Videocon To Launch 15 New Mobile Phone Models
savramesh replied to savramesh's topic in Other Network / Cellular Providers
Videocon plans pan India presence by Feb Bangalore Leading conglomerate Videocon, which has forayed into mobile handset space, has said that it plans to achieve a pan-India presence by end of February and roll out 15 more models of handsets in two months in addition to exploring the option of coming out with 3-G handsets. "We will be going beyond soft launches and will aim at having a pan-India presence. We will expand our footprint this month and fill in the balance by end of next month and have pan-India presence by end of February", Rahul Goel, COO, Videocon Mobile Phones, said in the wake of the launch of the company's mobile handsets in Karnataka. "Videocon has 12 models currently; we are not in the black and white space. We understand there is a huge requirement for dual SIM phones and we are looking at developing more phones in that region", he said, adding, "we are looking at launching 15 more models in the next two months". On whether 3-G phone was on the company's roadmap, he said, "We are positioning Videocon in the high end space as well and will be coming up with high end QWERTY phones and phones with 3-G capability". On the time frame for coming out with the 3-G model, he said, currently, it was not possible to ascribe any specific time frame but once the private sector gets access to the 3-G spectrum, it would be a matter of a month before the product would be rolled out, he said. On Videocon's entry into the mobile handset space, Rahul said, "there is a huge potential in the market and a large base of consumers are untouched throughout the country". "Other than urban, semi urban, the rural market is expanding rapidly and I think it is the right time to enter the market and we are doing it after a lot of research", he said. "There are 10-12 million mobile phones being purchased every month. There is no proper brand in the market addressing the requirements of the segment. Entering the mobile space is a natural extension for us, since we are already in consumer durable space", Rahul said. "New operators have launched their cell phones, and in terms of numbers, we already have more than 100 million subscribers and it is getting bigger and better day by day. Replacement and advancement of cell phone is also a huge pie of the total", said the COO. On the contribution of the mobile segment to the overall turnover of the company, he said, "We will have a significant double digit share by end of next fiscal". "Our benchmark is to be in line with consumer requirement and to be one of the top three players by 2011", he said. "A leadership position in two years we think is doable", he said, adding, "we have a strong foundation and infrastructure, strong customer service, distribution product development. We have invested in the right pillars to enable us to be leaders in the space", he said. "We want to be a one stop-shop for the customer whoever wants to by a cellphone of any range". The company would shortly be airing its television commercial. "We do not have a brand ambassador now, but we shall use a celebrity eventually", he said. -
A smart nexus of phones Google Nexus One Price: Rs 38,000 The Google Nexus One, not officially available in India, has made its way on e-commerce websites like eBay. Priced at Rs 38,000 on eBay, it is a costly buy. The smartphone is thinner than the iPhone and you have to hold it in your hands to know that it feels incredible. You cannot help being impressed with the Nexus One’s 3.7-inch Amoled capacitive touchscreen display when it comes to image quality and crispness. Unfortunately, Google didn’t include multi-touch in this phone. Remarkably enough, HTC has successfully managed to blend a perfect mix of an 800×480 display, a 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, 512MB of RAM, world-wide 3G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, among other things, into a slender 11.5 mm package. It’s a huge risk to put such a beast of a processor in a small form-factor like Nexus One, which can anyday slurp down the battery power. But we were pleased to see the Nexus One battery deal with this issue quite efficiently without resorting to task-killer apps. The 1,400 mAh battery is large enough but if Google decides to launch an enhanced power battery pack, then go for it. The Nexus One’s battery is on a par with the iPhone’s — it dies out after eight hours of continuous usage. Google’s Android operating system is nice too. The phone naturally connects to your Gmail account and automatically syncs contacts, photos, and more. Notably, Nexus One’s text entry is voice-enabled (data connection required) so you can speak out what you would like to type and Google’s software will type it for you. During our testing, the feature worked quite well, especially in low-noise environments. Android’s voice recognition capabilities can be extended to dictate Facebook status updates, Twitter posts, emails, texts and instant messages. A 5-megapixel camera beats the iPhone’s 3-megapixel sensor, although there are several other smartphones that provide better cameras. We agree that limited onboard memory of 512MB is a restraining factor, but it remains expandable with external memory cards. So, while the software runs from Nexus One’s memory, heavy applications like navigation apps can keep maps on the removable media, rather than clogging the phone with several gigabytes of data. We don’t see iPhone users making the switch, especially if they have made investments in purchasing the apps from the App Store or BlackBerry. But if you’re looking to step up to a smartphone then Nexus One is a great choice. Don’t go expecting an iPhone killer in Nexus One because it isn’t — not because it’s inferior, but it’s simply different.

Source A 32-year-old farmer was killed when battery of his mobile phone exploded at village Lohraura in Satna district , 486 km from Bhopal, on Sunday. This is perhaps first incident of death due to mobile set explosion in the country , though several cases of injuries have been reported in the past. The mobile set was Nokia 1100. Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Nagod Suryakant Sharma said Srikant Saket was talking on his mobile phone standing close to a 5000 kv high-tension (HT) pole. Suddenly the battery of the mobile exploded, causing his fatal injury. He died while being taken to the hospital. He is survived by wife and two children. In rural areas, mobile users often prefer to talk on cell phone near electric poles. They believe electric poles help get better signals to mobile set.

Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding
savramesh replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Questions over 3G auction surrounded Raja at BSNL's 3G service launch in Ooty Telecommunication and Information Technology Minster A. Raja was surrounded by questions in regard to the upcoming auction of spectrum for third generation services (3G) in the sub-continent. On the sidelines of the launch of 3G services of the state-run telecom service provider, BSNL in the city of Coimbatore (Ooty), Minster A. Raja mentioned that the much-awaited 3G auction is expected to ring in at least Rs 25,000 crore of revenues for the government from private bidders. The auction of the spectrum for 3G services for the private players is to take place by February end. While, he also mentioned that the aforementioned amount of revenues will be accepted by the private bidders as a one-time payment. One being asked about the probability of 4G technology to spoil the party for 3G, Raja said that the launch of 4G services in India is still in the nascent stage and is witnessing certain technological problems. Also, 4G would not hamper sale of 3G spectrum and both technologies could co-exist. Raja also mentioned that efforts are on to bring in technology that would allow 2G sim card holders to use the services as well. -
