokia’s N97 Mini, an offspring of the older N97, packs in a few killer features. Sporting both a touchscreen and a physical keypad, N97 Mini has a chic design and weighs148 gms. The N97 Mini has a slightly smaller 3.2 inch screen than the N97’s 3.5 inch but you also get a compact form-factor in return. The key presses are close to perfect, while you are tweeting or writing a lengthy email. The latter can be seen on the larger screen with TV-Out capabilities of Nokia N97 Mini. However, it’s the touchscreen on the Nokia N97 Mini where the problems start. Nokia’s ageing user interface, Symbian, dampens the fun. When compared with Nexus One or the iPhone, the touchscreen simply fails to hold its ground. But a kinetic scrolling feature provides some much-needed tickle to N97 Mini’s touchscreen. The internal memory is 512MB, which can be expanded to 8GB with a micro SD slot. Still, it looks stingy on a phone that is supposed to be your one-stop entertainment device. A vital part of the N97 Mini is the bundled applications and the Nokia music store is its most impressive feature. In addition to that, there is the usual Nokia Maps 2.0. It’s also the first Nokia device to sport Lifecasting — a new partnership between Facebook and Ovi. Lifecasting enables users to update their Facebook status directly from the device’s homescreen. Your location details can also be updated as you move about, thanks to the GPS sync, enabling a whole new level of social sharing and communication. At Rs 30,939, Mini is not going to be easy on the pockets. But if you want a mini PC-like mobile phone, go for it.
