Source The much sought after 3G mobile services have finally arrived for the people of Kerala with BSNL formally launching the service in the northern city of Kozhikode. The service will soon encompass all the 14 district headquarters of the state by the end of January. Apart from these locations, seven more major towns would be 3G equipped by the end of the month. The 3.5G services will provide users a very fast online user experience right on their mobile devices with facilities like video calls, blazing fast Internet access on the go and live streaming of video. The service supports speeds of up to 3.6Mbps. According to BSNL Kozhikode General Manager C Sunitha, the current capacity of 3G connections in the state is just 2.65 lakh with 37,758 lines taken up by Koxhikode alone. Hundred base stations are also being set up to expand the services in Kozhikode initially, she said. The arrival of a 3G enabled network might just boost the fortunes of this southern state of India, which is already a hot tourist destination. What more would a tourist need than getting fast Internet access whilst on the move?

Source Chinese telecom company ZTE Corp announced joining the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) and said it will launch smartphones based on the Android operating system in the first quarter of this fiscal. The OHA comprises 60 mobile industry players committed towards development of the Android platform, which was initially developed by Android Inc., a company later purchased by Google. The OHA members include HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung and LG, among others. The flagship software of OHA, Android competes against other mobile platforms from Apple, Microsoft, Nokia and Research In Motion. The platform allows developers to make applications, independent of service operators and device manufacturers. It leverages web and Internet content to provide advanced services such as mobile mash-ups and location-based applications.

Source MUMBAI: Tata Communications Internet Services on Thursday said it has tied up with Australia-based Wi-Fi zone solutions provider Tomizone to offer low-cost Internet to subscribers in India. The partnership would allow Tata Indicom broadband customers to set up Wi-Fi hotspots at their premises instantly, the company said in a press release. Users can also utilise their unused bandwidth by offering it to others for which they will get credit (of internet surfing time) on their account, which would subsidise the cost of broadband connection. "There is a need for higher penetration of Wi-Fi hotspots where laptop and Wi-Fi enabled-device users can connect to the Internet. Currently there are less than 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in India with Tata Indicom Wi-Fi having a share of over 50 per cent. Through this partnership, the number of such hotspots can grow manifold in a much shorter time," Tata Communications Internet Services COO Prateek Pashine said. India has one of the lowest broadband penetration rate in the world at about 0.6 per cent with 6.62 million subscribers as of June 2009. Tomizone will offer low cost Wi-Fi Internet access through an interconnected network. "We will usher in a Wi-Fi revolution that can create thousands of hotspots and enable lakhs of users to access blistering Internet on Wi-Fi technology in a more ubiquitous manner than today," Pashine said.

Source Continuing from our story earlier today, here's yet another speculation regarding the forthcomng fourth generation iphone. The Korea Times stated that OLED screen with video chat function and removable battery is "highly likely" to arrive in the second half of this year. Further more, this report stated that fourth-gen iPhone would carry dual-core microprocessors, better camera and more powerful graphics. We've already heard the buzz about Apple pushing iPhone OS 4.0 SDK to select developers. We've been anticipating more information about the arrival of iPhone and as per the usual iPhone launch cycle, it is due to arrive in June or later this year. If the reports about the dual-core CPU in fourth-gen iPhone stand true, then it may carry ARM Cortex-A9 design made microprocessor capable of going beyond 2GHz stated Apple Insider. We don't think Apple is really ready for it since it hasn't tried to open up for background processes yet, despite the powerful hardwarepacked inside the iPhone 3GS. An iPhone prototype running multi-core processors was already rumored last year but nothing came off it. So, be ready to hear about all sorts of possible feature iPhone 4.0 or the fourth generation iPhone now. We know that something is under the works and Apple will always be looked upon for its next device close to perfection.

Updated: 3G Auction completed after 34 days of bidding
savramesh replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
Foreign cos can't bid for 3G in CDMA space NEW DELHI: Foreign participation in the upcoming 3G auctions, if any, will be restricted to the GSM space only, the communications ministry has decided. This implies, new entrants from abroad cannot bid for third generation airwaves for CDMA and launch services here.Analysts say this marks yet another attempt by the department of telecom (DoT) to twist policy to ensure that foreign players are kept out of the upcoming auctions. In the case of CDMA operators, both second generation (2G) and 3G services are offered using the same airwaves or spectrum — therefore, allowing international players to participate in the upcoming auctions could have possibly allowed new entrants to launch full-fledged CDMA services using their 3G airwaves they secure in the auction. On the other hand, allowing international operators to participate in the 3G auctions for GSM telcos possess no risk as they cannot launch mobile operations in India with only standalone 3G airwaves. Currently, all mobile services in India, except select services provided by BSNL and MTNL, are offered using 2G airwaves, which so far had been given to operators based on their subscriber numbers. 3G radio frequencies, which will be allotted through an auction process, will allow telcos to offer high end services such as videoconferencing, high-speed internet, ultra-fast downloads and interactive gaming amongst other data services on the mobile. But, the communications ministry in its defence has said that foreign operators are not being allowed to bid for 3G spectrums in the CDMA space due to the scarcity of airwaves for this technological platform. In a DoT internal note, which will be included in the Notice Inviting Application (NIA), which will be released soon, the communications ministry said: “Only existing licensees offering CDMA services will be eligible to bid. Several operators have raised query as to why eligibility is restricted to existing UASL (licence holders). This is because, this spectrum is being provided as 3G growth path for CDMA operators. This has been approved by the ministry of communications and IT earlier.” With the defence forces yet to vacate additional airwaves, the DoT is left with limited 3G spectrum for the upcoming auctions. The draft (NIA) states that the 3G auctions in the CDMA space will be limited to a only one player per circle, while also adding that this sale of airwaves will not be held in six circles-Delhi, Mumbai, AP, Rajasthan, Punjab & Maharashtra — as the DoT does not have CDMA airwaves in these circles for the auction process. In another key decision, the DoT has also decided that companies who are successful in the WiMAX spectrum auctions can provide voice services too and challenge existing telecom companies. As per the earlier norms, WiMAX spectrum was to be used only for providing data services. So far, the communications ministry has been unable to issue the notice inviting applications (NIA) for the auction of 3G airwaves, as this issue of number of slots to be auctioned as well as the payment timelines are yet to be resolved. As per the earlier timeline, the DoT was slated to issue to notice on December 8. The NIA will be a legally binding document providing all details regarding the sale of airwaves including the exact availability of 3G spectrum in each circle. 3G services were originally scheduled to be launched in India in 2007, but have been repeatedly delayed amid troubles over freeing up spectrum and setting bid prices. First launched in Japan in May 2001, the services are available in over 90 countries. While foreign companies can bid for 3G spectrums in GSM, executives with international telcos during earlier interactions with ET had pointed out that the current 3G policy is skewed against new entrants and it does not make a ‘business case’ for them to participate in the upcoming sale of radio frequencies’. International players that do not have operations in India have complained that while new 3G players will have to pay $410 million to obtain a licence to provide wireless and wireline services, they won’t get the start-up 2G spectrum that is required to provide traditional voice and data services. So far, the Universal Access Service licence, which costs Rs 1,651 crore, came bundled with start-up 2G spectrum. 3G winners are mandated to take UAS licences without any guarantee of 2G spectrum, implying that the that can lead to a $400-million loss. Besides, no new operator can launch 3G services with a mere 5 MHz of spectrum on auction. “If the government was serious on foreign participation, they should have allowed these companies to bid for multiple slots,” BK Syngal, senior principal, Dua Consulting, and former chairman of VSNL had earlier told ET. -
Source You do not need a massive malware infection before you damage a huge number of mobile phone users. And today, the users of the Android phones are at risk. It is not just the end users who are threatened by this but the businesses that are operating it at the same time. Unfortunately, Google does not react that fast about this matter. How is that so? Well because the Android Market has been relying on the customers to tell about sloppy applications. Therefore, the businesses as well as the users of the smartphones are very vulnerable to these infections. Today, the malware apps were already kicked from the Google’s Android Market. This is actually a malware app that claims to be an application that would help in managing the banking and finance needs of a user. Because of this, finance-related services and companies must be aware from now on. There is a big possibility that the growing market of Android users can be a way for some people to do mischief. And those who work for the smartphones may also put the confidential information of their company at risk at the same time. The open environment from Google may be a good thing for developers. But in can also open the gate for some people who would like to take advantage of others as well.
